Hi Adam.....The only thing we have in common  is that we are both Atheists.....I am a Liberal Democrat....I believe in equal pay for equal rights, a woman's  right  to choose, Gay rights  including  Gay marriage...I would  like  to have  a single payer  health care  system but  the ACA  at least is a step in the right  direction...I am against Citizens  United, and  totally against  second  amendment  rights....I am for gun control...and against  open carry and totally against  anyone  owning a military  style  rifle with  large  clips..I do believe in freedom of speech, but  some take  advantage, and some limits  are needed... I believe  in separation  of church and state, which  is unfortunately  not being  enforced  today...I believe in freedom  of religion and  Non-Believers....but   not too crazy  about  Fundamentalists  of any  religion..I also  believe  everyone  has a right to vote no matter  what race  or ethnicity....I may have  left   some things  out  but  hope  you know  where I stand..........By the way...we have one more thing in common......I was born and raised  in Brockton,Ma.....just over the line  from South Easton....

I have seen very few people identify as conservative atheists. I personally am a liberal democrat, I'd write out my views on some of the major issues, but I'd just be copying @Freethinker.
I am curious though if you would view yourself as conservative on both social and economic issues or if your views are somewhat more mixed (as is the case with many other conservative atheists).
Diversity is great though. I can respect the fact that not everyone believes as I do, and I hope others can as well.

I could also just copy and paste everything that Freethinker mentioned, except for the Massachusetts part.

I'm curious, though, as to why you call yourself a "conservative." One of the definitions of "conservative" is "not liking or accepting changes or new ideas"—so the term "conservative atheist" almost sounds like an oxymoron. I'm guessing that the vast majority of the people on A/N would like to see quite a few changes in our society.

Liberal on social issues, and middle of the road / SLIGHTLY conservative on fiscal issues. Agree with a lot, but not everything, Freethinker31 said. As to free speech, there should be no limits  - period. Once you put limits on it, it's no longer "free." North Korea has free speech. You're free to say anything you want, so long as it agrees with someone else - in their case the party, the dictator and the government. It's that which is unpopular which needs to be protected the most. We make the mistake of silencing the KKK, and we're next.
As to gun control, it's an arbitrary decision that has to be made by someone. Everyone is in favor of limiting and controlling arms, in one way or another. Even the NRA. Most everyone would say anyone should be able to own a slingshot. Most everyone would be opposed to private ownership of a 50 kiloton plutonium atomic bomb. Somewhere between the 2, someone has to draw a line. Me, I happen to think rocket propelled grenades, howitzers,  Bradley tanks and 50 cal. machine guns in private hands are a bit much. Then again, that's just me.
I'm not a big fan of welfare, but before the left jumps down my throat, the overwhelming and vast majority of welfare which is handed out like candy on Halloween and which I am opposed to goes to corporations who have no need of it. Helping individual humans is fine - and yes, there are frauds who abuse the system and who should be busted and sent to the slammer. But the difference between someone living in a public housing project and scamming food stamps vs. a corporate CEO skimming hundreds of millions from middle class taxpayers is similar to a someone denying hitting a dog with their car to Pol Pot murdering millions. The two are simply not comparable. China seems to have a good solution for the latter; put them against a wall, give them a cigarette, and tell the squad, "Ready, Aim, Fire."
There's more to my curmudgeonly outlook on the world, but I've already taken up enough space.

There are some conservatives and libertarians on Nexus.  You are not the only one.  I'm not sure, but I think Br. Richard tends to be Libertarian.  More members are on the liberal side, I think.  I could be wrong and often am.

Freethinker spoke most of my philosophy, except I grew up in an entrenched, conservative and largely racist part of Missouri and Illinois.  I was military trained and had a university education in, mostly, science.  In many ways I am skeptical of academia and especially liberal arts.  On other topics I am autodidact.

I am usually vertical, on line.  I hope horizontal life suits you.  Regardless of differences, I hope you feel welcome and able to express yourself, and you are far from alone.

I personally find those that are opposed to gay marriage are generally against human freedom, and in favor of imposed social order from the top down.. Nothing personal, but it strikes me as completely bizzare. One would think expanding human freedom of expression and association would be a clarion call for conservatives, who openly tout freedom. Openly tout it, until it comes to putting their $$$ where their mouth is.
As I said. Nothing personal. I just don't get a position that claims to want human freedom in one breath, then actively denies it in the next.

I support people. Homosexuality is part of humanity and has been since time began. As long as everybody is treated equally I really don't care. Life is too short to argue about sexual preferences.

Openly tout it, until it comes to putting their $$$ where their mouth is.
As I said. Nothing personal. I just don't get a position that claims to want human freedom in one breath, then actively denies it in the next.
Notwithstanding my comments, welcome to A|N, and please feel free to completely disagree with me and tell me why I'm full of it. I honestly welcome it.

Liberal. I don't care about about others gods, sex lifes, or whatever else they choose to do. As long as they're not trying to force those beliefs on others.
I do care about the collective good of people and other living things.
Pat summed it up nicely for
 me.
My oldest gson is gay. He has as much right to wed and have children as anyone else. I thought only people who believe in the 'sin' of homosexuality felt they had the right to tell others who they could or couldn't love.
 I guess I was wrong.

I support people. Homosexuality is part of humanity and has been since time began. As long as everybody is treated equally I really don't care. Life is too short to argue about sexual preferences.

Interesting statement.

As long as everybody is treated equally I really don't care.

So, are you saying you support the right of homosexuals to marry, since that falls under the spectrum of being "treated equally"? Or are you contradicting yourself by saying that you support equal rights, but don't feel that homosexuals should have the right to be married?

Don't get me wrong—I'm not trying to start an argument or berate anyone for their stance on an issue. I am just interested in other people's perspectives, and how those perspectives developed. Not just on issues such as gay marriage, but also on preferences with regards to other issues, including politics, social trends, and even whether or not one should be allowed to put ketchup on a hot dog.

I strongly agree with Pat that people who are opposed to same-sex marriage also seem to be against human freedom, even though homophobes will deny it.
