Grizzly Man is a 2005 documentary film by German director Werner Herzog. It chronicles the life and death of bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell. The film consists of Treadwell's own footage of his interactions with grizzly bears before he and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed and eaten by a bear in 2003, and of interviews with people who knew or were involved with Treadwell. The footage he shot was later found, and the final film was co-produced by Discovery Docs, the Discovery Channel's theatrical documentary unit, and Lions Gate Entertainment. The film's soundtrack is by British singer songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson.

Production[edit]
Timothy Treadwell spent 13 summers in Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Over time, he believed the bears trusted him and would allow him to approach them; sometimes he would even touch them. Treadwell was repeatedly warned by park officials that his interaction with the bears was unsafe to both him and to the bears. "At best, he's misguided," Deb Liggett, superintendent at Katmai and Lake Clark national parks, told the Anchorage Daily News in 2001. "At worst, he's dangerous. If Timothy models unsafe behavior, that ultimately puts bears and other visitors at risk." Treadwell filmed his exploits, and used the films to raise public awareness of the problems faced by bears in North America. In 2003, at the end of his 13th visit, he and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were attacked, killed, and partially eaten by a bear; the events which led to the attack are unknown.
In order for this film to be produced, it was necessary for Jewel Palovak, co-founder of Grizzly People and close friend of Treadwell’s, to approve the production of the documentary. Logistical as well as sentimental factors needed to be taken into account regarding the footage. Grizzly People is a “grassroots organization,” concerned with the treatment of bears, that Palovak and Treadwell started together. After his death, Palovak was left with control of Grizzly People and all 100 hours of archival footage. As Treadwell's close friend, ex-girlfriend and confidante, she also had a large emotional stake in the production. Palovak had known Treadwell since 1985 and felt a deep sense of responsibility to her late friend and his legacy. He had often discussed the subject of his video archives with her. "Timothy was very dramatic," she once said. She quoted Treadwell as saying, "'If I die, if something happens to me, make that movie. You make it. You show ’em.' I thought that Werner Herzog could definitely do that."[1][2]
Synopsis[edit]
For Grizzly Man, Herzog used sequences extracted from more than 100 hours of video footage shot by Treadwell during the last five years of his life and conducted interviews with Treadwell's family and friends, as well as bear and nature experts. Park rangers and bear experts give counterpoints to statements and actions by Treadwell, such as his repeated claims that he is defending the bears from poachers. Park rangers point out that, while the bears may be subject to habitat loss and climate change, etc., there was never a recorded incident of poaching at this national park. Treadwell had also convinced himself that he had gained the trust of certain bears, enough to approach them and pet them like dogs. Park rangers again point out that bears are wild and potentially dangerous animals and that it was amazing that Treadwell survived as many years as he did without being mauled. One park ranger is astonished by Treadwell's actions, believing that the bears themselves were so confused by Treadwell's direct casual contact that they weren't quite sure how to react at first. Other park rangers point out that not only were the bears not under threat from any poachers, but Treadwell himself almost assuredly put the bears in danger: By familiarizing them with human contact, he increased the likelihood that they would approach human habitation looking for food, possibly resulting in a confrontation in which animal control would have to kill them. Ironically, if there were potential poachers, Treadwell's contact with the bears would have removed their fear of human contact, meaning they would not flee the hunters.
Herzog also narrates and offers his own interpretations of the events.
The audio recording of the fatal attack captured by Treadwell's video camera is not played in the film. Instead, Herzog is shown listening to it on earphones clearly disturbed. In fact, Herzog advises Palovak (the owner of the tape) to destroy it immediately rather than listen to it. He later repudiated his own advice, saying it was “Stupid... silly advice born out of the immediate shock of hearing—I mean, it’s the most terrifying thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Being shocked like that, I told her, ‘You should never listen to it, and you should rather destroy it. It should not be sitting on your shelf in your living room all the time.’ [But] she slept over it and decided to do something much wiser. She did not destroy it but separated herself from the tape, and she put it in a bank vault."[3]
Palovak later receives Treadwell's wristwatch from the coroner, who found it on Treadwell's arm, one of the few remaining pieces of his body. This same watch was spoken of earlier in the film by Willy Fulton, the pilot who discovered the bodies of Treadwell and his girlfriend. During the movie, he recalls seeing the lone arm with the wristwatch and not being able to keep the image out of his mind.
Exhibition[edit]
Grizzly Man premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and its limited US theater release began on August 12, 2005. It was later released on DVD in the United States on December 26, 2005.[4] The Discovery Channel aired Grizzly Man on television on February 3, 2006; its three-hour presentation of the film included a 30-minute companion special that delved deeper into Treadwell's relationship with the bears and addressed controversies surrounding the film. The DVD release of the film is missing an interview with Treadwell by David Letterman that was shown in the original theatrical release, where Letterman jokes that Treadwell will eventually be eaten by a bear. However, the versions televised on the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet both retain this scene.
Critical reception[edit]
Upon its North American theatrical release, Grizzly Man received almost universal acclaim amongst critics. The film has a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes[5] and placed at No. 94 on Slant Magazine's best 100 films of the 2000s.[6]
David Denby of The New Yorker said:

"Narrating in his extraordinary German-accented English, Herzog is fair-minded and properly respectful of Treadwell's manic self-invention. He even praises Treadwell as a good filmmaker: as Treadwell stands talking in the foreground of the frame, the bears play behind him or scoop up salmon in sparkling water; in other shots, a couple of foxes leap across the grass in the middle of a Treadwell monologue. The footage is full of stunning incidental beauties."[7]
Film critic Roger Ebert, a longtime supporter of Werner Herzog's work, awarded the film four stars.

"'I will protect these bears with my last breath', Treadwell says. After he and Amie become the first and only people to be killed by bears in the park, the bear that is guilty is shot dead. Treadwell's watch, still ticking, is found on his severed arm. I have a certain admiration for his courage, recklessness, idealism, whatever you want to call it, but here is a man who managed to get himself and his girlfriend eaten, and you know what? He deserves Werner Herzog."[8]
Charlie Russell, who studied bears for many years, lived with them and raised them for a decade in Kamchatka, and corresponded with Timothy Treadwell, wrote:[9]

"Herzog is a skillful filmmaker so a large percentage of those who watch the movie Grizzly Man, overlook Timothy's amazing way with animals even though to me this stands out very strongly. The fact that Timothy spent an incredible 35,000 hours, spanning 13 years, living with the bears in Katmai National Park, without any previous mishap, escapes people completely. Even with his city-kid background, I found myself mesmerized by what he could do with animals."[9]
However, Russell also says that he was baffled by Treadwell's "inane" behavior, and by his lack of proper preparation for bear attacks.[9]

Show format[edit]
Twelve dog groomers enter the competition in to the Dog House, where they must live and compete together. Every week there is a Quick Sniff Challenge, which involves the groomers doing a miscellaneous task which could be helpful to their grooming career. The winner of this challenge gets a Leg Up in the Elimination Challenge, a grooming challenge often related to the Quick Sniff Challenge. The winner of the Elimination Challenge gets a Leg Up for the next Quick Sniff Challenge (in season 1), and a groomer who performed below the standard for the competition is eliminated from the game.

^3 In episode 9 there was no Quick Sniff Challenge. Instead, the groomers had to groom dogs from The Lange Foundation dog shelter and adopt them out.
^4 Originally, the elimination challenge was to select one dog out of four from The Lange Foundation's Los Angeles dog shelter and adopt it out. The one that was last in finding a home for their dog would be sent home. After the adoption fair was over it was revealed that no one would be going home.
^5 Episode 12 was a recap episode, showing never before seen clips and catching up anyone who hadn't seen the season.

Challenges[edit]

Episode
Quick Sniff Challenge
Leg Up
Elimination Challenge
"Welcome to the Neighborhood" The groomers were separated into four teams of three. Each team had 30 minutes to find household items to groom their St. Bernard by asking people in the neighborhood. They then had one hour to groom the dog. The winning team was treated to a gourmet dinner while the other teams had leftovers from a doggie bag. The winning team also got 10 minutes to consult with the designer of the groom in the Elimination Challenge. The teams (the same as the Quick Sniff Challenge) assigned each member an attribute (either cleanliness, cut, or creativity). They then had to style a standard poodle in a unique way.
"What's Wrong With This Picture" The groomers used the same teams as "Welcome to the Neighborhood" (which resulted in a disadvantage for Jessica and Krista, as Micheal was eliminated) to identify safety hazards in a common grooming salon. The winning team first got to go indoor skydiving. In the Elimination Challenge, they had the advantage of choosing the dogs they would groom and distributing the other dogs to their competitors. Each groomer got a different type of dog, some being mixed-breed. The cuts were done to make the dogs more sanitary, especially as some dogs even had complications which prevented certain handling on them.
"Deep Breaths" Massage a dog to the greatest point of relaxation, using techniques such as aromatherapy and essential oils. Groomers separated themselves in teams of two before they knew the challenge. The two winners were able to go to a high quality spa for a day. They also received 3 minutes to consult with their clients midway through the groom to review progress and check customer satisfaction. Each grooming team, the same as the Quick Sniff Challenge, had perfectionist clients that were able to secretly view the groomers during the challenge to see if their unique requests were met.
"The Cutting Edge" In teams of three determined by the groomers before the challenge, the task was to design, create, and pitch a new invention that would be useful to solve everyday problems for an in-home groomer. The winning team got the reward to be in a photo shoot with Groomer to Groomer, a leading dog-grooming magazine. They were also allowed a five-minute consultation with an experienced vacuum clipper groomer. Individually each groomer must use a vacuum clipper to style a poodle mix. A vacuum clipper is an uncommon grooming tool that uses the suction of a vacuum as one of the main sources for canine hair removal.
"Tying the Knot" In teams of four, the groomers had to make top knots judged by the last winner, Artist Knox. The leader of the team got to switch anyone from either teams to the other. In teams of four, they had to groom the bride and groom of the first Groomer Has It wedding.
"Old Dog, New Tricks" The groomers are sent back to school, where they learn that they have to teach a group of children in fifth grade the basics of grooming. The winner was given immunity. The groomers must take a set of senior dogs and trim years off their appearance.
"Piggies" The groomers take their carefully culled canine clipping skills and use them to make over some filthy pot-bellied pigs. The winners got to take a training session in kickboxing. They also got to take away 15 minutes from a competitor of their choosing in the Elimination Challenge. The contestants deal with another heavyweight challenge – slimming down some overweight dogs using the techniques of anatomy grooming.
"Rescue Me" The groomers travel to a local animal shelter, where they lovingly transform a group of homeless dogs and present them in a special adoption fair. The winner received a visit from his best friend. The winner was also transported by vehicle to the salon, as all the others groomers had to walk. The groomers race to groom search and rescue dogs under the toughest conditions yet – no soap and no water.
"Look-alikes" The groomers take some Basset Hounds under their wing in an obedience training course. They then had to tell which was their dog in a mass of similar-looking canines. The winner got a makeover and was able to save one person from the bottom two, who would be swapped with someone else. The groomers are seeing double in their elimination challenge as they style dogs to look like their owners.
"Green on the Go" Grooming goes green as the contestants use electric clippers to shave down dogs - but only with the power from electricity-generating bikes. The winning team's leg up was that they received a packet back at the Dog House with pictures of their "clients" for the grooming challenge. The groomers take the show on he road, traveling to clients in state-of-the-art hybrid mobile grooming vans.
"Cut!" The groomers get their biggest taste of fame yet as they create grooming instruction videos. There was no leg up. The groomers face the toughest challenge yet – scissoring a set of show-quality Bichon Frisés to American Kennel Club breed standards.
"Finale" The groomers were tested in traditional elements of a show-dog competition after being taught by Xavier. The winner got to choose who got what dogs to groom in the finale. The groomers styled three rare dog breeds that were judged without the groomers revealing their dogs until the end.

Little did they know, they were getting much more than they bargained for. As they found a nameplate with "The Blakely Home" they tried to get more information about that building and they discovered that it was, from 1919 - 1950, an insane asylum. As they went in the basement they found some cages, big enough to hold dogs, cats or other animals of that size. They also found some photos where rats were being dissected on lab tables. Weeks later, one of the motion sensors went off but just the one in front of the solitary confinement cells. The police couldn't find anyone in or near that building.
Later two people started a candle-making business at a haunted building, where a doctor tested on primates. They remained in the shop and, as of 2011, are expanding to include a tour of the basement areas that were allegedly haunted.

Hillbilly Handfishin' is an American reality television show about noodling, the sport of fishing for catfish using only bare hands and feet. The series aired on Animal Planet from August 7, 2011 to August 5, 2012. The show stars Oklahoma fishermen Skipper Bivins and Trent Jackson, self-proclaimed "hillbillies" who take tourists from cities on noodling expeditions in muddy lakes, rivers and streams.[1][2] Hillbilly Handfishin' was developed by Sara Helman and produced by Half Yard Productions, the executive producers for which are Abby Greensfelder and Sean Gallagher.[1][3]
The Bivins family runs Big Fish Adventures, a noodling-exhibition company based in Temple, Oklahoma.[4][5] Among the participants will be a group of police officers from Chicago, outdoors-loving mothers from the Midwestern United States and a funeral director and his daughter.[4] Although officially set to premiere in August 2011, a pilot for the series first premiered on Animal Planet on September 24, 2010. At the time, it averaged 630,000 viewers, which was 44 percent better than the timeslot average at the time. Subsequent encores of the pilot on December 9 and December 22 drew viewerships of 653,000 and 722,000, respectively.[1]
Before the series premiered, Field & Stream magazine writer Chad Love criticized the premise and concept of the show, expressing particular concern that it would portray Oklahoma and its residents in a stereotypical and negative light. Love wrote, "Here's one from the 'Do We Really Need A Reality Show For This?' files."[6]
In episode 2 we feature 3 pairs including Tony and Nick, Italian guys from Chicago, Ken and his daughter Natalie, and finally retirees Valerie and John.[7] Episode 3 features the pairs of Hiliary and Kerry (a newlywed couple), Georgia friend Terisa and Tenia, and brothers-in-law Brad and Jim.[8]

Format[edit]
In each episode, people emailed Dr. Warren videos about the problems they had with their cats. Dr. Warren then (in seasons 1 and 2) consulted her colleagues and devised a plan of action. She then visited the people with cat problems at their homes, met their cats, discussed the problems, and offered solutions. She came back a few days later and checked to see if her suggestions worked. Usually they did, and the problems were solved. The show also contained a segment called "Dr. Kat's Corner" in which she gave general cat care advice.
Season 1[edit]
Season 1 aired from Saturday, June 7 to Saturday, July 12, 2008. In season 1, Dr. Warren was joined by Dr. Stacy Fuchino and Dr. Debra Horowitz.
Season 2[edit]
Season 2 aired from Saturday, June 6 to Saturday, July 11, 2009. It featured 2 new colleagues, Dr. Karen Sueda and Dr. Rich Goldstein. Some celebrities also appeared. The premiere featured actor Peter Weller. Another episode had radio host Kerri Kasem. Musician David Benoit appeared in the season finale.
Season 3[edit]
Season 3 no longer had the mentors and aired from Saturday, June 5 to Saturday, July 10, 2010. This season's celebrity appearances included rapper Kurupt and his daughter St. Louis Cardinals manager and Animal Rescue Foundation founder Tony La Russa, musician Michael Feinstein, and Carrie Ann Inaba of Dancing with the Stars fame.

Human Planet is an 8-part British television documentary series. It is produced by the BBC with co-production from Discovery and BBC Worldwide. It describes the human species and its relationship with the natural world by showing the remarkable ways humans have adapted to life in every environment on Earth.[1]
Announced in 2007,[2] the production teams based at the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol and BBC Wales spent three years shooting over 70 stories in some of the most remote locations on Earth spanning about 40 countries. Each episode of the series focuses on a different human-inhabited environment, including deserts, jungles, the Arctic, grasslands, rivers, mountains, oceans, and the urban landscape.
For the first time on a BBC landmark series the production had a dedicated stills photographer, Timothy Allen, who documented the project photographically for the books and multimedia that accompany the series.[1]
Human Planet was originally screened in the UK on BBC One each Thursday at 8pm over eight weeks, starting from 13 January 2011. Domestic repeats have been seen on Eden, with all 8 episodes aired over one week in April 2012.[3] BBC Worldwide has since announced they have sold the broadcast rights to 22 international markets.[4]
Human Planet was nominated for 7 BAFTA Television Craft awards, the most for any programme in 2011, and it won 2 of them, both for the Arctic episode, where Jason Savage won the factual editing prize, and Will Edwards, Doug Allan and Matt Norman won the photography (cinematography) prize.[5][6]

Beginnings[edit]
British born Victoria Stilwell was an actor who had built her sideline interest in dog training into a full-time business when she saw the first episode of Super Nanny and realised she was doing with dogs what Jo Frost was doing with children.[1] She contacted the producers of Super Nanny, British reality-show producers Ricochet Television, who responded immediately, and production began on It's Me or the Dog. Stilwell said her motivation was to "highlight positive training because there are so many dominance trainers out there messing it all up".[1] Stilwell acknowledges that training a dog on television is not the same as training without the cameras and crew.[2]
Format[edit]

This article needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (August 2012)
Most episodes begin with a brief interview with the dog owners on when they first met their dog(s) and how their ordeals began. Victoria observes the dog and owners in their home and in a range of situations. Once there's sufficient evidence of the bad behavior, she then spends two or more days teaching the owners how to create a better atmosphere for both dog and owner, and how to train specific behaviors. On occasion owners are taken to shelters or training centers to provide them with additional information. Victoria then leaves them to implement her training regimen on their own. After some time (usually several weeks), Victoria returns to evaluate how the dog and owner are progressing, and, when necessary, dispenses more training advice.[3] This format mirrors the format of Super Nanny.
US Season 3, filmed in New York, took a looser documentary format. Stilwell sometimes implements a technique as soon as she sees a behavior rather than waiting until after the Confrontation.
Series and success[edit]
There have been three US seasons and four UK series of It's Me or the Dog so far, the first running for six episodes from 31 August 2005, and earning record ratings for Channel 4. The second series aired from January - March 2006, running for twelve episodes. The third series transmitted from October to November 2006, and was eight episodes long, which included two hour long specials wrapped at each end; It's Me Or The Dog - The Event and It's Me Or The Fat Dog.[4] In 2007, a special one hour show at the Crufts Competition was shown on March 13, and a fourth series of six episodes aired in July and August.
Victoria Stilwell has also written two accompanying books, published by Harper Collins and titled It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet and Fat Dog Slim: How to Have a Healthy, Happy Pet..[5] The first book has also been published in the USA by Hyperion. Stilwell and her husband, Van Zeiler, have established a website titled Positively.com to raise awareness of the benefits of using humane training tools.,[1]
U.S. version[edit]
The show premiered on Animal Planet in the United States on April 16, 2007. In this version, the first season consists of various British families and their dogs (including the It's Me or the Fat Dog special) while the second season has American dog owners. Animal Planet's second season premiered in the fall of 2008.
In 2011, the show attempted a new direction with a New York theme which became US season three. US season 4, also filmed in New York, premiered on June 2, 2012. It included 10 episodes with one released each week. The show attempted a new direction where it focused more on the owners and their personality traits than on their pets. It included such episodes as 'The Castle Goes to the Dogs' with Matt Demar and Melissa Ballacchino, a former white-rapper whose clubs later came under investigation for drug sales and his then-girl-friend, and another where a German shepherd's owner taught his dog to bite trees.
While the show hasn't been officially cancelled, there is no discussion anywhere of it being continued, and it has been dropped in the UK from Channel 4

The Jeff Corwin Experience is an American television show about mostly tropical animals airing on the Animal Planet cable channel since 2001. It is hosted by actor and conservationist Jeff Corwin, who previously appeared in Going Wild With Jeff Corwin on the Disney Channel.
Overview[edit]
In its initial season, the program included a cobra festival in India, jungles in Thailand, Borneo and the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador in South America. The following year, the program featured Guyana, Australia and Tanzania. In its third season in 2005, Mexico and Peru were included, as well as Kenya and Uganda in Africa. While the program includes some North American settings, segments have included all the other continents except Antarctica.
The program has educational value, but is produced to entertain as well. Jeff is often bitten or nearly bitten by the animals being described. Jeff also enjoys making numerous jokes and references to pop culture and movies.
Corwin was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in public education from Bridgewater State College. He has long been a proponent of rain forest preservation. Programs such as this and those of Steve Irwin and Terri Irwin (of The Crocodile Hunter) reflect a "human coexistence with wildlife approach" which is in sharp conflict with poachers and past practices in many parts of the world.
