And somehow those who actually care about the people in their parish, start / maintain food banks, etc. you know actually do the "Jesus caring for others stuff" somehow rarely "advance" in the hierarchy.
Kind of like the time a friend in the military was bragging to me on his colonel. The reason the colonel did not make general was because he was too good at his job, cared for his men, and did all that rather than grift the system.

Yeah, the good, caring ministers of all religions put in lots of "invisible" time, besides weekly services!
Marshall Brain wrote, in "Why Won't God Heal Amputees?", that a church is essentially "a community of people who agree to get together regularly, help one another and share in each other's company. A church also helps people to focus on the general concept of goodness [...] it is the people who make that happen [...]
Once the imaginary being is gone, churches [can] continue to exist as communities of people who enjoy each others' company, who help one another in times of need, and who focus on goodness and good deeds for the benefit of society as a whole. What's not to like about that? By removing the imaginary being, church attendance may actually go up, because a strong church has a lot to offer."
http://www.whywontgodhealamput...
(BTW, that sort of future would be an example of the fallacy of argument from etymology, because the origin of the word "church", from "kyriakon (doma)", "Lord's (house)", will become of historical interest only!)http://www.etymonline.com/inde...

Actually, yes. Living in shame means you need to confess your sins and remain submissive to a higher power.
And tithe regularly so you have the privilege of attending that church so you can confess your sins and remain feeling guilty and feeling shamed.
Proud, civilized people don't need religion to prop themselves up, so they don't go to organized churches, and don't give money to them.
Proud gay people make churches, and to an extent religion, irrelevant. And we can't have that now.

Even some atheists promote that sort of community! For example, Sunday Fellowships, Humanistic Judaism (completely godless), Ethical Culture (godless, and calls itself a "religion")...

I had a friend in the 90s who was quite openly gay and devoutly Catholic at the same time. He came from a pretty religious family and had several nuns, priests and even a monsignor among his relatives. Actually, I knew quite a lot of gays and lesbians that were very active in their respective churches back then - it was more the norm than the exception at that time, as I recall. I had been raised Catholic too, but had stopped any involvement as soon as I was old enough to be on my own.
This friend and I got into an argument once about attending a church that was actively fighting equal rights for gays. This was around the time that John Paul II had kicked all the Dignity chapters out of all church premises and the church came out with their own astroturfed self-hating gay group, laughably called "Courage." Anyways, at the end of our up-til-then lighthearted argument, I said something like, "The real reason the church is so opposed to gay rights is because they're losing their free workforce. For centuries in Catholic countries, the only socially acceptable alternatives were either be married or join the religious orders, so all the closeted gay men and lesbians who didn't think they could pull off sham marriages went into the monasteries and convents and basically worked their whole lives for just room & board. Now that people are coming out, the monasteries and convents are emptying out and the church is losing its workforce." He got *furious* that I had said that. We didn't speak for about a week after that. I'm not sure why I said it; it just kind of came out of my mouth, but I had been thinking that for a while.
I heard about 10 years ago that the parish priest at the church he attended was busted cruising the "gay" park in that city and soliciting.

The worldwide ex-gay network, Exodus International, had to warn gays to stay away from gay conversion therapy back in 2011. The 'therapy' sometimes included watching porn with your therapist, stripping, touching genitalia, body rubs and sex. Gay conversion therapy changed its name to reparative therapy because of so many sex scandals between male therapists and male clients. During the 40 years of ex-gay ministries, there were many sex scandals, never once with someone of the opposite sex. Today, every major, decades-old ex-gay ministry has faded into history, and reparative therapy has been proven to be consumer fraud in court; the supreme court agreed. The World Psychiatric Association has called for a ban on reparative therapy around the globe.

I have said it many times, and I will say it yet again.
I am increasingly convinced that the worst part of our opposition, especially the religious opposition, comes from deeply closeted-- but not SO deeply-- homo-hating homos, who attempt to deflect attention from themselves, and manage their own unacceptable desires, by attacking gay people who wish to live their lives as decent human beings. Lonnie Latham, Ted haggard, Cardinal o'brien, and a host of others.
May they burn in the hell they believe in.

I wish I could figure out how anyone can fail to see that the most virulently homophobic ones are precisely those who are externalizing their own inability to accept their sexual orientation. And in doing so, cause tremendous harm to dozens, sometimes hundreds of others.
To put it another way: People who are accepting of and well-adjusted in their sexual orientations don't do this kind of shit to others.

By now this should be a recognized law of physics:
"Whenever I hear some bigmouth in Washington or the Christian heartland banging on about the evils of sodomy or whatever, I mentally enter his name in my notebook and contentedly set my watch. Sooner rather than later, he will be discovered down on his weary and well-worn old knees in some dreary motel or latrine, with an expired Visa card, having tried to pay well over the odds to be peed upon by some Apache transvestite."

FRANCE: Homophobic Catholic Priest Accused Of Having Sex With Young Men Who Sought Ex-Gay Torture
May 27, 2016 Religion, Scandal

Religion News Service reports:

For years, seminaries and monasteries around France sent students and novices to Monsignor Tony Anatrella, a prominent French priest and therapist who has written disparagingly of gays, if their superiors decided the young men were struggling with homosexuality.
Now Anatrella, who argues that gay men cannot be ordained as priests, is facing mounting allegations that he himself had sex with male clients under his care, a scandal that could have repercussions all the way to the Vatican, where the priest is still regularly consulted on matters of sexuality.
So far, European media have relayed accusations from as many as four men – only one of whom agreed to be identified by his real name – who say that Anatrella engaged in various sex acts with them during counseling sessions in his Paris office, with the activity allegedly occurring up until a few years ago.
“You’re not gay, you just think that you are,” Anatrella reportedly told Daniel Lamarca, who was a 23-year-old seminarian when he first went to Anatrella in 1987.
According to Dutch Catholic journalist Hendro Munsterman, who first reported Lamarca’s story in Nederlands Dagblad, Anatrella told Lamarca he could rid him of his “pseudo-homosexuality” and sought to do so by performing sex acts on Lamarca.

I kinda like him. Every now and then, he'll say something sensible. Truly. But the rest of the time it's nostalgic, like listening to the perpetually angry communist radicals I knew decades ago in college, all of whom by now are sure to be accountants or middle managers with two kids and a mortgage, planning their retirements. Heck, it's even possible Bill is so 'establishment' in real life, he's one of the 15 profiles with his name over there on LinkedIn. Clearly he's plugged into the capitalist system he professes to hate so much enough to own a computer, have access to the Internet, and have scads of free time for posting Marxist polemic as Disqus comments. That takes money, unless one is a master of the fine art of supermarket dumpster diving as my spouse and her Boston commune once were. (They sometimes managed to sell thrown-out food for a bit of cash on the side.)
I used to get irritated with Bill's constant refrain of the GOP and Dems being 100% identically evil in every way, but now it's just funny. Just like when Trump assures us he's telling the truth about...well, anything.

even I...who have no damn use for him, admire him for at least believing IN something. I think he has wasted his life, but...wasted it in ways at least more interesting than most people, and, with passion, in contrast to most who just waste it in front of the TV watching the price is right and Fox "news", alive but already dead, as they sit there waiting for the Mrs's to holler "come to the table..dinner's almost ready..I'm stirring in the cheese powder".
that said, if he stopped posting, I would not overly mourn the fact.

how HARD does one have to work to be SUCH an ass that THAT becomes possible? if you think about it...its one of the oddest things about the site! lol :)

I just like teasing the ever living shit out of him. The one thing he can't stand is to not be taken seriously...but how can I? How can anyone take him seriously? His philosophies and politics deny human nature as much as pure Communism does. He isn't stupid, just very intellectually immature.
The one redeeming aspect he has is his concern for others...as long as they are part of the faceless masses and agree with him 100 percent.

When I read BP's comments (and assume he's not just trolling), I think he might be trying to say something about the two major political parties similar to an analogy I often use regarding other issues where two opposing sides are merely opposite sides of the same coin. Certainly the two parties and their individual members often have some interests in common (e.g., support for the military-industrial complex, influential lobbyists, pandering, etc.) but BP downplays and negates the OPPOSITE SIDE component of the analogy.

Well Becca, we've been on these boards for at least a decade now and have experienced Bill's outreach and the ignominious disrespect he engenders because of his passion and relentless insistence on conspiratorial ghosts of the capitalist kind. Yet, for me I see in that passion a deep and abiding concern for justice on every front. Perhaps he is the voice of our Casandra.

lol The one and only human in the entire universe is cloned and made female. Then he fucks himself to produce the first batch of incestuous children. Who then have to fuck each other incestuously for another two generations before they don't have to resort to 1st cousins anymore.
Oh, and a few centuries later, unhappy with his universe and created Earth, God then drowns everyone except for one extended family. Who has to go back to first-cousin marrying and breeding again.
At this point, I'm pretty confident this level of genetically lethal inbreeding -- within an isolated population which obviously had no idea there were already a few million other humans around -- is where cognitively-challenged morons like Bryan Fischer must've come from.

MikeBx2 > TampaZeke  • 4 days ago

Yes, but I'm pretty sure the fact that all fetuses regardless of genetic sex start off as female is too much for Bryan to handle. That doesn't seem to play well into the notion that his God waves a magic wand and determines who's male and who's female.

2 △  ▽

Reply

Share ›

Avatar
TampaZeke > MikeBx2  • 4 days ago

It's commonly stated but inaccurate to say that all fetuses start out female. EMBRYOS start out physically sex-neutral (interestingly, at 9 weeks the genital tuber of male and female embryos looks like a penis) but by the time they become fetuses, at around 10 to 11 weeks, male and female genitals are already differentiated and distinct.
But again, that doesn't determine gender. That's something that this hateful, ignorant religious loony tune doesn't, and doesn't want to, understand.

5 △  ▽

Reply

Avatar
Librarykid > TampaZeke  • 4 days ago

And, as was mentioned above, that differentiation process does not always go perfectly. There are babies born looking female that enter puberty and suddenly have a penis. There are babies born looking male, but what looks like a penis is a large clitoris fronting a set of ovaries. Ignorance passing as religion could fill the 7 seas.

Absolutely. These asshats can't even comprehend that sex and gender are two distinct things. They certainly can't begin to consider that sex and genitalia don't always correspond or that intersex people exist. That would require them to consider that their god actually does make "mistakes" because they can't fathom that a variation from their narrowly defined "norms" could be anything other than a mistake.

I still remember my first trip to New Orleans and asking my Mom what those little cloth things were called. Pasties. At least she answered my 11 year old question.
Not to confuse them with Michigan Upper Peninsula Cornish derived pasties which are pronounced differently and cannot be worn on your nipples. Though I suppose one could if that is some fetish I yet to know about ....

Oh great now I'm going to have nightmares about pasties sploshers.
On a lighter note, one of my favorite places when I was a little kid, was called the Palomino Lounge. For absolutely no other reason than the giant fiberglass pony out in front of the bar, rearing up on it's back legs, that, and the sawdust on the floor.
Sawdust on the floor, something so completely at odds with the daily barrage of ''wash your hands make your bed don't track dirt in the house look at this mess you made do I look like your maid'' all I could do was label it 'Grown-up Stuff'. Like those rare occasions when I got to skip school and ride around with my Dad all day, and have ice cream sandwiches for lunch.
One time at the Palomino, I saw a lady dancing with a snake, and while the snake was cool, SHE HAD LITTLE HATS ON HER BOOBIES! Yes, It was ALL CAPS exciting. When I asked my Dad about the little hats, he said it was because she was shy. Being around 8 or so at the time, this struck me as a perfectly reasonable answer.

“But soon in Canada, it will be a crime to proclaim what the Bible and science teach about gender."
"Science"? Really? The religious right systematically excludes science when it conflicts with its supernatural religious fantasies.
Science? Okay then, announce on tomorrow's program you renounce Noah's Ark and creationism. Explain that you have no objective scientific evidence for your god belief. Announce that there is no reliable evidence for any number of things in the Bible.
No? Then, STFU.

It's not even what the Bible says:
"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28

If they can't get their own book of make-believe to agree with them, they're pretty doomed.
He knows science doesn't agree with him either, he just knows that his audience won't question his BS. They don't care what science says either way, it just sounds authoritative.

What's the best way to learn about classical music? I have a weird classical NPR hybrid here, but it's not something I can listen to real time. Any podcast or other resources? I bought a London symphony take but it was a boring collection of pop-classical... I'd like to learn and appreciate more.

CJ and I learned over years of following certain groups . . . especially those led by Christopher Hogwood, Trevor Pinnock, Neville Marriner, Raymond Leppard, Iona Brown. (THEY come most quickly to mind.)
Try out what you can find on YouTube by composers like JS Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann.
I've found some beautiful pieces by Telemann which were new to me, and have become acquainted with the "Swedish Handel," Johan Roman, through YouTube.

See what you can find in your library.
A lot of it is just exposing yourself to everything you can find and seeing what takes your fancy.
Above all else, it should be FUN!
:-)
(I do the best I can to expose posters to the music *I* love, and that gives me HOPE.)

If I may add, without being too pedantic, try googling what you can find on "sonata-allegro form." Its basic harmonic structure underlies much of Baroque and all of Classical and Romantic music. In its most reduced form, it even structures the blues. It's not hard to understand, simply that in such a piece harmonic groups and musical themes are set "in conflict" with each other, creating tension and drama, conflict which by the end of the piece is resolved to everyone's satisfaction. The form is essential to Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendellsohn, and composers of that era. By the end of the 19th century, less so. It's really not hard to grasp, and if you do you will understand what's "going on" in the music much more clearly, and get a lot more enjoyment out of it.

No, no, no, thank you VERY much for this post, Steve!
I've had a quick look in Wiki--thank you. It's not the first time I've come across this subject.
I've been drawn to the beauties of the minuet and fugue, in particular, for some time. They satisfy a deep-seated need in me for order-- beautiful, melodious, harmonious ORDER--JOY expressed with civilized and civilizing restraint, Apollonian joy--a world of golden cities, sparkling fountains and beautiful, flowing gardens . . . in the LIGHT.
This music guards a melancholy nature from abject DESPAIR.
It keeps hope ALIVE!!

As has been said, find yourself a good classical music radio station and listen to it regularly. May I recommend ABC Classic FM here in Oz? They broadcast concerts (both from Australia and overseas) every day, and their presenters (almost all of them trained musicians themselves) are excellent. They stream on the internet 24/7, and on their website they give full details of the pieces (and recordings) they play. ABC CLASSIC FM
Then, if a piece catches your ear, go to Youtube, where you'll almost certainly find at least one clip of it, often many, in performances ranging from "this is Dad and me rehearsing XYZ for my high school concert" to wonderful HD concert performances where you can see what the performers are doing. (There are some very good music-educational clips there too.)
But classical music does speak a different language from popular music, one in which catchy tunes are less important than how a composer shapes his music like an architect in sound; but as with any language, the only real way to learn it is by constant, relaxed listening. It takes time, but with listening will come understanding -- and with understanding will come love. Of course not every work, not every composer, not every musical style, will touch your heart; but no matter. It's your heart!

One problem with the 3rd movement of Tchaikovsky's Sixth is that too many conductors rush through it WAY too fast, robbing it of its exultant MAJESTY.
As for the finale, the 4th movement is the last word on DESPAIR.

THIS will be THE music to play for the DEATH of this REPUBLIC if Drumpf and his fellow FASCISTS in the GOP win the election this November.

Not only are they going to suppress the vote, they will STEAL it where they can.
There will be armed vigilantes attempting to intimidate voters at some polling stations, as if this were a THIRD-WORLD country!
And remember the 30 or 40 THOUSAND new voters in Georgia (?) who registered to vote in the 2014 midterms and were DENIED their right to vote because the GOP secretary of state there said he suspected "irregularities" in the registration process?! It went to court, but too late for those people to be able to vote!! Well, you KNOW they'll be up to criminal tricks like that again--you KNOW they will!
It's DISGUSTING, and NO ONE makes SURE the people's right to vote is PROTECTED in this godforsaken country!!
It's like something out of a futuristic novel that no one would believe credible in a FREE society!
But we are letting it happen HERE and NOW!!
CJ told me he saw a Politico article that said Democrats are experiencing an upswing in new registrants to vote. Great, but WILL the new registrations be RESPECTED, or will they meet with illegal interference from state-level GOP gangsters??
They will stop at NOTHING to take FULL control of the federal government!!

Their ignorance is WILLFUL.
That man is a slanderous THUG, attempting to bully and hate his way into the Oval Office.
Once there, he'd TEAR this country APART.
There cannot be a better indication of just how LOW this country has SUNK--how the media have FAILED in their DUTY to keep people informed--than the fact that that OBVIOUS con artist and unapologetic HATEMONGER has a serious CHANCE of actually winning the presidency!

Listen to the slanderous GARBAGE Trump is spewing against the Clintons with his eye on the swing states.
I've said that if McCain or Romney had been elected POTUS, I would have been VERY unhappy, but I would have accepted the election results.
I will NOT accept a slanderous GANGSTER and obvious, cynical, arrogant CON ARTIST as my President, or recognize the "authority" of a party that thinks winning a general election means it's OPEN SEASON on the Constitution and the RIGHTS of MILLIONS.

I have it playing on my stereo 24/7 and on my computer whenever it's on... and on my laptop whenever I'm traveling. And you'll *LOVE* the 'Tillicam'! It's about halfway down the right hand side of the main screen... and is a delightful way to pass the day.

You can find just about everything up on YouTube, and experiment. You can even download them as MP3's. See what you like. Start with the great classics. Beethoven 5 and 9 Symphonies, Tchaikovsky 5 (I do not like the 6th, the Pathetique), Brahms 1, Dvorak 8, Mozart 40 (find anything by Benjamin Britten as conductor on youtube), Sibelius 5. Handel Music for the Royal Fireworks. Just listen to it. After a while you will have some favorite periods and composers, and even conductors (for example, I like anything that is conducted by the great Herbert Blomstedt). Just listen and don't worry about learning -- but loving. Knowledge will emerge.

As it is the last time I tried to get them to do something on their own we got the moose. Ok, fair, I admit I left them at the remnants table, but who the Me thought they'd make something of it. Sure, whathisname made the platypus, but that's after I introduced Him to weed....

"He was conceived ... he dies?" So Fischer thinks there's actually only a male gender?
I guess he's never heard of intersexed people or people with androgen insensitivity. And he, like others of his ilk, doesn't have a clue that transwomen are women and transmen are men.
Taking it to another level, poor dude was left out when the pleasure memo circulated: Whoever you are and whatever bits you have, enjoy!

we must never abandon our Trans brothers and sisters, but,I take some comfort in the fact we are having this struggle./debate when not all that long ago, even most GLB groups, still hoping for a slightly thicker slice of the loaf...much less half the loaf, avoided defending them like the political kiss of death it would have been.
now...while far from won, we can do the RIGHT thing, and know we do it from a position of moral decency, and political Strength! my....how things HAVE changed

“But soon in Canada, it will be a crime to proclaim what the Bible and science teach about gender."
??? Is this a Canada in an alternate multi-verse?
The Canadian Supreme Court has ruled on the issue. Wiki says:
"In February 2013, the Court released its reasons in Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission v Whatcott. The Court held that, although Bible passages, biblical beliefs and the principles derived from those beliefs can be legally and reasonably advanced in public discourse, extreme manifestations of the emotion
described by the words "detestation" and "vilification" cannot be."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
In case you'd forgotten, Bill Whatcott is now persecuting the unsuspecting people of the Philippines!

Just ONE of the provable FALSEHOODS in his diatribe. Many males are not genetically "XY" males, as there are females who are not "XX" females. Babies are born who are not clearly male or female, and there are those born with the attributes of BOTH sexes: hermaphrodites.
Another LIE: "A security guard at a grocery store in New York City was arrested last week and charged with assault for doing her job of escorting a sexually confused male from the women’s restroom."
She assaulted a trans woman who was TRYING to use the appropriate restroom, spewing homophobic abuse at her and violently shoving her down aisles and out the door, you UGLY piece of SHIT.

Hey Brian, I was there when your founder Reverend Donald Wildmon came to my town in Mississippi probably at least 40 years ago. He made me nervous then by his opinions.
I know Methodists who were conflicted over him then. Brian, you are a stupid idiot. You say everyone according to your god's plan is either male or female from the moment of "when." Then you go on to say; "Everyone is either a male or a female from the moment HE was conceived to the moment HE dies."
Oh, poor Brian. Aren't females conceived, too? Brian, you left out half the universe in your rant. You are as stupid in my book as the founder of AFA, Donald Wildmon. You just don't know it.

Women are vessels of wrath and temptation. Every good Christian™ knows that.
Vessels aren't conceived; they're molded on the potter's wheel.

Facebook "famously believes" there are 58 genders?! If it is so famous, why has no one I know ever heard of it?

Why does "Satan" have to send a "Gay Gestapo" to destroy "sexual normalcy" (whatever that is)? There are plenty of "straight", white, religious folk who do it quite well themselves.
Countless politicians, religious figures, Duggars, the list goes on and on.
Please, take the credit you deserve.

I do not want Mr. Fisher to forget that the god he worships is "all powerful" in his neck of the backwoods, and he believes that that god could do anything he damn well pleased. Therefor nothing, at least in Fisher's mind, would prevent his god from making all of those other initials well after his book was written by fallible humans so many centuries ago. Apparently, his god really is not as omnipotent as it should be.

Those who use the Constitutional protection due religion to pimp belief in preposterous nonsense — the absurd and thoroughly discredited lie that every word of their "Bible" is the "literal Truth" and "God's Word," — have no basis to define the nature of reality for any sane human being.
If Bryan Fisher was not protected under the rubric of religion
he'd be in prison for criminal fraud.

What Bryan Fisher does is dishonest, cowardly and cruel;
if that's your religion suck it.

Regardless of whom says it, there are two only two sexes in the human species, male and female. Any human might think himself or herself as presenting any number of gender roles, but unless that human was born with only one "X" sex chromosome, that human is either male (XY) or female (XX).
There's nothing criminal or immoral in any human's "gender presentation," but the presentation doesn't actually change that human's sex chromosomes.

That isn't technically true. A zygote with XX chromosomes still has the potential to become male if the X chromosome from the male parent contains the SRY gene.
Or... something.

did trump and sanders just agree to a national debate?
no. no. no. no. no. that's not how any of this works.

is sanders actually considering an independent run?
or hoping that he does well in the debate and that will make all the super delegates flip to him?
how much you want to bet that trump pushes him into attacking Clinton and the democratic party the entire debate. sen sanders, the shark has been jumped.

American Family Association: The Gay Gestapo Is On A Mission From Satan To Destroy All Sexual Normalcy
May 25, 2016 Crackpots, Hate Groups, Religion

“The Gay Gestapo is on a mission from the Dark Lord to relentlessly harass, intimidate, punish, and silence every advocate of sexual normalcy.
“According to the Creator of every living human being, there are two and only two genders. Not five (as in LGBTQ) or 31, as New York City is now proposing, nor 58 as Facebook famously believes.
“Everything we know about biology and genetics confirms this. Everyone is either a male or a female from the moment he was conceived to the moment he dies. Bruce Jenner is a male, has been for his entirely earthly existence, and will be until the day he dies.
“But soon in Canada, it will be a crime to proclaim what the Bible and science teach about gender.
“And lest you think we are immune from this treacle in the U.S., a security guard at a grocery store in New York City was arrested last week and charged with assault for doing her job of escorting a sexually confused male from the women’s restroom.
“It’s a ‘brave new world’ out there all right, and it will take people of bravery, courage and boldness to survive it and overcome it. May God be with us all.” – Bryan Fischer, writing for the American Family Association.
