July 1, 1974, when I bought my home, I couldn't sign ... my Dad signed for me.
Oct. 08, 1979, The first conviction; "According to the old common-law rule, a man who forces his wife to have sexual intercourse with him cannot be convicted of rape. The celebrated Rideout case in Salem, Ore., late last year resulted in the acquittal of Husband John accused of rape by his wife Greta. Attitudes are changing, however. Last week, in another Salem, in Massachusetts, James K. Chretien was convicted of raping his estranged wife Carmelina. He is believed to be the first American ever convicted of wife rape.
Law: Wife Rape
We have made great progress in the past 40 years; however, there are many social problems that need to be corrected. Expecting time to heal all ills is a waste. Face the issues head on, prepare for the criticism, blaming and threats. Those who want justice must forego peace to get justice. Hopefully, our great aspirations will be matched with our laws and customs.
Same sex marriage is right on top of the list, along with woman's right to control her own body without interference from religious or politicians making medical decisions without the consult of woman, her doctor and her spiritual counselor.

SB, I've said it many times: they want the right to be bigoted, the right to discriminate, and to use their holy book as justification.  This is what happens when E pluribus unum is replaced with "In God We Trust."  They don't care the "pluribus;"  they just care about the "unum."

GC, I think it's clear to everyone, those laws are just another way to protect prejudice and enshrine discrimination into law. Arguments to the contrary are disingenuous. Using the language they describe, a doctor with "sincerely held" anti-muslim belief could refuse care to a muslim, a catholic nurse could refuse care to baptists, and people could just as well refuse any service - hotel, restaurant, medical, making a sandwich to interracial couples.
So what are the laws about? Republicans using jingoism and scapegoating to further us/them dichotomies and garner political gain.

And if the teabaggers ever get complete control, the sign will also read, "NO (approved) God, No Service," too.

Jen Sorensen's comic on so-called "Religious Freedom" bills (as discussed in "Theism, Deism...")
"Funny how the concept of 'freedom' applies to business owners but not customers..."
FREE TO CHEW: Some conservatives would allow businesses to refuse service on grounds of 'religious freedom.' (Door sign: 'No shoes, no shirt, no heterosexuality, no service') Funny how the concept of 'freedom' applies to business owners but not customers... [short-haired, flannel-shirt-wearing butch woman holding hands with her partner] 'I just want the freedom to get a @#!* sandwich.' ... or birth-control-needing employees. [woman at computer in office] 'It is my sincerely-held belief that my ovulation cycle should be free from my boss's pre-enlightenment worldview.' Maybe these laws should be the other way around. [Not-Gay Donuts shop with boarded window: 'CLOSED for violations of human dignity', man pointing] 'No respect, no tolerance, no business!'

Chrissie, thanks for your reply.  You certainly have lived an interesting life, in many ways.  I can't imagine the mental anguish of having a physical body that doesn't correspond to what your mind is telling you.  I'm glad you're finally in a situation these days where you can feel comfortable.
You sound like an extremely strong-willed person, and I admire you for what you have overcome and accomplished.  As you mentioned in your post below, many people in your situation choose to prematurely end their lives.  It breaks my heart that society can drive us to such extremes.
Thanks again for participating in the discussions here.  I have to admit, it would be an honor to sit down and chat with you.  --Carl

  1. Mark Pinsky is a religous journalist and explores moral and religious themes
in popular Disney films ( such themes don't seem to be intended by the films creators, so is he looking for religious themes that are not intended to be in such films, in order to justify his own views or whatever he thinks he is doing?), yet his view of " Atlantis: The Lost Empire" is that the film
is a "devastating and unrelenting attack" on capitalism and American imperialism. Um... isn't this more of an economic and political view than a religious or moral view? By the way, morality and organized religion are not the same thing.
