The Path Fact-Checked: The Ugly Truth Behind Real-Life Cults
Part of Hassan's interview: "A lot of the older cults that have been around for a really long time, like the Jehovah’s Witnesses, for example, and even the Mormons, are having a really hard time with young people growing up in the age of the Internet, because they’ve been basically telling lies to their followers about their history, and now people can easily find out what’s true and not true, and look at their own literature and copies of their own literature. It’s causing massive defections, which is very interesting for me."

He's a good boy isn't he ? It took Steve a while to recognise the JW Org for what it is, but now, as one of the leading experts on Religious Cults, such statements as this have power.
And it is so true, we can see the "massive defections" from the JW's and Mormons etc.
What was a pin-prick in the bottom of the bucket when Steve wrote the first edition of Releasing the Bonds, has become a huge hole.
Thanks in no small way to him, and in an even bigger way to you two !

Steve Hassan: “Money is not always number two but power is always number one.”
That is a very important point which Mr. Hassan brought out! Charismatic cult leaders have a way of pursuing and obtaining money, property, fame, and sex; however, the most significant underlying motivation for them consistently is power.
When you take a look at the leaders of the Watchtower organization, especially the well-known charismatic leaders of their monarchical era (i.e., Franklin Rutherford), they are infamous for their quest for total control of their adherents, getting them to spend countless hours and money in support of the organization. As many of us are already aware, Rutherford managed to amass an extremely luxurious mansion and sizeable property (i.e., Beth Sarim), including two of the most expensive, high-end Cadillac cars around. Now, you may think that this was a monetary accomplishment – and it was – however, all that would not have been possible without first securing (apparently by legal strong-arm tactics) the one main thing which made him what he was and carried him along on the seas of unquestioning loyal support: POWER!
And where do all the current governing body members live? Bethel headquarters. Those desirable accommodations, all nice and neat and clean, with all the amenities – and, of course, all tax-free and served well by basically slave labor – are where those leaders live – that’s their “home,” and so the better their institutional facilities become, then all the more so their “home” becomes. It is all a reflection of themselves – and, subsequently, their power.
Remember, first comes the power, and then the fruits of people’s loyalty (i.e., various donations, wills, trusts, estates, insurance policies, etc.) will follow.
Mr. Hassan spoke well in identifying “what drives people who are leading cults.” He’s obviously been there himself and knows what he’s talking about.

The first thing which struck me about THE PATH is how authentic the structure and dialogue felt. TV and movies almost never get religion right. Two things authors cannot do, 1. Write smarter than they are 2. Create believable "spiritual" situations if they are non-believers.
This TV series comes closest to being Scientology without simply stealing or parodying. I find it compelling.

Our last conversation was him yelling at me because I "loved the gays". Translation, I pointed out that nobody chooses their sexuality. Anyway. I've been shunned since DAing last September, and really for a year or so after visiting my DF'ed brother.
So I get a call this morning from mom that he's in hospice, and one last chance to see him. I made sure that he actually wanted to see me. Anyway, we went and it was nice. My mom told me it would go however I wanted. She ran off other JWs and may have lost a friend over it, just so we could see him. The conversations went well, and I said goodbye and that I loved him for the first time I can remember. Everyone should die with dignity.
Anyway, the real point of this is to point out how absurd shunning is, something I pointed out to my mom. So we can come today, and whenever we want until he passes, and hang out and laugh, and even have hospic workers comment on the love on the room, but once he dies we're effectively dead too. How insanely freaking stupid is that. I made sure to point out that it was hard to get called in from shunning to pitch relief in the bottom of the 9th. It's crazy how they turn relationships on and off at will.

Dub I just want to offer my sincere condolences for what you are going through right now. I'm sorry your father is not doing well.
I am glad that you were at least afforded the opportunity to speak to him and relay your love.
I do hope your mom and family see the ridiculousness behind the whole shunning matter and loosen up on their stance. Maybe by what they have done already by removing all the jw's so you could visit your father is a sign that they could be at least be seeing the stupidity of leaving you out of family matters.
You guys are in my thoughts and prayers during this time. Keep strong man. HUGS!!!

Dear Dub,
I think what you said about being called in to pitch at the bottom of the ninth was so well put. That is just so true isnt it?
With that said, the fact that the hospice caregivers commented on the love in the room says so much about you and your character.
Lots of good thoughts to you as you go through this with your family.

Thanks my fellow aposta-peeps. It's such a messed up situation. My brother has been shunned for 13-15 years? and I let him know what was going on. He'd have to fly in if he was to come, and he's so torn about it all.
I do know one thing. No way would I go to a memorial service at a KH for him. My saying goodbye today was the end of the road. My brother won't go to a JW memorial either. There are certain brothers at my parents' congregation that would leave on stretchers if they were their snarky selves to me, and I couldn't stand to listen to their marketing pitch under the guise of being about my dead dad.
It was nice to be included. I respect my mom wholeheartedly for her handling of this. She tried to forbid brothers from stopping by to make sure that what energy dad had left went to his family. Of course, some brothers came anyway because they have no boundaries. But mom has always been her own person. She'll either wake up through this experience or she'll hold on even tighter to her dubdom.

It sounds like you are definitely going to have a semblance of a relationship with your mom at the end of this. But how sad if she doesn't, and loses two sons to the crazy religion. Maybe you can let her know you didn't disassociate yourself from HER, just the religion, and you will always love her and be there for her and she can reach out to you anytime.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad, dubstepped. I was with both my parents when they entered hospice, my mom in 2007 and my dad in 2010. Certain family members decided on their own to start shunning me (to varying degrees) after my mom passed. They didn't interfere with my spending the nights in dad's room (so he'd never be alone) and we had normal conversations about his condition and planning for how to handle things afterward. However, when it came to his memorial service, I was warned not to show up at the gathering afterwards for the "friends" or there would be a scene. I decided to let them wallow in their piety and self-righteousness in peace.
I'm very glad your mom is clearing the path for you to spend some time with your dad. That's very classy of her. I hope you can maintain a close relationship with her after this is over. She's gonna need you, whether she realizes it or not.
Stay strong, my friend.

Maybe the plan is to make it look like CVS/Walgreens/etc so it will be easier to flip later. Hey, but at least it has windows, so nobody can complain about that. All I can say is ugly. But perhaps that is appropriate and fits in with the rest of the American big box, strip mall architecture style.

I like this comment on their site, "I suspect this will make resell much easier and maybe get a higher price out of the sell". I thought the end was coming any day now; deep, deep, deep in these last days; just around the corner, on the threshold of the new system! Why resell? Blind!!!

This comment made me laugh

Change is always difficult to get used to.
The elders had a special meeting when the new design was introduced and they had the brothers on the design commitee talk about it. I remember one brother saying he was VERY MUCH against the commercial design, even as late as the meeting where they had to come to a final decision. But he said that after they prayed together as a body and discussed it it became evident this was the direction Jehovahs spirit was leading them.
I continue to think about what a humble attitude this brother displayed.
Change can be difficult but Jehovahs spirit keeps moving his organization in the direction that will be most beneficial for all.

What a joke !!

Seems to me like they all want to say what they REALLY think... it's horrid, it's ugly, can't believe anybody designed this, it looks like a factory, it looks like a warehouse'.... but they're all afraid to say it. Anyone who dares say it, covers it with a 'oh but I'm sure it'll look lovely when it's finished, jehovah's behind it all so let's support the organisation'. At least one had enough guts to stick the Walmart sign on... lol

From all the comments, they all seem to be fully aware of the WT's new function as build and resell- at-profit property developers. They are under no illusions but they don't care!!
The comment about it being the right shape to " float in a flood" made me laugh though!!!!

That forum is unbelievable! Are these real people? Typical for the Wits to be chastising each other for questioning whether or not the building is appealing (personal choice). If the same conversation took place on this board it would go like this:
A. I think this building is ugly.
B. Watch yourself, you're not agreeing with the brothers.

We have a new hall going up in our area with the new design. They just finished with the outside and are installing the dry wall. Looks to hold about 180. The photo makes it look much bigger than in person. Of course it is being built in a mixed use zoned area. So resale will be easy in a few years.

I've worked in real estate. They'll be doing well if they can sell that thing for what it cost to build. It has no appeal whatsoever, it will go for a low price because anybody who can afford something nicer won't buy it. If you're in business, you want a building that will make people want to come in. Business like CVS would probably build something to their own design. And if it sells a year from now, everybody in town is going to call "the old Kingdom Hall."

I received pictures from an old friend of a relatively new KH in the USA northeast and it doesn't look as bad as that. They must have changed the design even more than a two years ago.
Love how the witnesses on that site can't even speak their mind about how they personally feel about the design of a KH. Seriously? That is so sad. And if you asked any of them in person they would only admit to maybe not liking it at first but now they looooove it.

But he said that after they prayed together as a body and discussed it it became evident this was the direction Jehovahs spirit was leading them.
Evidently, Bronze Age desert gods are impressed by painted concrete blocky structures and flat roofs. I wonder if the walls go up high enough to serve as a parapet as required by the Mosaic Law.

Apparently, you can convince JW's to like anything the FDS tells them to...just ask "Brother Bob." And will somebody tell the commenters on JWTalk to stop using the word "homely" to describe KH's they like (which means "plain and ugly.") Oh, wait...maybe that IS what they mean...

How depressing. Looks like a suburban dentist's office.
Cliched question about JWs, 1980-2015: "Why do you guys have churches without any windows?"
Cliched question about JWs, 2016 - onward: "Why do you guys meet for church in a dentist's office?"

The Path Fact-Checked: The Ugly Truth Behind Real-Life Cults
http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/03/the-path-cults
"A lot of the older cults that have been around for a really long time, like the Jehovah’s Witnesses, for example, and even the Mormons, are having a really hard time with young people growing up in the age of the Internet, because they’ve been basically telling lies to their followers about their history, and now people can easily find out what’s true and not true, and look at their own literature and copies of their own literature. It’s causing massive defections, which is very interesting for me."

Here's another quote by Hassan and for any of you lurkers still in denial
here are the real questions to ask yourself.
The healthy influence respects people’s individuality and creativity, their conscience, and their free will. People can choose to follow or choose to leave, and there are no big threats around leaving. For example, people are in the Boy Scouts or they are in the Kiwanis Clubs.
The point is, are you free to leave? Are you free to join? Are you free to read whatever you want to read? Can you talk to former members? If the group is like, “Sure, talk to whoever you want to talk to,” they’re more likely to be on the left side of the continuum, and they may be a cult, but they’re not a mind-control cult, or a destructive cult, which, in my definition, is an authoritarian, pyramid-structured group, or relationship even.

There are many things to question about the intelligence of the designs emanating from the YHWH/JESUS Intelligent Design Studio.
Lauren Reid, a PhD candidate at Durham University, writing in 'The Conversation,' takes a look at why humans and spider monkeys are the only primates without a bone in their penises. Most mammals have such a bone, which is called a baculum . Humans don't, in spite of the term 'boner,' being in common usage, though whales, horses, rhinos, rabbits, elephants, marsupials and hyenas, were also designed without such a bone.
How does a baculum work? Quote: "The baculum is generally kept in the male’s abdomen until it is required, at which point abdominal muscles push it out into the penis, thus causing an erection." Quite effficient, don't you think? If you doubt that, think about this.Quote:"A male lion’s baculum, for instance, allows him to engage in an impressive 250 copulations in four days." Not many human males can equal that performance, can they?
The commercial success of drugs like Viagra and Cialis tell us that many humans are not quite satisfied with the design work of the YHWH/JESUS design team, in fact dissatisfaction can be as high as 40% in older human age groups. Perhaps, the hydraulic engineer on the YHWH/JESUS Design team was off sick on the sixth creative day, when humans were designed.
Read on: https://theconversation.com/the-human-penis-is-a-puzzler-no-bones-about-it-6366
PS: Later we can take a look at some other phallic designs by that great design team, the YHWH/JESUS INTELLIGENT DESIGN STUDIO, you will fall to your knees in wonder, mouthing the words, "How many your works are, O Jehovah! All of them in wisdom you have made." (Psalm 104:24, F.Franz translation)

_____________The Remarkable Story of Lili Boulanger____________
________________________________

There are stories that cannot be written and shouldn't be told because the truth of those stories cannot be embraced on first hearing. This is the life of a real person who appeared and vanished as though only dreamed up by an overly emotional writer.
Lili Boulanger was born to a father 77 years old, yet they formed an adoring bond almost from the moment she drew her first breath!
What now to tell you that you would believe?
What if I told you her mother was a Russian princess?
She was.
What if I said her family was swarming with musicality surrounded by great music and the finest composers and performers?
They were!
1892 was an unusual time in world history, especially in Paris.
As to Lili herself?
The remarkable French composer Gabriel Faure', her mother's music tutor, discovered the 2-year-old Lili possessed perfect pitch and an insuperable attraction to everything musical. Yes, 2 years of age when the average child is learning not to mess their own diaper and will perhaps soon be able to walk--Lili was already glowing with a prodigious promise of something extraordinary!

Her 77-year-old father was a teacher in the Paris Conservatory. Do you suppose he and his wife would see to it that Lili would have only the most sublime encouragement? Yes, you would be right! Lili learned to sing, play piano, cello, violin and harp instructed by the most finest of teachers.

By the time she was 19, Lili was competing for the Prix de Rome.
During her performance, she collapsed due to illness! She was diagnosed with intestinal tuberculosis. Now this is tragic enough already--is it not? So young, so talented and with such great promise but living in an age when the science of medicine was unequal to the task of restoring her health.

I will now disclose an even greater tragedy; she would only live 6 more years.
Her beloved father had died when she was only 6--so great a blow--and now with only a few more years to carry on with her second great love: music itself! What could she possibly accomplish? After all, this was not a time for women to rise to the top of any profession. And, being so young and so ill would prove to be no advantage. What can I say to you now that will make this story worth the telling?

Read on, my friend....read on!
First, as an aside, I shall now reveal that her older sister Nadia would grow up to be one of the great music teachers and a composer in her own right.
Among Nadia Boulanger’s students we find stellar greatness in the likes of Aaron Copland, Philip Gass, Astor Piazzolla, Quincy Jones, Michel Legrand, Virgil Thompson, Burt Bacharach, Daniel Barenboim, Robert Russell Bennett, just to name a very few!
Had Lili lived longer--what might she have done? We cannot know that, but, we can now give our full attention and consideration to the very reason I have elected to tell this story to you.

I had not previously heard of Lili Boulanger and neither have you, I suspect. Quite by accident I was researching her older sister and ran across Lili's own extraordinary music.
One cannot talk about music to others except to say idle things and to grunt opinions.
What I will do for you is one simple thing. I shall give you a reason for curiosity in exploring the compositions of Lili Boulanger--and this for a very good reason: this young ill-fated musical prodigy was fully up to the task of imbuing her own work with an incredibly intense love of life. Her music is delicate, rapturously melodic, numinous with mystical emotion and incredibly well orchestrated.

Oh, I failed to mention. . .!
Lili drove herself to recover enough strength to compete for the Prix de Rome again and was the very first woman to win the prize! Her sister, Nadia, passed away in 1979 and was laid to rest beside Lili in Montmartre.

But, enough with words!
Try her music and be transported from this Earth to a vision of oneness with life, nature and the eternal. Let the music wash over you and absorb this brief voice of a young woman so soon departed from life.
Let us celebrate her in the transcendence of her genius!

Why not explore her other works as well!

Thank you Terry. Doesn't it remind you of a film score, it has that epic feel to it? It reminds me to be grateful for having time left to achieve and to appreciate the beauty in our lives, art, music, the landscapes of the country I'm lucky enough to be born in.
She had such a short life but filled with music. Sometimes we complain about having only old age ahead of us but what's the alternative?

Terry
Terry 10 hours ago
Yes, indeed! Her work reminds me how many a genius was born and died in obscurity. Mozart came close. Van Gogh owes his fame to his brother's wife!
We live today in an era in which everybody has the opportunity to be heard and loved. There was no internet at the time of Lili Boulanger. I suspect, were it not for the fame of her sister, I wouldn't have discovered her or her story and music.

After working a redonkulously long number of hours exercising my fingers and brain, I decided to take a nice walk--you know, to be healthy.
I walked to the drug store to get something for my staff--you know, 'cause I'm cool like that.
Walgreens forced me to walk down the seasonal aisle, against my will, and purchase 90% off Easter candy, using its secret weapon (psychology).
As I made my way home on my healthy walk, I was forced to eat what may be in the top 10 of the worst Easter candy ever made in the entire multiverse since the beginning of time (and by that, I mean 7001 years ago).
The first one had a layer of pink flavored goo topped with white Crayolas mixed with sugar. Not satisfying.
So obviously I had to have another one to satisfy myself, under extreme duress. Blue topping and Crayola. hmmm, Boo-Berry. Worst berry flavor ever.
Green. No. Just no. Fake mint when my taste buds are expecting lime is just mean. It was like Listerine, a crayon, and a cup of corn syrup, all in the same mouthful.
Purple. I think there was a generic grape soda in the 1970s that tasted similar, when warm, flat and eaten with a crayon.
My tongue started to tingle and I thought it was swelling up a little.
.
.
.

So of course I had another one immediately. Anaphylaxis is for wusses.
Lemon. Jackpot! It tasted like lemon with a bag of sugar and a crayon.
When I was a teenaged jw, I found out that stores sell holiday candy at clearance prices, and WE WERE ALLOWED TO HAVE THEM. That's right! If you have it on Easter day or before--->Satan is happy. If you have it the day after--->you get a sugar high while believing the candy tastes better than it really does, chasing the satisfaction of something taboo.

part of hassan's interview: "a lot of the older cults that have been around for a really long time, like the jehovah’s witnesses, for example, and even the mormons, are having a really hard time with young people growing up in the age of the internet, because they’ve been basically telling lies to their followers about their history, and now people can easily find out what’s true and not true, and look at their own literature and copies of their own literature.

The Remarkable Story of Lili Boulanger

_____________the remarkable story of lili boulanger____________.

there are stories that cannot be written and shouldn't be told because the truth of those stories cannot be embraced on first hearing.

this is the life of a real person who appeared and vanished as though only dreamed up by an overly emotional writer.. lili boulanger was born to a father 77 years old, yet they formed an adoring bond almost from the moment she drew her first breath!

This was a comment I made from another post, but I would like to hear some people discuss this.
I know the social justice warriors will scream I'm some sort of trump supporter for what I say even though I don't agree with his ideas and no I am not voting for him... I accept this is a go to for them.
I think we have fallen into a PC vacuum.
Criticizing someones religion = racism!
Telling someone to not be so sensitive = misogyny!
Calling someone out on BS = "rabid attack!"
and on and on
What is going on? I would hate to be a stand up comedian in this day and age.
For some of the new folks and even old that are EXJW, you left a world that reinforced your beliefs systematically, and people were forced to be censored. The real world is not like that. Life is not a discussion board with a moderator looking out that everyone treats you nicely and reinforces your beliefs.
In another post I defended someone I often disagree with and don't like very much because someone suggested they didn't like the way he expressed himself because it offended them. This site belongs to Simon and he can do whatever he wants, he can kick anyone out of the party and set the rules, that's cool. But the hair trigger sensitivity of many on here is extreme! I don't know if its just the way the world is now (PC vacuum), or if its an EXJW thing expecting to re-find their Utopian group. Just something to think about.
Be careful you all don't censor yourselves out of reality. In the mean time I am just here like...

Just for the record, I know there are lines that can be crosses, but lately I feel they are blurred and hurt feelings are being mixed up with social injustice.

There s a difference between being overly PC and people using the claim of it to justify obnoxious behaviour.
Language and comments have to fit the occasion. Should people be able to swear and tell dirty jokes? Shouldn't it depend *where*?
◦Basement with friends
◦Starbucks
◦Someone's wedding.

If you think they are all the same / identical and fall for the claims of censorship because you can't see the difference then there is no point discussing it any further.,

I'm not speaking about sexual/inappropriate posts, or profanity as much as everyone feeling like they can pull things that are not so bad, into the realm of things that are bad and confuse them.
For instance screaming someone is racist for criticizing religion. ANY religion.

To nobody in particular, I say:
Let's face it, Topics containing controversy seldom bring out a well-reasoned, insult-free discussion free of pejoratives and Ad Hominem.
I suspect it may sometimes be due to an inability to articulate the sense of what you're trying to get across.
This is especially frustrating when the person you are addressing simply will NOT take a moment to listen.

But, isn't there a significant difference between saying, "I disagree with you" and saying "You ignorant a-hole, you're completely full of sh** and I hope you die soon"?
The anonymity of the Web bolsters a coward's courage.
Trolls and other catfish get their jollies by teasing a negative vibe out of a subject and spotlighting an individual for a pounding.

In the almost 12 years I've been on this Board, I've only tangled with about 4 posters with venom dripping from their yellow fangs

When I'm feeling good, I ignore them. If I'm depressed or in a bad mood I might engage them. But--guess what? It is NEVER a good idea to engage a bully or psychopath.
The best place to settle differences is PRIVATELY one on one using the Personal Message.
Guess what? Narcissists won't do that because they like to show off and drain away the dignity and respect necessary to actually settle things, and they get off on negative energy.

I'm still learning to bite my tongue and avoid controversy.
Being negative and personal is a sickness in Society. I've never seen it worse than it is right now.

Here's how it works:
If you don't exactly agree with me, then you are a worthless idiot. I'm going to publicly humiliate you!
That's not much of an argument!
_______________________________
Nobody can blame you for wanting to have a say your way. That's normal. If more than one person complains about HOW you have your say--well, what can it hurt to reflect on the critique and grab a handful of self-awareness?
Humility is the scarcest virtue there is. I know I hope to have a little some day myself.
I enjoy opinions and insights and feel bad when any of us is in an aggrieved state of mind. It will all blow over and be forgotten sooner than you think.

I'm pretty certain, this too shall pass.

And I'm a Brooklyn boy, I'm not for everyone
If someone calls me an idiot (ESPECIALLY on the internet) I promise I am not going to lose sleep over it, or even get that mad. I will probably laugh. Today I just saw some lets call it fragility, and I wonder if we try to keep fitting reality into the JW mold.

I think we have fallen into a PC vacuum.
Opposing sides of an issue make claim to the politically "correct cliché". Those who complain about PC the most are those who practice it the most within their own culture.
As an example: Those who are pro-gun but believe in a background checks and no open carry. They'll quickly be blasted by the "politically correct" - NRA style - gun owners for not being sufficiently pro-gun.
Criticizing someones religion = racism!
My issue is not with criticizing other religions such as Islam but in the fact that those who criticize it the most, like fundamentalist Christians, are hypocrites who cannot smell the stench of their own religion and scriptures.
Telling someone to not be so sensitive = misogyny!
Trump is disrespectful of women. That should be obvious to anyone who's been awake for the past several months.
Calling someone out on BS = "rabid attack!"
That's what Republicans/Fundamentalist Christians do when the mildest criticism gently wafts their way. The word that Fundies use is "persecution".

Yes! Good point!
I think freedom of expression is much more important that political correctness and respectfulness..
Simon gave some levels of freedom of expression:
◦Basement with friends
◦Starbucks
◦Someone's wedding.

This is an anonymous bord....of course we shuld feel much more free here than in the basement with friends.. Sometimes I wonder why americans are so afriaid of sexual explicit stories and sexual explicit jokes. Probably is making rude sexual jokes the most important sign of a really liberated mind (among people that used to be religios)
And yes..already the french philosphers from the 17th and 18th century stated that the best way to deal with religion and religious people is by ridicule..

What does what I said have to do with trump lol!? Trump is the king of misogyny, no doubt. I'm talking about the thin skinned majority on this DB that seem so quick to make these claims about anyone not sharing their views. I'm not even talking about politics. I'm just talking about crying foul when there isn't one. The hyper PC sensitivity can actually take weight away from things like racism, rabbid attacks/bullying, misogyny, etc when you make EVERYTHING one of those things. That is my point

A good rule of thumb I try to use is... attack the post not the poster.
Seems like debate is healthy but once a post starts calling someone names even calling them sensitive it becomes perceived as personal. But thats just my thought.

I hate all this PC stuff. Emery college students are traumatized by seeing the name TRUMP written in chalk.
I feel sorry for the young people growing up today, what a bunch of wimps.
Granted, Trump sounds more like a few bar owners I've known through the years, than a presidential candidate, but get a grip people.

You mentioned trump in about the second sentence...if your post was specifically about this board say so...you made it sound like a general observation on modern life....
Not an observation about a nasty and prolonged series of attacks on one person, on one thread on this board.

It does seem as though people do get their feelings hurt easily. The problem for me is that some people ( not referring to anyone specifically) are very very sensitive and then expect the rest of the world to change to sooth their insecurities.
i got over that fairly quickly after leaving the JW's where you are practically taught to be offended by everything. As a woman working in a male dominated field a thick skin is required, no one is going to coddle me.
Besides if no one challenges my beliefs how will I grow and learn?

I think what needs to be kept in mind that PC has a time and a place and as long as you know your audience you should be able to put words that fit the audience. Transmits your message with firmness without offending anyone who joins.
Basically, this time and age and the topics discussed in open forums like these, require not so much the writer to be careful (respect is never out of the question) but the reader to be even more careful. Had certain conversations happened behind closed doors or in close groups, no one would have feel ofended. In other words, people have not really changed and become more sensitive. We have become more open about our thoughts and belief.
The issue arises when someone enters discussion that is, by nature, controversial to their own beliefs and the feel that just because it is open, they can go in and trash the discussion. They feel they can go in there and demand sensibility towards themselves or attempt to tell others they are idiots because they don't share the same view. The solution in my view is simple. Stay out of topics you don't agree with and ask that people stay out of yours if they don't agree with you.

After all, it's CLEAR that they are not convenient (no trap door), and merely a *fashion statement*, and therefore frivolous. How DARE I start a thread about overalls, when everyone KNOWS that slacks are better? What an idiot I can be sometimes. SMDH :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

For instance screaming someone is racist for criticizing religion - this unfortunately happens out in the real world but this site's owner and most posters don't do this here.
The WT religion is rightly criticised, torn to shreds, and shown up for what it is. Islam regularly gets criticised and questioned - a few posters have shamelessly played the racism card there but they're usually ignored or their arguments are ripped to shreds.
Thankfully, this forum is a place of intelligent discussion and robust argument.
I think this 'PC problem' is a much bigger problem out in the real world, especially among UK and EU politicians.

LUHE
Thankfully, this forum is a place of intelligent discussion and robust argument.
it is, as you and i have seen together a few times and that is what I love. A debate that gets intense but every one can still joke and be normal afterwords without taking differences of opinion as offensive. My point with this OP is too many people feel abused in a disagreement type of situation. People can be "mean":
1.Intentionally to belittle someone
2.Some aren't really trying to attack the person but the issue
3.Sometimes people are even trying to attack anything

Still people cry foul. I am not talking about giving people the license to be bullies, but more to the people who feel bullied over EVERYTHING that they need to toughin up, just a bit at least.
If someone is intentionally attacking you, laugh at them, or ignore them, you then have completely disarmed them. If they aren't really attacking you personally but an issue give your opinion but don't say how they are ruining your life because they disagree with you (maybe even sharply).
I used the trump example because in the past I have seen this as an insult thrown at someone. (maybe he will be the new Godwin's nazi/hitler lol).
Having people with different opinions should be celebrated not cried about. no matter what I say on here I know and expect people not to agree, and even if they stoop to calling me names, I am still not going to whine about it, its just the internet after.

Darkmatter did a great job summarizing it.. much better than I can

Can Jeffery talk God out of being an SJW, or will SJWs themselves make God realize what a carcinogenic ideology they espouse? Perhaps actions will speak louder than words. I understand that I'll probably get a lot of shit for this video, and to those of you who disagree, please try to refrain from a typical unthinking Pavlovian response to my use of the dreaded SJW "buzzword" (or "bellword" as it were). Social justice has been bastardized into the new creationism. In its name, people have been supporting unsubstantiated belief and suspicion over evidence. Concepts that were once clear and valid, like safe spaces, triggers, privilege, racism, and sexism, have had their meanings altered to the point of deception through the repeated abuse and misuse of the terminology until it succumbs to utter triviality at best, downright divisiveness at worst, and ultimately exemplifies the ironic justification of blatant bigotry through collectivist ideals that strive to supplant perceived supremacy with intentional supremacy and authoritarianism. "...but, but, but, DarkMatter, why would you be against equality?!" Yeah right. Beware of those who co-opt virtuous language to suit their nefarious deeds. Such hypocrisy is abhorrent to me, so I reserve the right to speak about it. If you care about equality, as I do, then you'll reject its misuse as a term.
I would also caution against falling into similar tactics through the overuse/misuse of terms like "SJW" and "regressive" which are terms that can certainly be valid, but shouldn't be applied to people who do not manufacture controversy and are sincerely trying to fight actual injustices, like real racism and real sexism, with no thought of using such battles solely to elevate their status. Overusing and misapplying those terms is little different than calling everyone racist and sexist at the drop of a hat.

Ditto Free Mind Fade. And Talesin, spot on.
I've tried being a member of the Decorum Faction, but time after time I've failed. But I also don't fit into the Dauntless, Amity, Erudite, Abnegation, and Candor Factions.
As Tobias (Four) said in Divergent. "I think we've made a mistake. We've all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own. I don't want to do that. I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest. I continually struggle with kindness."
I'm all for decorum. Except when I'm not. But the Nattering Nannies of Niceties won't have it any other way it seems. They can't get their way by using the "Dislike" button, because some of us don't care and some of us are trying to get their reaction with as many "Dislikes" as possible. So they rat us out to Simon, who occasionally has used a well placed and perfect for the occasion F word himself. Though it isn't often.

It's like SSC said in the weight loss OP that probably contributed to this yet another calling out by our wonderful site master Simon. And when I say contributed, I mean me. My knuckles have been rapped so often they are red. Adults don't change their bad habits or their minds unless they are publicly ridiculed, similar to banning smoking in public and treating smokers as pariahs, or they are financially or otherwise penalized. It's kind of like weight training.

No pain. No gain.

And as Cofty says, for all you Hovering Hens of Hysteria, four steps over and five steps down is the Dislike button.

Hi it has been a while since I posted. Sorry this is a rant.
To be honest I have been on a journey - nearly faded but I won't elaborate until I can.
I just watched April's broadcast.
Since when do we have "hollywood" style movie previews? Such fear mongering also!
I noticed a few things there are probably more:
◦They are talking about "looking forward" not behind. Look behind and you will die is the message - which is great for them because if people look back they will realise how false this thing is.
◦Shameless promotion to children about going to bethel. Honestly, let's now put pressure on all of the people you are fleecing and keeping poor to take their family to Bethel. The film looked like a advert to a fun park.
◦Song - will there ever be a song that praises God or Jesus (heaven forbid). They are all about praising themselves or some "lets do more" video. Let's keep the pace - honestly - how is this praise? Did David ever write about how great he was - nope his praise was not about cleaning up your bedroom but how great God is.

There are smarter people then me that will pick up all of the slight propaganda they use.
Thank you Fartful Slave - keep bringing the excrement for you show how shallow and "full of it" you are.
Ahh there - I feel better now.

Hi iwas blind! Thanks for that synopsis, I can not stomach anything from JW.Borg or the televangelist station, myself.
I hope your journey has been a beautiful one.

Your post peaked my interest. I put my vomit bag beside my computer and clicked on play. Now I want to rant too!!!!!
The first sentence was "Look back to learn. Look ahead to live." Then he talked about Jehovah telling us from BEHIND on how to walk....God almighty! You can tell how God isn't telling them how to walk, because the JW's are walking in a zig-zag direction. They don't know where to hell they are going! The end is here...no it's not...yes it is...this generation, no that generation. Give me a break!
Then they talk about only looking back to learn from past mistakes. God almighty! If we look back with eyes of reason, we realize we were duped!!!!!
"No one can deceive Jehovah" I want to scream out "Dumb-nuts listen to what you are saying....jerk!!!!'
I am with you about the video. I could have sworn I was looking at a Hallmark movie trailer. I have nothing against TV, but why are they spending all that cash on movie productions when they could be spending it assist the needy and infirmed? What about all those Bethelites that were booted out, without anything but a handshake? Even wordy companies give a stipend of some sort.... "Be warm and well fed" It's all about worshiping the cult. Where is the love??????

They're hoping to get more awards, even if they have to pay for them. Not only that, they couldn't possibly think of putting Caleb and Sophie out of a job.
