So my daughter was love-bombed

The entire YW dropped by the other night to bring her a basket of candy and a card. I was out walking the dog and she opted not to open the door. Smart girl. They just left it on the doorstep.

She hated YW and only went once in a while for the last few months. We all officially quit the church at the end of December. So the new YW president has never even met her.

My daughter was annoyed by the whole thing and hoped it wouldn't make carpool awkward with the girl who is one of them. But she took the candy to school to share with her friends, including her best friend who still attends but refused to go to that activity. A few days later we were talking about how we're not mormon anymore, but we kind of are. She responded with, "Yeah, can we take care of that NOW, please?" She is now the one pushing for us to resign.

So I told my friend if she talked to the YW president to just let her know that the love bombing did not make her feel the love. She talked to her today.

The YW pres got defensive and said it was may daughter's choice how to take it. Then tried to say it was the other girls who wanted to do it. She sputtered for a bit, but ultimately thanked my friend for telling her because she wants to be "effective." My friend said my daughter is a bit shy and the pres just said, "Oh really? I've never met her." My friend really wanted to respond, "Um, doy? Maybe that's where you're going wrong? How about you meet the person before you try to convince them that you love them?"

We had been members of this ward for almost 14 years. My kids were all born and blessed and baptized here. And this new chick has the nerve to say it's up to my daughter how she takes it.

Grrr. It makes me wanna go all mama bear on her and tell her to stay away from my kid that she obviously doesn't even care about as anything other that a statistic to be dealt with. And then, you know, leave a bag of dog poop on her doorstep and tell her it's her choice how she takes it!

But if my savior comes could you let him know

One of the things I hated the most about the church was the "we love you" (even though we have never met you!) crap. I am glad to hear thought that your daughter has you to stand up for her. We had recently moved to a new ward, and my parents made it up to me if I wanted to attend the YW activities or not. We were obviously members, though I really didn't want to be. Church I didn't have a choice, but the extra activities I did. So I choose NOT to go! Well one night ALL the YW showed up to our doorstep to "invite" me to come and give me a ride, right then and there!! I was horrified and said I didn't want to go. My Mom (who would never dare make a scene) insisted that I go. It sucked, and wouldn't you know once we got there everyone formed into their cliches and I was pretty much all on my own the whole night. Which I honestly prefered, but the irony was not lost on me either!

Ha, +1 to leaving dog poop on their doorstep. Just do it with love and I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

I hate it when the YW would do that. The ward I grew up in was one of the rare wards where we didn't really do those "love bombings", but my family moved to a new area in my last year as a Laurel and the new ward had no problem with it. I only went to YW's a couple of times, but I seriously did not like them, and after I stopped going, they kept sending me those love packets. For my birthday once, they even gave me a hardcover BoM with a cute little "we miss you" message written inside the cover.

I too hate the whole "We Love you" crap.

Funny, you didn't love me before I left?

Ironic thing is, back when I was a younger teen I remember constantly love bombing girls who were inactive and such. . . .not once have they ever done so for me.

Where are my damn cookies!?

Sure ya'll love me. . . . you just loved the tithing money that popped out of my paycheck.

“I’m a Mormon” campaign in the UK

So it appears that starting April 8th the church launched a massive pubicity campaign in the UK. It's HUGE. A family member shared it with me since it features a cousin's wife.

As I watched this all I could think was, "This must be costing a fortune. Why are they wasting so much money on an advertising campaign instead of using it to do some good in the world?"

What I liked best was the reference to "...how fast the church is growing!!..."

When one logs onto mormon.org.uk, it doesn't really reach out and grab the viewer.  It comes across as passive.  You have to pick something that interests you and then engage with it.

Is it just me?  I have the impression that people who own computers, and use them with verve and dexterity, have a certain amount of momentum in their lives, and while they may be looking for a direction to head, not many think that a tiny multi-national corporation has the answer.

They've been running this here in the Seattle metro area for at least a year and online for longer than that. Whenever I look at the guy on the Harley with the beard, I'm like yeah right where did you find that guy, and I'm sure other members in his ward talk shit about him behind his back.

So, is the ad campaign the right approach to capitalise on the supposed surge in interest? Here’s what some people outside the station had to say.
“I think they’re just asking for a barrage of ridicule really,” one person says. “Maybe some people will phone and ask a serious question, but I can’t see many people asking a serious question, to be honest.”

Interesting that every single person asked had a positive response - even the one from Rome. I remember when it was bad and highly discouraged to call yourself a mormon. When did that change? Oh yeah when cult leadership realized that they might be able to capitalize on the name.

Thanks for posting this. The first video was made by the church, so of course it's all positive. I'm sure the reaction of most people in the UK is "WTF?"

Or, in a country where interest in religion has been in long decline, WGAF?
This seems like another case of Utah Mormons thinking the whole world is fascinated by them; another face of their narcissism.

That the church has to spend so much money, and so carefully script their awareness campaign, says how desperate they are. How I'd love to see the metrics on this campaign in the end, when they work how much much they paid per conversion, because that's the sort of hard nosed KPI the corporate jerks at the top are obsessed with.
How I hope they conclude putting their dollars througha shredder and flushing it down the can, would be as well spent.
We just need a rigorous You Tube campaign on the lies early Mormon leaders told in the UK about polygamy, whilst actively practising it. That should make it clear the arrogant way Mormon leadership treats the British people.

OK, seriously, in those busy areas no one pulls out a pen and writes down the website lds.org

Those that have in interest in looking are just going to remember the Mormons, go home and  Google it, then end up here.

Hey Jeff, How about postmormon.org donating to the church to help in this campaign, it will likely do us more good than them.

So, I thought someone might like an update from the "field". I didn't know about this campaign until a friend from London alerted me to it. We don't get the ads in Scotland, but they caught my friend's eye down south. He thought that they were hilarious, and suspected they were trying to piggy-back the "Book of Mormon" musical. Also, he thought that they were ridiculously gendered. My friend is a never-mo, who doesn't know about my very brief involvement with the LDS. We talk religion every now and then, so this was just a by the bye observation on his part, but I thought it was interesting.

For some reason, youtube has been suggesting Mormon videos lately. I thought it was me, but a recent dinner party revealed that this has been happening for all of my friends in the UK. Among my friends, the consensus seems to range from "annoying" to "hilarious". No one wants to convert, and our one Mormon friend finds it all a bit embarrassing. It seems that the field is not ripe, and we're all tares.

Having said all that, this is pretty much the reaction any proselytizing church gets, so it's not all that specific to Mormons. I just thought that someone might appreciate a bit of a reaction from the mission field.

This article was included in the current newsletter from the American Humanist Association. Here is the link:

http://www.americanhumanist.org/HNN/details/2013-03-what-is-humanistic-mormonism-an-interview-with-james

I really enjoyed reading the article and am looking forward to reading the second part of the interview, which will hopefully answer some of my questions.  The hardest part for me to understand is why keep the name mormon in he title of your group?  when I left I didn't want any affiliation with the LDS corporation. I don't even refer to myself as ex-mormon. I know that's a personal issue I have to work out.

I'm hoping someone here has a different perspective that will help me see the benefit of keeping the affiliation with the Mormons. I will try to remember to post the link for the second half of the interview when it is released.

Such a thing might appeal to one of my cousins, who describes himself as a "secular Mormon".  I think there's parts of the culture he likes, but like me, after taking a serious look at the history, he feels he can't quite believe the same as before.

I'd be very wary of this group. It was either two or three times they had me listed as one of their Facebook group members. They did that without my permission. I had to get stern with them to get them to stop adding me. Their behavior shows a lack of integrity, as far as I'm concerned.

I interacted with their president here on PostMo when he came here looking for volunteers to be"apostles" in their organizations. Here's a post you might use as your entry point into that bizarre discussion.

Thanks for sharing. I will check out that discussion and see how it compares to the article.  I don't mean this to offend anyone but it was the fact that they use "Mormon" in their name that made it feel off somehow.

Humanistic Mormons are sure entertaining to me even if they might be misguided.

According to the article:  "The Society for Humanistic Mormonism will also continue to practice the work of missionary service to all countries of the world. These missions will not only be for the purpose of sharing Humanistic Mormonism and humanism to the world, but also be in the form of service missions and improving the local conditions of the areas that Humanistic Mormon missionaries serve in. Humanistic Mormonism is for the entire world and we want to include everyone in the human family that is interested in it. We believe it is the duty of humanists everywhere to share their message with their friends and family members, and this is what Humanistic Mormons will do."

Great so if they are sincere in sharing humanism with the world, we will finally have Atheist Humanistic Mormons knocking on people's doors in "all countries of the world":  see Door To Door Atheists.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dW-bt_1LzY

John Dehlin would be proud.

Wow, I guess I just don't get this at all.   I'll just stick with plain 'ol secular humanism, the kind without proselytizing and making people around me uncomfortable, lol.

I'd be very wary of this group. It was either two or three times they had me listed as one of their Facebook group members. They did that without my permission. I had to get stern with them to get them to stop adding me. Their behavior shows a lack of integrity, as far as I'm concerned.

That sure sounds like Mormons to me.

Yeah-No thanks! I had enough of being told what to do in the other fake Mormon church! I don't see this group going anywhere anytime fast!

Wow, I guess I just don't get this at all.   I'll just stick with plain 'ol secular humanism, the kind without proselytizing and making people around me uncomfortable, lol.
