The church doesn't seem to parade her around like they did when she first joined.  Is she still mormon?

”I’ve begun worshiping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It’s there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, a lovely day. There’s no mystery, no one asks for money, I don’t have to dress up, and there’s no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to God are all answered at about the same 50-percent rate.” George Carlin

She still does firesides with her Mormon gospel choir, the Sports Utility Vehicles Saints Unified Voices (SUV): http://www.suvchoir.org/

Have her come to your ward or stake (just be sure to have your stake president do the request on church letterhead): http://www.suvchoir.org/contact.html

It seems to me that the morg would not be to happy with her choir competing against the tab choir for cd sales. From the look of the website, it appears they are looking at the endeavor as a business venture to sell cds.

I am sure it has something to do with the fact she is treated like a rock star by mormons (who wouldn’t be the least bit interested in her if she weren’t mormon).  She likely hasn’t had that type of attention since the late 70’s.  She has no idea she is just being used as a pawn for church leadership—in order to show the world: “See!  We’re NOT racist!  We have a black celebrity!”

I've never been able to decide which is more depressing, that they trot her out or that she lets herself be trotted. They are absolutely using her.

But fading R & B stars, fading musicians of every stripe, seem to have hard lives. I suppose (glumly) that Mormonism beats (although not by much) drug addiction and the dropping ever lower into the seamier side of LA life. I'm thinking of Mackenzie Phillips' painting of her father's awful life.

Gladys was actually in my family ward in Las Vegas back in the day... She was still being "celebrated" in the LDS church then... And it was always surreal to see her in Sacrament meeting. Her daughter is LDS, and that is how she got involved I believe. When ever she bore her testimony, she always pointed out the fact that the church gave her comfort during a lot of loss she had in her immediate family. I remember her brother died, or was killed shortly before or after she converted. Her comments in RS were always fun, because she would always say "sista" and she never gave up her religious convictions of her prior faith.... she was always good for a "amen" and "praise jesus"  during a lesson!  Ohhh how I loved to watch the TBM's squirm at such vocal declarations!! Almost made church entertaining~~~

She did take over one Easter Sunday, and it was probably the best sacrament I had ever been to.. She and her backup singers did a whole song medley (she was performing on the strip at the time). Which was such a breath of fresh air, it really made me wish Mormons would lighten up a little, and actually celebrate life a little more.

If she still is a mormon I don't know, she didn't marry a member, and in spite of taking out her endowments... She was smart enough not to wear the dreaded "g's" when she was remarried a few years ago. I think she got what she needed at the time, from the church.... But she isn't, and hasn't been a public figure for them, for a very long time.  Like many of us, the romance probably ended years ago!

just my take,
Syn

I think there comes a time in every persons life who is mormon that uses the church as a crutch for comfort.  I really wanted to believe in the life after death and eternal family.  Mormonism preys on the emotional weakness durings such times of stress in a persons life.  We all need to feel succored...NO PUN intended!  Some members in the church can provide a feeling of nurture and caring to others..to mourn with those that mourn and comfort those that stand in need of comfort.  This is not exclusive to LDS.

What makes us feel better about ourselves in our environment, within our family, our community and place in society?  I believe it's instinctive to want to feel part of the tribe and belong. When we do, we are at peace as long as we can live authentic and be ourselves with full acceptance from peers.

Absolutely. Such good sense. I think everyone goes through something like Mormonism -- if not Mormonism itself. Does anyone doubt that had he not been killed, Malcolm X would have moved on from surprisingly similar Islam?

Maybe because I lived through the seventies, I think of people joining the Moonies or Hare Krishnas, then running off to an EST seminar to put themselves back together or taking up Primal Screaming. All of it every bit as embarrassing as Mormonism, and all in search of comfort and community. And of course if you end up involved with organized crime (the Black Muslims), much more dangerous.

I understood one or more of her children were members and encouraged her to take the discussions.  If I remember right New Attitude helped with a concert Gladys did in her area.  Maybe she will chime in when she gets home from the wedding with some interesting information.

Not that it adds much to the discussion at hand, but . . . My partner went to Catholic school in Detroit with Gladys Knight's kids. (As my partner says, "Back when she was a Catholic.)

She went through the wet wild woods, waving her wild tail, and walking by her wild lone. But she never told anybody. (With apologies to R. Kipling for the gender change)

She did a "fireside" concert in my stake just a few months ago. They announced it for months beforehand and even specifically said, "If you have any African American friends, this would be a good event to bring them to." You had to have tickets and I'm sure if you said you'd bring a friend -- especially an African-American friend -- they'd hand them over quickly. I didn't care about attending, but I heard it was standing room only.

So I googled Famous Mormons (wanting to check out Amy Adams of the movie Doubt--(she of the low-cut stylish gowns... oops veering off topic).

sure enough the site still exists  http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=famous+mormons&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

As well there are several other Famous Mormons sites. Then I did a few spot checks of Catholics, Christians, Baptists and sites exist for those too.

So it made me wonder, if there are famous people who are the same religion as you, does that give credibility to your belief system?

Yep, for some people, the fact that a famous person believes or does or uses something is an actual endorsement.

That is why it is very, very important for political parties to showcase the famous who support the cause. There are actually people - many people - who take that as meaningful.

My opinion, based on my experience. Your mileage may vary.

I know the voices aren’t real, but they do come up with some good ideas.

I believe that Mormonism has an inferiority complex, and so over compensate by trying and believing that Mormons are the best at everything!

Famous people confirm the church is true.
Olympic athletes confirm the church is true.
The wealth of the church confirms that it is true.
We contributed more to Prop 8 than any other organization - the church is true!
etc. etc. etc.

And if they happen to find an area that they can't figure out a way to show they are the best at, they use this strategy:

We have suffered more, so the church is true.
We are persecuted more, so the church is true.
People hate Mormons, so the church is true.

Everything and anything confirm the church is true.  But they especially like the extremes.

Nothing like a bit of selective memory on the part of TBMs. They seem to overlook Mormons such as Ted Bundy, Arthur Gary Bishop, and Glenn Taylor Helzer. Quite the string of serial killers.

“And most of the Israelites did not come from outside Canaan—they emerged from within it. There was no mass Exodus from Egypt. There was no violent conquest of Canaan. Most of the people who formed early Israel were local people—the same people whom we see in the highlands throughout the Bronze and Iron Ages. The early Israelites were—irony of ironies—themselves originally Canaanites!” - Finkelstein & Silberman

 WHOA! I had no idea!

As for famous members, when I was a TBM I felt like famous members made Mormons seem less weird.  "See, if Katherine Heigl is Mormon we can't be THAT weird!"  Although it bothered me a lot that most of the really famous ones clearly weren't active anymore.  I felt they weren't doing their part to represent the church well and had just been too sucked into the Hollywood lifestyle/deceived by Satan.  Now I really wonder if any of them have really done their research and left for the doctrinal/historical reasons.

You're absolutely right about the inferiority complex.  In the '80's, when Michael Jackson was so popular, the JW's had a huge surge in membership.  As a missionary, we often got the question about were there any famous Mormons aside from the Osmonds.  That was before Sister Gladys Knight, Survivor, The Real World, and all those Dancing With the Stars and American Idol contestants.  Canadians only knew Junior Ah You, who played for the Concordes for awhile, and it was common knowledge Randy Bachman was LDS.

Having famous people as members of your church legitimizes you.  Or something.  I never could figure that out.

It also may be the Mormons' desire to prove "we're not really freaks!"

"I kind of fell out of Mormonism at a young age. My brothers and I were not completely rebellious, but I remember driving to church in the minivan on Sunday--church is three hours long if you're Mormon-- we would stop at a red light, throw open the slider [door] and run for the hills. My mother would be screaming!"

I love this quote. We need a "Used to be Mormon, now a PostMo" site.

Nothing like a bit of selective memory on the part of TBMs. They seem to overlook Mormons such as Ted Bundy, Arthur Gary Bishop, and Glenn Taylor Helzer. Quite the string of serial killers.

^The Famous Mormons site lists them all and then some.

And yes having famous people in your religion absolutely validates it.. Didn't you all KNOW that?? I mean you all should become Muslim immediately.. We have Cat Stevens.. how cool is that? Er.. um.....kindlly overlook Osama Bin Laden and all the pesky terrorists, and of course the most sinister of them all... Michael Jackson.

Seriously though, I'm always interested to learn if someone famous is a Mormon.

Gary Gilmore came from a long line of Mormon heritage....in 1977, he was the first man executed in the US, after Capitol punishment was suspended by the Supreme Court in 1972.

I don't know if Gary was actually a Mormon or not. His mother was, but married outside of the church to a drunken, con man.

Gilmore's brother Mikyl wrote Shot in the Heart. It is a good book with a lot of info about blood attonement and the Danites.

On a side note.....
I was never really impressed by the fact that certain people were Mormon. I figured if I only concentrated on those people, think of all the really wonderful people outside of the Morg that I would miss out on. Including my current husband, who is one of the finest people I have ever met. He is a good man, with a good heart, a hard working honest man, who treats me with all the love, respect and equality that I never had in my Ultra Mo temple marriage.

Even while I was involved in the church, I had decided that if I met a man who was not a Mo I would give him a chance because I wasn't all the impressed with most of the Morg men that I knew.

I love how everyone is counted in the numbers even the ones that state that they are NOT mormon or don't practice anymore.

Gary Gilmore recieved Catholic last rites from the priest who accompanied him to his execution. I was taking an Italian class from the priest at the time and he mentioned it to the class, so I would assume that Gilmore wasn't active or that he wasn't a Mormon at all.

I know that his mothers family was Mormon but I wasn't sure about Gary. It's hard to know what was true and what wasn't. His dad's mother told them that their dad was Houdini's illigitimate son and their mother told of witnessing a public hanging when she was a child. Pretty messed up family.

I don't know anything about his religious beliefs other than he chose a priest to be with him when he died. I remember they made a movie about it and it priest played himself.I don't know if he had been baptized or had any Mormon training.

I just realized, my last comment may sound like something a troll would ask...but I was seriously wondering (not being sarcastic as it may appear)...I personally wish the former Mormon scientists who found the DNA evidence that shows where Native Americans descend from, ought to be famous...The fact that native DNA tests dont get more media attention makes me wonder...is the media afraid to disprove the BOM? Maybe they get a lot of money from the SCC to keep their collective mouths shut...

Was it a Mo scientist who discovered that? I'm only familiar with Southerton who, as a scientist, found the evidence irrefutable and ended up leaving the church because of it. But I had thought the studies were by non-Mos. Certainly if that was done originally by a Mo, they deserve a medal for their integrity.

Maybe it was'nt a Mormon who was over the tests, but they were involved, and they looked so conflicted on the Youtube video where they discussed the results...They appeared to be on the verge of tears while talking about it...

I'm sure he's been necro-dunked by now.  As for the original question, Jesus was a Jew, but the Jews don't seem to be thrilled about it.

I think exactly the same thing.  Steve Young with a super bowl vicotory and in the NFL Hall of Fame concludes that the church is true.

Amen to all you said.

I dunno about the two other fellas, but I'm about 60% sure that Ted Bundy was not a mormon. According to the Wikipedia site, he was an active Methodist in his youth, but not other mention of a later conversion or anything suggests or supports the idea that he was a mormon. Just because someone lived in Utah does not mean they automatically drank the Kool Aid and just couldn't resist joining the church.

Same goes for Alice Cooper or Mick Jagger. Neither one sat on a jet with a GA and decided his rock and roll lifestyle was all wrong and he must simply join The Church.

It's all nonsense/appeal to authority type of logic, which is to say... it's not logical at all.

Let me know what evidence you find that Ted Bundy really was actually a mormon, even if only for five minutes. I don't buy it for one second.

Oh, and Matt Stone and Trey Parker are not mormons either. Matt Stone just grew up around a lot of mormons so their knowlege is circumstantial. They are the only brilliant comedy writers who seem to be aware that mormonism is rife with comedy gold just waiting to be mined. Aside from our own Peter_Mary, of course, who has already plundered several really great mormon funnies.

I read that Bundy was baptized while he lived in Utah. His girl friend in Washington was Mormon. He did it partly to please her and partly to fit in.In Utah being a Mormon is an advantage and Bundy was an opportunist. He never actually lived a Mormon life.As a predator, perhaps he thought that being a clean-cut Mormon law student would help deflect suspicion from him. It was part of his Utah image.

Maybe we should start a web site of infamous Mormons!

P.S. Alice Cooper is "sort of Mormon" in a loose sense:  His grandfather was an apostle in the Bickertonite Church (a splinter Mormon church based in Pittsburgh, PA).

It's entirely possible, but my burning question is where did you read that? Ann Rule did extensive research on the guy and knew him, so if you read it in her book, then I will accept this as fact, stand corrected, and acknowledge that I don't actually know everything.  Otherwise, I'd be interested in knowing what your source is, if you remember. (I never remember where I read things...)

I've seen him noted as a mormon on the interwebs before, too, so I'm not too sure what info out there is credible and what is, well, wishful thinking, I guess.  I have a passing fascination with Bundy myself because I live in one of the cities where he did some killin'.

I think I read it in Ann Rule's book, but I could be wrong since I read it years ago. I've read other books about him and, since I live in Utah, there was plenty written locally about him at the time of his arrest, trials and execution. I'm not absolutely sure of my source, but I'm pretty sure he joined. I know he met with some bishop when he was investigating. The bishop invited him to dinner where Bundy complimented his teen-aged daughter on her beautiful long, dark hair. The man was totally freaked out when Bundy was charged with raping and killing all those girls who had long dark hair. If I have a chance, I'll  try to locate Rule's book and see if that was where I read it.

The mormon grapevine also get excited about any celebrity who just LIVES in Utah.  Choosing Utah is oh so close to being Mormon.  It's probably just a matter of time.

30 years ago maybe.  Tal would probably be more "famous" but still a bit past his "famous" prime.  My guess, though, is that we can claim about half of the people on the "famous mormons" site.  I mean, do you really think that Sister Heigl pays her 10%?

I forgot about the recanted Ted Bundy encounters circulating around the LDS functions after his final arrest was made.  Yes, I actually knew a girl whom almost left a dance with that creepy killer.  The nearly overt pressure excised on long dark haired young women, targeted by him, was sure to have happened in and around Provo, Utah.

He dumped one of the bodies behind my Ward house, when I was a kid.  Pretty creepy.

D. B. Cooper.

There is a book written by the FBI guy who did extensive investigation into the D.B. Cooper case and claims emphatically that it is one Richard McCoy.  The name of the book "The Real McCoy".

For any of those that are that old or recall, he is the guy who hijacked an airplane with a bunch of money and bailed out over Provo, Ut.  The FBI nabbed him after a few days along with the money.  I believe the headlines were:  "Mormon Sunday School Teacher HiJacks Airplain".

Anyway, he was convicted and got killed some years later after escaping prison.  At the time he was a BYU student and Sunday School teacher.

Does that qualify for famous mormon?

He was pretty famous of a little while.  Of course, the legend of DB Cooper lives on.

Although the Cooper/McCoy connection is tantalizing, it has never been conclusively proven that they are one and the same person...

I'd like to think that D. B. is still around.  It makes for a good story...

To answer the question, hell yeah, Mc Coy is a famous mormon, let us not forget...

Well, I know alot of post-mos love to sleep in on a Sunday morning
right?  It is one of the many "blessings" of being postmo.

I will be in and out all day as I have to go to town..but I had to share this
and check in once in awhile.

At 7:30 this morning, the phone rang and his was my Dad..very TBM..who
knows that I  have been having issues about the church but doesn't know
that I have resigned...

He said:  "Vickie...Vickie...hurry quick..turn on channel 11!  You have got
to see this..this woman is a convert to the church and has a very strong
testimony.. !  You will get alot out of what she is talking about..she has
a strong spirit of the gospel".

Okay...I just woke up and said okay Dad...hung up...started my coffee..
Then switched on the TV to see this wonderful convert with a testimony.

Gees...I could have woke up to anything except...GLADYS KNIGHT...
This is the same woman my Dad didn't want me to  listen to on the radio
when I was a teen..(he doesn't know the PIPS!)...

Anyway, I feel better..I didn't  want to wake up to Gladys Knight and her
testimony...blech...thanks for listening to me...Dad will call later and ask me
what I think...

(any fun suggestions is very much appreciated)

I saw a little of that too.  The arrangement I heard wouldn't pass SM approriateness.  A little too jazzzzyyy for that.  I wish Gladys knew she was being used and abused by the Morg.  Heck, I wish everyone knew we were being used and abused, just like Gladys, come to think of it.  We get to do it without the spotlight though.

I wish! I never know what to say! I tend to walk away with an inward groan.

My mom did something like this to me, Vickie. She knows I have issues with how the Church treats women. She came home from -- I think some General Conference -- gushing, "Oh, you should have been there! You would have been so proud! It was so feminist! Gordon B. Hinckley said he was grateful to his daughter for taking care of him in his old age!"

Inward groan. Thanks, Gordie. You helped to orchestrate the defeat of ERA ensuring low wages and limited opportunities for at least three more generations of women, but hey! You said thanks to the daughter whose life you have confined. Let's hear it for Gordie B. the great feminist!

Maybe you could come up with a clever version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and sing it to him. "I heard it through the grapevine. No longer is this church mine. Yeah yeah I heard it through the grapevine."

Vickie:
My only thought for a "fun" response to Dad would be,

"Gee, Dad, she was a real pip."

Then, of course, don't explain what you mean by that.

Then another response that might be useful could be something to the effect of, "I didn't find it helpful.  I kinda wish you hadn't called me and woken me up," said in as noncombative a way as you can.

None of our TBM family members put this kind of pressure on us.  Perhaps that will change some when my son returns from his mission.  On his Christmas phone call he admitted to one of my other sons that he had almost quit the mission and just come home.  Since that time, he has had some kind of major conversion.  I'm worried.

I am glad, however, that I don't have to suffer from family pressure, and I feel for you.  I wish I had something to offer other than just a virtual hug, but that's all I've got.

Best wishes.

 Say,

"Seeing that reminded me of the Priesthood Ban. According to Brigham Young, if the Church EVER extended the Priesthood to black men, the church would be in a state of total apostasy and the priesthood would be removed from it immediately.

"I was going to call you with that reference, so you could get out of the apostate church and find the organization on earth that now HAS the priesthood. Thanks for reminding me."

Then say, "Opps, gotta go" and hang up.

Oh..I love your responses, how I wish that I had sat down at the computer
before my Dad called the 2nd time..(like why isn't he in SM???)  He called
to tell me that President Monson was on...Uh..I do not know how you guys
that still have TBM's in the house do this!!  I have great appreciation for
what you are going through..

I wish that I had looked at your replies first..Love them..I did tell  him that
Gladys was a rock star/jazz star from way back...he didn't let me really
speak...it was just..well..she sure has a testimony...blah..blah..blah..

I wish in a way that I would have played along and suggested how Ms.
Knight had come a long ways...that to be so wayward in the pre-existence
that it is amazing that she has come along so well..

You know what though??  I would  have given anything if my Dad had called
at any time last Sunday to wish me Happy Mother's Day...

I will have to face him someday...but I don't want that to be over the phone.
I have a tendency to say the wrong things and then begin to cry..

You guys are amazing...thank you so much for your support and humor....!!
I really needed that..

Now..who is this Monson guy???

Hugs,  Vickie

BTW:  If my sister and I would have jazzed music up for any congregation
for the church...we would have been kicked out...

Vickie, the thing that struck me about that conversation is that your dad seems to know exactly what he's doing.  He is trying to shut you up when you try to speak, which kind of indicates to me he knows he is being inappropriate and maybe pushy too.

After lunch, I would start turning my ringer off and letting your calls go to voice mail on Sunday mornings.  Sheesh, at least I only hear church bells on Sunday morning (but my TBM FIL used to call at 4:30 a.m. so I do know what this is like).

Good luck standing up to him, you'll do fine.

Just the other day I found this cartoon in 'The New Yorker' and I thought it might fit well in this thread:

Vick, I'm sorry your dad didn't call you for Mother's Day. I know what it's like to have one-sided conversations with a TBM parent. My dad is like yours in this respect. I never talk about my struggles with him either. When I have in the past, he happily pours out TBM 'advice.' Some things are just better left unsaid because they only fall upon deaf ears. Ironically, one of my dad's favorite quotes is "Don't confuse me with the facts; my mind is made up!"

Love this picture..and..do we have the same Dad?  He doesn't call unless it
has something to do with the church.  There is no "how are you" or anything.
Should a conversation get heavy, he talks over me..it is just no good and
you know, I would love to talk to  him..but I can't handle that.  Hugs and
thanks for sharing.

Ugh. My dad sent me the glurge/chain e-mail about Snoop Doggy Dogg's conversion to the church. Ole Snoop was supposedly converted by Gladys Knight herself.

I just laughed and thought, "Have you ever even heard of Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dad? You're outta your mind if you think he's converted." No way Snoop's giving up all that fine smoke and p***y, and lopping off his dreds... to become a mormon.

You can do what I do: just thank your dad graciously for the information, roll over, and go back to sleep. Or let the machine pick up his call.

Hey Mom,

I have been thinking about this since you called me this morning.  I really hope I don't give up too much personal stuff on the board.  If you think I crossed the line, just let me know and I will delete it, promise.

Grandpa has always been the "authority." He has always had issues with control, and even pushed my grandmother (who was a SAINT) down the stairs when she was pregnant with my Mom.  Let me tell you... if it was physically possible for me to have been there at that moment, I would have knocked him the hell out... but that is another topic completely.

Thing with Grandpa is that he doesn't listen.  He never has.  I sincerely doubt he ever will.  I even wrote an article for my blog about it, but decided not to publish it because it was too personal.

He won't listen to anything we say because he is a "worthy" priesthood holder and we are just women.  That is why I have been living in the state for a year and he hasn't even picked up the flipping phone.  He won't like what I have to say, he won't.

You're kidding me right?? Snoop Diggy Dogg?? Converted?? Next Sunday dogzilla, the phone goes off...unplug the damn thing is what I am going to do...Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Well that's what the e-mail said. I searched Snopes, but I can only assume it's an urban legend/wishful mormon thinking. Just like the story of some GA converting Mick Jagger, or getting him to admit the Rolling Stones' music is designed to draw children to the devilish world of drugs and sex.  Right? 'Cause Snoop Dogg burns fat ones with Gladys Knight and Mick Jagger flies coach.

I don't answer the phone before 8 a.m. or after 9:30 p.m. Unless it's a date/BF/hookup/booty call, or there's been a death in the family. In which case, you have to leave a message and I will call you back. If you can't be bothered to leave a message, I can't be bothered to call you back. My family are used to this and they all probably think I'm a selfish asshole. People without boundaries tend to react to people with boundaries in that way, so I wouldn't sweat it much if I were you.

OK. I am GLAD you said that! I am generally thought of us as a nice person. Headstrong, but nice. A mormon acquaintance of mine was telling me how she is having a hard time saying "no". I told her that I don't have a hard time with it. I said that perhaps some would find that bitchy...She jumped in, and said, "At least you are aware of it."

Hmmm. I have boundaries. She doesn't. I don't think that makes me a bad person, or selfish. I just know I can't love or take care of others without loving and taking care of myself. Period.

Talking about boundaries: A nice mormon boy I work with was really torn when he heard I was moving. The sweetie said he wanted to help me. I moved on his fiancees birthday. When he explained what was giving him "conflict" about it...I literally burst out laughing, and told him that it's a no brainer; he should spend time with his fiancee, not helping a woman at work move. Ummm. Boundaries. That is great! I forgot what it's like to be told you shouldn't have them.

Yes, DogZ is The ONE! I wanna be like her when I grow up. Really!

I remember a thread about Snoop here not too long ago and there was a link to an article that confirmed the rumor to be false.

If Snoop had really gone over the Other Side, that would be too scary for words!

Sheesh... what a passive-aggressive way to come out and call you a bitch.

Ever notice... when a man sets boundaries and stands his ground, he's just a strong person, but when a woman does it, she's a bitch?

Boundaries. Having them does not make you a bad person, selfish, or a bitch. But people who do not have them will perceive you that way. That's one of the big fat red flags they throw up... if someone calls you selfish or bitchy, ask yourself "did this person just clue me in that she/he cannot say no and has no boundaries of her own?" This is also indicative of a controlling personality. People who try to control me think I'm a bitch when I won't cooperate and just do what they want me to do. Saying no is perceived as bitchy... unless the person you're saying no to also has some modicum of self-respect and then saying no is just not a big deal.

 Ummmm. YES!

Given that popular perception, maybe I should change my name...I need a good dog name.

That is probably part of what makes it so easy for Mormons to shake their heads and *tsk tsk* the evil people who leave. When you perceive someone as bitchy, or a jerk, it's easier to not want to "help" them, and "helping" us "poor, lost souls" should be their primary goal, right??? Oh, wait... That is Biblical, and probably not "translated correctly"... I have to remember to keep this stuff straight!

What a very painful, sad sketch of him, WFS. My dad was never like that. I'm so sorry that your grandfather has had such a negative impact on his family.

As for Dogzilla's explanation of boundaries and 'bitches', thank you for that, Dog. I already knew that but you really clarified it for me. Mashiara, you too. That whole psychology of reducing someone who doesn't conform to someone's or some group's ideology to a mere label is so unfair.

Mormons (or any mind-controlled group) aren't allowed to validate alternative, personal boundaries so if they are confronted with someone else's boundaries, they don't know how to accept them or respect them.

My Mother is not a TBM, has NEVER been a TBM.

She is a HARD CORE Southern Baptist and she sounds just like the TBM parents on here.

I don't hardly ever tell her what is going on in my life, I don't need the lectures or the advice, especially when she doesn't actually pay attention to what I am saying.

You guys are NOT alone.

Dear Vickie:
Obviously I'm not your dad. Mother's Day is passed. I don't know your telephone number. I can't call you, but . . .
Did you know that tomorrow, Monday, May 19, is

VICTORIA DAY?

Well, it is. And, I'm not making that up. It says it right on my calendar,

VICTORIA DAY (Canada)

I think it is wonderful that Canada has set aside an entire day, just to recognize what a Terrific Person you are!
Even though I'm not Canadian, I'm going to celebrate Victoria Day tomorrow, in YOUR HONOR!
Thank you, Vickie. For the support that you have given to me and to others. Thank you, for being the wonderful, vibrant, vital, caring human being that you are.
Hope you have the best

VICTORIA DAY

ever.
Happy Victoria Day

I posted this inquiry over at RfM, but I'm not getting much help.  Has anyone been to one of the firesides that Gladys Knight does with her choir? There's one coming up in my area and I love good gospel music, but I don't like missionary activities.  I understand that these firesides are pretty heavy with a "You should join this church" kind of message.  If I attend, will I be glad I did?

‘There are days,’ he reflected, ‘when one sees as though one had been blind the rest of one’s life… One lives in the very present moment; lives intently. There is no urge to be doing; being is the highest good.’  (Dr. Stephen Maturin in Patrick O’Brian’s Post Captain)

I am post-mo, my wife is still mo. She invited a couple of our non member friends (who are very involved in their baptist church) to this. We went and ended up walking out. My very mormon wife was embarrassed as to how "in your face" it was with missionary work. It was really long too, we stayed for 2 hours and from what I hear it went on for another 45 minutes. From the time we were there it was about 45 minutes music and the rest testimony, and not very good testimony at that. I felt like the message was "it's ok to be black and mormon". It was so bad that my wife, again who is very mormon, apologized to our friends for bringing them to something like that. In my opinion, do not waste your time.

Thanks, rgb.  That's the impression I've gotten as I've heard it announced and promoted at church.  My wife is bringing a friend who really enjoys music, but I fear that she will not be too happy with the message.  For myself, I think maybe I'll just listen to the CD.

I have been to one, here in Las Vegas.

There will be musical instruments in the chapel that are not normally allowed.
It was a full house, missionaries and their investigators, members all mixed together. The missionaries were told not to take the limited seats, so they stood on the sides of the chapel/gym. The looked like ushers, which I guess they were.
Then the crowd is instructed to stand and clap as the choir comes in, walking from all the way in the back to the front. Gladys, of course, comes in last.  The clapping was quite loud, and it was quite a scene. Very rock concert-ish.

Then opening prayer, music, talks, testimonies, and a very heavy dose of recruiting messages. "we have the truth" "come share our joy" "god is here with us""the special feeling you have felt while being here is the spirit, telling you our message is true".....stuff like that.

Testimony from Gladys, her husband (who was quite funny) and an institute director who is close to Gladys and acts as the master of ceremonies.

The most embarrassing part of the night was when the stake president closed the fireside with this gem of a comment.  He said "It's a good thing I was seated next to ______________ so he could help me keep in time with the music"
Of course _____________ was black.

Nice welcoming comment for those who dropped by to see what the mormons were all about

For all her efforts to bring new souls to the Celestial Kingdom, and more money into the coffers of MoInc, Glady deserves at least to know what she did in the pre-existence to warrant her curse. She was cursed, right? I mean, she has the mark of Cain - the skin of blackness - and was born well before 1978, after all. Clearly, she had to have been less valiant in the pre-existence. She also deserves to know why she has yet to become white and delightsome again. It worked for the ancient Lamanites.

Yeah, I can see how uncomfortable member's would be with this setup...seeing how everything else they put on is incredible dull without modern music or the ability to clap.

Wow... I wish I had read this thread before I went to one of these yesterday!!

I have to say, it was worth going just to hear Gladys sing the little bit that she did. She is phenomenal -- and a beautiful person, which came through very clearly.

But I left with a very sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, and anger burning. I wonder if she has any idea of the true nature of what she's representing, and how they're using her, and I am sure at least 25% of the audience had no idea what they were in for, vis a vis the strong missionary push.

JillOut, you must live close by.  My son, daughter-in-law, and daughter attended the 8:00 show last night.  Everything I heard along the way was pretty accurate...great music, some funny stuff in the talks, but an absolutely unabashed message re: "the one and only true church."  Hearing that description, in spite of my love of music, I decided not to attend...I'm glad I wasn't there.  They, on the other hand, thought it was great.  They admitted that it was a very strong push toward the church, but they thought people took it in stride.  If the Baltimore Stake has droves of baptisms because of it, I guess we'll know.  I kind of doubt that's likely.  There's too much church stuff to accept beyond Gladys Knight's message.

In all fairness, though, I know at least in the Susquehanna Ward, an announcement was read for a couple of weeks about the purpose of the fireside.  I think I remember the phrase "...strong missionary message..." in the description and they specifically cautioned against referring to this as a Gladys Knight concert.  Chances are good that the kind of reaction you had to the event (and I would have had if I had gone) is pretty common.  If people paid attention in sacrament meeting, they should have been able to prepare their non-member friends about it.

I'm in the DC area, I'm glad to hear there are more of us out here!

All I know is, I wasn't warned. I was told to expect "a little bit of testimony sharing," not 45 minutes of it, with about the same amount of time devoted to the music. And I can't say because I don't know first-hand how it was presented, but I doubt the members of congregations of other churches who were given tickets were adequately warned; if so, I can't imagine that they would have come. I thought it was going to be a musical celebration of our common faith with a little Mormon flava mixed in; instead, it just seemed like a poaching expedition. Not a good way for the Morg to build good will in the larger Christian community, if you ask me.

Like I said, it was worth it to me to hear her sing, and the choir, in fairness, kicked a$$. But I was still left feeling a bit sick and angry; I have a hangover today, even.
