I recently read a comment from Tom Sarbeck, a member of the "AtheistNexus.org" forum who said that a niece's religious views and his atheistic worldview might result in additional shunning. Religiously-based shunning is something that I am no stranger to. I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness , so I have seen the effects that shunning due to religious differences have on people. If your loved ones shun you because you don't believe what they believe, then maybe its a good thing that you are no longer involved with such selfish people. You shouldn't have to be dishonest to yourself or conform to their standards in order to be a in a relationship with someone who won't let you be yourself, especially if you are not harming anyone else while being honest with yourself.
What kind of person are they to begin with if they behave that way, and why would you even want to continue or even pursue a relationship with such a person? I would just wiggle my fingers and say, "Bye-Bye". It would be no great loss in my eyes. What do you think?
Sincerely,
B.W.
