My view on a review of a book on Columbine and LGBT pride sign that I saw on AtheistNexus.org

Dear Readers,

My take on book about Columbine view on Amazon.com

I remember reading a review of a book on Columbine about which victims should be portrayed as "martyrs". This review said that if Rachel Scott had been a lesbian that her death would have been considered a hate crime, but because she was a Christian nothing happened. Sounds to me like this reviewer is homophobic. First of all, there  is no evidence that Rachel Scott or Cassie Bernall were murdered for their religious beliefs. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were raised by Christian families, oddly enough.  Isaiah Shoels, I think his name was, he was called a "nigger" right before she was shot to death. That's hate speech. It is sad and tragic that that was probably the last word that ever rang through his ears. Valeen Schnurr was asked if she believed in God and she says yes. She was asked why and she replied because her parents did. Cassie Bernall was into witchcraft before becoming an evangelical Christian and even thought of killing her parents. Sorry, but Cassie sounded like a basket case at one point in her life. Most people who practice witchcraft do not think about killing others. I don't think that Cassie was a good person because she was a Christian, I think she had mental issues at one point and should have gotten help from a licensed therapist. I think she tried to do the right thing as time went on.  Rachel Scott was born and raised into a family who were Christians. She wasn't a saint or an angel, she did her best to be a good person. She wasn't a good person because she was a Christian, she was a good person because that's just who she was and that is the kind of person that she wanted to be.

Rachel Scott's dad may have lobbied for anti-bulling laws, but I also know that he is very homophobic. I swear I read someplace that he is willing to deny same-sex couples the civil right to marry on the grounds of his religious beliefs. You don't get to deny someone civil rights because your religious beliefs have a wrong-headed view of a certain group of people. So I would say, Mr. Scott, if same-sex couples want to marry each other in the civil sense, that is none of your business and you have no right to interfere in such matters.  Being religious is no guarantee that you are a moral person or are not going to be a jerk. Believe me, I have been involved with more religious groups than most people have in a lifetime. I've seen how rude, snobby, greedy, selfish, bigoted and hateful a lot of religious people can be.  I feel sorry for what happened to Rachel, Cassie , Isaiah and all the other victims of the Columbine shootings. It was a tragedy that never should have happened.

Just a few months before Columbine, James Byrd Jr., a young black man was tied by his neck to the back of a truck and drug around until he died by racists in Jasper. Shortly after that, Matthew Shepard who was an openly gay college student from a wealthy family in Laramie, Wyoming was lured from a bar, beaten, tied to a fence and left to die by his homophobic murderers. James Byrd's death had an impact on the black community and Matthew Shepard's death had a huge impact on the LGBT community and really helped people think more about the severity of hate crimes in general. It was only 60 years ago, when Emmett Till was murdered in Money, Mississippi for whistling at a white woman as a joke which was suggested to him by a cousin. A joke which cost this young boy who loved pulling pranks on friends, who had a close relationship, was very protective of his momma, responsible and very smart, his life. Treyvon Martin was shot to death by George Zimmerman while heading home from a small store because Zimmerman had suspected that the boy was up to no good, merely because Treyvon was black. These are just some of the many vicious crimes that have occurred before or since Columbine.

Atheist Nexus post shot

At an LGBT pride parade there was a Christian protester walking around, carrying a sign on his back that is being covered up by two men that reads " Homo sex is in".
