This grandmother found the best way to advertise JW.org by wearing a huge lapel pin.

None
Some of the comments are really interesting.

Link to article:
http://www.phillyvoice.com/obama-award-medal-valor-family-slain-philadelphia-police-officer-robert-wilson-iii-monday/
This was shared on Facebook by a brother. Unfortunately the comments are not really what a JW would expect.

That is appalling of her to use this event as an opportunity to advertise!
Was her grandson even a witness? Would he have been happy with her doing this? She has distracted from the reason she was invited to meet the president. The event was to show respect for his life and police service, not JW.org

Her grandson couldn't have possibly been a JW if he was a cop, right? That was always what I was told, anyway - you couldn't work in a job that required you to carry a gun and that might require the use of lethal force.

Very true. It is so annoying and disgusting. I bet she got brownie points at the local KH or maybe she will get an appearance on JW TV.
The first picture is interesting:
Medal of Valor - Robert Wilson IIII
She is standing with a raised head, show of strength or something. While Obama is head down, sorry for the loss!
She is there to advertise not respect.

Has she been counselled by her elders for her "gender blurring hair style and men's jacket"?

I think her wearing that pin was hypocritical and self-serving. I have no doubt that the elders in her congregation urged her to wear it as a "witness."
It's hypocritical because no JW in good standing can serve as an armed policeman. Accepting an honor for what her grandson did while at the same advertising her religion which disapproves of his doing so is two-faced at the very least.
I am very sorry the young man was killed, especially in the line of duty. But I have no respect for someone who would use the occasion of the President honoring his sacrifice to promote her own contrary beliefs and serve her New York GOD's (Guardians of Doctrine).
Have they no shame? No. They must promote the organization at all costs.
Something, something, something... and the horse they rode in on.

Makes perfect sense. JW's forbid service to your community such as this mans, and they believe the US government is a shell which Satan uses for his bidding......why not throw on a mini billboard, and meet the president receiving a medal for the honor your grandson served in while you disapproved.
Arrogant bastards.

This whole JW.org business drives me absolutely insane. It is CRASS COMMERCIALISM masquerading as a form of RELIGIOUS WITNESSING. It is ill mannered, rude, crass, and nothing more than RELIGIOUS HUCKSTERISM!

I think her wearing that pin was hypocritical and self-serving
hypocritical and self-serving and there you have the makeup of a Jehovahs Witness
She was probably hoping that Obama would ask her what that mini-billboard as someone else called it was all about and she would tell him and then claim that she was able to witness to the President of the United States. Oh, and he took the magazines, yeah right. I bet she had her speech all planned out for the next meeting,

I will guess that she will be interviewed at this summers convention because of the fine witness she gave to the world and to the President. I would not be surprised if she also counted her time while she wore her badge of honor. The company that sells the JW Org badges will see a spike in business. The badges will get bigger. To boost hours reported in field service, no doubt time will be counted for badge time.

Just to throw out another scenario. Suppose Officer Wilson comes from a large JW family and is the equivalent of the family black sheep. The rest of the family are being good Witnesses and not acknowledging his existence, whereas the grandmother is not putting up with that crap and is wearing the lapel pin in a sort of "in your face GB" way, pointing out the hypocrisy of the Organization and inviting the criticism that this story will generate.
Probably not the case, but I'd like to think this is the case.

Why his grandma? Divorced? Were his JW family even speaking to him? Most JWs are not proud of their children who are not doing things the JW way.
That was pretty offensive-the huge pin. The little bitty version. . . at least wouldn't have been obtrusive.

She is participating in 'honoring' her grandson? with a medal no less?! I wonder if she ever 'honored' him with a birthday card or cake? Not to sound flippant, just wondering how receiving one of the highest honors there is goes over in dubland? the elders are ok with this as long as she wears advertising?

I keep trying to figure out how she fits in his life. She and the 2 sons were listed as his next of kin-though he has a sister. Clearly, she didn't hold back from telling HIM about "the truth", so just as clearly, he rejected WT teaching, as he was buying his son a birthday present. Why does she have anything to do with this man or his life or death? I hope his kids have a normal mom, would you want a JW gramma who is that rabid to be raising a kid who lost his dad while he was buying him a birthday present?

Was Sgt. Robert Wilson 111 , a practicing Jehovah`s Witness in good standing ? I don`t think so.
More likely he was either a fader or had rejected the teachings of the Jehovah`s Witnesses long ago to become a police officer.
However this grandmother saw an opportunity to promote the JW cult and maybe count some time in the process at her grandsons expense.
The Obama administration/security failed to identify this breach of propaganda for personal causes that the White House does not endorse.
Where was his mother ? his father ? Are they Jehovah`s Witnesses in good standing ? or had they long left the religion too  presumably as their son had done.

Her grandson was shot to death.
Leave her the h#ll alone.

This is so typical of the victim-mentality in which emotion overrules everything and the "victim's" sympathisers minimise how she contributed to the furore. She willingly seized an opportunity to 'sup with the secular authorities" to receive an award for a deceased grandson who was in a line of work that JWs are NOT free to engage in and she simultaneously "bumper-stickered' her religious affiliation. To put it bluntly, she asked for it.
On the other hand, had she gone to the awards ceremony and not "bumper-stickered" her affiliation, but someone recognized her and called her out for being a JW THAT would be unfair.
If you bumper-sticker your affiliation in a situation where it is not the focus, you can expect reactions.
Don't go crying, "Persecution!"

Since shunning is looked upon as a form of Hatred crime. I wonder if these changes may alter the shunning practices in the WT world

raven
raven 2 days ago
Interesting.. Where did you see the article for this? What does this bill do? Protect the trans from being discriminated against? I highly doubt the WT will change any of their shunning practices of DF'd, DA'd, or inactive ones, although they claim it's not shunning.. I'm sure they'll go with something a long the lines of how society can change but God doesn't.

Anders Andersen
Anders Andersen 2 days ago

No. (Haven't read the article)
If really needed they'll change the wording on shunning policy to say it's a matter of conscience to avoid bad association. And then they'll counsel everybody until their conscience is aligned with the corporate shunning policy.
Just like in Bulgaria they promised the government that dubs would have freedom of choice in all medical procedures, including blood transfusions, without DFing or judicial action. And since then the policy is that everybody who accepts blood DAed themselves, unless 2 elders (not a JW!) deem the offender repentant.
They will find a way to make sure they continue to spread ignorance, hate, prejudice and bigotry without their official policies saying as much black on white

dubstepped
dubstepped 2 days ago
Nothing will ever change it. Shunning isn't just an organizational mandate, but they see it as Biblical, just like the two witness rule. No governmental organization will change it. They can change things like house to house records, as that's not in the Bible, but shunning is here to stay.

 +1 / -0
steve2
steve2 2 days ago

No. Individuals choosing to shun others does not constitue a hate crime, whether framed as religious or otherwise.
Human rights legislation seldom supersedes religious beliefs.
Imagine if you were forced to have contact with certain individuals that you genuinely believed were undesirable company.
I appreciate that organizational shunning feels like a hate crime but JW org has been scrupulously careful to state they do not hate ex-Witnesses and their shunning is an attempt to uphold their "Biblical" standards. Besides, they can produce literature that shows they want shunned members to repent and return. Their mantra is, we hate what you have done, not you.
Sure, I know it is all white-washing of a hugely damaging policy - but in no way can individual members be forced to ignore their "consciences".
BTW, in New Zealand, there is an increasing trend towards unigender restrooms so it is not an issue.

No, you can only be one gender at a time while in there. No transformation surgeries allowed on site.
I think single gender washrooms will be great. I don't make a habit of going into ladies washrooms but they tend to be much cleaner than the mens. Now I won't have to do my Emily Howard voice.

The cult has a teem of attorneys working for them. They never DF anyone for any particular thing. Its some term that refers to not being clean in the christian congregation of some such bull shit. Although its getting harder for them to walk a line. But even so you would have a conflict of religious freedom and that rights of others. That said, I am not sure about Canada but in the states a religion has a lot of room to preach things that may not pass other areas. You may end up with what I think is known as a constitutional crisis.

There is simply no way to legislate against shunning. Unless someone figures out a way to legislate and subsequently enforce someone to talk to someone else, forget it.
Legislating for physical things like access to a washroom or wheelchair access is easy. Trying to create a law for more vague notions like "make someone have to be my friend" is impossible which is why it's so rarely attempted.

Jehovah Witness vs Jehovah's Witness

being brought up as a jehovah's witness means you are so used to the term that you rarely stop to think about it.. one thing i've noticed is that people unfamiliar with the religion will say "jehovah witness" (no 's) instead which i always found a bit grating.. but watching the us election, something struck me.

people are often referred to as "trump supporters", not "trump's supporters" and so on.

thinking about other things, people would say they were "united fan's", not "united's fans" and so on.. it seems weird that a group would refer to themselves as though it was someone else talking about them (in the 3rd person, if i have that right).. what do you think?

as a former dubber i had many occasions to doubt that the end was coming.

i was told it was ok to doubt but not to think about it too much and wait on jehovah.

that bull shit lasted until they changed the meaning of generation in 95 and that was the end of that bull shit for me.

Prince: frustration and relief
by AFreeBeliever in Watchtower Society / JW.org

i haven't posted in a long time, but all this news re: prince has brought up alot of "stuff" for me.

having been a born-in 3rd generation until being disfellowshipped, losing all of my family and friends i had since birth in one big go, i find myself going between frustration, and honestly some feelings of resentment, and ...relief...regarding prince (who, by the way, i am not disparaging personally, just, as most of us know, he would have been held up as the perfect example of what not to be by the watchtower organization and the double-standard/hypocrisy is rather stunning).

resentment/frustration, due to my personal experiences and those of many i knew.
