Hey everyone, I am new here to the site and wanted to share this article along with a personal experience with her.
http://national.deseretnews.com/article/3089/The-real-life-artist-portrayed-in-Big-Eyes-credits-her-newfound-faith-for-helping-her-take-a-stand.html
I was able to meet Margaret Keane in Pittsburgh, PA at the Corapolis congregation back around 2002 or so. She was traveling with another sister visiting PA and wound up meeting our current PO at the time and he invited her to the congregation to share her story after the service meeting. I was young at the time and thought it was amazing to meet her as I enjoyed the art. She mentioned that at first they all looked sad due to the world's state of affairs (how nothing would ever get better). Then as she learned the JW life they children now had "hope" and they became happy.
Now that I look back on it and even with this movie...those kids will be back to sad or hell even mad due to them having NOTHING to look forward too!

Heard an NPR piece on this film a couple of days ago. My sister was given one of these originals and I'd imagine its worth something. She proudly displays it and tells anyone who asks that Margaret is a wit. Who cares? My personal opinion is that it's art like the 70's fiber optic lamps were "art." Factory line, kitschy and over-hyped are words that come to mind.
The film's getting pretty good reviews though. I'm sure as a personal interest story that it is a tale worth telling. How she let her husband take credit (and money) for her work, to me, is telling about the mind-set of someone who gets involved with a cult that suppresses the value of women.
I'd definitely see it just to watch the performances of Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams.

Welcome to the forum.
Am I the only one who finds the story suspect? She says the reason she came forward is because dubs don't lie.
Look, I'm all for a domestic violence survivor standing up for herself and taking credit for her own work.
But...to credit dubs seems so disingenuous. It's just a reason to credit the society where credit is NOT due, and to use the media to witness to others. Nothing more.
◦Dubs do not believe in, or teach, that women should oppose men. Yeah, I know he was an evil nonbeliever and all that, but those of you who've been in since the 70s or before must admit there is at least a covert discouragement of this type of behavior. Even for nonbelievers. I have never seen or heard any indication the society encourages women to stand up for themselves in this sort of situation.
◦Dubs do not believe in notoriety, putting oneself in a place of fame or adoration, etc. Jesus, we couldn't even say the word 'adorable' because of it. It's creature worship according to their doctrine. I know of exactly zero teachings saying you should speak out to get credit for your work in this situation.
She's just using the society as a prop here. JMHO

For those still attending. Have you seen an excitement go through the dubs about the Tim Burton film big eyes? They reckon it will give a "fine witness".
I've seen it and found it really irritating, basically Margaret Keane is such a timid mouse that she allows her husband to take all the credit for her work. The portrayal of jw's in it isn't great but it does lean towards the angle of they are her saviours.
Which is probably why all the dubs are so excited about it

My mum had to see it. I was stalking redbox to find it for her. It was movie of the week worthy. Another example of JWs finding someone with a weakness. Keane may be a fair example though of a person that is better off with the org, or at least one who will never be able to doubt out loud without having the internal and external demons making her wonder where else can she go?

I can't imanlgine why anyone would be excited about this. I would think most people don't care and won't remember what religion she was by the next day. If they do think about it they will probably see she just went from being a doormat for her husband to being a doormat for her religion.

A local elder, in a lowered tone of voice, told me that he had slipped over to a theater to see it. Apparently, there is a spot of (gasp!) bad language in it so he wouldn't want it to be widely known that he had seen it. But he was raving about how good it is.

I saw the movie and it was interesting. I met Margaret and her daughter when I visited Hawaii a million years ago when I was a dub. Frankly, looking back, I wonder if she and her daughter were struggling with cognitive dissonance. They both were sickly, couldn't be around people because of chemical sensitivities, and rather distant. That being said, it is a dusty memory and I could have some things wrong, but it was a disappointing meeting for a fan.
Based on the movie, she felt (as many women of that time period) that she needed a man (or figurehead) to guide her. She replaced the abusive hubbies with an abusive religion. Neither one required her to think for herself (until her life was threatened by hubbies and survival instinct kicked in). No doubt the dubbies think the religion was her savior from the abuse...

I just wonder how many of her mi££ion$ have been given to her new 'master' in Brooklyn, to pay for KH/Assembly Hall/Branch Office construction & paedophile court costs!
At least her husband was up-front with her about his money-grabbing deception!

The searcher, yes that was my thought too when I was forced to watch the film... How much has the WT got out of this vunrable woman?
I think she's about 99 now so there's no way she will leave dispite "the truth" having changed completely while she been in it.
And I wonder who gets all her $$$$$$ when she does die?
I'm sorry to hear the daughter has been assimilated too, I noticed in the film it showed the daughter sitting on the lawn chatting with a group of friends and listening to the radio. Her mothers response to this is that she is worried about these friends of her daughters because they seem "rather fast" (!) Seriously? Chatting and listening to the radio?

What is Truth?
What is Truth? 9 months ago
I watched the movie a couple of weeks ago while at some JW's house who have met Margaret Keane. It was pretty boring and I kept wondering why Tim Burton would work on such a film. When it hit me, while later I was silently ranting about how people can buy into the stupid cult, that the man is an f'ing genius. I didn't get it until I went over the whole motivation for Margaret to stand up and tell the truth was that Jehovah hates lying. To me at least the whole movie was a dramatic encouragement to stand up for what you know to be right and against those that oppress you and call them out on their lies and crimes. Of course to most dubs it will pass right over them, but for those with even minor doubts and especially those awake but afraid to stand up It will be a great encouragement/tough medicine.
I highly recommend it,

I remember when I was a kid back in the mid 60's and my Mom had some of her prints framed and hung them in my younger sisters room but took them down because people at the Hall were saying they were supposedly demonic....the eyes were creepy etc. It was hilarious to find out years later she was a JW. By then everyone had turned their sites on Smurfs and other more current horrors.

b of c , I too thought the movie was interesting ,we had some of her pics.,and I agree watching the movie how I thought she was a doormat /vulnerable ,allowing herself to be used so easily.
But then weren`t we all to some degree? Used ?
And it doesn`t take much to excite J.W.`s so long as it isn`t a negative about them .
Does anybody know what their response is to the Danish T.V.series Dicte is?
I`ll bet its not the same positive respnse

Another email going round the JW community. There all excited about this saying it's going to be a great witness to others. Yeah right.
http://www.afterellen.com/blog/karman/hudson-set-to-star-as-keane ?
Kate Hudson set to star as painter Margaret Keane
Sick of watching the ads for the new Kate Hudson romantic comedy, Fool's Gold, that features yet another hapless man-boy (this time Matthew McConaughey) who can't commit or hold down a job but is likely to end up with a hottie who doesn't deserve him on his arm and riches in his pocket? Me too. Luckily, she has something new in the works, and it is unlikely to feature Kate beating a beer-swilling treasure hunter about the head with blunt objects.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Hudson is set to star in Big Eyes, a film about painter Margaret Keane. You may not know Keane's name, but you will likely recognize her paintings of wide-eyed women, children and small animals that became popular in the 1960s. I think the casting of Hudson in the role is brilliant. I wonder where they got the idea?
All snark aside, Keane's story is interesting and, ultimately, inspiring. Her husband, Walter Keane, sold her work under his own name, and when they divorced in 1965, he refused to relinquish ownership of the paintings. She took him to federal court and won her case, as well as $4 million in damages (though the award for damages was later reversed). After the divorce, Keane moved from San Francisco to Hawaii, where she became a Jehovah's Witness. Her work became brighter and more upbeat, and Keane reportedly attributed her joyous new approach to life to her religious conversion. (Although I'm thinking that the move to Hawaii couldn't have hurt either.)
Keane (pictured above with her dog, Chili) now lives in California and continues to paint. You can see her work here. Keane also has some interesting ties to the film industry. According to Wikipedia, both Joan Crawford and Natalie Wood commissioned her to paint their portraits, and director Tim Burton commissioned her to paint a portrait of his then-girlfriend Lisa Marie and their Chihuahua, Poppy. And I see signs of Keane's influence in the American cinematic classic The Grudge 2:
Big Eyes will be directed by The People vs. Larry Flynt screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski.

Yes, this movie is in the works. No, it won't necessarily be about her life as a JW -- if you closely read the description on IMDB.
IMDB says this movie will be a drama focused on her success in the 1950's and her legal difficulties with her husband Walter Keane.
She didn't become a JW until after her divorce.

I knew her when she lived in Hawaii. I was only a small child at the time, but I knew who she was -- I knew the paintings, everyone talked about them, and I even knew that her ex claimed that he painted them. I remember she was nice and kindly, rather sweet...although that's only a child's view, but she was nice to me the time I met her. This was in the late '70s....so long ago!

There WAS an article about her in one of the rags, I mean mags.
I remember it distinctly. The most important question now would be: Did she ever escape the Borg?
It is so weird that I was just thinking about her recently and wondered if she ever got out. I couldn't remember her name. I have a cheap reproduction of one of her works from before she was a JW. It is in the attic somewhere. I sincerely hope she got out!

Interesting.
My mother-in-law had one of her paintings, when she died I ended up with it. My new step mother-in-law didn't like it
(said it belonged in a little girls room).
Anyway, after I left she took it off the wall. I am assuming she found out it might be worth some money.
Good JW behavior at it's best.

The Guardian:
The big-eyed children: the extraordinary story of an epic art fraud
In the 1960s, Walter Keane was feted for his sentimental portraits that sold by the million. But in fact, his wife Margaret was the artist, working in virtual slavery to maintain his success. She tells her story, now the subject of a Tim Burton biopic Margaret Keane at home today Margaret Keane at home in Napa, California. For years, she painted portraits of big-eyed children for which her husband took the credit. Photograph: Robert Gumpert for the Guardian

There’s a sweet, small suburban house in the vineyards of Napa, northern California. Inside, a family of devout Jehovah Witnesses bustles around, offering me a cheese plate. A Siamese cat weaves in and out of my legs. Everything is lovely. Sitting unobtrusively in the corner is 87-year-old Margaret Keane. “Would you like some macadamia nuts?” she asks. She hands me Jehovah Witness pamphlets too. “Jehovah looks after me every day,” she says. “I really feel it.”She is the last person you’d expect to be a participant in one of the great art frauds of the 20th century.
This story begins in Berlin in 1946. A young American named Walter Keane was in Europe to learn how to be a painter. And there he was, staring heartbroken at the big-eyed children fighting over scraps of food in the rubbish. As he would later write: “As if goaded by a kind of frantic despair, I sketched these dirty, ragged little victims of the war with their bruised, lacerated minds and bodies, their matted hair and runny noses. Here my life as a painter began in earnest.”
Fifteen years laterand Keane was an art sensation. The American suburb had just been invented and millions of people suddenly had a lot of wall space to fill. Some of them – those who wanted their homes to express upbeat whimsy – opted for paintings of dogs playing pool or dogs playing poker. But a great number of others, who wanted something more melancholic, went for Walter’s sad, big-eyed children. Some of the children held sad, big-eyed poodles in their arms. Others sat lonely in fields of flowers. They were dressed as harlequins and ballerinas. They just seemed so innocent and searching.
Walter himself was not a melancholic man. According to his biographers, Adam Parfrey and Cletus Nelson, he was a drinker and a lover – of women and of himself. This, for instance, is how he describes his first meeting with Margaret, the woman now sitting opposite me in Napa. It’s from his 1983 memoir, The World of Keane: “I love your paintings,” she told me. “You are the greatest artist I have ever seen. You are also the most handsome. The children in your paintings are so sad. It hurts my eyes to see them. Your perspective and the sadness you portray in the faces of the children make me want to touch them.”
“No,” I said. “Never touch any of my paintings.”
Walter and Margaret Keane work side by side in 1961. Walter and Margaret Keane work side by side in 1961. Photograph: Bettmann/Corbis
This conversation apparently took place at an outdoor art exhibition in San Francisco in 1955. Walter was still an unknown artist. He wouldn’t become a phenomenon for another few years. Later that night, his memoir continues, Margaret told him: “You are the greatest lover in the world.” They married.
Margaret’s memory of their first meeting is quite different.
The centre of Walter’s universe in the mid-1950s was a San Francisco beatnik club, The Hungry i. While comedians such as Lenny Bruce and Bill Cosby performed onstage, out at the front, Walter sold his big-eyed-children paintings. One night Margaret decided to go to the club with him.
“He had me sitting in a corner,” she tells me, “and he was over there, talking, selling paintings, when somebody walked over to me and said: ‘Do you paint too?’ And I suddenly thought – just horrible shock – ‘Is he taking credit for my paintings?’”
He was. He had been telling his patrons a giant lie. Margaret was the painter of the big eyes – every one of them. Walter might well have seen sad children in postwar Berlin, but he hadn’t painted them, because he couldn’t paint to save his life.
Margaret was furious. Back home she confronted him. She told him to stop. But something unexpected happened instead. During the decade that followed, Margaret would nod in respectful admiration as Walter told interviewers that he was the best painter of eyes since El Greco. She said nothing. Why did she go along with it? What was happening inside the Keane marriage?
Margaret takes me back to the beginning. It’s true that he charmed her at that art exhibition in 1955, she says. “He was just oozing with charm. He could charm anyone.” But the rest of the conversation didn’t happen. How could it have?
Their first two years were happy, but all that changed the night of the Hungry i. “Back home he tried to explain it away,” she says. “He said: ‘We need the money. People are more likely to buy a painting if they think they’re talking to the artist. People don’t want to think I can’t paint and need to have my wife paint. People already think I painted the big eyes and if I suddenly say it was you, it’ll be confusing and people will start suing us.’ He was telling me all these horrible problems.”
Walter offered Margaret a solution: “Teach me how to paint the big-eyed children.” So she tried. “And when he couldn’t do it, it was my fault. ‘You’re not teaching me right. I could do it if you had more patience.’ I was really trying, but it was just impossible.”

Margaret felt trapped. She wanted to leave, but she didn’t know how. How would she support herself and her daughter? “So finally I went along with it,” she says. “And it was just tearing me apart.”
By the early 1960s, Keane prints and postcards were selling in the millions. You couldn’t walk into a Woolworths without seeing racks of them. Luminaries including Natalie Wood, Joan Crawford, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and Kim Novak were buying the originals.
“Did you see any of the money?” I ask Margaret.
“No,” she says. “I just painted. But we moved to a nice house. There was a swimming pool. Gated. Servants. So I didn’t need to do anything except paint.” She smiles, ruefully. Outside in the sun, Walter was living the high life. “There was always three or four people swimming nude in the pool,” he wrote in his memoir. “Everybody was screwing everybody. Sometimes I’d be going to bed and there’d be three girls in the bed.” The Beach Boys would visit, and Maurice Chevalier, and Howard Keel. But Margaret rarely saw them, because she was painting 16 hours a day.
“Did the servants know what was going on?”
“No, the door was always locked,” she says. “The curtains closed.”
“You spent all those years with the curtains closed?”
“When he wasn’t home he’d usually call every hour to make sure I hadn’t gone out,” she says. “I was in jail.”
“Did you know about the affairs?”
She shrugged. “I didn’t care what he did by then.”
“It must have been lonely.”
“Yes, because he wouldn’t allow me to have any friends. If I tried to slip away from him, he’d follow me. We had a chihuahua and because I loved that little dog so much, he kicked it, and so finally I had to give the dog away. He was very jealous and domineering. And all along he said: ‘If you ever tell anyone I’m going to have you knocked off.’ I knew he knew a lot of mafia people. He really scared me. He tried to hit me once. But I said, ‘Where I come from men don’t hit women. If you ever do that again I’ll leave.’” She pauses. “But I let him do everything else, which was even worse probably.”
“Would he come home from his partying and demand you show him what you’d painted?” I ask.
“He was always pressuring me to do more,” she says. “‘Do one with a clown costume.’ Or: ‘Do two children on a rocking horse.’ One day he had this idea that I’d do this huge painting, his masterwork, to hang in the United Nations or somewhere. I had a month to do that.”
The “masterwork” was called Tomorrow Forever. It depicted a hundred sad-looking, big-eyed children of all creeds standing in a line that stretches to the horizon. The organisers of the
hung it in their Pavilion of Education. Walter felt deeply proud of the achievement. He wrote in his memoir that his dead grandmother told him in a vision that “Michelangelo has put your name up for nomination as a member of our inner circle saying that your masterwork Tomorrow Forever will live in the hearts and minds of men as has his work on the Sistine chapel.”
The art critic John Canaday reviewed Tomorrow Forever for the New York Times: “This tasteless hack work contains about 100 children and hence it is about 100 times as bad as the average Keane.” Stung by the review, the World’s Fair took down the painting.
“Walter was furious,” Margaret says. “I felt hurt that they didn’t want it and were saying nasty things. When people said it was just sentimental stuff it really hurt my feelings. Some people couldn’t stand to even look at them. I don’t know why - just a violent reaction. But so many people really love them. Little children love them. Even babies. So eventually I thought: ‘I don’t care. I’m just going to paint what I want to paint.’”
If you’d asked Margaret back then about her inspiration – which you never would have, of course – she would have shrugged and said she didn’t know. The paintings just flowed out of her. But now, she says, she thinks she understands: “Those sad children were really my own deep feelings that I couldn’t express in any other way. Their eyes were searching. Asking why. Why is there so much sadness? Why do we have to get sick and die? Why do people shoot each other?”
“Why is my husband so crazy?” I suggest. “Why did I get into this mess?” Margaret nods.
After 10 years of marriage, eight of them horrific, they divorced. Margaret promised Walter that she’d keep on secretly painting for him. And she did for a while. But after she’d delivered maybe 20 or 30 big eyes to him, she suddenly thought: “No more lies. From now on, I will only ever tell the truth.”
Which is why, in October 1970, Margaret told a reporter from the UPI everything. “He wanted to learn to paint,” she revealed, “and I tried to teach him to paint when he was home, which wasn’t often. He couldn’t even learn to paint.”
And so on. Walter went on the offensive, swearing that the big eyes were his and calling Margaret a “boozing, sex-starved psychopath” who he once discovered having sex with several parking-lot attendants.
“He was really nuts,” Margaret says. “I couldn’t believe he had so much hate for me.”
Margaret became a Jehovah’s Witness. She moved to Hawaii and started painting big-eyed children swimming in azure seas with tropical fish. In these Hawaii paintings you can see small, cautious smiles begin to form on the faces of the children. Walter’s life wasn’t so happy. He moved to a fisherman’s shack in La Jolla, California, and began to drink from morning until night. He told the few reporters still interested in him that Margaret was in league with the Jehovah’s Witnesses to defraud him. One reporter, from USA Today, believed every word, and they ran a story on Walter’s plight: “Thinking he was dead [Margaret] claimed to have done some of the Keane paintings. The claim, vehemently denied by a very much alive Keane, is in litigation.”
Margaret sued Walter. The judge challenged them both to paint a child with big eyes, right there in court, in front of everyone. Margaret painted hers in 53 minutes. Walter said he couldn’t because he had a sore shoulder.
“And there it is,” she tells me. She points to a framed portrait on the wall of a little girl with absolutely huge eyes, peering out nervously from behind a fence. “I painted it in Honolulu federal court. It has the exhibit number on the back.”
In fact the walls of Margaret’s home are filled with big-eye paintings – children, poodles, kittens. There’s barely an inch of empty wall space.
“That painting is symbolic of her triumph over the lies,” Margaret’s son-in-law tells me as he walks past us towards the kitchen.

Margaret won the court case, of course. She was awarded $4m, but she never saw a penny of it because Walter had drunk his fortune away. A court psychologist diagnosed him with a rare mental condition called delusional disorder. I ask Margaret if she knows anything about delusional disorder. She shakes her head and says she can’t even remember Walter being diagnosed with it.
“It’s when a person who is otherwise completely normal has a particular delusion they’re absolutely convinced of,” I say. “Quite often it’s a jealous husband convinced his wife is cheating on him. Sometimes the person is convinced that some impostor is taking credit for their genius.”
“I didn’t know that,” Margaret says.
“If you have the disorder it means you truly believe it,” I say.
Margaret thinks. “For a long time I felt very guilty about it,” she says.
“Why guilty?” I ask.
“If I hadn’t allowed him to take credit for the paintings, he wouldn’t have got as sick as he got.”
Walter died in 2000. He gave up drinking towards the end, but you get the sense that he missed those days, writing in his memoir that sobriety was his “new awakening, away from the drinking world of exciting sexy beautiful women, parties and art buyers”. By the 1970s, the big eyes had fallen from favour. Woody Allen mocked them in Sleeper, imagining a ridiculous future where they were revered.
But now, suddenly, there is a kind of renaissance. A Tim Burton biopic, Big Eyes, is about to be released, starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. Margaret has a cameo: “I’m a little old lady sitting on a park bench.”
“Was the film distressing to watch?” I ask her.
“It was really traumatic,” she says. “I really think I was in shock for a couple of days. Christoph Waltz – he looks like Walter, sounds like him, acts like him. And to see Amy going through what I went through … It’s very accurate. Then it started to dawn on me how fantastic the movie is.”
Margaret smiles, looking thrilled, and I realise that sometimes a wrong is so great it needs something as dramatic as a major biopic in which you’re the hero to heal the wounds.
• Big Eyes will be released in the UK on 26 December.

This was reported by Minneapolis TV station KMSP, and the link for the story below is http://launch.yahoo.com/read/news.asp?contentID=207277
1/12/02, 7 a.m. ET) -- Prince was married in Hawaii on New Year's Eve, to girlfriend Manuela Testolini. Testolini, 25, is 18 years younger than Prince (43). According to reports by KMSP-TV, Testolini--a former employee at Prince's Paisley Park Studios--and the singer tied the knot in a small Jehovah's Witness ceremony. When LAUNCH contacted two separate representatives of Prince, both responded with "No comment."
This is the second marriage for Prince. In February of 1996 while using the name the Artist (formerly known as Prince), Prince married then back-up dancer Mayte. Later that year, the couple's one-week old son died after being born with a fatal skull condition, clover lead syndrome. The two eventually divorced in 2000. Since that time, Mayte has been paired with rocker Tommy Lee of Motley Crue fame.

Hey Lydia,
Remember at the Kingdom Hall, it's "putting on appearances" that matters the most!! Apparently Prince has convinced enough of the JW leadership that he's really a changed man! (Cough, cough)
Mony,
He hee, it's only a matter of time. He'll be an apostate once he gets bored at the Kingdom Hall. Maybe (dreaming here) he'll let us have his Paisley Park studios for the Minnesota apostofest, say, in 2004?
Hannibal,
He won't be working any middle-class neighborhoods like where you and I live. No sir! He lives out by the rich areas surrounding Lake Minnetonka! If you live in a half-million dollar home in that area, you may expect to see the short princely one sashay up your driveway on a Saturday morning (between 9:30 and 10:45).

I thought JW's were supposed to be POLITICALLY NEUTRAL. Prince lives and proselytizes in L.A., and he came out in favor of the Republican party and strongly for Proposition 8 (the anti-gay marriage amendment that won the popular vote in California two weeks ago).
This guy is confused. A political JW???
Disclaimer at the end of the article: A Prince "insider" is disputing the quotes in the story.

Gay marriage and doing 'whatever you want' is wrong, says Prince
By PAUL WALSH, Star Tribune
Last update: November 17, 2008 - 3:43 PM
Prince, the gender-bending Minnesota rocker who now lives in California and makes the rounds as a Jehovah's Witness, spoke out in a newly released interview that the Bible opposes homosexuality and God has said "enough."
The comments from the Grammy-winning musician, who for decades has graced concert stages in high heels, makeup and flamboyant garb, appear in the Nov. 24 issue of New Yorker.
"So here's how it is," Prince began, "You've got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this." He pointed to a Bible.
"But there's the problem of interpretation, and you've got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn't."
Prince then moved to the other side of the political aisle, Democrats, saying, "They're, like, 'You can do whatever you want.' Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right."
When asked for his views on social issues--gay marriage and abortion--Prince tapped his Bible and said, "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.' "
Prince, who wrote sexually charged lyrics through much of his career, told the New Yorker that his change of faith came after a two-year debate with a musician friend. He likened it more to a "realization" rather than a "conversion."
He told the magazine that he attends meetings at a local Kingdom Hall, and he leaves his gated community in Los Angeles at times to knock on doors and proselytize. "Sometimes people act surprised, but mostly they're really cool about it," he said.
According to beliefnet.com, an independent website about the world's religions, the Jehovah's Witness faith that abortion is wrong, homosexuality is a "serious sin" and gender roles are defined: Men are the head of the household and women are loving caretakers who assist the husband in teaching the children.
The New Yorker piece was written by Claire Hoffman, a former entertainment writer for the Los Angeles Times. She also has written for the New York Times, Rolling Stone and Redbook.
One widely read celebrity gossip website, perezhilton.com, says that a Prince insider is challenging the article, saying that he was misquoted and the interviewer did not use a tape recorder.

Actually, that quote could be accurate. I was thinking of Genesis 18:20, 21 which is the account about Sodom and Gomorrah. The scriptures there say that God said he would go down and see whether they were doing what the outcry said they were doing.
Since Sodom and Gomorrah were associated with homosexuality, I think that's what Prince was raving about in his quote.

I just read about the same interview and the reporter described his 30,000 sq foot home in Beverly Hills - complete with purple thrones on either side of the fireplace. He definitely says the Republicans are for the bible and the Democrats are for 'anything goes'..but he insists that neither have the 'truth'. He leaves his gated community to go door to door - once in a while.
Wasn't there an article not that long ago in the Watchtower about 'idolatry, greed and materialism?'. The same reporter also describes the huge pictures of him in various states of undress that adorn the hallway going to his bedroom - he obviously idolizes himself.

This may be old news, and it's not something that holds incredible interest for me, but I thought someone on the board might know this Manuella Testolini. I found this through a search engine at WorldNews.com.

Prince show a mystery
The only sure thing about artist's cross-Canada tour is that it will be unpredictable
Sorelle Saidman
The Province
Monday, May 27, 2002
Fans will reign supreme when Prince and the New Power Generation hit the Orpheum tomorrow for the first stop on a cross-Canada tour. But it won't be business as usual for the music industry.
The artist currently known as Prince is making it very clear he has no interest in stoking the star-making machinery but he will, however, be giving his true fans one "heck" of a show.
The purple one, who announced the One Night Alone With Prince Canadian tour just six days ahead of this concert, gave a two-day ticketing head start to members of his New Power Generation Music Club. He is also inviting them to the soundcheck and quite possibly an after-show nightclub party. A clubber or two may even be invited on stage for a personal serenade.
Members pay an annual fee of $100 US for the privilege in addition to paying for the pricey tickets. They also have the option of buying exclusive music, including a One Night Alone CD. Once the Canadian tour wraps up later in June, the artist will be throwing a Seven Nights Alone all-star party at his Paisley Park studio in Minneapolis just for members.
In contrast, not only will he not talk to the media, he won't even issue them review tickets. The media will still fare better than the record label reps, though, as they may not be let in at all. Even the promoter is going to take a hit courtesy of an anti-corporate video playing in the background if the past tour is any indication.
The artist dislikes the business to the extent of writing "Slave" on his face in reference to his seemingly lucrative old contract with Warner Bros and reportedly canceling a tour, including last year's very briefly scheduled cross-Canada jaunt, in order not to inadvertently help promote a compilation CD issued by that label. He also once changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol to protest a publishing contract which has now expired.
And, he's been railing against corporate radio. The video targets Clear Channel because the promotion company also owns the largest chain of radio stations on the continent.
Prince currently does most of his business through his own company, Paisley Park Productions, on the Internet.
The only sure thing about the Prince show is that it will be unpredictable.
If recent history repeats itself, ticket buyers should get their money's worth at least musically, although those expecting the mega-staging of the Purple Rain tour or a greatest hits redux may be disappointed. The artist has been travelling with a stripped-down, bare-bones show and no set list. That said, at one recent appearance, Prince told fans not to expect "Purple Rain" and then played it anyway.
Tracks from last year's The Rainbow Children album will be represented but the rest is a crap shoot, although songs with profanity won't be included -- he's now a Jehovah's Witness. (Stalkers may want to check out a few services around town; he's been rumoured to make such appearances in other cities).
It's not clear who will be performing as the New Power Generation -- the promoter didn't even know ("His people are very hard to get a hold of," said Clear Channel's Trisha Soper).
Sales were brisk the first day but the concert has not sold out, although it is expected to do so before showtime, if not earlier.
Prince is particularly interested in Canada these days. He apparently married Canadian Manuella Testolini at a Jehovah's Witness ceremony in Hawaii New Years Eve, which explained his frequent trips to Toronto last year and the purchase of a $5.5-million home in that city's posh Bridal Path area by Testolini under the corporate name Gamillah Holdings, the title of a Prince song.

I was just listening to Prince's 'International Lover" this morning and wondering where he was channeling all of that suppressed sexual energy. As you may know, the 1st law of thermodynamics states that energy is neither created nor destroyed but remains constant. So I knew it would be a matter of a small amount of time before that sexual energy would be directed elsewhere.
I surely hope that the jws he studied with gave him a true picture of what a typical jw sex life is like oe else he is in for quite a letdown.

They wouldn't marry me and my straight-as-an-arrow-though-worldly husband nearly 18 years ago...'course he was a teacher and wasn't making quite so much money as Ex-Symbol.
My sister was disfellowshipped for shoplifting less than $5 worth of stuff. Not that shoplifting is a good thing, but still seems that there might be a double standard
Anybody remember that Michael Jackson was a Witness? This was years ago-during the "Thriller" era, though. I always thought it was funny that it was apparently OK for him to make that macabre video and "Billy Jean", but he wasn't disfellowshipped. Finally, when he became totally off the wall, it was announced that he'd "disassociated himself".
Money talks.

Prince Turns Simon Cowell Purple With Rage 05/31/2006 2:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
Lyndsey Parker Simon Cowell is used to criticizing others. And now he stopped attacking tone-deaf American Idol contestants and has focused his disapproval on Prince, one of the surprise special guests on last week's Idol finale.
The acid-tongued A.I. judge is reportedly angered by Prince's refusal to meet or sing with the Idol contestants or greet the audience, unlike other performers on the show. Instead, Prince simply sang two consecutive songs with his own backup girls, then immediately left the Kodak Theater venue.
Idol host Ryan Seacrest later admitted to the press that he had worried Prince would not show up at all, because he did not arrive at the Kodak Theater until a mere few minutes before he was set to perform.
Said Cowell in a characteristically sarcastic statement, "It just tells you how selfish [Prince] is. He comes on, not a word--'I'm not gonna sing with anybody else, I'm not gonna say goodbye.' Thank you for your generosity, Prince."

I personally thought it was really cool.
Unlike many of the washed up celebrities (aka Meatloaf) that showed up and REALLY NEEDED this live TV performance - Prince didn't need it.
To me he epitomizes a true superstar and that arrogance is part of what makes him Prince. He spent most of his career exposing a corrupt record industry - so the last thing he is gonna do is sit there and kiss Ryan Seacrest's ass, or even Simon's. I mean Simon and some of the other record label owners there represent some of the worst cheese on radio today.
And the way Prince sauntered off the stage, with swagger, was cool IMO.
For the record:
No, I am not a Prince Fan Club member. I don't even own any of his albums.
No, I don't post on any Prince messageboards.
I just appreciate his career, songwriting ability and musicianship.
Now if we could just get him out of this kooky cult ...

Whether it's a dub reason or not, he doesn't need to be around anyone. None of them have enough talent to be the next Prince anyway.
I wish I saw his performance. I would've watched idol if I knew he'd be on.

Now that Prince is starting a Bible study with the rest of the world, we will most likely not need all the other complicated explanations about the Bible and life. This is the truth!! Prince at home in L.A. Kevin Roderick • Bio • Email
Prince has lived in Los Angeles since last spring — that is, if you consider the rarefied gated nouveau complex of Beverly Park to be part of the real L.A. Writer Claire Hoffman visited the musician and Jehovah's Witness at home for The New Yorker and they got to talking about Hollywood, the Bible and gay marriage.
Inside, the place was done up in a generic Mediterranean style, although there were personal flourishes here and there—a Lucite grand piano with a gold-colored “Artist Formerly Known as Prince” symbol suspended over it, purple paisley pillows on a couch. Candles scented the air, and New Age music played in the living room, where a TV screen showed images of bearded men playing flutes. Prince padded into the kitchen, a small fifty-year-old man in yoga pants and a big sweater, wearing platform flip-flops over white socks, like a geisha....
Limping slightly, Prince set off on a walk around his new bachelor pad. Glass doors opened onto acres of back yard, and a hot tub bubbled in the sunlight. “I have a lot of parties,” he explained. In the living room, he’d installed purple thrones on either side of a fireplace, and, nearby, along a hallway, he had hung photographs of himself, in a Moroccan villa, in various states of undress. At the end of the hall, a gauzy curtain fluttered in a doorway. “My room,” he said. “It’s private.”
[skip]
Seven years ago, he became a Jehovah’s Witness. He said that he had moved to L.A. so that he could understand the hearts and minds of the music moguls. “I wanted to be around people, connected to people, for work,” he said. “You know, it’s all about religion. That’s what unites people here. They all have the same religion, so I wanted to sit down with them, to understand the way they see things, how they read Scripture."
[skip]
Recently, Prince hosted an executive who works for Philip Anschutz, the Christian businessman whose company owns the Staples Center. “We started talking red and blue,” Prince said. “People with money—money like that—are not affected by the stock market, and they’re not freaking out over anything. They’re just watching. So here’s how it is: you’ve got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this.” He pointed to a Bible. “But there’s the problem of interpretation, and you’ve got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn’t. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you’ve got blue, you’ve got the Democrats, and they’re, like, ‘You can do whatever you want.’ Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right.”
When asked about his perspective on social issues—gay marriage, abortion—Prince tapped his Bible and said, “God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’ ”

What would an elder make of the following? - Artist Formerly Known as Prince” symbol suspended over, candles (my jw is against candles on & off again, jw thing?), New Age music, pictures of bearded men is ok?, wearing platform flip-flops over white socks, like a geisha, he’d installed purple thrones (hmm), hung photographs of himself, in a Moroccan villa, in various states of undress (doesn't sound very dubby to me, self worship?) Prince hosted an executive who works for Philip Anschutz, the Christian businessman whose company owns the Staples Center (a non jw? bad association?). Nut job.

Perhaps there will be the future book of Prince in the bible. It talks about how God saw us just sticking it everywhere and diapproved. God then chose to send his message through the revised Study in the Scriptures as interpreted by Prince. He can play his purple Piano at the Beverly Hills Congregation meetings.

If you mean he kept his mouth shut about being a JW, you're right. But I don't think that was a conscious absitinence on his part: Michael Jackson was/is so self-focused that he could never keep his mouth shut about himself and all that he has suffered.
Who can forget Ophrah's painfully embarasing interview of the Gloved-One at Neverworld where he squeaked at length about how badly people treat him - and how, if they only took the time to listen, they'd see what a good man he is....Frankly, I prefer Prince's hilariously infantile take on religion to Michael's extremely annoying self-pity.

In the two Kevin Smith spoken word videos, he tells a story about how he goes out to Paisley Park (prince's studio's) and basically ends up filming a documentary on prince's new album, the JW's, etc. In the second spoken word film, he talks about how prince wanted to use the footage as a JW recruitment film. Now, smith is the director of Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, great dirctor, but dirty, dirty films, and dogma is one of the best indictments of religion I've ever seen. The prince part on the first spoken word performance is on disc 2 which i can't find online, but he talks more about it on the second film, and here's a link.

Didnt know Terrence Howard was a witness, does he currently go to meetings or was he was just raised? but anyhow none of these guys hold any position at all in the org. I use to go to the same KH as Damon Waynes, and I've watched him struggle and at no point was he ever a highly respected witness or anything, just another guy fighting the struggle of trying to make it. i'm pretty sure that these "celeb witnesses" are just floatin on the edge. not like they go to meetings as a MS and give talks an announcements and go out in service each day and then at night go film a movie about getting fellatio in a car, nah dont think so. dont try to use these guys to justify anything.

I dont think Terrance is an official dub, although he stated something like" I could not be a witness in my current lifestyle" I would say he's loosely connected. I think Prince is a great composer writer etc, but the fact he allowed himself to be controlled is very telling.

Prince of piety
Prince, The Rainbow Children (NPG Records): For a long time in the '90s, it was possible to listen to Prince without paying much attention to what he was actually saying. The basic rhythm tracks were so crisp, the guitar playing so pinpoint-specific, the vocals so evocative (one minute, he'd be a '50s jazz diva; the next, some block-rocking hip-hop head) that the meanings of his dervishlike meditations on Holy Lust and other utopias were secondary.
That's not so easy to do this time. Having recently embraced the teachings of the Jehovah's Witnesses, the author of "Gett Off" and "Kiss" delivers an overblown rock-funk opera about the coming apocalypse and the need to get right with the Creator.
The adventure begins with Prince's lugubrious, slowed-down voice (heard to annoying effect throughout) introducing a jazz-inflected sermon. Despite several inspired moments, Rainbow Children sets the tone: Even the suite's simple, plaintive refrain is interrupted by proselytizing interludes as Prince's usually keen musical instincts get sidetracked by his mission to spread the Word.
Still, buried within this erratic effort are maddening glimmers of the old, secular Prince, moments when a groove takes hold long enough to remind us of his mastery. "The Work, Pt. 1" is an old-school revival-meeting stomp that starts with a heated proclamation of devotion and gets hotter. "Mellow" is laced with characteristically bold, multitracked vocal harmonies. "The Everlasting Now" takes rubbery, horn-fueled funk through all kinds of hairpin turns, and the ballad "Last December" transforms thoughtful, Stevie Wonder-style chords into a rousing (if overly religious) call for unity.

Hey Mad:
I 've also heard the buzz about Prince's new album. The critics are raving about it. That has to account for something becasue I can't remember the last time an album contained wht can be virtually be called sermons as interludes and still be recognized as avante garde. I wonder what the commercial reponse will to it will be or has been, if it's already been relaeased.

HOLLYWOOD --
Nona Gaye is following in some mighty big footsteps.
Her father Marvin Gaye was a much-beloved soul singer who was shot and killed by his father after an argument on April 1, 1984, when Nona was just 10 years old."People love my father. They cry on my shoulder because they miss him so much. They want me to be him," says Gaye, who is a model, singer and actress.
"I believe my father is guiding me. When I meditate, I talk to him as if he were still here and I ask for his help."
Several record producers have asked Nona to do a posthumous duet of her father's hit single How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved You).
"It's something I want to do but I want to wait until I have established myself and my style.
I'm working on a new album right now.
"I released my first album when I was 18."
Nona performed the duet Love Sign with Prince.
"Prince is really into being a Jehovah's Witness. We haven't spoken since he converted."
In Michael Mann's biopic Ali, Gaye plays Muhammad Ali's second wife Belinda Boyd.

Proselytizing for Jehovah's Witnesses during last Sunday's Vikings game wasn't the smoothest call Prince has ever made. An Eden Prairie woman, who prefers to be identified only as Rochelle, said, "Door bell rings. My husband runs upstairs and says, `Prince is at the door!' I said, `No way.' " Even though this was an inopportune time, they let in the man who introduced himself as "Prince Nelson" and another man. "I'm terrible with names," Rochelle said. "He was a bass player for some group, a long time ago. Older gentleman." Larry Graham? "Very good," Rochelle said. "This is Sunday about 2 o'clock. And it's the night of Yom Kippur. My first thought is `Cool, cool, cool. He wants to use my house for a set. I'm glad! Demolish the whole thing! Start over!' Then they start in on this Jehovah's Witnesses stuff. I said, `You know what? You've walked into a Jewish household, and this is not something I'm interested in.' He says, Can I just finish? Then the other guy, Larry Graham, gets out his little Bible and starts reading scriptures about being Jewish and the land of Israel." Uh-oh. Rochelle said she could not help but think, the Vikings had possession of the ball about two seconds ago. "They stayed for about 25 minutes," Rochelle said. "Left us a pamphlet." She should have asked Symbolina for an autograph. "There's no reason to slam him," she said. "He didn't do anything wrong; he was very kind. We watched him leave. Outside is a big black truck with a woman, long dark hair, in the front seat and they left." The woman met the general description of Prince's supposed wife, Manuella. Rochelle seemed perplexed that Prince didn't seem to stop at any other houses in her neighborhood. "They go door-to-door. Walking. He wasn't walking. He was driving." Hey, he was knocking on doors during a Vikings-Falcons game - you can't expect Symbolina to follow ALL the rules of the religion he declared as his new faith in a 2001 magazine interview. "It was so bizarre, you would have just laughed," she said. The perfect esprit d'escalier came to Rochelle after Prince left: "If I showed up at Paisley Park, would you let me in your front door to talk about Judaism?" There was no response from Paisley Park, where a note seeking a comment was delivered Thursday.

I guess Prince is forced to do "hit-n-run" witnessing. There's no way he could go door-to-door and not draw a crowd.

Didn't Jesus draw the crowds?
We thought the part where Prince said "Can I just finish?" was funny. Like he doesn't care if the Jewish lady was interested or not, he just wanted to get his little token presentation over with so he could say he did it and report some time.

It should be horses for courses. Rather than go door to door like the plebs, Prince could arrange to give an Awake magazine away to everyone who buys a ticket to his shows, or something like that. Think of the placements. Woohoo he'd be so popular with his Congo. Exploit the lil fellah while he's still in.

If 600 people gather around you and you spend 10 minutes witnessing to them, I wonder if that counts as 100 hours?

Have any of you guys seen Prince's latest video where the 1st line of the song is "I don't want to take my clothes off, but I do"? There's this woman dancing "at" him, shaking and stuff. Is this type thing allowed for JWs?

That was the heading of a section in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's gossip column dated 8/12/01.
Prince Rogers Nelson, based in Minneapolis, is an internationally famous musician-composer-singer of the 80's and 90's. Recently he converted to the JW's. Here's an outsider's view of what likely was his attempt to "get his service time done":
Virtual evangelist?
While I've had no reports of Prince knocking on doors
for Jehovah's Witnesses, he may be meeting his
proselytizing duties in high-tech ways. A music
insider reports that Prince reportedly has been
e-mailing material of a religious nature. My insider
had the opportunity to read an e-mail purportedly from
Prince. My source couldn't follow the writings (but
who am I to talk?) and, of course, insider doesn't
wish to follow Prince's newfound appreciation for the
Bible, which 'clearly defines the roles of men and
women,' as Symbolina has previously stated. The
writings my insider saw were gibberish, with all the
words running together like one continuous word. More
and more, people are getting the impression that
Prince doesn't know who he is, as a musician and maybe
a person.
GopherWhy shouldn't truth be stranger than fiction? Fiction, after all, has to make sense.

I thought only the disabled and elderly got the "privilege" of alternatives to physically going out in field service. Why does the-artist-futurely-known-as-an-apostate get special treatment?
On another note, the presence of gibberish in a field service presentation does not necessarily preclude him from the ranks of loyal Dubdom.

Call me crazy... but Prince is one of my favorite artists! (To the chagrin of my family, he appealed to my dark side!) I personally love his music... kind of disappointing now that the music might be watered-down. He'll definitely lose his edge.

I wonder if he takes royalties off his old songs that are no longer "acceptable" now that he's a witness. I'm sure plenty of witness teens in the 80s had to throw out their Prince records, I wonder how the Society feels about him making money off songs glorifying immorality?
Stephanus

Undine,
I've seen so many music star conversions to Christianity which eventually come to nothing. Bob Dylan "backslid", Dan Peek (America) disappeared into obscurity. (Oh, and Barry McGuire did the worst thing - he changed over to country music!) I don't see Prince, with his strong-minded and eccentric nature, lasting too long in his new restrictive environment.

I fully agree with you. I wondered what ever became of Dan Peek...(Dewey and Gerry formed again w/out him?) Hmmm...and yes...Prince

it struck me as...Good humor!

College kid says Prince bodyguard swiped his camera after snapping shot C.J., Star Tribune
Published December 30, 2003 CJ30
Prince's bodyguard reportedly played the role of airport Scrooge Monday when he swiped an Edina man's new digital camera. Anthony Fitzgerald, 19, was on his way to London for New Year's when his friend Carah Barrett said "Oh, isn't that Prince?" Symbolina was deplaning near an L.A. flight, the college kids believe. "Sure enough, it was him in his sunglasses and everything trying to make a big deal out of nothing," said Fitzgerald, reached Tuesday via cell phone. "There was one of those carts waiting for him. He hopped on that and was waiting I guess for the rest of his party. I went over and took a picture," said Fitzgerald. "I turned around and right in front of my face was his bodyguard who said What the hell do you think you're doing? Snatched the camera out of my hands and got on the thing and they drove off." I attempted to get Prince's side of the encounter Tuesday through his NYC attorney Londell McMillan. "We do have a report of it," said Lt. Matt Christenson of the Twin Cities airport. "The report is still in process and under investigation." Fitzgerald said "I called (airport police) as I was on the plane, and they wanted to delay the plane so I could fill out a police report. I didn't want to hold up 109 people. I told them when I came into Minnesota I would do it then." Fitzgerald's mom, Michelle Lee, said she called to make a complaint with airport police, but she was told that her son needs to finish this. "It's on file," Lee said. "First I call, talked to security, and security said we can't do anything. I said, 'Don't tell me you can't do anything about it. This is ridiculous!' This is a good kid." Fitzgerald was a very upset kid when he called his mom from the airport while she was working her server job at Bacio in Minnetonka. Fitzgerald, seen in a holiday Walmart commercial playing with an X-Box, goes to KU in Lawrence, Kansas while Barrett attends NDSU in Fargo. "Here is a college kid who works at Russell Stover down in Lawrence for like $7 an hour; part-time job while he's going to school; second year down there. Come on. He doesn't have money," said his mom, reiterating, "I mean, this is a good kid. Never been in trouble. Super kid and just really likes Prince." Make that liked Prince. Fitzgerald said he previously thought pain and suffering claims in lawsuits were silly, until now: "It surprised me. It really just shocked me because this man appears out of nowhere and yanked the camera out of my hand." After work Monday, Lee went home and started working the Web to see whether there is a way to reach Prince. "He's like wiped off the face of the Earth. Nothing on the Internet. Couldn't get ahold of Paisley Park. Nothin'," said Lee. But she knows Paisley's location. "When I get off work at Bacio today, I'm heading out there. I'm leaving him A NOTE!" she said. "I'm furious. I want my son's camera back. That is wrong and dirty. Who does this big goon think he is?" Is this anyway for a door-knocking member of Jehovah's Witnesses to allow his representatives to act?
C.J. is at 612-332-TIPS or at cj@startribune.com, where she never opens attachments. So don't even try. It would be wise to state a subject if you want her to actually open your e-mail. More of this fine attitude can be viewed on FOX9 Thursday mornings.

Our local newspaper has an article about the "The Worst & Best of Everything" for 2003. Prince is on there as one with the Worst Career Move. He ("A Committed Jehovah's Witness")a was found knocking on the front of a Minneapolis couple trying to convert them! The woman said, "Left us a pamphlet. He didn't do anything wrong. He was kind." Prince they left in a waiting car and didn't appear to stop at any other houses.

Prince'
I was a loving tyrant' ... Prince
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian's Film&Music, Prince said: "It's fun being in Islamic countries, to know there's only one religion. There's order. You wear a burqa. There's no choice. People are happy with that." When asked about the fate of those unhappy with having no choice, he replied: "There are people who are unhappy with everything. There's a dark side to everything."
Prince embraced religion in 2001, when he became a Jehovah's Witness. "I was anti-authoritarian but at the same time I was a loving tyrant," he told the Guardian. "You can't be both. I had to learn what authority was. That's what the Bible teaches. The Bible is a study guide for social interaction.
"If I go to a place where I don't feel stressed and there's no car alarms and airplanes overhead, then you understand what noise pollution is. Noise is a society that has no God, that has no glue. We can't do what we want to do all the time. If you don't have boundaries, what then?"
Prince's views on the internet, however, have not changed. He has long been a vociferous critic of those who feel they have the right to post his music or even his image online - in 2007 his lawyers instructed fansitesto remove all photographs and images related to his likeness. He told the Guardian: "I'm supposed to go to the White House to talk about copyright protection. It's like the gold rush out there. Or a carjacking. There's no boundaries." Because of the problem with piracy, he said, he has no plans to record another album.
His unease about the web is not just a matter of legality for him, however, but one of aesthetics. "I personally can't stand digital music," he said. "You're getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can't feel anything. We're analogue people, not digital."
Despite the effects of the internet on his album sales, Prince remains one of pop's biggest stars. In 2007 he played 21 nights at the 20,000-capacity O2 arena in London, selling out all of them and £13.7m. He criticised the organisers of this weekend's Glastonbury festival, claiming the annual rumours that he is to play the festival are just an attempt to sell tickets on the back of his stardom. "They use my name to sell the festival," he said. "It's illegal. I've never spoken to anyone about doing that concert, ever.

Completely BRAINWASHED by the WT ..perhaps it is good to ask the women in Islam how do they feel when they get married from 9 years old, a guy in the mid 30's because her father promised her...or perhaps they should ask all those women who are stoned to death because they violated some stupid law made by some misogynists nomads, or because someone raped them and since they didn't scream loud enough, so they are charged with prostitution!!!
Give us a break Prince...I didn't expect less from a guy who follows blindly WT...both are fanatic fundamentalists any how

Only one country I know of that requires women to cover. And they don't require burkas or chadri's, actually. They just require a woman to be covered from neck to feet. I've been to Mecca (Saudi Arabia) and I didn't wear a burka, just a loose-ish long sleeve shirt and long skirt. My waist, (ah, when I had one!) was evident. I covered my hair with a simple scarf. I was not harrassed in any way.
Some areas have customs requiring it, and in places where extremists are in control (terrorists) it is required for safety, but I am not aware of anywhere where a 'burka" is required by any official law. To say that it is required by custom is sometimes true-but there is usually a bigger explanation than simplistic comments such as Princes' .
BTW, it is just as much "required" by custom that men wear long tunics or gowns, even (kameez or thobes) to protect THEIR modesty. Folks usually miss that when they start going off on women's customary clothing. When a man wears western clothes, they go down a few notches in respect among many Muslims. Some try, like their wives, to reach a compromise acceptable to modesty and the western standards for business wear.
Prince's clothes would be considered pretty raunchy in that part of the world.

The reason Prince got involved with the JWS is because he's an idiot.
Mind you the way he looks these days one could speculate that he's not involved with the JW anymore.

Prince: It is fun being in Islamic Countries - ridiculous comment from a pampered pop star. Celebrities often mindlessly enthuse over third world countries - I've read about Muhammad Ali saying how wonderful Zaire was (!), before he fought George Foreman.
What's stopping Prince from leaving America (the Great Satan) and moving to an Islamic country?

According to current information, Prince is an active JW whereas Michael Jackson cut his personal involvement with the religion in the mid 1980s. Tributes have flowed from so many celebrities since Michaels'death, but there have been none from Prince. As far as I can tell, no media have even approached Prince seeking his view - which is strange, given the eerie similarities between Prince and Michael.
If Prince has in fact paid tribute, could a poster give me the link?

Hit Maker Prince Turns His Back on Raunchy Routines
1 comment(s) September 29, 2008 09:33:58 GMT
He told USA Today, becoming a Jehovah's Witness advocate and reading the bible have contributed to his decision to ditch his raunchy past.
Prince
See larger image © Tom Walck/PR Photos
Willing to get better with his growing age, Prince has a change of heart that he decided to turn his back on his raunchy past. The hit maker openly admitted he no longer wants to write songs with lusty lyrics and perform dirty dancing on-stage because he does not want to offend his fans, who as time goes by have grown up and had children.
Talking about his determination, Prince told USA Today, "I did the Dirty Mind tour and pushed that envelope off the table. What I didn't do, Madonna finished. I don't want to go back. You have to get out of your own way." He went on revealing the fact that he is a Jehovah's Witness advocate has also contributed to his decision. Giving credit to the bible, which he often reads, Prince furthermore remarked "that's another way faith has changed me."
Notwithstanding with that, Prince has just launched his first book, "21 Nights." The set is a multi-media volume based on his 21 consecutive sold-out concerts at London's O2 arena back in the summer of 2007. He previously stated that the tome features poetry which he wrote himself, 124 never-before-seen photographs by Hollywood's Randee St. Nicholas who was given backstage access during the concerts, and a live sessions CD titled "Indigo Nights" from the concerts after-parties with new music by him

No Prince wasn't a JW during his childhood like the Jacksons (for example) were.
Here's a quote from the Wikipedia entry on Prince:
In 1997, Prince approached funk bassist Larry Graham, one of his childhood idols, with questions about his [Graham's] Jehovah's Witness faith. In a later interview, Graham stated that Prince was in need of Biblical answers and advice and that Graham was glad to answer. Prince apparently became very interested in the religion: around this time he began censoring some of his more provocative song lyrics in concerts, as well as editing various religious references in his songs that he had come to believe were Biblically inaccurate. [citation needed] He was baptized by Jehovah's Witnesses in 2001, marking his formal conversion to the faith. It was also at this time that he also released the album The Rainbow Children, which relied heavily upon Jehovah's Witness religious themes.
The insertion of Graham's was mine.

I recently watched a couple live Prince tracks on the local cable and was disgusted by Prince's effort to "count his time" while singing Purple Rain, replete with references to "everlasting life," etc.
I wanted to vomit. The crown in attendance looked like a bunch of dubs. He is an incredibly talented musician who is no longer worthy of listening to. Sad.

I think one of the most sickening aspects of all this is the way the JWs make special provisions for their celebrity members. Any garage-band rocker amount normal JW kids would probably get reproved just for the hair style and being in a garage band instead of pioneering.

I knew some JWs who formed a classic rock cover band and were playing in area bars and taverns. They even got to go on live TV on a cable access channel (envision Wayne's World).
Some dubbies got their panties in a wad and complained to the elders who talked to the CO who told the elders to pull the plug. All the members were counseled for playing debasing music, worldly associations and emulating worldly fashions.
It didn't bother me at the time...they weren't that good and I was sick of hearing Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Eagles, some of the more covered bands of the time.

Larry Graham gave a talk at my hall once. It was a very interesting talk (one of the very few I ever heard). Seemed like a nice guy, too. I kind of feel sorry for Prince, it must be hard as an artist to confine your creativity to the box the JW's try to put you in.

I'm sure you've all heard about Prince becoming a baptized JW, right? I've been a Prince fan since the early 80's. Only been a JW since the mid 90's. Anyhooo, whenever I'm at the Hall (not often anymore) and that horrible, low quality taped piano music starts playing, I can't help but think "It has just got to drive Prince crazy to listen to this!" Here's this musical genius who taught himself to play several instruments by the age of 12 and this is the "spiritually uplifting" music he has to listen to at the meetings. What's up with that music?!? With as much money and resources as the witnesses have, you'd think they could at least have decent music to play at the meetings? Right?! I just hope that becoming a JW won't stifle Prince's seemingly unending well of creativity. That would just be a terrible shame. I can only imagine how some of the old elders who had never heard of Prince before must treat him. I bet they're watching him all the time and I'm sure they have many issues with his naturally androgynous appearance.

Hit Maker Prince Turns His Back on Raunchy Routines
1 comment(s) September 29, 2008 09:33:58 GMT
He told USA Today, becoming a Jehovah's Witness advocate and reading the bible have contributed to his decision to ditch his raunchy past.
Prince

Sad.

It is truly vomit-worthy.
I think one of the most sickening aspects of all this is the way the JWs make special provisions for their celebrity members. Any garage-band rocker amount normal JW kids would probably get reproved just for the hair style and being in a garage band instead of pioneering.
Double standard rubbed in nose of all normal Dubs, and apparantly they are eating it all up.

Jehovah's Witness advocate has also contributed to his decision. Givingcredit to the bible, which he often reads, Prince furthermore remarked "that's another way faith has changed me."
LOL! A real knee-slapper.

They are the nicest people.
The ex-JDubs here should appreciate them because there is a lot of jealousy they have to deal with "with'in the ranks."
Don't be a hating... they have enough of that already.

Larry Graham gave a talk at my hall once. It was a very interesting talk (one of the very few I ever heard). Seemed like a nice guy, too. I kind of feel sorry for Prince, it must be hard as an artist to confine your creativity to the box the JW's try to put you in.

That's all I'm saying.
Back in the day... I remember the book study elder - at the end of the study.. Anyone have any good stories to tell?
So I'm telling about Prince and his experience about his first talk.
And I tell you...
Everyone could wait to say how - "Yeah... like Prince is REALLY a witness"
The average Elder can't stomache the thought that they are washing windows and Prince and Larry are performing in front of THOUSANDS of adoring fans...
And according to them... they will ge the SAME reward.
I applaud Prince and Larry.

That would be an upside if most of the entertainment community didn't already think he was a joke for joining the witnesses in the first place and give no heed to his "unloading" about the truth of the dubs.

Hey Guys,
With all the talk lately about Micheal Jackson, I wanted talk about Prince.
A few months ago, hung out with Prince. I was also planning on going to a Public Talk meeting with him, but I got into town too late. I spent the concert backstage with Santana and Chris Tucker (I didn't get to meet Chris Tucker though). I went as a guests of Larry Graham. I got to get to know Prince and meet his new wife.
Whether or not you believe JW to be the truth or not, I wanted to say that Larry and Prince are about the most down to earth persons I've ever met.
And although I don't know Micheal Jackson, I think anyone of us would be hard pressed to judge him either. I admit that he has some strange habits, but we never walked in his shoes.
What made me think of this post is all the negative stuff about MJ. I always think it's amazing when people judge another - but most of the time - we don't even have a clue what they are going through.
Oh, the one thing that BURNED ME UP, was after I got back from the concert - I gave my experience to the group after a bookstudy of how well Prince was doing.
The look of disgust on peoples faces - saying to the effect - he doesn't deserve to be a witness.
I guess my point is - judging people - in and out of the truth is WRONG. I guess the best illustration I could come up with is a person that plays Single A baseball and can hit homeruns all the time. Take that same guy and stick him in the major leagues and he'll strike out every time.
We don't know what it's like to play up in another persons level.

What a self rightous bunch! I thought they would have been keen to have such an accomplished artist in their midst.
They often brag about famous people joining them as if somehow it demonstrated how they had the truth, naturally they dont bother mentioning how many famous people are catholic.
Thanks for sharing your story, very interesting. BTW is Prince baptised?

I live in the Twin Cities area and met Larry Graham at a district convention. I totally agree, he is about the most down-to-earth person you will ever meet! What a gentleman. (And his wife & daughter were so friendly!)
And I also agree that the judgmentalism about people like Prince is a by-product of the general arrogance of JW's. He obviously is too worldly to "belong" in their opinion. Or his motives are suspect, or whatever. They don't know the man, so how can they quickly come to an accurate judgment about him?
But gossip and guessing games fill the JW's social life. Their lives would likely be boring without something vicious like that to do, sadly!
As far as MJ, we had a thread going yesterday where the majority of the sentiment that came forth was that yeah Michael is not normal, but that doesn't mean he's a pedophile. The accusations from 1993 were clearly motivated by a chance to get rich at Michael's expense. And the media gets ratings and advertising dollars because of playing up the possible-perversion angle.
People just love to put down others, it makes them feel better in a sick, twisted way.

Yeh I don't have anything against Prince or MJ, they are a bit kooky tho you have to admit.
I have little knowledge of Princes' private life other than he had a baby that died and shortly after that he apparantly found The "TROOF" . I have listened to some of his latest music namely Rainbow Children and I must say, I don't really like it, and can read the message in at least one of his songs towards so called apostates, and the "Digital Gardens" which I interpret as The Internet, we have built to bring down the chosen ones, hehehe now that's kooky. Personally I prefer his older stuff, before he became a dub.
I don't personally think he'll remain a dub, but that's just my opinion.
Whose Larry Graham?

Prince drove down the dirt road I lived on once. It was in Healesville, which is in the sticks outside of Melbourne. Anyway, theres a huge Wildlife sanctuary there and Prince booked it one afternoon, he flew in by chopper, and the road between the chopper pad and the sanctuary was my street. A monentary brush with glory. sigh.

Who's Larry Graham?
A composer/singer who played with Sly and the Family Stone in the 60's, and later formed his own group Graham Central Station. His best known popular hit was "One in A Million". He converted to the JW's in the 80's (if memory serves me correctly).
His life story appeared in the 90's in the Awake! magazine under the title "I Found One in a Milion".
Here's a brief summary of his musical career: http://www.rhino.com/Hotpress/78388pr.lasso

This judgment thing is for the birds.
Where did this phrase "for the birds" originate?
It was coined before the era of the automobile. People would ride in horse and carriage across city streets to their destination.
Occasionally the horses would have to relieve themselves in the streets. In the dung was found undigested oats.
Birds would fly down and pick out the oats. Yummy.
I'm not making any of this up.
So for the birds really means full of crap.

Prince has actually been to the bar where I work. I have heard nothing but positive remarks of how nice he is, and what a gentleman he is, when he visited our bar.
His wife, she's from Toronto, and I know they have a home in the NICE part of town.
I'm not surprised to read some of the positive remarks about him. I have seen him, but not met him.
I have, however, sat beside Dennis Leary, and he was great! Had a few beers with him, and he was hilarious, and down-to-earth as well as very easy to talk to. He is as funny as you can imagine .

I'm sure he appears very down to earth.
If you've put them on a pedestal, all celebrities seem "down to earth" when you meet them. You realize that they have to go to the bathroom like everybody else, and in many cases are just as nervous for your acceptance as you are of theirs.
Your comments about the book studies reaction seems right on par; if I remember correctly, I've seen the same look from witnesses regarding Prince, and most other celebrity witnesses.

One of the reasons why I was so excited about meeting Prince is that if you know anything about him - you don't get backstage unless you know someone. And if you know Larry - you're gold.
He did his last set with Santana and when he got off stage I congratulated him on a great show. The one things I noticed is after I shook his hands, his hands were dry.
I mean, here's a guy that just played for almost three hours and gets off stage and it's just a day of work for him.
My wife got to talk with him at length about meetings and so forth. At the time, he was explaining how he had is second talk coming up.
Anyway, going back to the first comment - at the time - the general attitude of the friends back home was like "Well - lets see how long this lasts (him being a witness)."
I think most of the witnesses here get totally fumed up whenever they see a brother with money or any measure of fame.
As if, the only REAL witnesses are the ones that mop floors.

Aw c'mon Six. You haven't met the man. When meeting Larry Graham, I didn't feel like I was in the presence of a "star" at all. I felt like I was just talking to a very nice guy when I met him. I had no preconceived notions about the man, not particularly being a fan of his music.
Larry really seems to buy the Witness doctrine, and he seems to have "sold" it lock, stock and barrel to Prince the Artist. And for now it fills a need for Prince, I guess.
SixofNine
SixofNine 13 years ago
And if you tell me you think a person can be "down to earth" and a JW at the same time, I simply don't see how. Not to mention a freakazoid JW at that.
Please don't argue with my phrasing, you'll lose. Here is a man who became a JW while a fairly big music star... managed to become a witness, and play the witness power game to the hilt, keep his career in music alive and thriving, while wining and dining JR Brown. In terms of real life spending power, the JW religion has somehow not cost this man what it has cost most people. Things would be quite different, btw, if his big hit had been "Irresistable bitch" instead of "One in a Million" (great tune, btw, especially done as reggea). He's a freakazoid witness. More power to him.... except... well, that's the problem, all that "power to him" influences other people, like, for instance, Prince Nelson Rogers anything in heels .
Some people think JR Brown is really down to earth too. I wonder what JT thinks.
But confuzcious point is well taken, rank and file witnesses view people like Prince with much suspicion. Almost as if they would like to create a self-fulfilling prophecy that he will fail to "make the truth his own". And you know what? If Prince didn't have his head so far in the clouds, if he was just a regular joe, I think he'd have noticed that witnesses aren't really accepting of him. He's quite insulated from the reality of it all.
One thing JW's don't have room for (conceptually) is artistically induced individuality.

Dude, even when you're being serious it still just comes out don't it! ROTFL!
I'm not surprised that Prince would get caught up in the JW's. He was always a pretty spiritual person. Face it most pl that dabble in drugs and sex really are just trying to find meaning or satisfaction in life and that pretty much equates to being spiritual, imo. I heard him say during an interview yrs ago that the song 'Let's Go Crazy' was about God and Satan. All it takes is a chance enounter with the right person and a personal tragedy to make a person re-evaluate their life and decide he needs to make some changes. The jw's pitch is perfect for ppl that find themselves in that predicament.

I think there are wonderful people both in and out of the organization. To say that one is worse then another, is not a very fair way at looking at people. When people start classifing people as all bad and expecting me to feel the same, I normally walk away and loss their phone number and forget their address. My mom is in the organization, and so is my sister. I love them both and they would do anything for my wife and I. Yes, there is truly good people inside and out.
Although I have never been a huge fan of Prince. I hope what ever he does, brings him happiness.

well said.
How can a wealthy, celebrity JW with fan clubs devoted to them, etc., ever conceive of how devastating the WT's institutionalized shunning policy is to your average Joe Blow JW who gets sawn asunder by the WT judicial machine.
I wonder how much d2d Prince is expected to do. If there is any one thing that would serve as a functional excuse to not have to engage in this dreary dub ritual, it would be being a very recognizable celebrity.

Well said. The WT system is deleted up. I'm sure they just toss the prodigal son scripture at them, and tell them to shut the deleted up or els they'll get DFed for not following instructions. You can't blame the bookstudy people for being pissed. I mean, while they were cleaning toilets and sacrificing everything in their lives for the WT, Prince was singing about masturbating in an elevator and probably living life to its full limits. Now he skipps in to the WT hope at the last minute after his career has arched to collect the full reward that the WTS can offer. Meanwhile, the 'bookstudy' people stand by, wearing 2nd hand clothes, living literaly hand-to-mouth, hands dirty from all that toilet scrubbing, missing teath they couldn't afford from dental care... and a confused look on their face.

All it takes is a chance enounter with the right person and a personal tragedy to make a person re-evaluate their life and decide he needs to make some changes. The jw's pitch is perfect for ppl that find themselves in that predicament.
That's what I was refering to in my earlier post when I mentioned the death of his baby, and subsequent divorce.
I'm sure however that he will do all he can to impress the hierarchy, only to find out eventually, that he too has been duped.
The following are the words off his recent Album Rainbow Children, very much pro the (b)org, and against us so called banished ones, judge for yourselves. sheesh. Tell me he hasn't been brainwashed already!
Digital Garden
Love, like a rose in bloom
All of the Rainbow Children will feel it soon
2 the east, word traveled about this energy
Until it reached the Banished Ones
Who just wanted this love 2 cease
They now fallen in2/The Resistor's dream
And they built a Digital Garden/Or so it seemed
In this brilliant darkness/So-called angels of light/"Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies"
And all the Rainbow Children/Will stand and fight
4 everlasting, everlasting life/4 the one who sits on the right
4 Him we're willing to do the work
The following is read out as part of the composition with a voice that can only be described as Demonic sounding.
The Banished Ones approaching the palace shouted obscenities. They tried 2
confuse the Rainbow Children and dethron their king. Using the lies promoted
by the whosepapers, hellavisions, and scagazines- The Banished Ones
constructed a Digital Garden around the palace that extended throughout the
world. Furthermore they demanded compensation 4 their time spent in the
palace b4 the exile. This was noise! "So be it," said the Wise One, and
gladly obliged with an INVISIBLE DEED. The Banished Ones accepted and
returned to their place of birth in MendaCity. As 4 the Rainbow Children,
they began deconstructing the Digital Garden. Door to door they went in
search of those willing to do The Work.
Now tell me again he's down to Earth?
More like somewhere on Pluto I think, along with the hierarchy.
He is probably a nice enough person, in that he doesn't really want to hurt anyone, however I still think he is well and truly brainwashed, and the problem with having such a high profile person as Mr Nelson a JW is that he will be respected by most, almost idolized by dubs, and that gives him power, to spread their propaganda and make it more practicable. There will always be the few that will resent him for whatever their reasoning may be; however with most celebrities the opposite is more often true.

Exactly. And who fed him that stuff about "apostates"? Larry Graham. Yep, the dude probably hasn't even put on the new personalityto the point of not wearing high heels, but already he's got the JW brainwashing on "opposers" and df'd ones. All thanks to the very down to earth Larry Graham.

Anymore I think the first thing they try to hammer home when you are studying is...DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU HEAR ABOUT JW'S UNLESS IT IS PRINTED IN THE SOCIETY'S OWN LITERATURE!!!! (Read that Awake! article on propaganda that they had out a few years ago and see how they directly contradict themselves in this matter)
So, this dig against apostates in this song really is pretty hilarious, when you realize that in all likelihood he probably has never read CofC, never visited freeminds, he is condemning something he has no first-hand experience with, because he has bought into the JW propaganda machine.
I remember one of his ex-wives saying that Prince thinks he is God. As I've stated in other threads, cults like JW are taylor-made for people who think they're unique and somehow better than other people. I don't think I'm reaching to say that this describes the Purple One.

I did a double take at our circuit assembly a couple years ago as I walked past Prince. He is in our circuit I guess, and there he was. He is hard to miss.
Larry Graham was interviewed at the District Convention last year. I really thought it was incredible how he was used as an example of someone who was able to simplify his life and pioneer. I guess even though I am not a multi-millionaire musician, I should somehow be able to arrange my life to devote more time to the ministry.

Hey confuzcious,
I absolutely love Prince and his music. I don't have any of his music anymore, I threw all the cassettes I owned of him away a long time ago when I felt guilty for owning them. But, I really think as an artist he has true character and I wish I wouldn't have listened to the propaganda about music.
And I actually met Larry Graham back in 1993. He used to be an elder at the congregation I was attending and had come back for a visit. The Watchtower we were studying for that Sunday happened to be on "debased music". He is a down to earth person.
As for Prince, I am going to renew my collections of his music and party like it's 1999...again.

This goes back to a thread some time ago about how the assemblies and conventions use out of touch experiences of how people make more time for the ministry. Gimme a break. Graham doesn't have to work 40-50 hours a weeks, 52 weeks a year, 40-50 years. Of course he can make time for pioneering. Give me a million or two and I could make time too. On the other hand, you parade a successful, rich, muscian pioneer around on stage and how are you going to convince the youth in the audience not to pursue their talents instead of full-time pioneering?
So these guys were with Santana, huh? I wonder if they have been counseled on their association with worldly people. If normal dubs aren't even supposed to own a Santana album, then actually hanging out with the dude has gotta be a no-no. Did they join him on stage to play Black Magic Woman?

So I heard an interview with the "Black eyed Peas" who mention they jammed with Prince at his home recently, only to have one excited member yell to Prince....."Your the Sh#t man!" Well how would a Witness react to that???? A staff member later told them Prince did not like swearing in his house. Prince later aproached the band member to explain he did not like swearing in his home, it's degrading etc.......I guess dressing up like a New York Pimp daddy is totally fine though?????

I know people change, but puh-leeeze. Prince was all about double-entendre in many of his songs.
I mean, Little Red Corvette was about a woman's vagina and how he was about to *drive* it.
He gets out at the Superbowl halftime show with a phallic guitar. Puh-leeeeeze.
Just don't say "shit" in his home.
If he said he doesn't want words said around children, well okay. But he's got such a JW "holier-than-thou" attitude coming out.

Thats hilarious coming from a guy who during his half time show at the super bowl, made a posturing pose
with his guitar like he has a big dick. Now thats what I call vulgar, specially with millions of children watching that show.
I guess its hard to be a fag when you don't want to be one.

LOL. "Swearing" to JW's and other hardcore fundamentalist groups is more than just a curse or an oath. It's pretty much any kind of coarse slang and "Barnyard" expression.
Which raises a silly question: Since "Cuss" is slang for "Curse" is a JW cursing when he uses the word, "Cussing?"

Prince is trying to revert what the media used call him the little dirty one, he's still a little dirty one though,
but now with righteous glaze over himself.
The little dirt one has engaged himself with a little dirty religion in a attempt to make him look clean and pure.
Thats an irony in itself.

Well, he has to expect that. Not for recent material, but because he is famous for introducing swearing to mainstream music. The 1999 album has the F word in "Let's Pretend We're Married". Purple Rain was so filthy (a mainstream album) that it sparked the Parental Advisory labels. Religious leaders wanted it outright banned, but the RIAA wanted the freedom to put out music with swearing. They compromised by allowing swearing in the music, but there would be a warning label on records with swearing or graphic art.
I have seen other Prince works that have "dirty" material. The song Raspberry Beret is very sexually suggestive, though it lacks swearing. Music from 1986 and 1987 by Prince also contains dirty material. Prince's 1988 work features explicit artwork. His 1992 album also has the F word. So, he really needs to expect that people are going to remember him as the pioneer of swearing in mainstream music, since he is the one that first got us those explicit content warnings on records.
However, that doesn't mean his recent or current music is dirty. I would say he has cleaned up (and blah-ified) his music, and anyone that was a fan of Prince before around 1995 will be very disappointed with his current music. But, anyone that puked when hearing his filthy music before might wish to give his post-1999 material a listen. There is no comparison between the two.

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Prince pleaded with strippers to keep their clothes on during a recent night out.
The 'Purple Rain' singer, who is a Jehovah's Witness, is said to have begged the gorgeous girls to cover up while he was partying at top Los Angeles nightclub Xenii.
According to reports, Prince told the strippers: "It's wrong to dance like that. You're too good for this. You shouldn't be selling yourself so cheap."
A source added: "The girls told him they needed the money. Prince even asked them how much they were paid per night and offered to give them twice as much to stop."
The strippers reportedly rejected his offer insisting they were happy to flaunt their shapely curves.
Although the diminutive music legend was unable to persuade the girls to keep their clothes on, he did convince nightclub bosses not to play hip-hop songs containing obscene lyrics while he was there.
Since becoming a Jehovah's Witness, a dogmatic type of Christian sect, Prince now refuses to perform over 50 of his singles because of the explicit lyrics contained in them.
His religious transformation began with the tragic loss of his child, Gregory, who died in October 1996 from a rare skull disease called Pfieffer's Syndrome.
The star has even reportedly refused a much-needed hip replacement operation - because the religion does not allow blood transfusions. Cheers! Atlantis-

Holy Moley.
I woulda accepted the money and then kept on dancing another night.
Ah, Prince. I guess he is the right amount of "eccentric" (i.e. weird, but rich) to be a Jehovah's Witness.
Didn't he convert when his name was still Symbol? Did they call him Brother Symbol? Do they call him Brother Prince now? Inquiring minds want to know.

He's such a little, self-righteous punk. Thus making a good JW.
He asks that the music be devoid of bad lyrics, but doesn't say that he left the club. In other words the girls stripped and danced and Prince stayed to oogle.
I say he's elder material.

Does Prince's ignorance never stop? Get on the net and look up the Birmingham System and Durom (Zimmer) prosthetics, all performed in a much less intrusive way with limited blood loss.
Ask Floyd Landis.
Then again, let him remain stupid, he's such a good Witness as such.

I agree a that Prince is hypocritical. But sometimes I feel sorry for how confused he must be. I read he had made a promise to a dying relative (mother/grandmother?) that he would become a witness. And his son dying must have affected him too. He seems to have some need for answers, but certainly cannot fit into the witness lifestyle.
Why would he even be in a strip club is the big question. I think any other witness that did some of the things he has as a witness would be disfewllowshipped. Could it be he has MONEY to contribute. I hope he realizes that the witnesses can never fullfill his spiritual need.

Wow. Prince refuses to sing his songs, I'm crushed. This might be the first time in my entire life that I don't dislike the consequences of someone being a witness
You think next they'll get Mel Gibson to stop making movies and Britney Spears to stop having children and Tom Cruise from doing anything at all?
The watchtower should be proud of their pint-sized mascott. Preaching the good news of the kingdom message in a truly Godly sanctuary.

Not as surprising as it may seem, lovely Katie. I lived in Nevada when I was 17, and got one of the biggest shocks of my life when we went to the Whorehousesoutside of Carson city to leave the WT and Awake, as the hookers often also live there, So they just HAVE to go leave the mags at the cathouses. His public statements and behavior are beginning to make JWs look sillier and sillier. He should realize that he is not helping the cause. Tom Cruise may have been able to draw many people into Scientology; but Prince is not going to have similar success with the Witnesses.
I suspect that when the new Kingdom News campaign gets under way, Prince is going to try to stick some of those tracts in the stripper's G-strings.

Re poor little tiny elfin Prince: He's completely screwed up. I'm sure he was screwed up before he made a deathed vow to become a dub and now he's really twisted. What upstanding, Jehover-worshipping, holy dub even contemplates entering a strip club in the first place (unless they want to see women strip and then they'd be in disguise or at least wouldn't call attention to themselves)? Why would anyone go someplace where they had to ask the people working there to stop doing their job? He wants to continue living his life as he always has, going to the places he's used to frequenting, while expecting everybody else to make changes to suit his new conscience. Its a novelty for now and kind of amusing but if he keeps it up these clubs are going to start requesting he take his entourage someplace else...like Dairy Queen.

Hey guys, check it out. Prince was partying that night at "Xenii Nightclub" according to the article. From what I found, xenii is not a strip club, or even a night club but it's a private society. Unless there is a nightclub that goes by the same name.
