 Already just 15 mins in...
 I've noticed....
Family business working less than 8 hours a day checking in
 Days text in morning
 Overbearing brother
New job in city taking all his time...
"unscriptural associate" taking him in the wrong direction
Immediately at work a girl takes interest in him... (if only it was that easy!)

Oh wow. What can one say to that little movie?
As a mother of two boys myself ... I hope they've flown the coop and are out enjoying life way before they hit the ages of David and James! Blech

I couldn't watch it to the end!! Can't stand the controlling family. Wake-up, your son has grown-up, he is no longer a small child, even birds know not to keep their chicks in the nest past the time that they can fly on their own! I would have been so happy, if that was my son, I would have been proud that he is taking an initiative to be independent. Don't stunt him. So against nature itself.
I can see how someone coming from a family like that would become rebellious just out of spite.  So very very sad what that society is doing to families--it is beyond sad--it is evil.

I listened (occasionally glancing over my shoulder) to the whooooole thing. No one else could have produced it. Good guy characters (every loyal JW in it), were so very, very good, and bad ones (the worldly people and the "bad association" were so very band it looked and sounded stilted.
The only hope I hold out for this Watchtower production is that a few JW parents might see what compassion looks like--and the super self righteous be made uncomfortable by what they saw of themselves in the older brother. Still I don't hold out a lot of hope for it's impact. After all, if the original script--Jesus parable--couldn't make an impact on them, how will this adolescent rewrite?
BTW, Did anyone notice how many times the boy's actions were blamed as the cause of his parents pain? Or that his father, who dropped him off for the Judicial Committee meeting (not going in) made it clear that he would follow whatever the JC decided?

Yes Cee Cee ... I noticed that. It's why I wasn't so shocked when my parents chose to shut me out for a while when I first left the religion. I knew it would happen because they put their religion first! So many jdub parents do that and then wonder why they no longer have a close relationship with their kids. Or adult kids in this case.

Guy Pierce a GB member since October 1999, died of a massive stroke.
I wonder who will replace him now? A 25 year old? How many more generations need to overlapp. Obviously condolences to his family... I guess they think he is in heaven now.

I wonder how many deaths and child rapes he could have prevented if he'd had the guts to stand up against the evil regulations of the watchtower(R)?
No sympathy from me I'm afraid.

In the jw.org press release they say: "Mr. Pierce was the chairman for the 129th annual meeting of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, on the weekend of October 5 and 6, 2013. A total audience of 1,413,676 in 31 countries attended the event either in person or via webcast. According to the Witnesses’ official website, this was the largest gathering of Jehovah’s Witnesses to date." I would like to go ahead and call this what it is - a planned farce of a statistic that means absolutely nothing. This thing took place over two days so it's no different than the memorial. They have made the word gathering an arbitrary and meaningless designation. I heard my sister getting all excited over this and couldn't help but think how sad it is that he organization will stoop this low to drum up excitement. It's more canned than SPAM.

Maybe the very fact they had 1,413,676 is in itself and indication of a random number chosen to look less random Dave!

When I have gatherings, I don't have them in multiple locations. Everyone comes to the same place. This is the definition of "gathering."

Yes Brother Dave ... but do you add the obligatory jdub 'the' in front of your version of 'gathering'? As in 'the gathering' at Dave's place. Or 'the friends' as opposed to 'my friends'? haha

Does anyone know what this is all about, where they say some jws are saying this memorial may be the last.  Are they pushing that Armageddon will come before the next one?

I kinda hope that they really are drumming this up in their minds because it will mean a lot of disappointed JW's next year about this time. What was that scripture about justice postponed making the heart sick?

Didn't you hear? Every Memorial is the last one. Same with every convention and assembly I've ever been to.

I kinda hope that they really are drumming this up in their minds because it will mean a lot of disappointed JW's next year about this time.

Me too. However, as a reference... at my last convention, I distinctly remember the guy on the platform saying "friends we're not counting the years we're counting the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until Armageddon." Here we are 5 years later. The last time I had a JW press me on my beliefs I brought this up to him and he said "so you're saying you're dissapointed in Jehovah for not bringing Armageddon yet?" No you idiot. I'm saying it's not coming at all.
I think most of them conveniently forget about this stuff. All part of the dissonance.

Jesus facepalm just about sums it up, lol Dave.
Last memorial
The GB would love to drop the memorial because it has become an accusation undermining their credibility.
Firstly during the whole of the period dominated by Fred Franz, (late thirties to the mid nineties?) they looked forward to the numbers of partakers declining, which would signify to the faithful that the end was near. It was inconceivable that the “old world” would exist past 1975 anyway...then--- no later than 1999 or at the very outermost time limit 2014 (in accord with their false doctrine of the” 1914 generation”.)
A first principle in understanding the Watchtower organisation is that they get everything wrong. Everything they say, whilst always untrue, is only ever believable for a short while. This is in contrast to the real world of concrete, evidential knowledge. The Watchtower leaders are a bunch of delusional, self-interested pedagogues who spout cult-speech to keep the drones in line, and their pathetic drones are culturally programmed to obey.
Remember that by their doctrinal reckoning, there should have been none or very few new partakers at the memorial after the year 1935!!!  Most of the old-timers are now dead and yet the number of partakers of the memorial emblems has risen considerably in recent years and now stands at the same level as it was in the early 1960s... and Armageddon was supposed to have happened by the end of the last century. A thorough testament to Watchtower wrong-headedness.
It is hardly any wonder they hope it is the last memorial because they cannot handle the self-determined”anointed” making their presence felt in their midst who stand as an affront and challenge to the governing body's own self appointed role as Gods chosen ones!
Since the GB rule by edict not by divine inspiration and change doctrine according to cult needs and credibility; methinks they will change the memorial ritual to exclude the possibility of the heretical “anointed” partakers from being counted in future...and hence it could make it the last memorial as we knew it.

A long aquaintance with the literature of the Witnesses leads one to the conclusion that they live in the intellectual ‘twilight zone’.

There's lean and then there's controlling the bleeding. IMO all indications from the last 5 years show the Borg is losing money.

You're right Sharon ..... sadly there will be a whole big bunch of jdubbies who will see the branch closure and other 'downsizing' as being a 'sign of the times' ..... they'll be putting their heads between their legs again .......................................

FYI:

This week's TM/SM meeting included an announcement that summer 2014's convention is expected to be too big for the 5,000 seat West Palm Beach Christian Convention Center (bought by by Jehovah's Witnesses 10 years ago for $12,500,000). Instead, this convention, billed as "International" will be held in a much larger (rented ?) venue in Orlando, Florida. They said their WPB Center will be used for foreign language groups this summer.

Hmm, what makes an English-only group "International"?

I watched the PBS documentary on Amish Shunning last night. I wonder if there was always a good bit of shunning in human societies and that its relatively new that groups don't do it.   What it reinforced for me is that some individuals want to be part of  'the people' and they will put up with and do whatever they must to be in the clique. I am very sad, again, but what is new.  Time to carry on, get to work.

Good Morning, Mr. Kevin Throw heart kisses

Take your ass to work...and know we love you.
It's not just the JW, many suffer from religious abuse but we can hopefully support any of them when dealing with what we know they will.

Don't be sad again Kevin ....... not everyone is a fan of good old fashioned shunning. If they were ... our forum would be tiny!!!!

I have been reading the 'they just know' thread on this board, and it made me think of all those ambiguous situations where I was percieved to be doing something unspiritual, but there was no scripture to actualy cover the perceived wrong doing, e.g. I decided to widen my reading list beyond the watchtower and awake (because they boring me rigid) and decided to read some of the classics. I made the mistake of mentioning I was reading Dracula by Bram Stoker, and a 'brother' told me this was inappropriate. When I responded that it was just a story and a classic novel, the patronising response I got was 'well if you can't see that there is something wrong with you reading that, you need to re-evaluate where you are in the truth'.
I felt this was uttered because there was an 'elders wife' present. (There's a topic for another thread, being a woman and told you can't hold any responsibility, but if you're an elders wife you have associated spiritual credits/respect, but I digress). When I objected, I was told 'this is a matter for your own conscience' which was meant to indicate 'go away, think about and relaise why you are wrong'.
Does anyone else have any situations they experienced regarding Patronising spirital scoring/pecking orders involving situations that have no basis in the bible?
P.S. 'Elders Wives' ......  any experiences or comments?

I was never an elder's wife, but I am an elder's daughter. As a young adult I got called into a few elders mtgs. One mtg was called with me and a few others that had seen the same movie together. A newly baptized sister had gone with us to the movie and got bent out of shape over it because there was one brief scene with naked people. It was a very non-sexual scene - just the distant backsides of women getting ready in a shower room. I can't remember which movie it was, but at that time I hadn't yet watched any R rated movies. So, I know it was tame. The group of us tried to explain to the elders that it wasn't a bad movie, but they didn't care to hear a word we had to say. Their main concern was that we had offended a new one and that it was especially reproachable that an elder's daughter would see such a movie. So, in this case I was judged more so because I was an elder's daughter. Apparently I was supposed to take the lead in exiting the the theater. It was all very patronizing. We were around 20, but treated like kids, well actually worse because we were lectured without being able to present our case.

It wasn't a total bust.  You obviously must have "evaluated where you were in the truth".  smiley: wink
