AtheistTVCan you believe it – AtheistTV! I just found out about this yesterday.
If you have a Roku, they are starting the Atheist TV Network at 7:00 PM tonight. If not, you can watch Atheist TV Live through their live stream with the rest of us. It appears to be produced by American Atheists. Here’s what the site says about the new network:

We have partnered with content creators in the atheist community to bring engaging and entertaining content to AtheistTV. We are working with experienced producers to develop new, original programming that will launch soon.
If you are interested in developing content or submitting existing content to AtheistTV, please contact us.
Current content partners include: the Richard Dawkins Foundation, the Atheist Community of Austin, American Atheists, The Friendly Atheist, and Keith Lowell Jensen.
So if you have an atheist or skeptical YouTube channel or just want to create a show of your own, now might just be your chance. :) I hope everyone will watch it and give Roku a reason to keep this network going.

Shunning Makes Us Joyful
This one is from Jehovah’s Trumpet, a site that spoofs the Watchtower. Jehovah’s Trumpet is to the Watchtower magazine what The Colbert Report is to Bill O’Reilly’s The Factor. The best part is the comments. Note that lots of people didn’t get the joke. If you were one of them, now you know! Bear in mind that this is the same website that features stories like Conjoined Twin Shuns Brother and Family Repudiates Thursdays.
Note to fellow skeptics and atheists: Remember to use critical thinking skills where applicable!
Evolution: A Satanic Theory
Also from Jehovah’s Trumpet. Same deal as above – lots of people didn’t get the joke. But this article was retweeted by Richard Dawkins and Penn Jillette. :)
Dawkins isn't even an XJW and he gets it!

Seth Andrews: The Ultimate Question
The link above will take you to the whole talk, which belongs as much under the heading of atheism as ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses. The video below takes you to a point in the talk where Seth (from The Thinking Atheist) talks about what it’s like to deal with family and others who look down on you for not believing what they believe. Ex-believers of all stripes should get why that appears here and not just in the atheist news section.
The thing is that many atheists and ex-Witnesses – even ex-Witnesses who still have faith in a deity or religion – have plenty in common. Exxers who bash atheists often miss the commonalities.
Note: If it won’t play in the little box below, or you want it bigger, just click on the button that says “YouTube” at the bottom of the box. :)

Chilliwack family blames RCMP for failing to return their daughter

Jeff Wier and Candis McCarville-Wier are the legal guardians for Cassidy McCarville; Candis is also her biological mother. The teen became a Jehovah’s Witness two years ago but her parents are not followers, and that has been a point of strife between Cassidy and her parents.
Candis says her daughter has taken the religion too far — preaching door to door instead of doing her school work. When she tried to ground Cassidy on Tuesday night, preventing her from going to a Jehovah’s Witness meeting, the teen ran away from home.
Candis McCarville-Wier says she just wants her 15-year-old daughter, who ran away from home after a dispute over being a Jehovah’s Witness, to come home and get counselling. (CBC)
Grammar Nazis take note: the article above is from Canada, so some words may look incorrect to you. No words were actually harmed in writing the article, however.
Blood Transfusions – What are the risks?

The typical Jehovah’s Witness believes that blood transfusions are bad medicine and the equivalent of playing Russian Roulette. They have been so thoroughly indoctrinated about the risks by the Watchtower Society that the mere thought is totally abhorrent to many of them. Oddly enough, it is not unusual to see these irrational fears persist even in former Jehovah’s Witnesses for many years after they leave the Watchtower Society.

Review: “Penny Dreadful”

The cast of Penny Dreadful. On the surface, the first season of Penny Dreadful, by Showtime, is about a group of monster hunters trying to save Mina – the girl from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I think it’s a TV show that most will either love or hate. The critics seem to like it overall, but I know some viewers who have had trouble adapting to how it tells its story. This is understandable. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it or leave it during the first few episodes. Then I figured out what Penny Dreadful was really about and how much I was missing. Even some of its fans have  missed the real point. (Keep reading to find out what that is.)
The most obvious comparison to make with Penny Dreadful is surely League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which did some things well and some things badly. (The ending of League was pure stupid on buttered toast.) Both feature characters and settings from Victorian England. But Penny Dreadful is not a ripoff of League. Or if it is, then it does whatever League was striving for and does it far better.
When I first started to watch the show, I thought it didn’t know where it was going. Now, I realize the show wasn’t the problem. I was. That’s because I didn’t understand the show’s central conflict. You could say that I was paying attention to the wrong things and waiting for the story arc to turn on the wrong axis.
Here’s the secret to Penny Dreadful: It isn’t about killing vampires or rescuing Mina. These are just the things that get the characters working together on screen. Instead, Penny Dreadful is about the monsters within us all. This isn’t unusual by itself, but the show truly revolves around this theme and focuses on it almost exclusively. The battle against external monsters all but slips into the background. If you pay too much attention to this outer conflict, you’ll miss the good stuff and be underwhelmed. There’s only so much I can say without spoiling it for you, but a closer look at the major characters will give you some things to think about when watching the show.

Quotes
We need to learn that, when we come of age, that it's OK to question authority because the truth has nothing to fear from investigation and critical examination. The truth doesn't need to hide and the truth can't be proven to be a lie by investigation. Investigation only reveals more and more about the truth.
