Background[edit]
The album is an example of the crew of SpongeBob SquarePants' eclectic musical tastes. When The Flaming Lips member Wayne Coyne suggested a duet with Justin Timberlake, series creator Stephen Hillenburg responded with, according to Coyne, "I don't want any of those sort of commercial weirdos on there. I don't like those commercial people. I like you guys, and Wilco and Ween."[6] The Flaming Lips performed "SpongeBob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien the night before the film's release on November 19, 2004. During the performance, Wayne Coyne was encased in a giant bubble (similar to zorbs).[7] A music video for the song was filmed as well.[8]

Plot summary[edit]

At the end of the episode, SpongeBob performs a musical about his "Best Day Ever".
SpongeBob's "Best Day Ever" did not turn out as he planned when he had to postpone his activities to help his friends with their problems. He wanted to work at the Krusty Krab, but that plan is ruined by a nematodeinfestation, so he lures the nematodes away by using his nose as a flute. Then, he planned to practice some karate with Sandy, but that plan is ruined because there is a leak in her treedome. SpongeBob fixes it accidentally by stopping the leak with an adhesive karate glove. Next, he wanted to go jellyfishing with Patrick, but Patrick breaks his net, so SpongeBob gives him his old net, which quickly breaks as well. SpongeBob is forced to give his new high technet. Patrick makes a deal to take turns using the net, but instead decides to keep it for himself and does not let SpongeBob jellyfish with him.[2]
SpongeBob's final activity for the day is to go to Squidward's clarinet recital. However, once he meets up with Squidward, he says that he cannot play in the concert because his clarinet reed is broken. Determined not to miss out on this activity as he had done with the others, SpongeBob pulls out one of his teeth to replace the reed. SpongeBob attempts to enter the building, but the doorman will not let him in without a ticket. He tries various methods of sneaking, but at last he is let in because he is on the VIP list. He gets in right as the concert ends.[2]
Towards the end of the episode, SpongeBob is very mad that everything went wrong and gives an elaborate speech about how his "Best Day Ever" has been ruined. However, his friends tell him about how he helped them with their problems out of his kindness and teach him that his "Best Day Ever" is not about "perfect days", but about his friends. To make it up to him, they hold a production in which SpongeBob performs his song, "The Best Day Ever" to complete his day with his friends by his side. After a few hours, SpongeBob is still singing, but his friends are tired and sleepy, and the audience has departed.[2]

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Best Day Everis a conceptsoundtrack albumby the voice cast members of SpongeBob SquarePants. Written by Kenny and musician and producer Andy Paley, it features musical cameos by Brian Wilson, Tommy Ramone, Flaco Jiménez, and others.[4][31][32]The Best Day Everalbum was released on September 12, 2006 to positive reviews from critics.[22]
Production[edit]
The album The Best Day Everwas written by SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny, and producer Andy Paley. Featuring 27 tracks,[22]it was influenced by the 1960s pop music.[23]The record's numerous skits refer to a freeformradio stationcalled WH2O.[23]Kenny's inspiration for the song "My Tighty Whiteys" was "underwear humor".[4]Kenny said "Underwear humor is always a surefire laugh-getter with kids [...] Just seeing a character that odd wearing really prosaic, normal, Kmart, three-to-a-pack underwear is a funny drawing [...] We thought it was funny to make a really lush, beautiful love song to his underwear."[4]
In addition to the cast, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, NRBQ's Al Anderson, Joey Spampinato, Tom Ardolino, and Terry Adams, and Tommy Ramoneof the Ramoneswere musical guest artists.[33]Kenny said, on the musical cameos, that "We thought they would spread some magic dust on it. And although this is just a weird little cartoon record, I didn't want to have today's equivalent of Kajagoogooor Men Without Hatson it."[34]He opined that "the people we got" are "kind of timeless."[34]Other musicians who contributed to the album were Dave Allen, Don Allen, Mandy Barnett, Jerry Blavat, Mike Bolger, Corky Hale, Lisa Hammon, Flaco Jiménez, James King, Tommy Morgan, Jillinda Palmer, Herb Peterson, Nino Tempo, Mike Uhler, and Jeremy Wakefield.[4][33][34]
Brian Wilson provided backing vocalsfor the song "Doin' the Krabby Patty".[4][31]Originally, Kenny and Paley were working on a "Brian Wilson-esque" song with "Brian Wilson-esque" background vocals on it.[4]Kenny said "and at the last minute, we had this opportunity to reach out to him and ask if he'd do it [...] But Brian's people said he was going on to Hawaii the next day with his wife and kids, and then going on the road." Eventually, Kenny got a call from Wilson saying that "I loved the idea."[4]Elvis Presley's guitarist James Burtonperformed the guitar in the song "You Will Obey".[34]Kenny said "One of our hidden Easter eggs that hopefully more than three people in the world will get is during the guitar solo when Plankton says 'Take it, James', which was what Elvis said in every one of those concert movies."[34]
Reception[edit]
The album received mostly positive reviews. AllMusicgave the album a score of 4 out of 5.[22]In his review for the IGN, Spence D. gave the album a 7/10 score rating it as "good".[29]He said, "parents who grew up in the late '50s and '60s will get a kick out of the musical tributes to the music of those eras and perhaps listen along with their kids during a family fun time extravaganza."[29]Geoffrey Himes of the Baltimore City Papersaid "How do little kids respond to this record? I wouldn't know; there aren't any little kids in my house. You don't have to be a parent to enjoy the killer hooks and lush harmonies on this disc. All you need is the courage to ignore the raised eyebrows of your friends."[26]Kerwin So of Common Sense Mediagave the album a score of 4/5. However, So claimed that the album is full of consumerism and said "Parents need to know that although the physical packaging of this CD contains a lot of advertisements for other SpongeBob products, the songs themselves contain very positive content and steer clear of commercialism."[27]
Chris Willman of the Entertainment Weeklyopined that the album is "not quite a teenage symphony to God."[28]He called the song "My Tighty Whiteys" "the most obvious nod to the Pet Soundssound."[28]According to him, "[the] two of the best songs are garage-rock anthems" which includes "Under My Rock" and "You Will Obey".[28]Willman said that Plankton's performance in the latter "sounds like a little like Eric Burdon, from the Animals, turned fascist." He gave it an "A-" rating and recommended it for ages "4 to… 94!"[28]In a 2014 review, The A.V. Clubranked The Best Day Everalbum No.3 in their list of "13 novelty albums recorded by TV characters". The publication called it "a charming throwback" when "TV character novelty albums have faded away in recent years."[23]

Plot[edit]
The player, as SpongeBob, runs the Krusty Krab. Both Mr. Krabs and Plankton both want to cook for Jack Kahuna Laguna's Beach Party. Since they can't come to an agreement, Jack demands a competition to see which cook is the best. The winner would get to serve their food at the party. SpongeBob is adamant on the Krusty Krab winning but he needs help since they don't have much staff. Plankton's cousins want to help him, but since he won't pay them anything, SpongeBob recruits them and tells them that Mr. Krabs will pay if they want to help him in the competition Throughout the game you will play through 5 "Episodes", Each with a new judge after every 3 Workdays, and a New theme for the Krusty Krab. The player will then need to help SpongeBob train a group of Plankton’s cousins to become the best chefs in Bikini Bottom.. Throughout the game, the player helps SpongeBob and his friends train them to cook multiple foods like the Krabby Patty,Fried Seaweed Sandwiches and many more. The player works on a daily schedule to serve a number of customers before being done for the day. Each customer asks for certain orders that you must fulfill by performing several mini-games related to the dish. High-scoring dishes receive larger tips, which can be used to buy more recipes or skills for the Plankton helpers.[2]
Gameplay[edit]
The game consists of cooking mini-games, similar to Cooking Mama, and restaurant management. The player oversees the staff of Planktons as they work to fill the orders of the day. Occasionally, the player will be asked to help a Plankton complete a task by playing a mini-game representing a cooking activity. In all, there are 25 different mini-games that are used to represent tasks like slicing, stirring, whisking, and garnishing. [3]
The game also has a multiplayer mode, in which the player who prepares the dish in the least amount of time is the winner. The graphics are decent for a DS. They are a bit granulated, but apart from that, the characters are appropriately designed. The main characters including the Plankton's are clear but in some cases there is a little too much pixelation and it gets a bit difficult to differentiate food items and characters. The cast was available for voice overs, but in the game it's primarily SpongeBob who is talking. In some scenes they just just nod and agree with what is being said but usually the other characters barely talk and just stand there which gives the game a repetitive sort of feel and makes the player feel strange.
While the Planktons do most of the work during the regular shifts, challenges where the player must prepare an entire recipe on their own are unlocked after a few shifts. The player can also buy new recipes, manage the menu, and decorate the restaurant.[3]
Since it is a Nintendo DS game, everything is controlled with the touch-screen. Almost everything you do will rely on dragging, flicking, tapping, which is done using the stylus on the screen. The stacking of the burger for example would require the user to drag the ingredients and place them in a specific order while the tossing of the salad would be achieved by flicking the vegetables in the air and catching them in a bowl.[4]
Overall, the game is above average. It's engaging for children and does its fair share to help hone adolescents skills and their reflexes. SpongeBob fans will love the graphics and sounds, which do a great job of conveying their favorite cartoon character in a positive and cheerful manner.
Reception[edit]
Beach Party Cook-Off received mixed reviews from critics. Common Sense Media gave the game 3/5 stars based on 5 reviews, Metacritic Metascore gave the game a 53/100 from 3 reviews. GameTrailers gave the game a 7.2/10.

History[edit]
The SpongeBob SquarePants characters had appeared before in comic stories within Nickelodeon Magazine and Tokyopop's Cinemanga series, but they never featured in their own comic book until SpongeBob Comics, which was announced by creator Stephen Hillenburg in November 2010. Debuting in February 2011, the series is published by United Plankton Pictures in association with Bongo Comics.[1] Along with Hillenburg, independent comic creators who contributed to the first issue include James Kochalka, Hilary Barta, Graham Annable, Gregg Schigiel, and Jacob Chabo.[2][3] Issue number 13, a Halloween special, was released in October 2012 featuring the work of such writers and artists as Stephen R. Bissette, Tony Millionaire, Al Jaffee, and Derek Drymon.[4] Another Halloween-themed issue was released the following year featuring cartoonist Michael T. Gilbert.[5]
In June 2013, United Plankton released Spongebob Annual-Size Super-Giant Swimtacular #1. Managing editor Chris Duffy said the annual was "specially tailored" for superhero fans, with a cover by artist Jacob Chabot that was influenced by the Marvel Comics annuals of the 1960s.[5] Collaborators for the book included Drymon, Kochalka, Barta, Ramona Fradon, Chuck Dixon, Jerry Ordway, and Vincent Deporter.[6] A second superhero-inspired annual was released in June 2014.[7]
Reception[edit]
In a review of the premiere issue, Chad Nevett of Comic Book Resources wrote: "SpongeBob Comics is effective at capturing the tone of the show and allowing the creators to present their own takes on the characters at times. It suffers sometimes from not being able to rely on the strengths of animation and, hopefully, will take advantage of the things that comics can do that animation can't".[8]
Brigid Alverson of Comic Book Resources described Spongebob Annual-Size Super-Giant Swimtacular #1 as "48 pages of pure summer vacation fun that is goofy enough to be fun for kids and smart enough to entertain adults as well."[6] Writing for School Library Journal, J. Caleb Mozzocco said that although the longer page-count and higher price tag of the SpongeBob annual might make it a "less-than-ideal" jumping-on point, he added that "the superhero parody content ironically makes it an even easier comic for comics readers with no experience with the cartoon to enjoy."[9]

Role in SpongeBob SquarePants[edit]
The Krusty Krab is a restaurant that sells various greasy fast food products at extraordinarily high prices, including the popular "Krabby Patty" burgers.[2] The Krusty Krab took its name from the Rusty Krab, a retirement home in Bikini Bottom acquired by Mr. Krabs in 1965 and converted into a restaurant.[3] However, another episode claims that it got its name from a pirate ship named the Krusty Krab.
The Krusty Krab is owned and operated by Eugene Krabs with Squidward Tentacles as the cashier and SpongeBob SquarePants as the fry cook.[4]
The Krusty Krab is one of the most successful restaurants in Bikini Bottom.[3] The Krabby Patty formula is a closely guarded trade secret, and rival restaurateur Sheldon Plankton's futile attempts at acquiring the secret formula (as well as the often absurd lengths Mr. Krabs will go to protect it) is a major recurring theme throughout the series. The Krusty Krab usually attracts customers from Bikini Bottom because of the Krabby Patty's renowned taste and the fact that Plankton's restaurant, the Chum Bucket, has a menu consisting of mostly inedible chum.[5] Because of this lack of viable competition, Mr. Krabs is free to engage in price gouging, which he usually does.[6] It was noted that the Krusty Krab is clean and disease-free.[7]
Stephen Hillenburg's original name for the Krusty Krab was the "Crusty Crab," but he thought the K's were funnier. The building's design is based on a New England lobster trap.[citation needed]
Cultural influence[edit]
The Krusty Krab has appeared in Robot Chicken in its episode "Major League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" where the Krusty Krab serves Krabby Patties which are made of crab, calamari rings, and chicken of the sea salad which is tuna.
In an episode of Red Sox Small Talk, John Ferrell was featured and was fielded with "tough" questions like "What is your favorite musician?" and "Is managing the Red Sox like managing the Krusty Krab on SpongeBob SquarePants?"[8] He replied that "managing the Krusty Krab and the Red Sox are similar in some ways."[9][10]
Merchandising[edit]
In 2006, Lego released the Lego SpongeBob SquarePants set based on the Krusty Krab.[11] The second Krusty Krab based Lego set called the "Krusty Krab Adventures" was released in 2009.[12][13]
Replica[edit]
A replica of the Krusty Krab is currently being built in Ramallah, Palestine.[14]
