Mom: Caleb, I want to talk to you.
Caleb: Yes Mom?
Mom: I have been very patient with you, with this practicing to dig graves in the garden, but it has to stop.
Caleb: Why Mom?
Mom: Because everyone is talking. It is upsetting everyone. Sophia can’t sleep at night. She just keeps having nightmares of the world covered with dead bodies. Rotting, stinking dead bodies. And your Dad is getting headaches from all this digging. I don’t know what you said to him, but for some reason he thinks he has to be out in the garden with you and help you dig practice graves. It’s just getting crazy.
Caleb: I don’t understand you Mom?
Mom: What do you mean you don’t understand me?
Caleb: Well, you used to be so good in the truth.
Mom: Hunnhh?
Caleb: Yes, you used to be so good. You always told us to Listen – Obey – and be Blessed. Didn’t you?
Mom: Yes, but…
Caleb: And you even explained to me that I couldn’t have that Satanic Sparlock toy. That’s why I threw it into the garbage can. Remember?
Mom: Yes, but…
Caleb: Now you’re telling me that I should ignore what the Governing Body had told us about our first important job in the new system.
Mom: What job?
Caleb: You know, burying the dead bodies.
Mom: But they never said that was our first important job in the new system.
Caleb: No, no Mom. Just think for a minute. Try to follow me on this one. Br. Losch gave a talk and said that ‘perhaps’ we would be burying the dead bodies of all the ones that die at Armaggedon. Are we going to be building houses first, with all the dead bodies laying around? Now that would be really crazy. So logically, the first job we will have is burying the dead bodies.
Mom: That’s right, he said ‘perhaps’. Not ‘we will’ but ‘perhaps’ we will. You understand that Caleb, don’t you? He’s only saying ‘maybe’ we will have to bury the bodies.
Caleb: That’s exactly right Mom. And we all know that when the Governing Body says something like that, you know, ‘perhaps’ , ‘maybe’, ‘it would be reasonable’ , ‘ it would seem’, that it is just their way of telling us what we should believe. It may seem a bit strange, but that’s the way they talk…
Mom: Well I don’t think that…
Caleb: … and that is why I am starting to worry about you Mom.
Mom: What? Why?
Caleb: Well, you are telling me to stop preparing for something that the Governing Body has told us we will be doing in the new system. Now Mom, who wants you to tell me to stop digging graves? Satan or Jehovah?
Mom: Satan?
Caleb: Yes Mom, that’s right. Do you think Jehovah will be sad if you tell me something Satan wants you to say?
Mom: Yes?
Caleb: Yes, Mom, yes. That’s exactly what Satan wants you to say, and if you say it you will make Jehovah sad. You don’t want to make Jehovah sad, do you Mom?
Mom: No.
Caleb: I don’t want you to make Jehovah sad either.
Mom: So what should I do?
Caleb: Well, Dad and me are going out to practice digging some more graves. Why don’t you make us some nice glasses of Kool-Aid?
Mom: Okay.

Excuse me, what does God need with a starship?
What does Jehovah need with gravediggers though? Why wouldn't he just make them disappear, or bury them himself? Why would he traumatize the faithful ones by forcing them to bury those he murdered?

Mom: Well why not dig smaller graves, Caleb? All these full-size ones are taking over my flower beds and borders.
Caleb: Now, Mom! We've got to be hole-souled - see what I did with the words whole and hole Mom? See, We are Jehovah's happy people! See, the "W" is silent?
Dad: (He is a career Min Serv. - you can tell by his knuckles dragging the floor) Good one Caleb! (Does a high five)
Caleb: Actually Dad we could dig some smaller ones, after all we need to bury the babies and toddlers too don't we?

So said the CO last night.
Apparently a JW was on a flight and just happend to sit next to some big wig from Pixar and when the man from Pixar heard that he was a JW the Pixar man just gushed over what great work that the Watchtower has done in producing the Caleb video's. He siad he only wished Pixar could do such great work. The CO said we are able to do it because we have free labor and Jehovah behind us.
My husband stayed home from the meeting but wanted to tie in by phone and that is what the CO said in his talk.
The CO also talked about all the changes that have happened in the last ten years and how if some of the friends did not like it they needed and to quote him "they just needed to get over it" these changes are going to happned period. Also some have been saying that some of the changes were to save money and that is not the case in the least.
It just made me sick to listen to and I know there are those of you who are going to put me down for listening to the meeting so bring it on and slam me for it. I listened and that is that. I am kind of stuck in the middle with my husband still believing and I want to know what is happening because it still affects me.
OK so now that, that is said, it just made me sick and my head hurts to know that everyone at the meeting was commenting saying how great the changes were and how happy they are for Jehovah speading up the work. The JW's who are in do not seem to be able to see the Wizard behind the curtain. And these are younger ones in the late 20's and 30's.
I am just speachless and I just do not get how anyone can fall for all of this.
LITS
Also for those who do not know Pixar is the one who made such movies as Toy story 1 and 2, Finding Nemo, Mosters Inc, UP, Cars, etc but they are jealous of the Cabeb video. Yeh right!

I thought this was a joke when I clicked on it...the fact that a DUB (a CO for that matter) even uttered these words is so unbelievably ridiculous. That's like saying that Robert DeNiro was a little jealous of the lead actor in the Drama this years. lol.
LITS, no worries...I can't believe you would worry about getting slammed for listening to a meeting. I am in the same boat as you! We all just do what we can. Thank you for posting this, it's always humerous to see just how delusional some JDUBS are.

I'm not going to slam you. I like to keep up, too. I went to a part of the convention.
I'd love to know whether the Pixar incident really happened at all and if it did, how the conversation really went. JW stories like this one get exaggerated and embellished, that is, if the events described even happened at all. I'm not really up on Pixar stuff or the technology used, but I saw the Caleb video and was not impressed in the least with the animation. Why would Pixar be? To me, it seems that the technology is such that many could produce such work if they had the necessary tools (hardware? software?).

The CO also talked about all the changes that have happened in the last ten years and how if some of the friends did not like it they needed and to quote him "they just needed to get over it" these changes are going to happned period. Also some have been saying that some of the changes were to save money and that is not the case in the least.
The org and its reps always speak in such a manner when they have captive audiences who can't question or disagree with them. Why don't they ever have open forums (or "fora") that allow for questions and disagreement? That hotshot CO is a tough talker when he's up on that stage and knows nobody can challenge him. How would he and the org in general and the other hotshots fare if they were subjected to an honest questioning/challenging session with some of us on this site or if even they allowed JWs to openly express their thoughts, feelings, and doubts?

Mcconaughey......Just observation and deduction. I see a propensity for obesity. Poverty. A yen for fairy tales. Folks putting what few bucks theyt have into a little wicker basket being passed around. I think it is safe to say nobody here's going to be splitting the atom.

@ Magnum: I'd love to know whether the Pixar incident really happened at all and if it did, how the conversation really went.
.
The CO happened to be in the same airport as a guy from Pixar. As they sat in the waiting area, here's what happened:
CO: "Hi. I'm a Jehovah's Witness. You probably didn't recognize me without my literature trolley parked 30 feet away while I sip a Grande Starbucks Frappuccino. But I do have a "JW. Org" lapel pin. See."
Pixar Guy: "Yeah, I've heard of JWs. One of the janitors in the home office is one of you."
CO: "Has he shown you our latest animated feature that we take full credit for producing but we actually hired it out to a worldly firm?"
Pixar Guy: "Yes, I've seen it. You get what you pay for and JWs work for free, right?"
CO: "True."
Pixar Guy: "At Pixar, we know in order to get the best, you must hire the best, and that means paying our people big bucks. I'm glad that we at Pixar do not have to rely on slave labor to do what we do. Actually paying people makes all the difference in the world."
CO: "Care for a sip of my Frappuccino?"

Right. And Celine Dion was recorded singing "Kingdumb Maladies" with George Benson because JW music is so wonderful.
This is yet another JW urban legend.
When I was in beth-hell, there was a story spreading about a sister placing the Knowledge book with Pres. Clinton and he later told a reporter that he'd recently read an interesting book... blah, blah supposedly he read an entire JW publication. The Writing Department went to work tracking down the story to see about publishing it. When they tracked down this sister that had told the story at a Circus Assembly (somewhere in Idaho or something) and started asking questions, she broke down in tears and admitted it was all a lie.

And she said her organization is looking very closely at the No masturbation Video for deaf people, They espcially like the ones on Youtube that are all insinck with the timming of the melody(It was really really hot), and she could not stop talking about that very cute hispanic young brother was so hot in his signing techniques and thought he should have won 1st prize in the compatition in his most inventive way of getting his point across. She really like the part where the young bro was telling all deaf people that Jehovah is watching so you better stop!.

Even if the quote were included in one of their publications, I'd still doubt it. Sometimes, these people take something that has a skerrick of truth in it - e.g., "Oh what good videos you guys make!" - and through repetition it turns into something radically different - and invariably gushing and over the top.
Besides, gushing about developments in the organization is something that has happened for decades. It happened in Rutherford's day - and who can forget those photos of wide, smiling eyes thrusting "new releases" at the cameras in the 1950s - or the ecstasy that accompanied the release of the "blue bombshell" in 1967? 1968? (remember the confident nonsense that was spewed that the "Truth" book would be the last one ever needed for bringing people into the organization? Where is the "Truth" book now? Gathering dust with its "predictions" about the timing of the end removed).
This is simply more of the same. It is nothing new. The disappointment for you - with your husband still as vulnerable to getting caught up in the delirium - is that people with active brain cells could keep doing this after this long. It is incredible isn't it? Yet, your mistake is to credit them with active brain cells. You may need to revise your hypothesis about their brain capacity - honestly!

I had to watch some if these Caleb videos to see what all the animation bigwigs were frothy about. Wow, really amateur.
I have experience of 3D modelling at work, mainly scientific, but I do a bit of character stuff as a hobby. I'm not amazing at it but I couldn't do much worse than the JW videos. The rigging and weighting of the characters and their ponderous movements at certain times were quite poor. Some sections were animated ok, like run sequences and mouth movements. They've obviously bought predesigned scripts for some parts, but they then look out of place next to the poorly animated parts especially facial expressions and general body movement. Also no effort has been made with cloth or hair simulation ir any physics that I've seen so far. It's not even that hard with the right software, you just need enough cpu power to compute it.
I will eat all my shoes, 4 pairs in all, and post the video on youtube if an employee of Pixar passed any positive comment on the Caleb videos.

Our good friend Palimpsest over at JWR has a Pixar contact. She emailed him, this was his response:

"hadn't heard of it. passed it around my pod and no one recognized it. we follow animation close obviously so its not anything major. an exec would only know it if it had been in festivals or came through screening here.
the production is a fair amateur effort. whoever made it is a little trained but not experienced. its basic and wouldn't win any awards in a student show. but its better than alot of the shorts I've seen. still no way an exec said that. the message is as oppoiste of what we say in our films as it gets ."

It was urban legends like these being repeated among JWs that made me realize that people are inherently gullible with regards to others in their "in group" and that Witnesses are no different. That started me wondering if I should be believing what I'd been taught from infancy just because the people around me believed it.

@Magwich:
That was such a stunning episode; Rusty (McConaughey's character) goes on to say that some consider religion to be a language virus.
The writing on that show was great; such a bleak portrayal.
Early on it seemed like Rusty's character was only about the bleakness; by the end I saw his character as being affected by the death of his daughter.

There was this DO on a flight from Virginia Beach to Belize that sat next to the CEO of a local company that specializes in manufacturing civilian and military-grade bomb shelters; when he witnessed the guy, he told him he was blown away by the JW's because, back in the 1940's his company had learned about the bomb shelter that the society had bult in Beth-Shan, and they were so impressed that they licenced the design from the WTS, signed by Rutherford himself, and that is still the state-of-the-art technology they're using to this day to build nuclear-proof bomb shelters.

...... see how long it will take until this TRUE story makes into a Regional Convention or a CO talk.

Thanks for the laugh, LITS.
The CO probably believes the total BS story as it was passed on.
I have found many JW stories from the platform that were stolen from stories originally found in other religions. It never ceases to amaze me how I just accepted that Watchtower was just so wonderful.
We have armed border patrols in war zones that are supposed to prevent JW literature from getting in to their country basically having Holy Spirit turn their eyes for a moment. You might as well end stories like that with "These aren't the droids we're looking for." You have trucks loaded with food breaking down right at a quickbuild in a poor country, so they give/sell at reduced price to the workers right there.
I will make up my own story: SO the Pope is sitting next to a GB member on a plane (first class all the way) and really admires the Watchtower's way of sweeping the pedophile issue under the rug so much better than the Catholic Church. The Pope asks if he can send some cardinals to learn the Watchtower secrets on this. The GB member says "Sure" and 6 months later, there are 10 cardinals turning in their resignations and preparing for baptism at the Detroit International Convention of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Polish that up and make it less specific. You got yourself another great urban legend.

I can just see it now, the brother that worked on these videos hears about the Pixar urban legend. So he decides to visit Pixar and brings along some of his WT work to show those that do the hirring to see if he can land a job, which in turn makes him look like a fool for beleiving the JW bull shit mill.

On the way out I loved your urban legend of the Pope being jealous of how the GB have been able to sweep the pedophiles under the rug. That is a story I would have way more of a chance of believing.

Among the 250+ awards won by Pixar are Grammy's, Golden globes, Acadamy awards, BAFTA's, and seven Oscars.
I guess WT have done much better.

This is one of the best threads ever!
yep...next Pixar will be begging the GB to allow them to buy the rights to Caleb, and will all come into the truth! Hahaha
Typical witnesses will just eat up this crap!
Witnesses are actually caught in a trap. They are continually fed these elaborate stories and supposed accounts of "1 magazine found in a busstop that then brings 17 people into the truth" etc...
So they then feel compelled to furnish similar stories themselves!
We have a sister in our cong who is quite strange...and I have been witnessing with her. She always gives supposed experiences of "placing literature and people loving it etc"
But when I worked with her once, she literally pushed a crumpled mag into the hand of a guy who was SO not interested and was actually walking away from here saying 'no thankyou'. The next day at the meeting, she gave an experience in her answer about a "guy who was so keen to learn about Jehovah that he grabbed the magazine, and begged her to come back and teach his whole family more about 'the truth'" I sat there literally laughing out loud!
So my point is, the average witness has been indoctrinated by these sort of embellished fabricated stories for years!
It's so very sad.......it's all they have.....

That really is worthy of snopes urban legands.. The WTS is full of them, repeated by irresponsible men in positions of power, to be swalloed by the flock. Just like " The world is so respectful of our expert knowledge on blood that the Bethel reqularly gets requests from surgeons asking our advice on the subject" .....Yes right ! I don't think I believe that either.
Sadly this Organisation tells its readers to test and check claims that are made: (except when they make the claim)
Aw 1990 5/22 p14

An ancient proverb says: “Anyone inexperienced puts faith in every word, but the shrewd one considers his steps.” (Proverbs 14:15) So don’t fall for fallacies. Learn to differentiate between legitimate attacks on what is said and cheap attacks on personalities. Don’t be fooled by invalid appeals to “authority,” urgings to ‘join the crowd’, either/or reasoning, or gross oversimplifications—especially when something as vital as religious truth is involved. Check all the facts, or as the Bible puts it, “make sure of all things.”

I don't want to believe this, because it's so ridiculous, but then again, I remember at a District Convention where a speaker said "Spielberg is making a major movie about Jehovah's Witnesses in concentration camps" some time after Schindler's List, so who knows what idiocy they state from the platform.

As many times as I've watched 'Monsters University', I can tell you that whoever made the Caleb/Sophia videos would probably not be fit to carry the mail of the kinds of talented folks working at Pixar. But hey, who knows? Maybe Caleb will be bought and it'll be all Caleb Meets the Avengers or something.

I have found many JW stories from the platform that were stolen from stories originally found in other religions. It never ceases to amaze me how I just accepted that Watchtower was just so wonderful.
There was a quite popular illustration in my area used to explain why it was difficult keeping your children "in the truth." A brother once mentioned it had originated from a CO's talk. Anyhow, the illustration was that a rock could be in a river for thousands of years, but if you cracked it open it was dry. Similarly, a child may have been raised in "the truth" but he/she may not have absorbed it.
Years after I had stopped going to meetings I watched Godfather III for the first time and lo and behold there was a scene featuring the future Pope conveying that same illustration to Michael Corleone almost word for word. Instead of "the truth" he used "christianity." Somehow an illustration from a rated-R movie made it's way onto the platforms of many a kingdom hall.

I wonder if this Pixar big wig would be gushing all over about the Caleb animations if he knew that Caleb's mom told him to KILL SPARLOCK.
I hope Sparlock got away and we see him again. Caleb is just a little kid and has to do what he's told.

Hold Me-Thrill Me

Hold Me-Thrill Me 10 months ago

I was very tired today, still am. Age is getting to me. Well, when I'm tired I spend my time watching whatever I find interesting on the net, news etc. Then in some self-hate moment I went back to JW Broadcasting and watched a few videos there. I say self-hate because it hurts, sometimes it hurts too much.
At any rate, afterwards I'm thinking about the video you all were talking about here the one which will be shown at the Regional Convention where a child puts money into the contribution box rather than buy an ice cream with it. I started giving thought to that and could not stop thinking about it and then it hit me.
That video will be shown to millions of parents around the world. Millions of parents with millions of small children and grandchildren. What will the parents and children want to do after watching that video. It would be perfectly natural for children who have already come to love Caleb and Sophia, to want to put something in box in imitation of them. And the parents and grandparents will naturally feel pride, and be encouraged by the child, to give them a dollar or a coin to put in the box. In fact why not put in a dollar or coin every day of the Convention?
How much money even in coins or single dollars will have then be put in the contribution boxes by millions of children wanting to imitate Sophia? And this at conventions all around the world.
So my thinking kept on. Could it be that's why this video's release was kept for the Conventions around the world and was not first released on the JW dot org site? Could this actually be the plan? To get millions of children to put money in the boxes at the Conventions around the world? Can they really be that calculating, that cold, that evil?
Can this be true?
As I said I'm very tired. Not just physically but emotionally too. I'm ready to take a good look at my life and my religion. I'm ready to let the rain sink in. Ready to allow all this really soak in my bones and then see how it feels. Do I stay? Stay in my religion? Do I run for the door? Do I have the energy to continue to try and help the few I can at the KH or do I run away in horror at what is going on? They will see it in my face at the next meeting. I know it.
I have truly enjoyed my time here. I hope I've not hurt anyone's feelings or given cause for complaint if so I sincerely apologize. We may never meet but I sure hope you all will be happy and satisfied in this life and though many here do not believe I do hope to have a laugh and glass of wine with all here in the next life.
I'm not saying goodbye, I'm just not sure where I go from here and what I will do. I love my books perhaps I'll spend time getting to know them again or anew.
With much love and respect to all here,
Frank

I recoil in disgust too Frank every time I watch that video. It truly is disgusting. I know and the GB know as well how many children will see this video and give up their ice cream money. It's not enough they have to deprive the children of Christmas, birthday celebrations and normal childhoods but they take the money that these children would waste on a simple childhood pleasure of ice cream and no doubt use it to defend against the likes of Candace Conti. If their not evil I don't know who is.

While it is the plan to get every last cent from every child, things like this tend to be quickly forgotten by the sheeple. That's been my experience in 3 different congregations. You might be able to muster some high contributions a few months, but it would invariably drop off. But I've never been in a "rich congregation". Most of the dubs I knew made very little money and were already spending more than they were making. Few of the JW kids had any kind of part time jobs to make their own money because the cult demanded their evenings and weekends when most kids I grew up with were picking up some work.

I agree with Billy, the kids will remember the video for about 1 day and then life will get back to normal and their interest will shift to Jurassic World, the Ant Man, Minions, and all the other movies that will come out in the summer. And when they go to the movies, they will be thinking butter popcorn and not contributions at the Kingdom Hall. So I wouldn't get to worked up for it. Maybe what would help you more not to get so upset to stay away from the JW Broadcast and their videos and see something more uplifting.

I can see the parents of these kids encouraging their little darlings to mimic Sophia , giving them the money to drop in the contribution box , and when the kid asks for an ice cream the parent will remind them they gave their money to the K.H. contribution box.
Which one do you think will wake up first ? the parent or the kid.?
The parent is putting in extra dollars for their kids as well as their own contributions
The kids are now missing out on sweets and ice creams because they gave their pocket money to the K.H.

The GB really has reached the nadir in scum-bucketness, saying a little child should donate to them instead of buying an ice-cream.
Is there any more vile a religion except for the religious extremists in ISIS (no sports, no fun) for treating children so horribly than the JW's?
No birthdays, Easter, Christmas (accordingly viewed as a weirdo by schoolmates), no after-school sports, children forced to sit through dull, boring long meetings twice a week with no separate programme for the little ones like other churches do, babies and children to die rather than get an emergency life-saving blood transfusion, a paedophile in every congregation who is almost impossible to kick-out, must go door-knocking as a child magazine seller.....
You can tell the morality of any society or religion by how well it treats it's children, and JW's scrape the bottom of the barrel.
The GB make me puke!

I know, right? Short attention spans, but think of this. That video is going to be seen over and over by kids who'll be babysat with that video and others like it. They'll identify closely with Caleb and Sophia. Maybe the WT is trying to curb infant obesity. "Don't eat fatty icecream, give us your money instead, you'll get that dopamine release reward from doing as you've been brainwashed, child!" Bunch of greedy money grabbin GB now turned into drug pushers of feel good brain chemicals!
The craziness over the movie Frozen is ample proof. Four year olds singing along with Anna! Having the time of their lives. But, they're not being asked to give up their icecream money to a Real Estate Development and Publishing Empire masking as a religion.
When their minds are the most pliable and the rate of growth is the highest in brain development. Habits and future mind-sets are formed. This Contributions & No Icecream video is nothing short of blatant, infant brainwashing.

Hi Frank,
i wrote a long post earlier on - from my iphone, I then deleted as I thought I had submitted post to wrong topic / thread - darn  such are the perils of iPhones and those swiping screens!
Hey, take care dear man.
The gist of my original post was to say "1000 years are as 1 day and 1 day is as 1000 years" - so true. What is time? Really?
It's a journey. Keep on your course, keep true to what "adds up" - if we have been mislead, we won't have been the first.....at some point, we have to be true to God and not to men.
The organisation of "Jehovahs Witnesses" have one particularly major error - they claim exclusivity - and really, on the basis of what?
It's going to be OK - it really is.
You will feel hurt, exhausted and at times, broken perhaps with all this unravelling of what you believed to be true.
Take your time, please. 1000 years is as one day, one day is as 1000 years.
I don't believe "in God" anymore than I believe in my heartbeat.
There is something far greater than my puny belief going on here...
It's beyond believing, it's far more than that - this universe is not dependant on poorly written magazines and silly cartoons, terrible illustrations that do not dwell on what is loveable, chaste and all things that desire good.
When you repair, keep your heart towards being the hands and feet of a servant for the universe. The man Jesus, whether one believes he came from "above" or a different dimension, or was just a man like all of us - he has captured the hearts and attention of the world since his life course began - like no other.
For a reason.
Trust.

So my thinking kept on. Could it be that's why this video's release was kept for the Conventions around the world and was not first released on the JW dot org site? Could this actually be the plan? To get millions of children to put money in the boxes at the Conventions around the world? Can they really be that calculating, that cold, that evil?

Frank,
Good luck on your sojourn. Exiting a high control group that you've been a part of for decades is difficult. It hurts like hell. And then you try to pick up the pieces, evaluate yourself and figure out what to do with all that you know, what you believe, what is true . .
We have been there. We understand. Please continue to contribute to this site.

Frank I hope you stick around to share your journey, debate with affection, disagree, grow and learn. I am fairly old (7th decade of life) and still get stuff wrong, still learning.
Rest now................... don't do anything harmful to yourself. When you try to re think everything you have ever believed in it's usually too much to get through at one time.
Thank you for your passionate take on the kids contributing at the assemblies I had not made that connection.......excellent point of view.

My sincere and deep appreciation to all who commented on this thread. I do not like where I am at the moment but hey one is never too old to learn and if need be change. I hope.

I made a decision this afternoon which happened to be one of the best afternoons I've had in a long time. My concern right now is for those among my generation the over 70 year olds who may be lurking here. We are the ones who remember and who in my opinion may be having a rather hard time because so little time is left for us to redirect or to truly decide what is best for ourselves and those we love.
I'm going to post something to my generation.
How I do love all those here who have shown love and kindness to those like me when we did not always agree or were a bit over the top in a religious sense.
Love and respect to all,
Frank

Frank, I can relate to your opening post. I and my wife are still in shock over how we now feel about the religion we once loved and gave our all for. I remember looking forward with great anticipation to district conventions, thinking each year we might be getting exciting new info and that each one might be the last. Wow - things really have changed!
I'm in the fifty-something group, and I remember the old days - the Franz/Knorr days - the deeper days - the exciting days - etc. But I know you remember those times better than I do. Please stay around here. I am extremely interested in the perspective, experience, and knowledge of your generation. We need you.

Most of us stay in our comfort zones. We are ill-equipped/fearful to do otherwise. We give up on being of benefit to others outside of our immediate friends/families, instead of teaching our families to grow up strong and to show genuine love to outsiders.
It becomes remarkable to us when we see three young men overcome a terrorist on a train in France. We call them heroes and set them up as examples for others to follow But listening to them tell it, they say it comes from their christian upbringing. Their hearts were courageous in time of need while others fled the scene and ran away. I think those taught by WT would run away. I think the problem is systemic. I see the GB shirk Christian duties to reach out to those in trouble, and by example, teach their followers to do the same...instead they teach to "wait on Jehovah" and give us your ice cream. The 3 terrorist-stoppers were a different type of Christian.
I think this is what JC looks at when judging us individually.

Rebranding of the Watchtower to JW.org - how long in the works?

The transformation from Watchtower to JW.org is nothing short of remarkable.
Animated cartoons (Caleb and Sophia), the new JW.org Slogan, International Convention websites (featuring previously unthinkable entertainment in the Kingdom Hall) - how long do you think this has been in the works for?

I feel very uneasy about what is happening - it's so sudden, seems like it all happened within the space of a year.
I sense some intelligence about all this, as if it has been some carefully orchestated performance - to dazzle and distract.
The Kingdom Ministry of 1999 was totally against the Internet and now they seem to embrace it along with tablets and smartphones.
Why the sudden change? Do you think it is anything to do with social media?
Is it to attract new recuirts? Keep existing ones? If so, then they are not really interested in "truth" but more about retaining their existing membership above all else.
Is it a case of "if you can't beat them, then join them"?

sir82
sir82 2 years ago

My guess is it is a combination of the following:
-- Succumbing to the inevitable - the internet is not going away, the only way to have any sort of influence in the modern world is to have at least some sort of web presence
-- The death of Jaracz & Barr, who were markedly older than the rest of the GB and likely more resistent to an increased web presence
-- The hiring of an outside consulting firm to give them a more modern & appealing "look"; such a consulting firm would almost assuredly recommend a strong web presence

Phizzy
Phizzy 2 years ago

I agree with all of your points sir82, but would add, they have a dire need to sucker more people in, especially in the lands that have the Internet.
This is where their main donations used to come from, they can hardly expect anything but expense from the rest of the (non-Internet) World, and yet the part of the World served by the Internet is where new converts are very few and far between, and those leaving, or no longer donating, are many.
So, the re-branding is not simply to look up to date, but has a serious marketing intention, showing that the lack of donations since 2008 particularly, has actually hit them, despite the sell off of property.
Their financial advisors have warned them that mere sell-offs of property will not forever fill the gaps in Cash-Flow.
It is always about the money . $$$ are what their motivation is in every move they make.

stuckinarut2
stuckinarut2 2 years ago

I actually think that the "steam-roller" effect has actually become bigger than they first expected!
While the website, and international conventions, live broadcast of the annual meeting etc was planned, I dont reckon that the GB even expected the hype amongst witnesses to make the p henomena so big!
Never did they plan for JW.ORG "merch" to be so widely created and distributed!
Its taken on a life all of its own........

Listener 2 years ago

What has the revamping actually achieved? It hasn't made any significant increase to their membership. I has caused an idolization of the JW org symbol and it has also saved the WTBTS heaps of money

Coded Logic
Coded Logic 2 years ago

I suppose the real question is, will they be able to keep the beast on a leash? The Kingdom Hall meetings have long needed some serrious pick up to keep the witnesses attention. If they were smart, they would start doing special schools for the young ones during the meetings and "deeper" studies for the witnesses who have been in for a long time and have heard it all before.
Unfortunetly, from what I've read of their liturature of late - it seems like they have dumbed it down even more than before I left (which I hadn't even thought possible). But who knows, with all these changes maybe the tail will start wagging the dog.

My guess is after the final old GB members past away since they're from an older generation that grew up without internet. With statistics showing growth percentage greatly declining during the 90's, must have happened in the 2000's, early to mid. Around that time I'm sure they had planned to move out of Brooklyn. As for the website could have been much later. Everyone uses the internet and it's inevitable not to. With all these "apostate" websites going around, there isn't much defense for the Watchtower so they need to counteract that issue with what they can. JW.org offers something fresh, modern, and more sleek. Plus it's more convenient for members to gain easy access to information, and that would include other people.

So last night they played the convention cartoon. There were a few laughs from the audience, overall though people seemed a little taken aback and tight lipped. Like no one gushed about it afterwards, no applause, just like it was nothing new at all.
My theory on why they did this, is that they are smart, they have realized that the adults in the org like the Caleb and Sophia cartoons as much OR MORE than the damn kids! So now they are going to appeal to their audience and make some cartoons for the adults.
I feel like the youngest ones in the hall are weirded out by it, and the oldest ones feel alienated. it's all very strange.

I just got the weirdest image in my head...
...a cheap Loony-Tunes knockoff theme playing over Caleb and Sophia's little robot friend sticking his face through a hole in the wall, and saying, "abedeea-bedea-bedeaa-that's all, brothers and sisters!"...
...then Sparlock comes out and waves his wand Tinkerbell-style, and everything disappears in a flash.

One of the most telling things in the video, that really was always talked about in the meeting part it replaced, but is more blaring in the video is that witnesses are inconsiderate assholes.
◦Reminders to tip? WHO NEEDS TO BE REMINDED????
◦Not treating the continental breakfast and ice machine as your personal food bank? No kidding you dumb hicks!
◦Don't eat too much for lunch? talking to the wrong group here...

that part of it makes me ever more embarrassed to be associated with the witnesses, that they really are known for these types of things.

That actually reminds me of an old JW urban legend that I suspect might even be true...

I once served on the planning board for our state’s Professional Photographers state convention. During one of our planning meetings it was brought up that only JW’s spent less money than photographers at conventions! Fortunate I knew I was the exception to both cases.
Oh and hint hint! If you plan on going on vacation, obtain the hotel list for the area where you want to go and go as a Witness to get those awesome rates!

All this does is further reinforce my belief that deep down inside, the WTS wants all the fakers, faders, and fence-sitters to f**k off.

On some level, it makes sense the adults would like the cartoons, too, since the leadership reduces them to childlike dependency. Perhaps that's why I still like cartoons so much myself...fascinating...but not these cartoons. How the game has changed. I mean, I know we were being spoon-fed, but this is getting a bit too far out there. I suppose I would credit them for trying to care about young people, except that 'care' means 'recruit', so...I'd really rather not.

Sorry I'm going to be the party pooper here  but I sure liked the doodles. I'm always doodling so it was a feast to my eyes.
The audience in my hall reacted stupidly. I was praying and hoping that they wouldn't applaud. But a few did; I'd say 10 persons in about 50. Not the frantic ecstatic applause though, a very cold one which lasted for half a second.
The general laughter were forthcoming throughout the show though.

Personally, I like RSA style animation as a way of teaching.

There are some pretty amazing educational videos that use this technique (see below).
My gripe is not about the form or the format of the message, it's with the content and the manner of the message.
The WTBTS leadership treats its members like children that need to be told how to behave in public.
Let's review: It's a cult!

Billy the Ex-Bethelite
Billy the Ex-Bethelite 10 months ago

the leadership reduces them to childlike dependency

The WTBTS leadership treats its members like children that need to be told how to behave in public.
Let's review: It's a cult!

It is one of the tactics of cults to make their followers childlike and dependent. Most of their published material is dumbed down, written at about a third grade level, but intended for adults. And it's often in a condescending voice telling the reader what to think, what to feel, and using lots of fallacies as though they're valid teaching. I suspect that the "simplified study edition" is just a smokescreen to make the regular edition seem "deeper and smarter". In reality, they only seem to switch the wording and vocabulary such that the two editions should really be differentiated as "dumb" and "dumber".
So I guess it shouldn't be a surprised that they're using cartoons like this for teaching adults. Rather than help these people become more responsible adults, indoctrinate them to be obedient children.

The WTBTS leadership treats its members like children that need to be told how to behave in public.
Anytime that "rules of behavior" are put in place, a person knows that those 'rules' have already been broken.
It is why the 'rules' are being reinforced - because complaints have been made. Every rule that the WTS is emphasizing in their cartoon is the result of complaints received.
And yes, like other posters have mentioned, the cartoon has a '50s feel and look to them. Which goes right along with the resurrection of old marketing techniques that were successful back in the 30s and 40s and 50s. Today's ipads are yesterday's phonographs and today's jw..org broadcasts are yesterday's JW radio broadcasts. Today's Caleb and Sophie are yesterday's "Children of the King."
Wash, rinse, and repeat.

"Cult-like indeed! No normal person would sit through a presentation that treats them like idiots.."
Looking back, it was that very feeling, that I was being treated like an idiot, that got me investigating, and eventually led me here.
I said some years ago that those who remain JW's are either idiots, or wish to remain, either way, they are idiots.*
* Idiots in the sense of Dostoevsky's Novel, "The Idiot", i.e not really suited for this World, better off in a Sanitorium.

It went over surprisingly well at my hall. (But we are mid-westerners after all!)  Nobody, that I know of, seemed embarrassed of it, or even offended by it. But now that I think of it... it IS really condescending! Teaching adults with cartoons? Really Watchtower?
I do wonder what is going through the minds of the older ones who survived the Fred Franz era as these videos and cartoons are being shown in the Kingdom Halls... hmmm.... In my old Hall, there are even ones who came into the truth during the Rutherford days...
This isn't your grandpa's religion!

Okay, finally got around to watching this video. The intended audience is clearly adults, right? I mean, right? It's a clever way to get the information across without boring people to death with an entire Service Meeting part on it, so I'll credit them on that. (They'll still have that boring Service Meeting part, I'm sure.)
But the implications here--so they expect JWs to dress as if they're literally at the convention the entire time?? Ha ha! I never did that. It's freaking a hundred degrees outside and I'm going to sit around in my dress clothes all night after I sat around in them all day? HA HA HA HA HA! Go flock yourself. You have no Biblical basis for those orders, so I felt perfectly free to ignore them even as a JW. Oh, and remember the day's text this week about God being impartial and seeing more than the outward appearance? So much for that!
Still trying to figure out who would want to be waiting outside the convention at 7:50 a.m. After driving half the day to get there, I'd be lucky to wake up before 7, much less be there before 8.
Sadly, I actually did enjoy the program when I believed in it--though I found certain things they said to be a bit extreme--but the process of getting there made the whole thing a pain in the behind. I was always too tired to enjoy it anyway. I did occasionally notice when they cut and paste whole paragraphs straight from Watchtower articles. Why not just reread the old magazines and save your money?
Well, thanks for sharing it. It's nothing worth commenting much on, the cartoon, I mean. I actually think it's better than how they usually present this same information every flocking year.

Normally, I'd just try to get there about a half hour before it started. Only a couple of conventions did I have to get there really early before the doors officially opened because I was an attendant or sound duty. It was weird that there were maybe a couple of hundred that were lined up before the doors were opened. Maybe a handful were nutty enough to run and get into shoving matches to get a particular front aisle seat or something. And some of them totally freaked out because they saw that some attendants and others in departments that had to be there early had already saved some seats for their families.

What does that really mean anyway? I used to think (having been D myself, when younger) that it was a loving arrangement set up by a loving God to keep the congregation clean, & to give the unrepentant wrong doer time out to think about what they had done. When ready they could come back, apologize & all is forgiven. What a first class clown I was.
Now I know different, it is a code word that lets all other members of the congregation now know that it is open season & that person is fair game for them to hunt down & terrorize. And that is exactly what they do, take work away from these ones, treat their family badly, hope & pray that their entire life will fall apart. Want an example?
I befriended a sister after she was reinstated, her husband (JW) was/is an ass so they separated. She met another bro, shagged both got D'd. Now she had to keep looking after her disabled mum cause lets face it no-one else was going to. When she took her out JW's not only shunned the D'd sister but also the bapped mother. Go figure, the woman was in a wheel chair paralysed. This sisters 2 little kids went to a small school that was made up mainly of JW kids, a sister, wrote a letter to the now D'd sister telling her that all the mothers had got together & decided that if she was ever late picking her kids up they would leave them on the side of the road. & that is exactly what they did, they drove off & left 2 primary school kids 6,8yrs alone on a quiet lane. Now I reported this to an elder, that the sister who wrote that letter is a psychotic bitch, guess what, she goes to the meeting & on the mino so she can abuse who the f...k she wants.
Loving arrangement my arse. The WTBTS has basically given full permission for people to openly abuse their fellow bro's & sisters. The BASTARDS.

This "loving" provision is anything but loving or merciful. I knew a disfellowshipped sister who called to see if I could pick up her kids from school and look after them for a couple of hours after she got caught up in car accident which closed the whole highway. It wasn't a problem for me to do this as I was there anyway and the fact that I never agreed with the shunning policy. Anyway, another Sister see's me walking back with the disfellowshipped sisters kids and counsels me on not even "saying Hello to a disfellowshipped one, never mind doing them favours and how it would be better if this one was to learn a lesson of how hard the real world is". I explained the kids were innocent and my conscience would be scarred if I held the sins of their Mother against them.

Obviously (TM), you don't share Jehovah's thinking on these matters.
Ex. 20:5 ~ "I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.”
Of course, that's unless you prefer to read Ex. 18:5 ~ “The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son.”
So........I guess you have to do like the WTS/GB does and cherry pick which scripture you want to use.
I'm sure you find comfort in the fact that you did the "right" thing for those innocent kids.

My attitude towards that sister who was disfellowshipped always pricked my conscience. She was my first experience of someone I know being DF'd and I regret that I didn't make more of an effort to speak to her - I can only imagine how lonely and isolated she must have been as a single Mother. Our only communication was by text and a couple of awkward calls. I did look after her kids on a few occasions after she was DF'd, but she would wait in the car when she came to pick them up and I was just so unsure of what to do. I struggled with not wanting to stumble her as at the time I was sure that I was wrong in my views of DF'ing - that perhaps I wasn't spiritually mature enough to see it as loving. The sisters that studied with me tried hard to convince me that it was a loving provision, yet, I allowed my instincts to be quashed when it is so blatantly wrong. I did recently contact her to apologize. She is planning on returning. I didn't have the courage to tell her that I knew the TATT.

I honestly found that reinstated JWs were often much nicer people (than the oh-so-holy movers and shakers in the congrgation)... I often made a point of being friends with them specifically for that reason.

Basically what the thread title says.
Do you guys think the GB want the JW religion to fail? Of course failing in the ultimate sense is just not going to happen. No matter how bankrupt they went, there is always going to be a percentage that holds on.
But downsizing the membership? That's where i think the GB could be heading.
How they could do it is another matter entirely. With all the crazy shit that has gone down in the last 2 years you would have thought there would have been a drop in membership. But no, it's still slowly creeping up.
In order for them to seriously downsize, and be in for a big pay day from sold off KHs, they got to drop a massive bombshell soon. Maybe 1914 changing? Maybe a new end date? What else could they possibly change that hasn't been changed already?
Your thoughts?

Think it's more the byproduct of delusion than a cunning plan. They currently seem to be in the process of trying to redo Rutherford's big ideas on how to apply bible prophesy. I wonder how many still inside and believing would even be aware of what the changes mean beyond 'new light' and swallowing everything whole. My money is on them declaring Armageddon as having started in some way. Book of Revelation is due a reinterpretation from all the Rutherford-era events.
"And the first trumpet was obviously the historic opening of JW.org website. And the second trumpet was the history making first television broadcast on it."
That kind of babbling buffoonery to keep everyone involved with thinking the end is even nigh-er than before again.

agree with Mephis , whatever model or mode they find themselves in would have been from delusion and complete incompetence, since when have they done anything that smacked of logic and common sense? their business model stayed almost unchanged from Knorr's presidency in 1942 to a couple of years back when jwdotorg was formed over 70 years ago, it will cough splutter and plod along for a good few years still.

I think the 7 rock star watchtower paedophile protecting popes are such self serving, narciss...narci.....narcisi.....er..big heads, that they probably think they're doing the very thing that will keep the good (yuk), ship watchtower(tm) afloat longest.
Thank goodness that they think that way. The ship is sinking and they will blame everyone else apart from themselves.
I'm sure the brown nosers stroke the egos of the popes and the popes believe in themselves with a smug confidence akin to a serial killer. When they're surrounded by'yes men' then their egos will destroy them (hopefully).
They need a merger, perhaps with some other whacko cult to keep going.

according to jwism, god didn't cause suffering, he just allowed it.

wow, that's really, really, dumb.

to help humans out, jeehoobidoob provided the ransom.

OKAY, GAME OVER! The number one reason the New Testament amounts to bunk

for me, the dead giveaway is this.

jesus wrote nothing.. stop and think about that.. if jesus were the authentic messiah, his ministry would not simply be local.. his instructions, his mission, the details of his teachings would be too precious to risk leaving it in the hands of "men unlettered (illiterate) and ordinary (blue-collar yokels).".

jesus, were he the one and only hope of mankind, would be absolutely certain to write down with great simplicity and specificity the exact owner's manual necessary to rescue mankind.. never happened!.

years ago, i attempted to discuss this topic with jehovah's witnesses in another discussion group.

looking back on the discussion, i found that i was never able to really get to the bottom of the subject.

i've never really understood witnesses belief in the spiritual aspect of humans without some belief in a soul (or spirit).

PEACE AND SECURITY!

watchtower teaches that soon there will be a huge development that will be a sign for jehovah's witnesses!

5:3 the watchtower magazine, principle journal of jehovah's witnesses, writes.... however, just before that day of jehovah begins, world leaders will be saying “peace and security!” this may refer to one event or to a series of events.

in the 18th century the calculations of archbishop james ussher regarding the age of the earth were still accepted without question.

according to ussher god made the earth at 6pm on the evening of saturday 22nd october 4004 b.c.. this naive certainty was to become a victim of the scottish enlightenment and the brilliant mind of james hutton.

having qualified as a medical doctor in 1749 hutton returned to the family farm in berwickshire not far from where i am typing this now.
