How do you know what their capable of?

Dear Readers,

How would you feel about this, is it right to call a person, whether they are a child or an adult with autism, Asperger's Syndrome or Down Syndrome "stupid", "retarded", an "idiot", "weird" or "dumb", especially if you are an adult yourself? I don't.  Many people with mental and physical disabilities are intelligent, some of them can live on their own, have families of their own, have careers , drive cars just as good as anyone else. I know and have known such persons.  I think far too many people underestimate, misunderstand and are ignorant of people with disabilities. Some people seem to lack compassion. People with disabilities are human beings like anyone else.  Why should someone with mental disabilities or physical disabilities to live a full life?  How do you know what they are capable of doing, if you don't even give them a chance to prove themselves?

I've heard people make some very heartless statements about disabled persons, would these people openly make racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic or misogynistic statements in public like they do about disabled persons?  Probably not, unless their a bigot.  Making assumptions about a person's intelligence or self-independency level because that person may be autistic or have Down Syndrome is a form of prejudice.  There are autistic people who are way smarter than probably most people, how do you know what their capable of doing for themselves? A lot of them have spouses, lovers, children, careers, own their own homes and drive cars, are fine and upstanding members of society.  I just want to know where is the compassion and understanding towards these people in society? Think about it.

Sincerely,

B.W.

On Cedars' blog, John posted a video about a video he watched that was posted on jw.org.  It was their spin on the Phillipene typhoon from last year.  I recommend viewing John's video about it.  I can't comment on his post on my facebook because my jw daughters would get upset if I post anti jw stuff, so I'll post here what struck me.  He mentioned a lot of things that were terribly wrong with the jw video, but one thing I noticed that he didn't mention on was of a girl whose whole family died accept one brother.  She said, "The brothers told me it was okay to cry..."  I thought, What?  She thinks she can't cry after losing her whole family because jws are supposed to not show grief like others since they believe they'll be seeing their loved ones again.  I remember being taught that when I studied and remember it being expounded upon through the years.  So this poor girl felt guilty for crying until the brothers told her it was ok to cry?!  What a shame what that religion does to people!!

That's probably why the WBTS has 'memorial' services rather than funeral services Cathy. Fancy being told 'it's okay to cry'! Blech. I'll have to watch the video later as I'm off to get my kids from school.

Hmm ..... nice photograph despite it being 'sans clothes' Divertido!
Hardly the way to promote the healthy clean cut image the WBTS always pushes. I guess she'll soon be in the 'not really a Jehovah's Witness' category. Isn't that what the company does every time someone high profile who claims to be a jdub does something very undub like?

Interesting film. Its from roughly when my Mum converted, around 1986.

I presume its following the fall out from the mass apostasy of the late 1970's. It seems to go over a honest history and interviews many former members. I'm only half way through it now but it seems a good watch if you've got 1 hour to spare.
 Enjoy!

We need modern documentaries like Truth Be Told to be this readily available. I will watch this at some point.

=12pxFirstly I have lurked on here for about the past three hours and read some of your stories and I thank you all so much for sharing them
I was brought into the supposed "truth" at age seven all I remember is that one moment there are strange visitors at my parents home and then we are going to meetings and a book study I asked why and was told because this is what we believe now like you change overnight
My Grandmother (a really lovely lady) was involved previously when in england and so was my mother but basically with in 4 months my parents were baptized and all hell broke lose
My father was always a b*****d but now he had support at that .... I admit I wasnt a model witness I was a usual kid who asked a lot of why questions ....and by the age of twelve I was abused daily for not conforming to regulations....I didnt want to do the talks I was forced to do my first talk at twelve a bible reading ... from then on I had already suffered severe anxiety since I was about eight years old this pushed me over the edge I muddled my way through the talk and spent the rest of the night in the carpark in tears ....I suffered severe depression and when my father spoke to the "elders" It was the devil causing my depression.....but we were in a smaller congretation but it was full of back stabbing and gossip.
My father became a MS and things got worse I ran away from home and lived with my grandparents (grandma) was in Jw I was still forced to attend but I wasnt abused here
I suffered sever depression and was admited to a mental facility by my parents ended up being released and the first thing they expected me to do was to get up and do talks etc again
over this period pretty much every second sunday after the meeting my father was called into a meeting with the elders over their expectations of him and his family (as we only had a small car) my father would take grandma so my mother would only attend rarely although she was expected to go in field service etc
I was expected to pioneer at age 15 although schooling and working .... there was a big push for me to go to bethel...why i dont understand I had other things on my mind .....but like most JW kids I end up with a crap education mental health issues and cant stay far enough away from them ....
it took me so long to realise that the people that would always be closest to you in the congretation were the biggest back stabbers my parents didnt have much money they never did ....yet "if you cant pay into the building fund maybe you could pitch in more around the congretation" and things like that
When I got baptised i didnt realise what i was getting myself into ..... the life of expectations and rules and regulations ....because we lived in a rural area as well as bullying in the congretation and abuse at home I was bullied at school and in my young working days at work and I agree with you IT IS A CULT a brainwashing to manipulate people

after the best part of 18 years I had myself d/a'd and I havent looked back the worst thing that sticks is after about 15 years i still can recite all the books of the bible and about 15 scriptures I refuse to even own a bible these days ....I wont let my kids do religious education as all religion is a lie

 sorry this is long
Thank you for letting me share

Welcome!imageDon't be sorry about your story being long; what matters is that you feel safe enough to share. The folks here are very accepting and I hope you'll feel at home. I'm sorry you had such a crappy childhood. JWs are good for that, sucking the joy out of life and replacing it with stress and fear.

But it does seem like jws all stress while sucking the fun out of everything. Well the good news is that your out of the cult and can get on with your life.image

Hello there Bob and welcome to the board :-)
Believe me, if you have read some of our stories yours is positively short lol!!  After all, how can you condense all the experiences contained within your live as a jw in anything less than a few volumes ??!!
Now that you have started, I am sure that there are many more stories for you to share.....and its always great to meet someone new and hear their take on things smiley: smile   Congrats on escaping the mind control of the organisation....not an easy move when you have been brainwashed as a child, as so many of us were!!

the worst thing that sticks is after about 15 years i still can recite all the books of the bible

Lol Bob.....that is only the worst thing till we start reciting the words from the songbook and the tunes get back in your head........see!! you're remembering aren't you??!! smiley: smokin
Look forward to hearing more from you and getting to know you better

You are welcome here Bob! Thanks for your story and glad you
 saw the real light.
How that religion messes with the mind and family life! It is an appalling cult isn’t it? The good bit is that we don’t have to agree with it and you can be very happy that you are free from the crazy beliefs.
How are your relations with your family now?
Where are you from...cowboy country by any chance?

Hi Cowboy Bob!!! Thank you for sharing your story! Many of us born/raised in kiddos suffered (and still suffer) with anxiety and depressions.
It is a heavy load for the adults who join, and even more impossible to live up to as a child.
The bullying within the congregation is something I've learned is sadly quite commonplace, as is the backstabbing. Many seem to thrive on 'one upping' others to make themselves appear better.
....and none of us baptized as children/ minors could ever have understood the heaviness of such a 'commitment.'

Hi there Bob and welcome aboard! It's always a pleasure to have someone new to play with.
I'm of the born-in variety of former jdub ... and didn't realise I was different to the rest of the world's kids until I headed off to Grade 1 at school. Now that is a baptism of fire for the innocent little jdub kidlets!
There is so much pressure put on kids within the framework of the jdub cult ...... which makes it harder for those with anxieties of any level and certainly can (and often does) lead to depression. You are well rid of that lot and like you ... my kids are not exposed to religious classes or anything of a religious nature when they're out of our house. It still makes me laugh years later that my boys (the youngest is still there for the rest of this year) attend the same primary school I used to and don't do religious education either ... but for very different reasons. My parents had me and my siblings excluded from RE classes because of course only their religion was 'the truth' and there weren't any dedicated jdubs willing to run the gauntlet of RE classes .................... and MY kids are excluded because we're both atheists and don't want our boys exposed to even 'harmless' RE classes!!!!
I look forward to getting to read more about you! Have fun in here ..................

Sorry for the rant but...

I told my mom I am speaking to a catholic priest because I want to ask questions about the catholic faith. She flipped out, and made it out like I'm joining a church. She still believes in Noah's ark, Adam and Eve, thinks evolution is a atheist belief, and won't listen to reason. She spews out the same old Catholics did this, apostates are bad, and atheists are arrogant. She said "just please don't be a catholic or a atheist." - like it would be the end of the world if I became either one. I told her I will be who ever I want to be. If I want to be a catholic I will (I'm not planing to become one), if I want to be an atheist I will. She's says I should just be an agnostic, and I said I will be whatever my research takes me.
I've been to a hindu temple, and spoke to the swami there. A evangelical church (worst expericne btw) , a mosque, and now a Catholic Church. I don't see the big deal.
She says the Jw religion protected me because if I wasn't a jw I would do drugs, and have sex with a bunch of girls and get an std. Etc. it's really annoying, I'm the biggest nerd out there, and would rather play video games on a weekend night then do drugs. Religion or not I'm smarter then that.
After speaking to her it seems she doesn't know anything, she's very ignorant of a lot of things, which is ok, but speaks like she actually knows it. She's not as bad as Jws, but still has the same wt concepts. I worked hard to learn about things, and to keep an open mind. I know I'm not there completely, but it's extremely frustrating that a person doesn't take the time to research even the core tenents of their beliefs. She left the Jws out of emotion, and still believes a lot of the same crap.
On side a note the priest is setting me up to meet a woman, and her husband in the church who escaped from a sect similar to Jws, and went through depression after that to help me in my recovery.

My mom has said some of the exact same things to me. When I told her I was getting married (to a worldly guy) she told me I should reconsider because "Did I really want to live with having an STD for the rest of my life?" She just assumed because he was worldly that he must have an STD! I love her, but sometimes she is so clueless! She has never worked or had any other type of regular interaction with worldly people as an adult. So she has some very narrow minded views of non JWs.
I hope your meeting with the other sect escapees goes well. It's so nice to be able to talk to those that can relate to our experiences.

Oh god I know exactly what you're going through. When I told my mother that I was an atheist (not a fun experience) or that I was gay (even worse), she had this look of sadness and disgust in her eyes.
But even though there are times that I just want to... Hug the dumb away and just squeeze until its all out,I can't really get mad at her. Mostly because she ( and most JWs) are raised in this bubble that promotes ignorance, but also demonizes any ideas that aren't from the watchtower.
But that still doesnt mean that I wanna hear all her **** image

Inventor, my guess is she is physically out but her mind is still "in" for the most part. That indoctrination is very stubborn and super hard to get rid of. She mostly still believes what she was told.
The Catholics are a favorite punching bag for most other religions, ( or those outside of any religion). it has a very, very long history so the stories are many. I found, like maybe you do, that studying about the religion from original texts, and learning how so much that has been said about the Catholic religion is twisted was a real surprise for me, and I found it fascinating. The Catholic religion as a whole is not set out to convert, so you can safely go to the gatherings, Mass, help in the charities etc, without constant pressure to convert. ( I can't speak for individuals who may or may not behave this way).
I tried out several types of churches as a teen and the evangelical one was not exactly my cup of tea to say the least haha My Father was raised in an evangelical church (his mom picked it out when they moved because it was the closest to walk to!) As a result he refused to participate in any organized religion as an adult. I was raised in my Moms religion, Methodist, which I am still fond of.
Her response sounds typical for a person still indoctrinated IMO. I wouldn't be surprised, especially if she has not done the very hard and determined work to learn the truth behind the WT and break herself mentally away from it. Those of you here who actually were JW ,do you believe this is correct?

Yes, Nonnie, I do.  I think you summed it up pretty well.  In my case doing the work here and seeing the results of actual recovery from the cult has resulted in a change in my perception of all of my life experiences.  That takes more than just not going to the KH anymore.  It's sort of like recovery from drugs and alcohol.  Even if the person stops using...true recovery (changes in attitude and behavior) does not take place until the person works on the underlying issues and changes their thinking.      Good Idea!

I have major problems with the Catholic Church. However in it's sacramental presence I respect it. But it's doctrines are downright silly. Masturbation, and oral sex are mortal sin? Please....

After years in recovery - being a member on not so many 'nice' sites for recovering JW's and doing research; I'd just about believe anything about the evil from that church, cult...call it whatever - I'd hardly think they are any different from the religions they condemn for being OMG...name the term the WTBTS says to call anyone not believing as they do.

I hate that religion and yet many of us have families still in that we don't want forgetting although they would shun us.

Abuse.  It's real within their ranks; we're just not supposed to talk about it.

Truthfully I don't believe in any organized religion and that of course can pit me against any given religion - although not all of them are hateful as the JW.

It's good to be back for awhile, reading and posting as time permits.

Take Care and keep up the fight for freedom from a  hateful religion.  I do understand how it is for still loving our family while finding our way through life.  Love, Lin and John.

Inventor ..... when someone has been told long enough that one religion is better than the other, they believe it. They don't question it. Some don't question it even when they leave it!
You could look at your mum's sentiments this way if it helps .................................. she's like a piece of tie-dyed fabric. You tie off bits here and there ... then you dye it. The bits covered with the ties are the original colour ... the other bits of course are dyed the new colour. It doesn't matter that your mum is no longer part of the religion ... her dyed bits of the fabric are how she lives now, but the original colour aka being told jdubs are better than everyone else ... is still there. Eventually both colours will fade if that's any help!

A long aquaintance with the literature of the Witnesses leads one to the conclusion that they live in the intellectual ‘twilight zone’.

A long aquaintance with the literature of the Witnesses leads one to the conclusion that they live in the intellectual ‘twilight zone’.
