One thing I have found amazing is how, you can pick up any story, fairytale, movie, novel, and they almost always have some life lesson, something to really gain from it It's been bothering me that some of the bible stories have nothing! What can you learn from lot? I mean really let's zoom out of just the salt pillar story The only family in the whole town that loves Jehovah is visited by two angles and told to flee the town While they're there the town demands they send there guests out because they want to have sex with them, So lot offers his daughters instead.... Then once they flee the mother turns back and turns into salt then the daughters decide they want babies so they get the father really drunk and sleep with him So the moral of the story is? And don't even get me started on Noah

I always hated the story of Lot. What kind of father offers to let a raging mob rape his daughters? And that's held out as being righteous! Makes me sick.

Are you thinking of the one where a man's concubine leaves him and goes back to her father? He follows her and stays the night with the family. Same thing. A mob comes threatening to rape the guest so the father throws his daughter out to them instead. The mob abuses her so badly she dies from her injuries. The man takes her body and cuts it up into twelve pieces, demanding vengeance. It starts a war and nearly wipes out an entire tribe. I've forgotten what Bible book that's in. Horrible, horrible disgusting story. No wonder most churches don't tell it.

I no longer find the bible as a whole, and the old testament specifically, to be of any use in my life. They were established as a history of the beliefs and culture of the people who inhabit the Middle East even today, and the scriptures reflect the same standards of behavior and punishment to women as ruled by the muslim religion. I fail to understand what makes the bible worth being called "holy" any more than the Koran, the Book of Mormon, the Talmud, or any other writings considered holy by the people who use them to dictate their lives. studying

I'm with you, Cangie. There are some good things in the Bible, but they got lost under all the nasty or ignorant bits. Did you know Thomas Jefferson edited the Gospals? He admired the teachings of Jesus but edited out the miracles and supernatural stuff. Jefferson had no use for organized religion and cosidered himself a deist: maybe there is a creator, but if there is he put mankind on earth and left us to find our own way. Either way, it does no good to practice any sort of organized religion, since God doesn't care anyway.

Honestly , since I have let my mind be open to learning I'm not sure I even believe there's a god. But if there is.... It goes back to the same question everyone asks... Why? Why does he allow the world to be how it is? And don't give me that Adam and Eve poopy..... Why does it continue? How can a being with a brain allow this? And if here exists and allows it anyway, then I want nothing to do with him

I totally agree. Once you take a step back and really look at the bible's stories, they seem like archaic myths. Justifying violence and abuse hardly makes you feel like there is a balanced god with a "plan" for mankind. It just amazes me anyone takes it seriously any more.

It's no justification but women were expected to die during childbirth or from infections afterwards.
Women also died from bad menstrual hygiene. So men were often having several wives over their lives to have large families. Often more than one wife was just an insurance policy I'd imagine.
It's why I think women are looked down upon in many old religions. Life expectancy was short and many died. Women are more of a tradable commodity instead. The agricultural work was very heavy and women are not strong enough to do it.
So they're relegated to a low position in society. They can't work as hard as men in the field, they died early on average and that was the norm for centuries.
I think that's why there's such a low value placed on women from bronze age religions.
But then a God should see past the circumstance and provide laws to show respect. It's not there in the bible, so it's not divine.

A book written by men for men isn't going to hold women high up on a pedestal .... however in saying that, the bible is fictional to me!

I hated that story of Dinah...because the guy was the one who started making eyes at her first but because she reciprocated the attention at the end of the day it was all her fault because she was a dirty whore. Really? Why are women always getting the short end of the stick? And it took me forever to realize just how messed up this story was because it used to be my favorite.

Nevermind - Can you please explain to me how women died from "bad menstrual hygiene"? I don't think I have ever heard of that before.
Please enlighten me.
Thank you. *eh...never mind, nevermind. I looked it up. You are right. Men have always taken advantage of womens' physical vulnerability. Menstration and childbirth has always been the bane of women. Good thing women are stronger in other areas other than physical or the human species would be extinct.

One of the sickest stories in the bible is when the most holy beloved king david has the hots for a woman who is married to one of his soldiers, so when her husband is off fighting, most holy king david knocks up the soldiers wife, then in order to cover his ass he has the soldier killed. Then Jehovah kills the baby to punish king david.
But the whole adam and eve and tree of life story takes the cake from the get go, IMO.

I think the story that I hated most in the bible besides the concubine one,is the story of Job. I mean what the hell god, you're going to physically and psychologically torture somebody that you consider a friend just so that you can win a bet against the devil and gloat????? Poor Job, it's like he has stockholm syndrome throughout the whole story.
Now that I write it down it kinda makes god seem like he's Ramsay Bolton.......and I guess Job would be Theon.
Still messed up.

Kefka, I love it! A new evil character to compare the Bible god with, Ramsay Bolton! That Game of Thrones character is one Bad ass psychopath! I think he might out-horrible Hitler to which I've been known to compare Jehovah with.
And Theon....nobody deserves what he got. Job didn't deserve what he got either.
Good analogy

@whytebyrd I've heard of people comparing god to hitler, but I always thought he was kinda like a psychotic Santa clause for adults you know
like' he sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been bad or good, so be good OR HE'LL KILL YOU.'

I've done a bit of a sweep of the "revised" NWT over the past few days (I say "revised" because, for the most part, it is as much of a revision as the 1985 revision was of the original 1950 version). Frankly I was expecting a lot more.
The text generally reads the same in most places. There is no change to the clunky English and there is no attempt to capture the Hebrew rhythm in poetry. Except for the list of changes and additions announced at the Annual Meeting (i.e., "ass" is now "donkey," a few more additional uses of "Jehovah," etc.) there is little less to add here. Unlike what one of the speakers promised in saying this would be 'an entirely new translation,' it is, for the most part, a rather boring and unsurprising update.
The updating made to the vocabulary seems to be lifted from the choices made in the New Revised Standard Version, released in 1989. Except for the minor change to words regarding Jesus' being "impaled" (which are unique to the NWT historically and etymologically incorrect rendition for language about the crucifixion), all the other "modern" word choices seem to be shamelessly copied from the NRSV and its list of changes it made to the RSV vocabulary over 20 years ago. All the new language is what is found in all the major versions in one way or another, so the NWT offers a stale update of a presentation.
It is also very inconsistent in its update, never uniform. For example, while claims are made that the update is meant to be modern and conscious of renditions sensitive to inclusive gender, the first place this should occur, Genesis 1:26, still reads as it did before. "Let us make man in our image" is still offered unlike the modern "Let us make human beings in our image" as found in the NRSV, the New Jerusalem Bible, and the 2011 revision to the official US Catholic translation, the NABRE. This may be the one place where there is little to debate that the word "man" refers to humanity, yet the GB misses the mark, right out of the gate too! It is a "pick-and-choose" of NRSV vocabulary lifts that the NWT presents after this point.
As I stated it is, for the most part, a rather boring update. But there are three changes which don't make sense unless the Governing Body is about to spring a couple of new teachings on the unsuspecting JW population.
The first is the change from Sheol and Hades to "grave." Instead of strengthening the current view of JW eschatology it weakens it. Outside of the NRSV, this is the current usage and understanding of these words in Christian churches and among Jews. The NABRE, for example, uses "netherworld" for Hades almost always throughout the New Testament. Readers of the NRSV (which uses Sheol in the OT and Hades in NT) already understand that this means the common grave.
The second is the change of "soul" to read as it does in context, almost identically with the way it is rendered in the NRSV. In Genesis 2:7 the updated NWT reads like the NRSV, NJB, and the NABRE: "The man became a living person." The rest of the usages of soul through Scripture are similar to the major Christian churches and Judaism (the modern JPS Tanakh version reads likewise).
The last is John 17:3. Several Watchtower publications and many discourses and studies throughout the years have been based on the older NWT reading: "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God." For decades the leaders of the JWs have ridiculed Christians for translating this verse the way the updated NWT now reads: "This means everlasting life, their coming to know you..." Since the religion of the JWs is a scholastic exercise void of spirituality that has been based on the older NWT reading, it is now interesting to see how the GB's choice to render this like Christendom's religions do will change things.
Except for the overuse of the Divine Name, the updated NWT is basically a poor reflection of modern translations and an inconsistent attempt at modern language usage. The translation is still stale and very hard to read. Compare it with the "literal as possible, free as necessary" NRSV and see how it is supposed to be done. In fact, JWs will be embarrassed should they compare their "new" Bible with either it or the other revised translations and see how smooth and easy-to-understand they are by comparison (the new NIV is another example).
The one thing this "revision" has got me wondering is: We will see the Governing Body do a major change over to more traditional Christianity like the Worldwide Church of God did? Their Bible is practically the same to those previously "incorrect" versions. If their Bibles are now almost the same in rendition, does this signal that they are about to make their doctrine just as similar? The GB did recently tell the JWs to follow their instruction even if it flies in the face of human reasoning, as they know it.
Hmmm, we shall see.

So did they just paraphrase as in your example?
Or are there any changes with real doctrinal significance?

So glad you posted this! I had no idea there was a new JW bible out. It's funny how the society gets followers so excited about such small things. Anything to keep them blinded.
