 The Best of PostMormon.org
 

 Post-Mormons are members of a rapidly growing community of families and individuals who have voluntarily left Mormonism. We choose to no longer base our lives, and the lives of our children, on "truths" dictated by others. We believe that truth is freely available to any honest, diligent seeker regardless of creed, age, race or sexual orientation.

     
We have felt the butterfly’s metamorphosis. Forces that well up from within have compelled us to grow beyond the limits of Mormonism. And so we have become a loosely knit community of friends and support groups, and endeavor to help those like us who also feel the need to explore meaning, purpose and life beyond Mormonism. We celebrate the wonderful diversity of life as we experience as fully as we can our physical and cultural reality. We perceive ourselves as part of a human tapestry that is rich beyond our ability to comprehend, and wonder at this miracle. We have come to realize that there are more ways to do good, and be good, than we can number. What we once perceived as the “strait and narrow way” has broadened to include all ways that promote individual and collective well-being.
 We do not apologize for our inability to fully understand reality or the nature of our own existence. As Albert Einstein said:

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed."

 Some ask if we are anti-Mormon. Our answer is, no, we are not. We feel we are not because we acknowledge and want to keep all the good that came into our lives through Mormonism. We feel we are not because it's not our purpose to encourage people to leave the Church. We feel we are not because many of our family and friends are Mormons and we certainly are not anti-family and friends. But as an organization, we are open about the Church's misrepresentations and the way in which its dogmatism and authoritarianism have proven detrimental to many individuals, families, and communities. As Winston Churchill once said, "Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things."
 We do not advocate another form of Mormonism or any other religion and believe that loving one's neighbor begins with giving up the claim to have special access to truth. We feel that arrogance attends the illusion of “knowing the truth” and that such arrogance leads to a narrow-minded tribalism that impedes personal growth and fosters a divided community. Some of us choose to continue their spiritual journey through traditional religious means and others of us identify ourselves as atheistic or agnostic. We respect these choices as we do those of the well-informed among our family and friends who choose to remain traditional Mormons. We feel sad for those who choose ignorance of any kind and strongly disagree with the few within Mormonism who encourage ignorance and spread misinformation.
 Life is wonderful. We are overcome by feelings of gratitude for the glimpses we occasionally have of its majesty and mystery. And we revel in the opportunity to connect with each other and those of many other walks of life in ways more satisfying than anything we had previously experienced. We would welcome the opportunity to get to know you and invite you to join in the conversation in The Community Forum on this site.

I always kind of wondered what the wives did with themselves...when Brigham was visiting someone else.
 
Seems like a brothel/harem.
 
Would be interesting to read the journals of the women, to see if there were close relationships among themselves.

handbook question re children of polygamists and same sex married

Had a discussion today with a TBM relative.
 I had understood that the new handbook rules denied children of same sex marriages blessings and baptisms until 18. (well not the blessing) and that children of polygamists could be blessed but not baptised until 18... are the rules for these two groups of children identical?
someone here will no doubt know so thanks in advance

You're likely to get different answers...  See, there's now a widening divide between Policy and Doctrine.  
 
Doctrine is set in concrete.  Policy is open to interpretation.  And that's just how ghawd operates, don'tcha know!
 
 
As for set in concrete, there's this:  Missionaries will baptize any kid between the ages or 9 and 17 they can, with zero consideration regarding the kids' circumstances, just as long as they can get even just oral permission from a parent or guardian.  
 
We had two sisters interested in joining the church but their dad was adament that they not be baptized.  I watched as my senior companion tried very hard to get their mother to agree to them being baptized.  Had she ever even just mutely nodded her head, he would have dunked the girls, and left them to deal with their dad.  
 
There was never, and I believe to this day, ever any consideration regarding the situations into which missionaries put their underage part family member converts.  But suddenly they care about the children of same gender parents...

I have access to a copy of the 2006 Handbook.  It states that children of parents who have practiced or are practicing plural marriage must have approval of the first presidency before being baptized.  It does not require them to wait until age 18.  They must repudiate "the teachings upon which their parents based their practice of plural marriage."  It does not say anything (that I could find) about restricting name/blessings.  
 
I don't know if the church changed this since 2006, but anyone who claims that children of same-sex parents are just being treated the same as children of polygamous parents have been all along, is either mistaken or lying. 
 
A little side note:  notice the careful wording of the "repudiation."  They can't just say "repudiate polygamy" since D&C 132 still stands and polygamy is (in theory) alive and well for those who have died after serially marrying multiple wives.

This link will take you to the full 2006 handbook of instructions. It's too big to post as an attachment. The section on "Children whose parents have practiced or are practicing plural marriige" is on page 34 of the handbook (page 47 within the entire document). It reads:
 
    Children of parents who have practiced or are practicing plural marriage must receive approval from the First Presidency to be baptized. The mission president or bishop may request this approval when he is satisfied that the children (1) accept the teachings and doctrines of the church and (2) repudiate the teachings upon which their parents based their practice of plural marriage. The mission president submits the request through a member of the Presidency of the Seventy or the Area Presidency. The bishop submits the request through the stake president.
 
It is very clear that the rules about children of polygamous couples are NOT the same as same sex couples.
 
EDITED TO ADD:
 
I have found the 2010 Handbook of Instructions online - click on this link. The section on children of plural marriage (found on page 145) is a bit different:
 
Children Whose Parents Have Practiced or Are Practicing Plural Marriage
 
    Children of parents who have practiced or are practicing plural marriage contrary to the law must receive approval from the First Presidency before they may be baptized and confirmed. The mission president may request this approval from the office of the First Presidency when he is satisfied that all three of the following requirements are met:
 
The children accept the teachings and doctrines of the church.
The children repudiate the teachings upon which their parents based their practice of plural marriage.
Minor children are not living in a home where polygamy is being taught or practiced. 
So there you have it. What I find interesting, and Eric Reeves touched on this, is the statement in the first paragraph which only disallows baptism if the parents are practicing plural marriage contrary to the law. So if plural marriage is legal in a certain country, then there is no restriction on children being baptized.
 
Reading these excerpts, it is TOTALLY disingenuous of the church to draw parallels between children of plural marriage and children of same-gender parents.

I thought this was well-written.  So much of what is said here rings true for me--the oppression and insisted upon acceptance of having to share your husband in eternity.  Accept--don't protest or you will lose your children for eternity.  Accept whatever god will give you or you will get nothing at all.  Abuse--plain and simple.
 
And finally, an article by a PostMo.  She graduated from Harvard and no longer believes in mormonism.  (As joseph's myth says--small m)

The (.3) thing is lovely.  Such outright precision... uhh... Unless the Google on yur smartphone is lit.
 
 
 
Better yet, it was the illegally practiced LDS polygamy that built up rapidly just inside the Mexico territories once the US government came down hard on Utah during the 1800's and even recently included such well known names as Mitt Romney's dad.

Wow, I just learned something!
 
When I was on my mission, it was a law that the church could own no property.  So this seemingly made consideration of a temple impossible, since the land belonged to the state, and agents of the state could not be excluded, if they wanted access to the property.  
 
I have no idea what arrangements the church made with the government regarding this rule, but obviously they must have come to some type of understanding, because the Mexico City temple is now over 30 years old. 
 
Turns out that Mexico formally registered mormonism as a an official Mexican religion in 1993, thus giving los mormones the right to own property.  So whatever the arrangement was, it ended in 1993.
 
Knowing the church, and Mexican politicians, money freely changed hands...

 Reminds me of Monson giving expensive gifts to Nazi leaders so Mormons could build in Germany. Then Monson took credit for bringing down the wall.

This stinks strongly of propaganda.  For example, this quote is a big lie:
 
"Catholicism and mainline Protestant denominations have seen declines in membership in recent years. Mormonism has seen uninterrupted growth since its founding in New York in 1830."

People like to be on the winning team so the church hides how fast its numbers are shrinking.    So sad as most of the Latino people are family oriented and good people.  The "family forever" thing will suck many of the innocent in.   However, I remember reading how irrate some of them were to hear that Joseph Smith was a Warren Jeffs.  Maybe we need PostMo billboards in South America.
