What's the point of debating?
In my opinion it's not to win the argument, but rather to present the evidence and let the audience/lurkers decide the best case. Therefore I thought maybe the best way to present our current beliefs would be to start a thread where only " Testimonies of former Christians" are permitted . However Christians are welcome to start a similar thread " Testimonies of why iam still a Christian". And of course atheists should not debate on that thread.
The Rebel.
p.s when time permits I will post my testimony.

As nobody seems to be biting on this thread, here is my testimony of why I beame an athiest. Well I have to be quick. Why? I am on lunch break......but the reason I am an athiest is because as an intelligent adult I realize what a load of old cobblers it is to believe in a paradise earth. Yet who knows? And yet -is it not foolish to cherish the fragrant innocence and joyful teachings of false beliefs when as an adult we can acknowledge those beliefs are without substance? Admittadly I had to come to this conclusion without " The Watchtower" denying me access to factual material that destroyed my faith. Maybe that's why " The Watchtower" say " Avoid independent thinking?

My pleasure Landy, and more to the point I hope this thread will become boaring without debate. Or more to the point I hope this thread is boaring and non confrontational, but if it needs a special committee to respect a posters O.P then so be it.

First I realized that the Society did not have the truth......... this would have been back in the early 1960's. I intuited this without research books nor an internet. I just felt the beliefs were wrong headed. Blood, Armageddon, you name it........ the beliefs over reached the supporting scripture's that were cherry picked out of the OT or NT. Also the theology was all so boring.
I came to realize later on that this was the writing style of one Freddy Franz. At Bethel it was called Freddie's calculus and often laughted about. I found it consistently off message and off puting. Left to himself Freddy pushed 1975 I was long out of it by then. Later I learned that Freddy was made President after Knorr fell ill. Your WTBTS in action.
It became just another blunder by the 'worlds fastest growing religion'
While I was losing my faith in the JW'S I wondered about Jesus and Jehovah. The two J's seemed out of sorts most of the time. My question was why would they have picked such a failure of a group as the WTBTS to be their one and only spokespersons?
So my wife and I left....... we were in our early 20's.
We cleaned house tossing out all of the WT literature including the bibles and did without for the next 50 years.
How did we fare? Quite nicely.
I am comfortable with a person who has a belief in a god and his son however I do not tolerate bending science to fit the genesis account or pretending Jesus was anything other then a man.
I understand the ignorance that drove religious belief in the 19th century but i never understood clinging to all of the misrepresented information that has and is to this day the motivation to believe in the folly of man made religions.
As I mentioned in another post....... one person's delusions are considered a mental health issue. A group of people with those same delusions is considered a religion.

You lucky b*st*rd!
It took us another 30+ years to awaken to TTATT! -- [Banging head against the wall to relieve the pain]
**************************************
As far as the OP, I would really like to say I am still a "believer", yet since learning TTATT and experiencing everything that I was told as a born-in being crashed to pieces, I have come to doubt everything. I really would prefer to believe that there is still some "master plan" from a "higher power" that will in the end, result in justice that corrects all the injustices in human history -- that all things will eventually be made "all right". But I need more evidence than just having "faith".
As Jerry McGuire would say: "Show me the 'money'!"
I need some real, solid evidence! (And please don't direct me to some "Jesus feeling" in my heart. I have learned that "the heart is treacherous".)

I know you aren't asking for opinions, but I just can't resist.
Dr. Jerry Bergman is the author of JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES AND THE PROBLEM OF MENTAL ILLNESS.
It does seem to be over $100 at Amazon.
I attended some sessions of BRCI in Illinois and Jerry Bergman spoke at one about how evolution is impossible. Rather than spend a whole thread telling you how much I disagreed with him, and why I wouldn't spend even $20 on a book written by him, this article can demonstrate what's wrong with his thinking:
http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Jerry_Bergman
To be fair, it seems that this book was written when Dr. Bergman was an active JW, and there might be other reasons beyond agreeing with him or enjoying his way of thinking that a person might want this book. But it does seem that Jerry has abandoned JW's without examining his deep-seated "Young-Earth-Creationist" beliefs.
Good luck to you.

Jerry Bergman's "research" on mental illness among Jehovah's Witnesses is quite possibly one of the shoddiest pieces of opinion masquerading as respectable "findings" that I have ever read. And I speak as an individual who has a double major in Sociology and Psychology, a Diploma in Clinical Psychology and a PhD.
Don't waste either your money or the paper.
There have been some excellent threads in this very forum on Bergman's (aka Montague's) "research".
BTW, I do not dispute that mental illness exists in JW ranks. My beef is entirely with Bergman's opinions on the topic.

Governing Body members
Current
The following people are members of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses[80] (year appointed in parentheses):
◦Samuel Herd (1999)[81]
◦Geoffrey Jackson (2005)[82]

Former
Prior to 1971, various Watch Tower Society directors were informally identified as members of the "governing body". Jehovah's Witnesses publications began capitalizing Governing Body as a proper noun in 1971; The Watchtower that year announced "The present Governing Body comprises eleven anointed witnesses of Jehovah." These eleven members are indicated in italics in the list below.[87][88] Years active are shown in parentheses. All members served until their deaths unless specified.
◦Thomas J. Sullivan (1932–1974)[89][90][91]
◦Grant Suiter (1938–1983)[92][93]
◦Nathan Homer Knorr (1940–1977)—4th President of Watch Tower Society[94][95]
◦Frederick William Franz (1944–1992)—5th President of Watch Tower Society[96][97]
◦Lyman Alexander Swingle (1945–2001)[98]
◦Milton George Henschel (1947–2003)—6th President of Watch Tower Society[89]
◦John O. Groh (1965–1975)[89]

◦William K. Jackson (1971–1981)[89]
◦William Lloyd Barry (1974–1999)[105][106]

Lösch was appointed in '94 making him the longest serving. Scroll down to 'Governing body members' section on the link.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governing_Body_of_Jehovah%27s_Witnesses
I don't know about Lösch being senior as GB members are supposed to be equal... or what info you're trying to get at but the money end is operated by the President of the 'Watchtower' (the President as of Adams appointment is now a non-GB position for the first time and that was made official off top of my head around 2000) and that is Don Alden Adams.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Alden_Adams
Edit: Interestingly, Don's brother is vice president on another arm of the Watchtower. I'm of the mind that any digging for treasures should be done on this side as opposed to the GB... I see the GB as the smokescreen. Watchtower/the money side is where it's gonna be at!

Interesting that since Jaracz's death, only one new member added (Sanderson),
I understand Jaracz was pretty much THE selection committee, or at least had the most influence.
I wonder how they determined, and who determined, that a 47 year old lifetime bachelor was the best choice in 2012?

Comment by David A. Reed on the FB page Cult Awareness Network:
Every church and apologetics ministry should be aware that the same state high court that first imposed gay marriage a decade ago heard arguments yesterday on a case that could result in shutting down churches across Massachusetts, by taxing their land and buildings--a move that could be followed by other states, just as in the case of gay marriage:

Religious tax exemptions on the line in SJC case
Bob McGovern Saturday, April 02, 2016
A blockbuster Supreme Judicial Court case involving an iconic Attleboro shrine could lead to property taxes on every church, synagogue and mosque in Massachusetts.
The case, slated to be heard Tuesday, stems from a decision by Attleboro officials to tax portions of the National Shrine of Our Lady of LaSalette for fiscal year 2013.
Tax assessors found that many buildings comprising LaSalette’s massive shrine — including a former convent, a maintenance shed and all of the land surrounding the buildings — were not exempt from taxation under a long-standing state law, according to court documents.
Attleboro’s argument relies on the interpretation of a portion of state law, known as “Clause Eleventh,” which specifically deals with tax exemptions and religious institutions. The city argues that all property in the Bay State should “bear its fair and proportionate tax burden, and that property owned by religious organizations not be singled out for benefits not afforded to other secular entities.”
Religious leaders, needless to say, are taking umbrage with that stance.
“I am concerned that an adverse ruling here could force houses of worship to close down,” said the Rev. Laura Everett, head of the Massachusetts Council of Churches. “It’s a pretty significant case. There is a lot on the line here.”
The city of Attleboro found that more than a third of the shrine’s property did not qualify for the religious tax exemption, and billed the church $92,292.98. The shrine fought the case all the way to the SJC, and nearly every religious sect in the state has filed amicus briefs in support.
“There are religious organizations across the commonwealth that depend on the exemption. If they are denied the exemption they risk not being able to maintain their property or stay in being,” said Heidi Nadel, an attorney who wrote on behalf of 12 religious organizations, ranging from the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center to the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
The Roman Catholic Church filed a separate brief pointing out that religious institutions could be forced to cut back on charitable services — activities that sometimes take place on property that may be deemed taxable.
“Religious institutions have long dedicated their resources and efforts to better our communities and the lives of all citizens in the Commonwealth,” attorney Felicia H. Ellsworth wrote in the brief.
“The General Court, like the legislature of every other state in the union, exempts religious institutions from taxation in recognition and appreciation of these important services.”
Attleboro’s attorneys, who declined to comment, argued in court that a tax exempt “house of religious worship” does not extend to the entire piece of property where it sits.
But an attorney for LaSalette said narrowing state law to fit that definition could have disastrous results. “Every community is trying to raise as much tax revenue as possible, but our position is that they stepped over the line and they are taxing things that are clearly part of the shrine religious worship mission,” said Diane C. Tillotson, the shrine’s attorney.
“It could be a huge financial hit,” she said, “and it’s not unique to one religion.”

As I understand it, the IRS revokes the charitable status of approximately 100 organizations in the US each year, for various violations.
To assume that religious institutions would be immune to this (including the WTS, who - arguably - have violated tax-exemption laws) would be naïve, IMO.

Exactly! Their exemption raises the taxes on all other citizens.
Bring it on!

Hi All,
This weeks Imitate Their Faith...So did anyone catch (if you are still attending the mid week meetings) para. 18, where Elijah says,1 Kings V.10 "I have been absolutely jealous for Jehovah the God of Armies; for the sons of Israel have left your covenant....)? The grey bible says, " I have been absolutely Zealous". The older NWT says, " I have been absolutely Jealous..." So which is it...I looked up both words...but they mean different things...Zealous means (overly)enthusiasm, & Jealous means a person who is overly possessive or envious of others (intolerant of others). He or she generally covets the possession of others....
So can you interchange these 2 words ?

CANTERBURY, England — More than half of the 5.4 million people living in Scotland have no religion, according to a survey published by Scottish Social Attitudes.
The 52% of unaffiliated Scots represents a 12% jump from 16 years ago, when 40% of survey respondents said they had no religious affiliation.
The proportion of people who say they belong to the Church of Scotland — the Presbyterian Church that for so long dominated almost every aspect of life in that country — has fallen dramatically, to just 20%, down from 39% of the population in 1999.
"The survey’s findings show that Scottish commitment to religion, both in terms of our willingness to say we belong to a religion and to attend religious services, is in decline," said Ian Montagu, a researcher at ScotCen Social research in Edinburgh, which runs the annual surveys.
Montagu added that the change doesn't appear to be affecting all religions equally.
"Affiliation with the Church of Scotland is in decline while levels of identification with other religions remains relatively unchanged," he said
After the Church of Scotland, the largest Christian group is the Roman Catholic Church. Its numbers have recently been boosted by an influx of people from the European Union, particularly Poland.
The 2015 survey interviewed 1,288 people between July 2015 and January 2016.
“We are developing fresh expressions of church alongside traditional forms in order to engage with people,” said Colin Sinclair, convener of the Church of Scotland’s Mission and Discipleship Council. “We have contacted those who have stopped attending church but want to hang on to their Christian faith. We want to hear their stories and understand the lessons we can learn from them.”

Not being affiliated with a religious denomination should not be interpreted to mean that such people are atheists or agnostics. Many of those self-identified non-religious people might still revere Jesus or be Deists.

They may not all become atheist right away but they're likely less dogmatic. It's also a lot easier to transition into atheism when you don't have the constant reinforcement of superstitions from going to church. Also, when you see church as a family thing or use it for social support you're less likely to reexamine your beliefs than you are if they're doing basically nothing for you.

scotsman : Scotland also has the "world's gayest parliament". I'm sure there's no correlation.
Therefore, assuming no other major religious organisation, and noting that membership of the Presbyterian church is ... (quote):
"The proportion of people who say they belong to the Church of Scotland — the Presbyterian Church that for so long dominated almost every aspect of life in that country — has fallen dramatically, to just 20%,"
the percentage of Scots people attending church on Sunday is likely to be around 2 or 3 %.
And assuming that the percentage of 'out' gay people in Scotland is around 5% of the population.
There will be more Scots people in a gay bar on Saturday night, than there will be Scots people in church on Sunday. Surely a 'sign of the approaching end,' (of the Jesus mob).

The radio station I hear here locally interviewed the father who with his wife participated in obtaining that billboard because their son & daughter are still in Scientology. .. the interesting part was that the father & Mother live in Florida, they were fading away from Scientology. .. when it got found out they weren't attending services any longer & drifted from the church, well it got reported back to church members & their adult children & family... now they are being shunned & seamed "supresive persons" ..he also mentioned that scientology recruit to indoctrinate kids as young as 10, was shocking to hear..... & so familiar as in the JWs!!

All things . . . that you want men to do to you, you also must do to them (but we protect pedophiles).—Matt. 7:12.
What are some ways in which we follow the Golden Rule in our ministry? We treat each householder as an individual (who would die at Armageddon if they do not listen to our message). We show respect for the householder’s home and other property (especially those homes we would like to have for ourselves if they are destroyed at Armageddon). We endeavor to participate in the ministry at times when householders are most likely to be at home and receptive (or if they are not at home & not receptive by means of our literature carts!). And we introduce our message in a way that is well-received in the local territory (a disguised version of "Listen to us or you would die at Armageddon!"). Many benefits come from treating those in our territory as we would like to be treated (we don't like strangers knocking on our doors & pushing their beliefs on us, by the way). By acting in a kind and considerate manner, we are letting our light shine, are underscoring the value of Scriptural principles, and are giving glory to our heavenly Father (who guides us by means of 7 old men at New York). (Matt. 5:16) We may attract more people to the truth by the way we approach them (as evidenced by the phenomenal increase in our yearbook's publisher statistics this year!). (1 Tim. 4:16) Whether those to whom we preach accept the Kingdom message or not, we have the satisfaction of knowing that we are doing our best to accomplish our ministry (we will have the satisfaction of seeing all you worldly people perish at Armageddon!).—2 Tim. 4:5. w14 5/15 2:17, 18

Yes... the irony here is that JW's claim to follow Matt 7:12, but usually FAIL to do so in the most basic of ways! Take a closer look at their actions & it would be obvious that they do not practise what they preach!

Hi everyone,
This is directed to people in the UK, particularly from the South. I heard of an experience of an elder in Farnborough who was well known in the congregation, but faded away after the new generation teaching was introduced. I never met him, but apparently he had a few bob about him and was high up in some financial institution. Does anyone have any further info about him? I want to find out if he was just stumbled or actually knew TTATT.

Haha, fair enough! It's the most recent one, the one and only overlapping generations! I think he started to fade shortly after it was announced at the 2012(?) convention.

what's the point of debating?.
in my opinion it's not to win the argument, but rather to present the evidence and let the audience/lurkers decide the best case.
therefore i thought maybe the best way to present our current beliefs would be to start a thread where only " testimonies of former christians" are permitted .

The YHWH/JESUS INTELLIGENT DESIGN STUDIO's Penis Designs

there are many things to question about the intelligence of the designs emanating from the yhwh/jesus intelligent design studio.. lauren reid, a phd candidate at durham university, writing in 'the conversation,' takes a look at why humans and spider monkeys are the only primates without a bone in their penises.
most mammals have such a bone, which is called a baculum .
humans don't, in spite of the term 'boner,' being in common usage, though whales, horses, rhinos, rabbits, elephants, marsupials and hyenas, were also designed without such a bone.. how does a baculum work?

They used to let bro's and sis's do the sample presentation and give them the leeway to put it in their own words thereby making it more natural. Not so anymore! These days the sample presentations are beamed from mother website.
They seem to have been written by someone who has no experience of how people talk in real life. The wording is strange and weird? If I was a householder and heard this it would be sounding major alarm bells for me. It makes the jw sound like a bizzare brain washed cult member! Seriously do the GB really think that this will help?!
And of course the householder is always so interested!! And always asks the right questions (!) Which never happens in real life either. I was looking around the hall as it was being shown and it was quite clear that not even the audience in the hall found the presentation interesting!
Does anyone else think that these presentation ideas are bizzare? I guess it's for the best in a way, the more weird a jw sounds on the doorstep the more likely the householder will be to tell the where to go.
sir82
sir82 23 minutes ago
I agree - no human being that I know talks the way that the shadows in those video presentations do.
That's what happens when people live in a compound isolated from the real world. They write stuff that has virtually no connection to reality.
Just wait until they move to Warwick later this year. WT content will seem to have been written by chatbots.

Dear sisters,
When you are fortunate enough to be in the presence of a jw penis you must take care to show the proper respect for it! Doesn't matter if said penis is prepubescent! No no! You are a lowly female and therefore must wear a head covering to show respect to the penis. All hail the mighty penis! Doesn't matter if your Bible study is going to think you are utterly nuts and a throw back to the dark ages when you get out your headscarf and wind it round your head. Showing deference to the penis is more important than not scaring off your Bible study! How happy you are dear sisters to have the opportunity to show respect to the penis of your brothers!
Sincerely, the Borg (the most important penis of them all)
... Anyway that was the gist of the talk last night, I got the distinct impression that even the brother giving the talk was uncomfortable with the subject matter. None of the sisters looked happy either. I was fighting off an urge to stand up and start screaming! I wonder how many other sisters were too?

dear sisters,.
when you are fortunate enough to be in the presence of a jw penis you must take care to show the proper respect for it!
doesn't matter if said penis is prepubescent!

Lame and werid sample presentations at the meeting

they used to let bro's and sis's do the sample presentation and give them the leeway to put it in their own words thereby making it more natural.
not so anymore!
these days the sample presentations are beamed from mother website.. they seem to have been written by someone who has no experience of how people talk in real life.

after working a redonkulously long number of hours exercising my fingers and brain, i decided to take a nice walk--you know, to be healthy.i walked to the drug store to get something for my staff--you know, 'cause i'm cool like that.walgreens forced me to walk down the seasonal aisle, against my will, and purchase 90% off easter candy, using its secret weapon (psychology).as i made my way home on my healthy walk, i was forced to eat what may be in the top 10 of the worst easter candy ever made in the entire multiverse since the beginning of time (and by that, i mean 7001 years ago).the first one had a layer of pink flavored goo topped with white crayolas mixed with sugar.
not satisfying.so obviously i had to have another one to satisfy myself, under extreme duress.
blue topping and crayola.

The YHWH/JESUS INTELLIGENT DESIGN STUDIO's Penis Designs

there are many things to question about the intelligence of the designs emanating from the yhwh/jesus intelligent design studio.. lauren reid, a phd candidate at durham university, writing in 'the conversation,' takes a look at why humans and spider monkeys are the only primates without a bone in their penises.
most mammals have such a bone, which is called a baculum .
humans don't, in spite of the term 'boner,' being in common usage, though whales, horses, rhinos, rabbits, elephants, marsupials and hyenas, were also designed without such a bone.. how does a baculum work?

our last conversation was him yelling at me because i "loved the gays".

i've been shunned since daing last september, and really for a year or so after visiting my df'ed brother.

the path fact-checked: the ugly truth behind real-life cults .
part of hassan's interview: "a lot of the older cults that have been around for a really long time, like the jehovah’s witnesses, for example, and even the mormons, are having a really hard time with young people growing up in the age of the internet, because they’ve been basically telling lies to their followers about their history, and now people can easily find out what’s true and not true, and look at their own literature and copies of their own literature.
