A few months ago, someone here described a way to stop these ads that was faster and more effective that the [flag] option.
Does anyone remember that and can remind me how it was done?

Here's what to do:
1. Right click on the name of the spammer to open the profile in its own window.
2. On the comment page, click on the time stamp just to the right of the names (for example 5 hours ago)
3. The URL will update with a number regarding the spam comment, click the URL to select and then copy it.
4. Go to the spammers profile window and on the top right click the flag to report. It will open the report page, select SPAM from the drop down menu, then hit next.
5. In the Direct Link field, paste the URL, ensure that the comment number is at the end.
6. Click Next Page and that is it.

I always flag the comment AND report the profile directly to Disqus.
1) Flagging the comment by enough readers will hide the comment from public view and bring it to the attention of the site owner/management.
2)Reporting the profile to Disqus, if done by enough people, will prompt Disqus to eventually delete the entire profile and all of its comments across all sites. Unfortunately this takes forever (in my experience several days) for Disqus to ever do this.
I too wish I knew of a quicker, more efficient way of getting rid of these spammers.

Some penguins are queer btw.
Last week, the man and I spent a day at the Maryland Zoo (formerly known as the "Baltimore Zoo" -- for my fellow hons reading here), which currently has one of the world's state of the art habitat-exhibits of African penguins. Truly beautiful. I urge anyone reading here, who can, to see it.
Anyhow, one of the exhibit docents spotted my limp wrist and took me and the man aside. He pointed out the male penguin pairs that had bonded and were inseparable.
(As you'd expect, they were gorgeous.)

ANTARCTICA: Activist Declares Continent LGBT-Friendly
March 22, 2016 Activism, LGBT News

The straight man who turned the house across from Westboro Baptist Church into a giant rainbow flag has struck again! From South Florida’s Broward New Times:

Aaron Jackson, a well-known activist who runs a nonprofit organization called Planting Peace, has just declared Antarctica “the first LGBT-friendly continent.” He visited the freezing land the first week of March and unfurled both a rainbow gay-pride flag and a pink-and-blue transgender pride flag.
He explained to New Times: “I was just watching a documentary on Antarctica and thought, ‘Aw, man, ‘I’d like to visit Antarctica — that would be real interesting. Maybe I should bring a pride flag.’ It’s not governed by any one country — just international treaties. No government is in charge of Antarctica. That would be interesting if we declared it the first gay-friendly continent. The reality is, no one will be able to tell me it’s not.”
Jackson flew to Argentina, then joined a cruise on a research vessel. He said the purpose of the trip was to spread “visibility for the need for basic human rights for the LGBT community. It was an honor to carry the pride flag throughout Antarctica, and Planting Peace will not stop fighting for LGBT rights until all sexual minorities experience full, fundamental rights in every corner of the world.”
Hit the link for much more. It’s a great story. (Tipped by JMG reader Jose)

Why the surprise. It's been predicted all along that the would win Utah and Idaho as he will all three states on Saturday. He ended up cutting Hillary"s huge 321 delegate lead by only 6 delegates and even if he wins those next three by a 2 to 1 margin (quite likely), he won"t cut her lead to anything less than 260. After that come the closed primaries (no mob mentality like in a caucus and no room for cross-overs from the right) and Clinton will race towards the finish leaving Sander s in the dust.

Hilz has 71% of the delegates right now to get the nomination. Bernie has 40%. And NO the superdelegates cannot be ignored. Even Bernie is trying to court them (unsuccessfully)..

It's perfectly relevant that super delegates can switch their vote if there's a shift later in the election. This is what happened in 2008. Keeping that in mind is just owning up to reality.

nope. not gonna happen. period
1) millions more individuals voted for Clinton
2) more delegates will have voted (and have voted) for Clinton
3) Clinton is a DEMOCRAT...not an independent with way weaker connections to the superdelegates, who are free to vote however they wish
4) Clinton has won, VA, FL, OH,, NV and Iowa (barely, but, a wins a win). these are the states what are in play every election year. WHY would you take those victories for granted?
5) demographics. minority voters are with Clinton. They are the future of the party and the nation...the party does not want to disenfranchise them.

there is less chance of Sanders getting the superdelegates than there is of him being the next PM of New Zealand.
She will be the nominee.
Its really decided now, but, byend of April, only those in DEEP Sanders Denial will not see it

...six delegates so far. There are still a few to apportion.
Interestingly, Clinton can get shut out of every single remaining contest from now to April 19th and still walk into New York with a delegate advantage.

With pundits saying the Hillarys are in a panic and the Bernies have all the momentum, it is important to note Bernie got 6 more delegates than Hillary in yesterday's contests. It is 57 to 51 delegates gained so far yesterday.

There's more money in a horse race, but I'm entirely confident that the Clinton campaign has and can read a target sheet for each state. Certainly this Clinton supporter can.

The more this race goes on, I start feeling like the Sanders Campaign is actually rather poorly run if we look into AZ, IL, MO, NC, FL and OH. It's interesting that he has gained and lifted himself to be a worthy challenger but his campaign has never really took the momentum and turned them into votes. These small victories are great and I'm happy for him, but he only does really well on day of turn-out in caucus where your votes are public.
They spent a lot of money in AZ and did a ton of events, but they were both too late and they didn't educate their voter base on registering properly.
I think when he finally concedes the race, we'll get a better look at the behind the scenes.
This is not an attack per se on Bernie, just that his campaign seems even more poorly run than Clinton's did in 08.

IMO, Bernie's strength is vision, not implementation. I also don't think he anticipated being in the running to this degree (not that that's an excuse). I think he planned more on being a consultative voice from the "outside."
As much as I like his general vision, obvious passion, and direct language, I don't think I want him running the administrative branch of the government.

The Sanders campaign *is* poorly run, in a myriad of ways. He's over-relied on stadium events and television advertising, neither of which help him connect with Black and Latino voters, while his ground game isn't particularly good. His surrogates for the Black community have been poorly chosen, and his inability to just focus on the issues of one particular community without name-checking other groups is precisely why he's turned off minority blocs (though it's probably why he is doing so well among straight white males).
I'm disappointed. I supported him early in the election, but his single-minded focus on a couple of issues over all others is why I switched candidates. On the one hand, a President needs to be able to do everything, which he's shown he's unable to do. On the other, the areas where a President has the most influence--say, foreign policy--he seems unable to care about at all.

I will speak about Ohio. I really never thought Ohio would go to Bernie, it was Hillary country even against Barrack. And the state universities where not in session (Spring Break) and the Bernies couldn't get the 'kids' to bank the early votes.
The only thing that may have tilted toward Bernie was the number of normally Hillary supporters who crossed over with an anti-Trump Kasich vote. She would have won by a larger margin,

The really funny part was how the Republican bigwigs started to drop Kasich as soon as they realized 5 to 7 points of his victory was crossover voters for Hillary or Bernie come November.
Some idiot reporter on MSNBC said the night of the primary it was good for the Republicans because these voters were Republicans now. He acted like they were now branded to vote R, except they are not going to vote for the Republican in the Fall, lol

Bernie did well in the populated areas where the younger workers and three major universities are in Utah. Clinton did better in rural areas. Not really a break from the pattern so much as the turn out was many times larger than expected.
My caucus location didn't expect more than 1,000 people, last I heard we had over 3k show up.

I said "fairly diverse", which it is. Actually, it's more than fairly diverse, so no, there's no "new qualifier" there. It's diverse by US standards too, so you're wrong there also. It has a lower % of black but close to US average Asian and higher than average Hispanic population, and about the US average for white/non-Hispanic white. Yes, it's a pretty good representation of the US as a whole. Just face it, you blurted out an inaccurate and untrue statement, and you just can't admit you're WRONG.

LOL just because you anecdotally visit once a year and you only "see" a "sea of white" doesn't make you factually correct. Statistics and the US census prove you're wrong, and no denial from you based on your yearly visit and your personal observations will ever change that. Have a nice day.

Hmm, intriguing to see Bernie's back in the game.
Why not, I'll say, Go Bernie. Even if it looks, as everyone else says it, it'll be Hillary vs Trump in the general election.
I like rooting for the underdog. Though I won't root for the GOP underdog(s).

Sanders may be staying in so that at some point he gives his delegates to Clinton in exchange for a position in her administration.
Which, IMO, would not be a bad idea.

Clinton won't require it. Mathematically, she'll walk into the Convention with the majority of delegates, and her already-committed superdelegates will kick her over the top.
Sanders' delegates won't be necessary (and are bound anyway). He doesn't have any appreciable superdelegates.

I hope you're right. The Bernie Bro's in line last night were all basically saying, "Bernie or I won't vote" just with more harsh misogynistic words.
Sanders campaigning for Hillary will hopefully convince many of his supporters to still vote blue this November.

there is not even a statistically significant chance of that for the democratic side.
the rep;ublicans? I hope they can avoid it. Trump is SUCH a weak candidate..so are the rest thought, and if they "broker" they break their party as we have known it forever.

Sanders put in a good show. and does well in caucuses but, if he keeps gaining that many delegates every time three states vote, he will be caught up to Clinton after only about 90 more states vote.

Yet none of these anti-gay bigots would have an issue signing off on Kim Davis' (highly likely) fifth marriage would they? That's all you need to know about their so-called deeply held religious beliefs.

Of course! She has been washed in the blood of Jesus. or something. In Christian Hillbilly talk, that means that some magic incantation has been chanted, and her continuing adulterous union with her third or fourth husband is actually wholesome and pure. And her hymen magically resealed itself on each of her many wedding nights, so she was a pure virgin.

Too true! The only legally supported "deeply held religious beliefs" are those of self-righteous, Christianist bullies. And how come, despite the fact Catholics don't believe a wedding without church mass and RC* priest is a marriage before the sight o' gawd mumble mumble, yet Roman Catholics were always able to hold these clerkships without controversy, caveat or box seats at an eternal zombie barbeque? This "we're part of your marriage/sin" is brand new, bogus, bizarro legislating from the pulpit.
So... Mazel tov: Kentucky agreed on "Bride, groom or spouse". Sure took em a while! Because marriage among humans is SO hard to think about. I suppose they wanted Bride, Groom or Abomination, amIrite? Guess I should mention I been married, serially, to four interesting men. But then, I am lesbian, just living like the god botherers want us to! Ahahaha! Me 'n' the husbear just had our 7th anniversary Feb _29th_ marking 28 years. I'm SO moved, reieved and thrilled that everyone can marry now. Though in North Carolina, if you marry yer sweetie, you can be fired, evicted, denied pizza, cake and flowers, and who knows maybe lose the right to pee at the mall. "Bride, groom or spouse." Duh.
USA, let's get it together!
* By RC I mean Roman Catholic, not Radio Controlled. XD

The whole kerfuffle was invented by Liberty Counsel when it looked like their guy Bevin (the guy who had PRIMARIED Mitch McConnell because MM's an establishment librul - also a liar, of course) might lose the election to succeed Democratic Governor Steve Beshear. Bevin was in trouble because, among other things, people started understanding the implications of his pledge to eradicate Obamacare (including the successful Medicaid expansion) in Kentucky. They needed to gin up christianist angst in order to drive the rightwing voters to the polls. Kim Davis became the main (almost the only) issue in the final weeks of the campaign, and they totally succeeded in replacing a Dem governor with the an ultra-GOTP type.

Having recently gone through the legal formalities, I can tell you that, here in Georgia, they simply (and without any fanfare whatsoever) changed the single marriage license application to "Applicant 1" and "Applicant 2". No "Bride", no "Groom", no "Spouse". So far, I haven't heard a peep out of anyone on any "side" about this.

Here in Virginia, we had the choice of "bride, groom, or spouse", and first we chose 2 grooms. The computer wouldn't accept that so we changed to 'spouse" and became Spouse A and Spouse B. It wasn't programmed entirely gender neutral because at some point, after asking my mother's name, it then used a female pronoun to ask for residence location. Since 'mother' was the only female on my form and my mother is deceased, I was briefly confused but the clerk enlightened me. They still needed a pronoun in the spouse option and had chosen female. Spouse A was not confused but I was briefly a dead lesbian, or something.

Note: I don't hate adulteress. Jesus commands me to hate the sin and love the sinner, but I am compelled to fight, and even go to jail, if necessary, to prevent adulteress from receiving public funds, that might be used to further their whorish, adulterous ways.

Firstly, fuck Kim Davis.
Secondly these assholes would be saving the taxpayers the expense of unnecessary printing and duplication of forms if all the forms said “first party” or “second party.” They might even all have a blank line after the name where the individuals can identify themselves as "wife" and "wife" or "groom" and "thrice married town tramp" or "daddy and "boy" (okay, that last one might not fly).
But no. These insecure mouth breathers just have to be "special".

Certainly that makes sense for *any* marriage certificate, for applicants to just be listed as "spouse" or "party" or whatever. That should be acceptable enough for all involved – straight, gay, and bigots alike... While everyone deserves to be able to get that piece of paper legally, it usually just winds up in some filing cabinet in the basement somewhere.
At least mine did. 😉

I know, we've had the technology for people to just answer a few questions and have the whole form custom printed in frickin Olde English font since 1984. And blank forms with lines like __________ ( ________ ) where you can write your name and marital designation seem fairly obvious too, but some people have got to make everything difficult.

KENTUCKY: Compromise Reached On Marriage Licenses
March 24, 2016 LGBT News, Marriage Equality

The Kentucky GOP’s plan for a separate marriage license for gay couples has been shot down. Via McClatchyDC:

Kentucky would have a single marriage license for straight and gay couples under a compromise plan backed by Republican Gov. Matt Bevin and the Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee.
The proposed form would allow applicants to identify themselves as bride, groom or spouse and would not require the county clerk’s signature. That could be done by a deputy clerk.
Controversy over the state’s marriage license erupted last summer when Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis refused to issue marriage licenses after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage. She spent five days in jail, citing her religious objections.
With Bevin’s blessing, the House Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill Wednesday calling for a single marriage license, in contrast to a proposal approved by the Republican-led Senate that called for separate forms for gay and straight couples. One form would put applicants’ names under sections titled “bride” or “groom.” Another form would allow applicants to sign under “first party” or “second party.”
The compromise has the support of Kim Davis and the Liberty Counsel – as long as clerks can still keep their name off the dirty forms for gay couples. (Tipped by JMG reader Tristram)

I just watched a report on French TV where they relayed Trump's remarks to the Belgians and asked for their comments. "He can go fuck himself!"was one answer. They then asked Fox New's reporter if he'd been to Molenbeek. He replied that he was not allowed to answer questions from reporters on what he reported. Un-fucking-believable! The same guy reports no-go zones in Paris. There are no no-go zones.

ISIS Uses Trump In Brussels Propaganda Video
March 24, 2016 2016 Election, Terrorism

Watch below. Via the UK’s Mirror:

ISIS have released a new video following the Brussels attacks that features Donald Trump. The chilling video opens with a message in Arabic followed by an image of Trump, saying Brussels is now ‘an absolute horror show’. Trumps voice is heard saying: “Brussels was one of the great cities, it was one of the most beautiful cities of the world 20 years ago, it was amazing actually, and safe. Now it’s a horror show, it’s an absolute horror show.”
The video, which glorifies the atrocity which killed at least 31 people, features Islamic State jihadis fighting in Syria and Iraq, flashing up images of dead children and babies. A song plays in the background saying, ‘Brothers, rise up, rise up. Claim your victory. Let’s go, Let’s go’ over and over again.’ A voice in Arabic, with English subtitles, says: “The regulations of Jihad in the cause of Allah are clear and there are no reasonable doubts about it.
While some observers point to the clip as evidence that Trump’s rhetoric has only inflamed ISIS, over at Breitbart they are actually celebrating his being featured in their propaganda.

I know, right? It's like you're on the other side of the looking glass, where words don't mean the same thing.
On Facebook the other day, saw "I guess I'll have to vote for Trump, because Clinton is scary". Now, I think Clinton would make an effective president, but I certainly see how people could have negative reactions to her. That she'd be business as usual. That she'd promise things and not do them if they seemed politically inexpedient. That progressives would find her not deeply committed to progress, while reactionaries would find her too willing to make changes.
But on the whole, anyone can see that she's an experienced centrist who is unlikely to radically change the way government works in the US. A person could disagree with that being what the country needs most, but how on earth does it translate to "scary"? There just isn't a definition of the word that fits.

Especially since for all of Trump's bluster, unless the Senate turns even more red, democrats (and SCOTUS) would prevent Trump from doing some of the ridiculous shit he proposes.
Moreover, if Trump tried to act dictatorial, the military isn't about to turn into Stomtroopers.

Because a first lady is just a pretty thing for the president to take to state dinners, and foreign lands. And we shouldn't care if she is a legal scholar, world-class diplomat and all-around good person.

I have a soft spot for her. Remember she was a champion Czech skier. When she discovered he had Marla in Aspen with the family at the same hotel, it was SHE who alerted the press that Donald and Ivana were through, and she reportedly confronted him on a downhill slope, skiing BACKWARDS and yelling at him all the way down. Brava!
As Patsy said when Bubble was pointing out Ivana in a magazine as "one of these old ladies who pile their blonde hair on top trying to look 20..." and then looks at Patsy "...sorry!", Pats says "I think she's fabulous!"

If he was half as smart as he pretends to be, or a decent human being, they'd still be together. But he's just another asshole who thinks the way to look good is by "trading up" in the wife department.

Trump's completely classless, but so is Cruz. I didn't see Cruz denounce the tactics the PAC that supported him used against Trump's wife, he just issued a lame compliment to make him look like the good guy. Of course there's nothing good about this somewhat more polished but evil incarnate evangelist. To be expected, in typical Trump fashion, he took the bar even lower with this latest stunt. Sorry, I just can't feel bad for either one of them, but they are making republicans as a group look even more pathetic than they already did. May they continue to implode.

Retweeted Last Night By Donald Trump
March 24, 2016 2016 Election, Infighting Is Funny

And the feud over their wives continues. NBC reports:

Ted Cruz warned Donald Trump not to “attack women” Thursday after the Republican frontrunner appeared to escalate the personal feud over their wives.
“Donald, real men don’t attack women,” the Texas senator wrote after the billionaire retweeted an unflattering photo of Heidi Cruz.
The exchange came after Trump showed no sign of backing down in the dispute over a campaign ad that featured an old picture of Melania Trump posing handcuffed and nude for GQ magazine.
The flare-up prompted Jeb Bush to endorse Cruz Wednesday in a rebuke to what the former Florida governor called the “divisiveness and vulgarity” of Trump.
Trump repeated late Wednesday that he believed Cruz “knew about” the ad, which appeared to be aimed at persuading Mormon women to support Cruz in Tuesday’s Utah primary.

Geez, those Trump tweets blatantly indicate why he is completely unfit for the presidency. Any slight he receives, and he's immediately all butt-hurt and responds with taunts and jeers and threats. Basically---his reaction is always PRECISELY like a grade-school bully. This is not the type of personality you want to make world decisions.
Not that I'm all that worried about it---at this point I really don't think the GOP is going to allow Trump to be the candidate. I AM worried that the nominee will be Ted Cruz, who I think would destroy the country.

I'm told that prior to demolishing his own image with this presidential run, Ben Carson was a hugely aspirational figure in the black community because of his "by the bootstraps" success story. He's pretty much ruined that now, so no doubt there are a lot of disillusioned African-Americans who used to look up to him.

If you check Doc Stabby's record as a brain surgeon, he was not at all the success story. The famous German conjoined twins never fully recovered, and did not live long. Their parents divorced after the operation. They were prohibited from telling their story for 18 years [if I recall the length of time correctly]. He told loved ones to "pray" for those on whom he operated. His career as a pediatric brain surgeon at Johns Hopkins was not illustrious.

Within a few years, we are going to learn that Ben Carson is in fact suffering from a degenerative brain disease, and that the half-closed eyes, droning monotone, conflating fantasy with reality, lack of social engagement and emotional affect, and the apparent inability to process unexpected information were not weird character traits but symptoms.

People are so baffled and can't believe Carson or Christie would do such things.. but the answer is as clear as day.
I loved how Carson didn't answer the question about how he would feel if Trump attacked his wife. The guy is an absolute corrupt whack job. I'm so glad I am not a republican, but it's so frustrating that many in this country can't see what is going on here.

I forget who, but someone came up with the theory that Christie is angling for a VP spot knowing that Trump would be eventually be removed as President before his term was up.
That actually seems more plausible than the normally outspoken Christie seriously thinking that Trump would be a good President.

My wife and I were talking about that potential angle the other night, that the GOPers might try to force a 'reasonable' (ugh...) VP pick on Trump. And then have him declared mentally unfit under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment for the office the same day he swears the oath.
Anyway, here's hoping he and the rest of the Republicans don't get anywhere near the White House next year.

I've said this before: Trump is displaying a textbook case of Narcissistic Rage. It's a typical response to any perceived slight against a person who suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder. We definitely don't want someone like that as president. It was bad enough having someone like that almost become vice-president. No matter who wins the democratic primary, it's worth voting for them in the general just to keep this thing out of the Oval Office.

it's sort of absurd to bother with Carson. he's an also ran has been who never mattered in the first place. his only role was always and ever to "prove" the republican party is not racist. he got his 15 minutes, he "proved" republicans can like black people for a little while, so long as those blacks like jeebus enough, and then they all moved on. he was as real as a blow up doll, to their side.
the sick thing is that he ever rose to any prominence at all. thanks, American Media! wow, do you suck. you actually treated this idiot like he had something to say, like he wasn't asleep 90% of the time, like anyone gave a fuck he existed. as a fellow High Yella, i have to say: sell out for something real, my birther brother. i mean, like at least a billion. but no, he's too dumb to even play the Game, on the dumb people's side. #1 - In his defense of Donald Trump, one of the things Carson said was: "One of the ways you measure a person is you look at their children. And, how do their children act." Hey Carson, Sasha and Malia Obama behave very well!
#2 - Carson was asked by Joy if he wants a liar for the presidency. His response: "Tell me a politician who doesn't tell lies". I wish someone had then followed up with: "So, are you suggesting that you, Ben Carson, have told lies too when you were campaigning?"

The View Panel Rips Into Ben Carson Over His Endorsement Of “Racist” Donald Trump [VIDEOS]
March 24, 2016 2016 Election, Politics

Via Mediaite:

This morning, Ben Carson appeared on The View and the hosts there dug way, way into him about his support of Donald Trump. They called the presidential candidate a racist and took Carson to task for endorsing someone who has called him “pathological” and compared him to a child molester in the past. They held nothing back and you can see it all here. Know who else saw it? Trump. The show isn’t even over for another 15 minutes and he has already taken to Twitter in an attempt to rake Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, and the rest of the cast over the coals.

The General Assembly has already pretty much killed the entertainment production business in NC already because it refused to offer the incentives that other states like Georgia did. There are still skeleton crews for some minor TV shows but it's nothing like it was 20 years ago.

Unless the film is themed Colonial, without incentives why come? Part of a TV series called "Turn: Washington's Spies" filmed very near me in 2014. At that time they said their incentives were to expire here, couldn't renew until 2016, so would likely finish filming in GA.

TV/Movie industry has dried up considerably but don't forget about the smaller outfits still there doing commercial and digital work for various industrial & large multi-national corporations. That kind of work is still flourishing there because the infrastructure was already built with the talent available and it is way cheaper to do that kind of on-contract work because of its non-union status.

The Georgia law says that religious people can ignore anti-discrimination laws. The NC law says that there can be no anti-discrimination laws to ignore.

Or maybe North Carolina was already shit for big business anyway... so there are no substantive threats to make...

The actual legal process happened in one day. But, the fight was going on in NC for several weeks. It started immediately after the non discrimination law was passed in Charlotte. Businesses had time to respond.
And, they could still respond after the fact anyway. Are you suggesting that the businesses responding to GA will just give up and not move ahead with consequences if the Governor actually signs the bill? Are they going to just say, oh well, our threats didn't work, so we'll just continue to do business in GA?

The HRC (our "flagship" organization, not the Democratic candidate) hasn't held a party to tell them what to do. Plus, so far, the only thing the US people know is that bathroom provision because the news organizations haven't done a good job of reporting. And I think there is a quota on how many LGBT news stories can be reported in a week and they've filled that with the GA one.

The TN State Legislature passed a Law several years ago that said no City or County in the State could pass a law that protected LGBT. They did this after the City of Nashville passed an ordinance not allowing discrimination in hiring based on sexual orientation and required City sub-contractors not to discriminate in hiring based on sexual orientation. So these State laws that make it legal to discriminate against our community are everywhere they're not just in GA or NC.

The situation is different here in that it all happened so quickly that corporations didn't have time to form a response. The Georgia bill has been under consideration for almost a month now and the legislature was already in session. This NC thing came up while the legislature was adjourned and not in session. The bill was crafted to quickly that most of the members didn't see it until Wednesday morning. That's not to give a pass to corporations located here for not becoming more active, but this thing happened in a matter of days, not weeks like elsewhere.

The very same night that Charlotte passed their anti-discrimination ordinance the Governor and Republicans in the House and Senate released public statements saying that they were going to do EXACTLY what they just did. I know.........It sort of reminds me of all of the anti-gay laws that the police were still using in the 90's to harass LGBT people when we were daring to have fun in gay bars that were to close to straight neighborhoods. They called them anti-sodomy laws, but they were really laws used to keep us in the closet or to make sure that we didn't behave gay in public. I'm sure you remember those days. Still, the truth is that the laws are there that allow discrimination, but no one notices them until some bigot decides that he/she doesn't want to serve us or hire us or rent to us.

Was that actually still happening in the 90s? In the 70s and to some extent in the 80s, but by 1990 I never saw it, except for one instance where they closed down one of my favorite bars for having "underwear" nights. They pulled a food and public health card out of that particular city's hat to put that silliness down.

It was much worse in the 70's & 80's of course, but we had several nightspots/restaurants that were in neighborhoods that decided we didn't fit in, even though they were zoned commercial. The PD harassed the owners and the patrons regularly. They threatened with everything from the sodomy laws to health code violations. Some went out of business altogether, some just moved to different neighborhoods.
Update.....I just checked to see when my home State overturned the laws. They were overturned in 1996 after a challenge by the ACLU. Most of the South didn't overturn their anti-sodomy laws until after Lawrence V. Texas in 2003.

I'm not certain, but I doubt Utah has overturned/revoked their anti sodomy laws. But even that up tight bastion of reich wing bigotry pretty much quit bothering people as long as they weren't black and out on the streets after midnight. Something that is still a problem for all police departments in that state.

It all depends on Democratic turnout. Kasich's re-elect was helped by 1) the D Lt Gov candidate had to drop out and be replaced. Then 2) the D Gov candidate had not been properly vetted. He also was caught making out with a woman in his car who was not his wife and didn't have a valid driver license for years. Not good for a former FBI employee.
When that was all exposed the D Gov campaign almost closed down, no appearances, no interviews, no ads the last weeks of the campaign. The turnout in heavily D areas like Columbus only had a 27% turnout of register voters. So Gov Kasich's landslide victory had almost an entirely Republican turnout.
Now as for his win in the primary against Trump. I have seen 5 to 7% of his vote were D's crossing over as an anti-Trump vote. And they will vote for Hillary or Bernie in the Fall.

Right to work states are places where non union/guild workers are allowed to work on permit. That is, SGA, IATSE and sister unions are allowed to issue work to non union members without charging union dues, among other things. Film companies love right to work states because they can substantially lower production costs by paying lower wages to the non union crew members. However, if you live in NY or CA it's rare that a young non union film crew technician can segue from film school/college to being a union member. So many people follow production companies to right-to-work states where they are able to actually get work in their selected fields and eventually join the local the union local in that state. Such are the vagaries of how union labor rules and state labor laws work.

A few years back, tour producers could bring in non-Equity actors after the tour lasted a certain amount of time. Then the tour companies simply sent out non-union productions. I thought IATSE and the other unions would have a fit, but nothing happened. We had an informational picket for the first two shows, and then it was just accepted.

Troika productions, the leading exponent of non-union tours is part of Dodger Theatricals. In fact, it kept them afloat through some tough times. The League of producers has an agreement with the unions, Equity, IATSE, Musicians', etc, that they won't join in on the strikes of the other unions. This agreement was breached during the last actors' strike on Broadway when the musicians' union came out in support. The strike ended that day. Since we saw Broadway productions going out on tour with non-union cast and crew, Equity made major concessions and introduced a two tier system that does away with the most generous aspects of the old #1 tour contract. Needless to say, there are no #1 tours any more because Wicked can't possibly gross enough to cover such frills. I think since the two tier came into effect the non-union tours have stopped. I don't know. Its a while since I worked as an actor. I remember picketing in Cleveland when I was there with an out'of'town tryout and the Broadway revival of The Music Man showed up using all the B'way graphics and a completely non-union cast. Needless to say, I loved my union (most of it, don't get me started on the dread pink contract) and it has provided me with a pension and when I worked with health insurance.

The Georgia legislators don't give a rat's ass about any list of Hollywood stars' signatures. They are too concerned about pleasing their bigoted, hateful voters and getting their souls into heaven by showing God how rotten they can be toward gay people.

So far Tyler Perry seems to be MIA. Tyler Perry Studios is headquartered in Atlanta. I could see his movie character Madea being all up in arms and willing to sign the petition. Too bad Tyler himself can't find it in himself to do the same.

The bill passed the House 101-65 and the Senate 37-18. An override would require 135 and 42 votes respectively. The makeup of the House is 119(R), 60(D) and 1(I). The makeup of the Senate is 38(R) and 18(D).
It's unlikely the governor's veto would be overridden.
And in the best news of all the Georgia legislature's 2016 session ends tonight at midnight. So they can't do any further damage until next January.

Hollywood celebrities weighing in on local matters tends to backfire. Locals often resent people who've never shown any interest in their area before swooping in and telling them what to do. We need local business and political leaders to speak up or at least those with strong ties to the area. We saw this with HERO. It doesn't work and I'm not sure why the lbgt rights organizations don't know that...oh right...they are in NYC and DC and LA and not part of those local communities either.

Tourism is also a huge industry, but tourists avoiding unpleasant places doesn't produce the same backlash, even though everyone hates tourists. How much resistance to "Hollywood elites" making public statements about local affairs stems from hatred of elites - and how much from hatred of manifest examples that their cultural hierarchy is neither universal nor ideal?

I don't think anyone likes outsiders coming in and telling them what to do. That goes for everyone in every place. Add to that the fact that a lot of people feel that the "elites" look down on them so they especially resent such people, especially when they've never seen them address any local issues before. If this was the local girl or boy who hit it big but still maintained strong times to the community, that might be one thing. But for them to fly in on a private jet and tell everyone how to run their local affairs, that's not going to go well. Reverse it and think how it would go over for people from the Bible Belt to fly in to NYC or LA and lecture the locals on which ordinances to pass? Does that sound like a strategy? Of course not.

HOLLYWOOD: Movie Industry Bigwigs Urge Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal To Veto Anti-LGBT Bill
March 24, 2016 Entertainment, LGBT News

A coalition of major Hollywood figures have signed a joint letter urging Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to veto his state’s pending anti-LGBT bill. Among the boldface names are Rob Reiner, Lee Daniels, Anne Hathaway, Julianne Moore, Gus Van Sant, and Harvey Weinstein. Read it below. The letter was coordinated by the Human Rights Campaign, which earlier this week pressured Disney into vowing to boycott Georgia should the bill be signed into law.

Dear Governor Deal,
As leaders in the entertainment industry, we have deep concerns about H.B. 757, which would sanction discrimination against LGBT people and others in Georgia.
As you know, Atlanta is often referred to as the Hollywood of the South. During the last fiscal year, at least 248 films and television productions were shot in Georgia, adding at least $1.7 billion in direct spending to the state’s economy. Additionally, the entertainment industry helped to bring more than 100 businesses to Georgia through relocation or expansion in the past fiscal year. Only two states — California and New York — have a larger entertainment industry footprint and both have statewide non-discrimination protections on the books. Unfortunately, Georgia not only lacks such protections, but could soon move from a bad situation to worse with H.B. 757.
We pride ourselves on running inclusive companies, and while we have enjoyed a positive partnership on productions in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere if any legislation sanctioning discrimination is signed into state law.
We urge you to veto H.B. 757 and send a strong message that Georgia will not tolerate discrimination against citizens, employees and visitors to the state.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this urgent issue.”
