Reception[edit]
The program has received mixed reviews. The New York Times called it possibly "The most wholesome reality show on television right now," noting "it succeeds in being as entertaining as less-wholesome shows is a testament to the wry good humor and general niceness of its subjects".[2] The AV Club was less positive, with the reviewer saying that the show "will probably be a goldmine for [clip show program] The Soup" while noting that the program "was touching in ways I didn’t expect as well as disturbing in ways I didn’t expect".[9] A reviewer from the Arkansas Times was negative, saying that pet lovers will find that the show "is going to make you want to scream and jump backwards through a plate glass window", and that the reviewer "couldn't stop chuckling at some of the seemingly-heartwarming situations captured in the clips I saw".[10]

Animal Cops: Detroit is a one-hour American reality television series that premiered in 2002 on Animal Planet. It takes place in Detroit, Michigan, home of the Michigan Humane Society (MHS), and focuses on the exploits of five animal cruelty field agents and the staff physicians and animal evaluators at the MHS. The series is one of Animal Planet's top-rated shows; it is part of an "umbrella rotation" of shows known collectively as "Animal Planet Heroes".

History[edit]
The series premiered in 2002 and followed the cases investigated by a quartet of MHS cruelty investigators, Mark Ramos and Debby MacDonald (on the city's west side) and Shawn Hairston and Keven Jones (on the city's east side). Jones left the MHS during the show's first season and was replaced by former rescue driver Mike Dowe Jr., who became Hairston's partner. Another rescue driver, David McLeod, joined the team in 2004 as an investigator.
MHS Dispatcher Max Sharpe sometimes fills in for agents on rescue calls or goes out into the field when especially large teams are needed.
The hospital staff includes doctors Sherine Cece and Patricia Madsen, as well as evaluator Jan Ramos and several other technicians and evaluators.
Actor John Lurie narrated most of the early episodes. He has since been replaced by voice actor Rodd Houston beginning in 2004.
First-run production ended in 2006, though the show continues to be shown in reruns as part of the Animal Planet Heroes umbrella.
Awards[edit]
The show won "Outstanding Reality Program" at the 2003 Genesis Awards, an award show sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States that highlights media contributions to animal rights causes throughout the world. Investigator Shawn Hairston, accepting the award for his fellow investigators, told the audience that "We are warriors in this war against animal cruelty."[1]

Hurricane Katrina relief efforts[edit]
The Houston SPCA served as the coordinator of relief efforts for animals trapped in New Orleans, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Many of the animals rescued in New Orleans were shipped to Houston's holding facilities for eventual reunions with their owners who had also been evacuated to Houston. The rescue efforts were featured on a 2005 Animal Planet special called Animal Planet Heroes: Hurricane Rescues.
In the fall of 2005, the staff of the Houston SPCA also assisted with the rescue of animals from the wreckage caused by Hurricane Rita along the Texas Gulf Coast. Debby MacDonald and Mark Ramos, investigators with the Michigan Humane Society, featured in Animal Cops: Detroit, went down from Detroit, Michigan, to assist their fellow investigators in the recovery; their contributions were featured in a special episode of Animal Cops: Houston in 2006.

Overview[edit]
The show also features exotic wildlife rescues by the Everglades Outpost nature rehabilitation center. These rescues focus on wildlife, including large snakes, alligators and other reptiles, that either live naturally or are improperly released into the nearby Everglades. In addition, the series features the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department's Venom One unit. This specialized unit provides snake and other animal anti-venom to hospitals and is the only public anti-venom bank in the United States.
Comparisons to Miami Animal Police[edit]
See also: Miami Animal Police
The Miami-Dade Animal Services Department is currently the only agency in the Animal Planet Heroes rotation that has been featured in two different shows. Miami Animal Police, which premiered in 2004, also focused on Miami-Dade Amimal Services. While many of the on air staff were involved in both shows, there are several fundamental differences. The shows are produced by different production companies (Animal Cops: Miami is produced by Anglia Television, which produced the majority of the shows in the Animal Planet Heroes rotation. Miami Animal Police was produced by Lion Television). In addition, Miami Animal Police had no mention of the Venom One unit. The main difference, however, is that during the production of Miami Animal Police, the Animal Services Department was operated as a unit of the Miami-Dade Police Department and was known as the Animal Services Unit. The unit was separated from MDPD, hired a full-time director and became a stand alone county department in 2005. Animal Cops: Miami shows the work of the post-separation Animal Services Department.

The program follows the work of the seventeen emergency animal medical technicians employed by the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) in Phoenix, Arizona.
The AHS employs ten full-time veterinarians, most at their on-site hospital called "Second Chance." The AHS takes in more than 50,000 animals per year; 10,000 of these are rescued. During 2005, the AHS found homes for 18,028 companion animals in their work in preventing and prosecuting animal cruelty in Phoenix, Arizona.[1]

Animal Cops: South Africa is an American documentary reality television series that premiered on June 6, 2008 on Animal Planet. The program depicts cases that are handled and investigated by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in and around Cape Town, South Africa. They handle any animal from pit bulls to Egyptian geese.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is a community-run NGO and is a member of the NSPCA (National Council of SPCAs).
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA became part of the Animal Cops show after Animal Planet commissioned a South African version of the series, based on Animal Precinct, Animal Cops Houston, Animal Cops Detroit, and more.
The Inspectorate is based on a National Training program in South Africa provided and certified by the NSPCA and each inspector is authorized by the District Magistrates to investigate and intervene in animal cruelty complaints as well as educate on proactive initiatives. Their stance against animal cruelty has landed them the international focus with Animal Cops, highlighting the plight of animals within South Africa. All SPCAs are dependent solely on public donations, funding and receive no financial support from the South African Government, has no political ties and receives very little support from the national lottery.
