Anybody else think "Jesus Loves Me" is a creepy song when you think about it?

Proclaiming an invisible friend loves you because you hate minorities and will go to an everlasting paradise because you treat some people poorly, to the point they may suicide?
Naw, seems perfectly normal.

If Hell is a tiny room in South Carolina with florescent lighting, 300 Xtian bigots that is 90 degrees in May and 100% humidity, then yes Hell exists.
Seriously, as a Kinsey 6 gay man, you can dip me in honey and throw me to the lesbians. Anything would be preferable to listening to those people mumbling and chanting about their zombie god....

No, it's honey. (Some say chocolate. Google's failed me on the origin of the phrase, but being an old timey dyke, I can tell you it goes back AT LEAST to the '80s. Probably the '70s)

i wonder if moderate Christians will wake up to the fact that hell is a sadistic fantasy of unfathomable proportions projected onto an "all-loving" god they created to avoid the sad reality of sadistic fantasies among many christians

Most moderate Christians don't consider Hell to be a required belief, nor do most have any specific abstract beliefs about the nature of the divine-- most moderate Christians are there for the church community and assurance in the face of death. If they're into punishment, they're probably not all that moderate.

I've found most 'Christians' who are all about hell and punishment are those who came to religion after a traumatic event in their lives, especially losing a loved one. They are angry people and seem to want everyone else to suffer the same way they have.

The "fire & brimstone" imagery is metaphorical---although it became more amped up by Biblical writers seeking the very human "eternal vengeance on God's (MY!) enemies" thing.
To believe in a place/state of eternal torment is pretty much the definition of Fundamentalism (i.e., it has nothing to do w/ true* following of the Prince of Peace).
* Yes, I said "true". Feel free to insert the bog-standard citation of True-Scotsman...

So what is the metaphoric version of hell in your eyes?

Wasn't there some recent research showing that reflecting on "what God wants" activated the exact same parts of the brain involved with one's own desires?

I can see it, too...some gospel songs are actually a lot of fun (remember 'God's Trying to Tell You Something" from The Color Purple?), and a LOT of classical music can be considered 'religious' in nature. One of my most favorite pieces is Vivaldi's 'Gloria'. Still, just because the church is pretty doesn't mean dark things don't go on inside it.

I love gospel music. But it takes serious artistry to pull it off if you ask me.
Used to attend Glide Memorial services in SF in the early & mid 90s w/ a friend. Was never religious to begin with but if anything could get me there it was attending services there. It was more concert than sermon. Dancing and singing along, was a lot of fun.

Lol...actually I had a former co-worker/friend that had substance abuse & legal problems. He lived at a half-way & rehab house in the city. To live in the facility he had to meet specific requirements. One of which was community service. He volunteered in the soup kitchen at Glide, and as we were friends he got me involved as well. In fact I credit him with jump starting my volunteer work.
And yes, a LOT of lgbt people attend services there. But I never really cruised or anything.

Well, we DID sing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" at Episcopal summer camp—it was in a little camp song book laying around the dining hall.
But we added ". . . between the sheets" to spiff it up a bit.

"Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing . . . "
You can see where that's going.

We go to a high church as well. The piano's used sparingly, often an instrumental piece with piano and flute(s), and usually when going to the rail or an aria but it' she singer that's the moving instrument. It's never used during the Great Euchrist for the Sanctus or Fractional.

Another thought--a trio dressed to look exactly like them. They show up at, say Trump rallies, silent, expressionless, with dead stares. They smell strongly of mothballs and mustard.
Mumbling at first, getting louder and louder, and finally stuttering at full volume with total rage, "What about JESUS!??" they yell, staring all the while at Trump. "What about JEEEESUSSS?!" "WHAT ABOUT JESUS!?"...
If anyone tries to shush them up they'll violently rotate in their direction, producing a crucifix at arm's length and in a commanding voice say "I bind you in the name of Jesus! Be gone satan! You are bound in the name of Jesus! Kaba doda kondola...[etc.]"
I just think more oddball and unsettling threater is needed at these Republican rallies. And maybe it's time to get ready for bed.

Think what they must have been hoping for, The Joyful Sounds, only to sell copies just to their church, a few relatives, and not much more. Even with the matching costumes. Pretty sad.
But it goes on today. I see ads on TV saying "Inspire the World!" It's for a vanity press that will publish whatever Christian mental dribblings you care to send them. Which you pay for, of course. And they encourage your fantasy that you'll thereby be some great evangelist when you'll only sell less than 50 copies.
Just another form of grifting.

Actually, can anyone point to a place in the Bible where it actually claims to be God's word? I can't think of any. Even in the Epistles, St. Paul (that creep) never claims that the words are anyone's but his. All this stuff about the "infallible word of God" seems to have been tacked on after the fact.

John of Patmos (or a later editor) seems to have tacked it on to the end of Revelation (which too many see as a statement about the 1000+ small print onion skin pages preceding it), and there are some claims in Deuteronomy and the early Prophets, but not for the Bible as a whole. The Bible as a whole didn't exist until after the fact and Paul (the creep) even explicitly states in one of the epistles that his letter is NOT God's word, but only his own.

That's kind of what I meant. Thanks for bringing it up.
There's chronologically "old," with which I'm beginning to identify.
There's also an "old" that refuses to accept, much less embrace, the present and insists on clinging to the past. This "old" has a very selective memory and drowns itself in sentiment and nostalgia.
Like you've said, these folks are afraid of things they don't understand so they herd and cloak themselves in religion, believing it gives them moral superiority to impose their will upon others.
You, I, and nearly all we know understand how the past has contributed to our present -- and it's over and done. We live in the present and have young minds that see the potential of the future. We are not those people trying to hold others back.
Thanks for your response.

So this SC school board really thought that it was entirely a matter of their choice whether or not they would comply with a federal court's ruling? As if the law is a buffet table--take what you want, leave what you don't want. Why argue with these dopes, and what to argue about? The law stands and court orders compel compliance. Period. Somebody needs to explain these simple principles to these ignoramuses.

They decided they didn't want a church where an Ethiopian Eunuch might find welcome as a brother, where a Roman centurion and his "boy" are praised as the epitome of faith and devotion, where, when people ask "What about him, that one you love?", Jesus' response is "How's that any of your business?".

What a creepy song for them to sing, its nowhere as near as creepy as Carly Fiorina singing she did for Ted Cruz's daughters. But them singing jesus songs when it comes to a persons civil rights isn't helping their case that this isn't about them persecuting a minority, by exploiting a fear that has yet to happen.
by all means believe in whatever you want when it comes to religion, but be prepared to be called onto your bullshit when you try to use it to deny peoples human rights.

Then he can leave. I won't text for a few days. I'll play it cool when I do. But he will probably have moved on because he's got a lot of people to "love". Then I'll see him at the farmer's market where he's buying kale for smoothies (dodged a major bullet there), and it will be super awkward. He'll start pulling at the stitches from the spear wound on his side. And his entrails will spill out. I will be like "I don't want to make a scene." But you know he is already trying to condemn my mortal soul or some shit. I'll just back away from his passive aggressive meltdown. Back to my house and into the many loving arms of my new beau Shiva - who is not above cuttin' a bitch and who is also seriously fed up with Stalking Jesus and his crap.

My grandparents were BIG Christians.
They were also BIG racists.
And my grandmother sexually molested me when I was six.
Then one day when I was at their church, I excused myself to go to the bathroom. Just before rounding a corner, I stopped, hearing church elders.
"Ni**ers are taking over the neighborhood. We have to sell the church and move."
I was twelve, and at that moment I lost my faith. My faith in the ability of any self-proclaimed Christian to live as Jesus preached; to know anything about love, acceptance, and forgiveness. To know anything about grace.
To this day, many decades later, my automatic response to anybody who states that they are a Christian is to think:
Hypocrite! Liar! Hater! Pedophile!

And the best part is that they think this is a persuasive rhetorical strategy to convince us rational people that it's a bad idea to let transgender people use a public restroom like any member of the public should be entitled to do.
I have to keep reminding myself of the positive so that I don't go insane. On the bright side, these people will die soon and be replaced by a younger, more tolerant generation. And outside of their backwards pockets of insular, proudly ignorant communities, they are already outnumbered.

Well at least the school board was smart enough to follow the 4th Circuit ruling. That's progress (sort of).
OT but imagine my surprise this morning when my local radio news and traffic station had Florida governor Rick Scott on this morning. Apparently the asshat is in CA try to lure away some jobs to Florida. The interview was pretty bad but I had to laugh when the first question was "why do you think raising the minimum wage is going to kill jobs in California when it didn't in Florida?" and the followup was basically "Why would companies want to move from California to a place with critters and huge bugs and unpleasant weather?" Needless to say, Rick Scott didn't really have any compelling answers. And then when I got out of work I heard a little blurb that made it sound like Gov. Jerry Brown pretty much mocked him for coming to CA to lure jobs to Florida. Sadly, the interviewers dolidn't bring up Cara Jennings but it was still amusing.

Amazing what a Federal Court case will change, huh?
I listened to the oral arguments in the Virgina case and that is exactly what the Federal judge said, "Well if some students are uncomfortable with having transgender students in the same bathroom with them, why can't they go use the nurse's restroom? Why are your forcing the transgender student into using the nurse's restroom, the other students could use it as well couldn't they?"
I like this for this reason, a thousand adults can protest to protect their special snowflakes all they want however inside the schools I bet very very few students are going to go use the nurse's restroom. In other words the parents care deeply but the kids as all young people are wont to do, as an act of rebellion against their parents will NOT go use the nurse's restroom.
I do believe the Federal Judge who said that the other students can go use the nurse's restroom is black, not sure but I think I remember that.

most people are way more concerned with jobs and education, and people who bother to vote have mostly made up their minds which way that will go already. i certainly don't believe that republicans are going to get huge numbers of new supporters off the back of this issue. it makes me believe that republican strategists are even more stupid than i had previously thought.

I think I heard someone shout "good answer!" like they were on Family Feud. This is proof that these people have no idea what it is to be civil or civilized, and that they have no intention of learning what this is really about, or what it is to be transgendered. Like cows to the slaughter they are led by the guy with all the hot air bellowing about his little girl in the bathroom with a pedophile, and they all hoot and holler like it's the truth. Fucking idiots.

And so did Donald Trump.
The article says that "More than 500 people gathered to protest AND SUPPORT Horry County Schools policy on transgender student bathroom use..." Some of them were haters. Some of them were there in support of transgender rights. Some of them may have voted for Clinton. Some of them may have voted for Trump, or Cruz, or Bernie. We don't know. It really isn't relevant.
We give lip service to needing a 50 state strategy but then dismiss states like this as the "Deep South" or "Confederate States." But there are dye-hard, liberate, Democratic activists who live there and are working hard to turn their states purple and blue. They are the activists who gave North Carolina's electoral votes to Obama in 2008, and turned Virginia blue for two election cycles.
So (a) don't assume these haters are Clinton voters, because statistically there's a good chance they voted Republican, and (b) don't just dismiss the entire state because there are a lot of progressives there (like the person the haters tried to silence) trying to make things better there.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Haters Sing “Yes Jesus Loves Me” To Silence Transgender Rights Supporter [VIDEO]
May 2, 2016 Civil Rights, LGBT News, Religion

But there’s a happy ending (for now) below. From Myrtle Beach Online:

More than 500 people gathered to protest and support Horry County Schools policy on transgender student bathroom use, and while the board was in executive session a conflict broke out between a policy supporter and protestors. The group occasionally broke out in song to silence the woman who questioned why transgender students cannot have the same rights as non-transgender students.
Yesterday in the same town:

Nearly 1,000 people came from all over the county to pray outside the Horry County Schools District Office Sunday afternoon. Leaders from 10 churches around the area organized the meeting, and several of them were on hand to lead the faithful in prayers for both the safety of their children and the wisdom of their Board members. The meeting comes after district officials announced a special-called School Board meeting to take place Monday. The School Board called the meeting to decide if they should continue to comply with a federal court ruling in favor of a Virginia transgender student who wished to use the bathroom of the gender he identified with.
And just two hours ago:

The board voted on a resolution to follow the law under the recent 4th Circuit Court ruling on Title IX and will explore all possible legal avenues on the issue — including filing an amicus brief in support of the Virginia school district. The School Board also said non-transgender students will be allowed to use private bathrooms in the nurse’s office of they feel uncomfortable with transgender people. Nearly all of the school board members said they didn’t support the 4th Circuit Court ruling, but they have to follow the law. They vow to fight it.
From GLAAD:

“GLAAD and our partners are prepared to lead a national boycott of Myrtle Beach should the Horry County school board take any action that would reverse the decision that has already been announced or perpetuate any further discrimination against this student or others.” – Zeke Stokes, Vice President of Programs, GLAAD.
