A remark from me on religiously-based persecution complexes

A recent AtheistNexus.org discussion deals with a news article about a woman who was pulled over by an Indiana State Trooper who gave her a ticket for speeding and asked her if she had a church home, if she accepted Jesus as her "personal savior" and handed her a pamphlet from a church that requests that the reader admit to themselves that they are a "sinner" in need of "salvation".   The woman filed a lawsuit against this police officer.  Here is a comment from Deidre that I found to be interesting:

Sigh. Another police officer abusing his authority...say it ain't so.
When I followed Christianity, I never did this. I mean, I shared my faith, but didn't try to 'recruit' people. But, the interesting thing here is that this guy thinks he was just 'doing the Lord's work.' He will not care if he is sued, fined, etc. For there were 'prophets' and followers of Jesus in the Bible, who were thrown in jail for witnessing. They are looked at as heroes of the Christian community. So, this cop still sees this as a victory for 'the Lord,' even if it costs him his job, or secular reputation. I remember thinking along these lines as a Christian, that if I was misunderstood, it's because Jesus was misunderstood, first. (hated is the word he used)

Method to their madness. lol ;)

This police officer may thing that he doing the "work" of his "Lord" and may not care if he is sued or fined.  He probably would use the excuse that "prophets" and followers of Jesus in the Bible were imprisoned for trying to convert other people to Jesus' form of Judaism.  Those Christians who were thrown in prison for "witnessing" are looked at as "heroes" by Christians all over the world.  The policeman may see this as a victory for his "Lord" even if it costs him his job or his secular reputation.  Fundamentalist Christians often go into their persecution complex mode by using that tired old excuse that Jesus was hated and that they would be hated too for preaching the Gospel to people.  Just because someone disagrees with and criticizes the beliefs and practices of your religion and doesn't view the beliefs of your religion as being "true" and don't want to convert to your religion because they disagree with it, that doesn't mean that they "hate" you or are "persecuting" you.

If you can't handle the fact that some people don't agree with you that your religion is the "one and only true religion" and doesn't want to join your religion because they do not view your religion as being "true", then you really have some serious issues that you need to work on.  I do wonder how many Christians would react if Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Laveyan Satanists, Baha'is, Neo-Pagans or Scientologists actively tried to convert Christians to their religions?

Sincerely,

B.W.
