Plot summary[edit]
Mr. Krabs discovers a lot people are visiting the beach, so he decided to go to sell them Krabby Patties. When SpongeBob, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs are on a surfboard, they meet up with Patrick and Sandy. Patrick tries to climb onto the board, but he causes it to tip, it collides into a large wave and sweeps the five friends up into separate places: SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward go to an island with young surfers, Mr. Krabs ends up stranded in the middle of the sea with his cash register "Cashie", and Sandy is taken to a small island where she built a helicopter from the supplies.
SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward are told by the young surfers in the island that the only way to get back to Bikini Bottom is to surf there; unfortunately they do not know how to. Twitch, one of the surfers, tells them that there is one person who can teach them how to surf, Jack Kahuna Laguna. After they find the where is Jack Kahuna Laguna, he comes out of his hut and surfs on an enormous surfboard which astonishes the three. He later says that they have to ride a wave called "The Big One", in order to get back home. They practice surfing for some time, then get ready to ride "The Big One". Before they set off, Jack Kahuna Laguna announces that the Big One demands a sacrifice.
SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward ride the wave and they see Mr. Krabs. He jumps up onto the board and drops Cashie into the ocean, so Jack Kahuna Laguna goes to retrieve it and acts as the sacrifice. SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward are seen flying on the surfboard and approach Goo Lagoon. Sandy's helicopter crash-lands in Goo Lagoon. A welcome home party has been thrown for SpongeBob, and Jack Kahuna Laguna returns with Cashie, which he returns to Mr. Krabs.
Production[edit]
Actor Johnny Depp, shown here in 2011, guest starred in the episode as Jack Kahuna Laguna, among others.
The episode "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" was written by Aaron Springer, Paul Tibbitt, and Steven Banks. Andrew Overtoom and Alan Smart served as animation directors, and Springer worked as storyboard director. The episode originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on April 17, 2009 as part of the series' tenth anniversary celebration.[1][2][3] During its release, it was also simulcast on Nickelodeon Mobile.[4] TurboNick, the online broadband player of Nickelodeon, also featured a sneak peek of the episode, short form video content, episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants and an instant replay following its on-air premiere.[4]
In addition to the regular cast, American actor and musician Johnny Depp guest starred in the episode as the voice of Jack Kahuna Laguna, a surf guru that taught SpongeBob how to surf.[5][6][7][8] According to Sarah Noonan, vice president of talent and casting for Nickelodeon, Depp accepted the role because he and his kids are fans of the show.[9] Nickelodeon animation president Brown Johnson said "We're excited to have Johnny Depp guest star on the SpongeBob TV special that kicks off the series 10th anniversary celebration[...] This is a big year for our porous pal, and some of the biggest celebrities are helping us honor him in a special way throughout the year."[10][11] Other guests included American musician and The Monkees' Davy Jones who starred in the episode as himself, appearing at the bottom of the sea with his locker,[12][13] and Bruce Brown providing vocal cameo as the episode's narrator.[14]
On March 3, 2009, the episode became available on DVD as Paramount Home Entertainment and Nickelodeon announced its release.[15][16] It was also included in the series' season six DVD compilation;[17][18] alongside the 2009 television film Truth or Square.[17]
Reception[edit]
The premiere of the episode on April 17, 2009 drew an estimated 5.8 million viewers,[19][20] and was 1.6 million higher than the highest-rated SpongeBob of the previous week, which aired April 11. The episode was Nickelodeon's fifth highest-rated telecast in total viewers so far that year and garnered significant ratings increases among all kid and tween demographics.[21]
The episode received mostly positive reviews. Carey Bryson of the About.com said that "parents will also be pleased, as the episode contains no rude words or inappropriate jokes."[22] In his review for the Blogcritics, Maddy Pumilia wrote "Like most SpongeBob episodes, this episode was comic genius. I especially enjoyed Mr. Krabs' love affair with his cash register, Cashy. It's hilarious. Best part of the show, in my opinion."[23] Ian Jane of DVD Talk said "[the episode] is absolutely worth a watch thanks to the series high standard of quality, quirky animation, and multilayered humor."[24] Erich Asperschlager of DVD Verdict called the episode "a fun take on beach bunny surf fare, and is backed by a decent sextet of recent SpongeBob adventures."[25] David Hinckly of the New York Daily News gave the episode 4/5 stars and said "It's all good when you never forget to have fun."[26] The Daily Mirror described the vocal appearance of Johnny Depp as "totally wavelicious (or something)."[6] LJ Perez of News Observer said that the character of Johnny Depp "looks more like Patrick Swayze's surfing bank robber from the so-bad-it's-good movie 'Point Break' than he does any character Depp has ever portrayed.[27]
In 2010, the episode was nominated at the Golden Reel Awards for Best Sound Editing: Television Animation.[28] It has also been nominated at the 37th Annie Awards for Best Home Entertainment Production for its DVD release.[29][30]
Lesley Aeschiliman of Yahoo! Voices wrote "This year [2009] is SpongeBob SquarePants' tenth anniversary, and I hate to say it, but SpongeBob has really been showing his age recently. This special was not worth being part of such a milestone year for a television series."[31]
The DVD received mostly positive reviews. In his review from TV Shows on DVD, Gord Lacey said that the video quality is "fairly good" and the audio was "decent, but the surround track from earlier releases is better."[32] Danny Cox of Inside Pulse said that the full screen format "look very good" and "Dolby Digital Stereo Sound and also come through sounding great."[33]

The book titled Surf's Up, SpongeBob! was written by David Lewman, and was published by Simon Spotlight/Nickelodeon.[36][37][38]

Plot summary[edit]
It is laundry day, and SpongeBob is drying a whole load of his "square pants". But while his pants are in the dryer, SpongeBob gets distracted by Patrick who makes funny whistling sound. Eventually, SpongeBob goes to check on his pants which apparently all shrunk in the dryer. Upon hearing that there will not be another shipping of "square pants" for months, SpongeBob tries out several different styles of pants at the mall. He finally chooses a pair of "round pants".[2]
Spongebob shows Patrick his new pants. However, Patrick is too stupid to recognize him due to the new pants; he believes Spongebob can only be Spongebob if he has "square pants". Spongebob thinks about this as talks with others, who jokingly say they don't know who he is. Feeling discouraged by the idea that nobody knows who he is, SpongeBob decides to start a new life as "SpongeBob RoundPants", to which he decides to re-apply to his job at the Krusty Krab. When he meets Squidward at the restaurant, SpongeBob acts as if this is his first time applying at the Krusty Krab and has never met Squidward before. Squidward decides to take advantage of this by training SpongeBob to act like him, a horrible employee, in hopes that SpongeBob will later get fired. After a series of complaints from the customers, Mr. Krabs confronts SpongeBob for his lousy work, to which SpongeBob explains that since he has new pants, he is no longer "SpongeBob SquarePants". Mr. Krabs as him "what kind of idiot told you that?" as Patrick is then seen. He then convinces SpongeBob that he should take his pants off. SpongeBob, no longer wearing pants, then continues to be himself and go back to being a good employee. However, when Sandy comes in seeing SpongeBob in his underwear, SpongeBob freaks out again after Sandy calls him "SpongeBob UnderPants".[2]
Production[edit]
"To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants" was written by Luke Brookshier, Nate Cash, and Steven Banks, and was directed by Alan Smart. Brookshier and Cash also functioned as storyboard directors.[3] The episode originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on July 17, 2009, with a TV-Y7 parental rating.[1]
The episode was a part of the network's tenth anniversary celebration of SpongeBob SquarePants.[4][5] Starting July 17, 2009 at 8:00 pm EDT, Nickelodeon aired a 50-hour SpongeBob marathon titled "The Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash Weekend".[6][7] The marathon started with the premiere of "To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants" at 8 pm.[8][9]
On July 21, 2009, the episode became available on the DVD compilation of the same name,[10] along with fellow sixth season episodes "Squid's Visit", "The Splinter", "Slide Whistle Stooges", "Boating Buddies", "The Krabby Kronicle", "The Slumber Party", and "Grooming Gary".[11][12][13] "To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants" was also released on the series' season six DVD compilation.[14]
Reception[edit]
The episode and its DVD release received positive reviews. Paul Mavis of DVD Talk positively responded to the episode and wrote that "There are laughs in 'To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants.'"[11] Gordon Sullivan of DVD Verdict gave the episode a score of 5 out of 10 and said "[the episode] was one of the slighter entries [on the DVD], with the core joke being fairly well-handled with no one recognizing SpongeBob, but it went on just a little too long.[15] April Pohren of the Blogcritics said "[the episode] is original and comical."[16]

Plot[edit]
SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) realizes that the Krusty Krab restaurant is celebrating its "eleventy seventh" (one hundred and seventeenth) anniversary. He remembers his first visit to the Krusty Krab and tells Gary about it. SpongeBob then leaves to go to the Krusty Krab, but as soon as he exits his house, he bumps into the back of a long line of customers waiting to get to the restaurant as well. SpongeBob jumps on top of every person in the line, then eventually reaches the Krusty Krab.
Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) tells SpongeBob and Squidward (Rodger Bumpass) that it is a perfect opportunity for his business rival, Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Mr. Krabs has hired Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) as a security guard, so that he does not have to pay for a real one, and SpongeBob spectacularly decorates the Krusty Krab. Patrick, Squidward and Mr. Krabs follow SpongeBob into the freezer where he shows them a giant Krabby Patty ice sculpture which he made himself. However, in attempt to take the ice sculpture outside, they accidentally knock SpongeBob out the open freezer door; he then rebounds off the kitchen door and back into the freezer. The impact shuts the door and it locks, trapping all four friends inside. Mr. Krabs remembers that there is a way to escape without using the door, which is through the ventilation system. While finding their way through the maze of air vents, they look back at some memorable moments in their lives.
To get out of the air shaft, SpongeBob molds Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs into a battering ram to bust out the shaft, and he finally makes it out, only to find that all the customers have left after waiting for so long without getting any food. However, SpongeBob summons them all back as he sings a song in honour of the Krusty Krab. Meanwhile, Plankton finally finds the perfect opportunity to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula. He fails, having been caught by Mr. Krabs. The eleventy seventh anniversary celebration then goes ahead.

Writing and music[edit]
Truth or Square was written by Luke Brookshier, Nate Cash, Steven Banks, and Paul Tibbitt. The writers have described the television film as "Seinfeld-esque" that parodies the recycled flashback episodes seen in Seinfeld, Friends and other US shows.[1][2] The featured song, "We've Got Scurvy", was sung by American singer and actress Pink.[2][3]
Cast[edit]
The film stars the series main cast members including Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, Clancy Brown, Carolyn Lawrence, and Mr. Lawrence. In addition to the series cast, it featured Rosario Dawson, Craig Ferguson, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, LeBron James, Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, and Robin Williams (and Constantine from Muppets Most Wanted on the Future DVD releases) as guest actors appearing as themselves in the live-action sequences, while Ricky Gervais provided vocal cameo as the narrator.[4][5][6][7][8] Nickelodeon animation president Brown Johnson said "Over the past decade, SpongeBob has become one of the most beloved characters in television history[...] And we're excited to cap off the year's celebration with this star-studded special anniversary event."[4]
Directing and animating[edit]
From left, Painty the Pirate as seen on the original and on the film.
Andrew Overtoom, Alan Smart, and Tom Yasumi served as the film's animation directors. The film was a part of the series' tenth anniversary celebration.[9][10]
The title sequence of SpongeBob for the film was made exclusively for the series' tenth anniversary.[11] It was animated in stop motion animation, with Cee Lo Green performing the theme.[4][12][13] Mark Caballero, Seamus Walsh and Chris Finnegan of Screen Novelties, in 2009, animated its opening titles.[11][14][15] Finnegan claimed that the crew were "thrill[ed]" to do the title sequence because "the original title sequence is so recognizable and everyone seen it over and over and it's so great in its own way."[11] Executive producer and the episode's writer Paul Tibbitt said "We don't just want to redraw it [the original title sequence], we want it to be something special and different[...] So we thought we would do it in three dimensions[...]"[11] Nickelodeon animation president Brown Johnson lauded the new title sequence and said it is "SO great!"[16] Some traditional animation on scraps of brown paper are intermixed into the stop motion.[11]
Tibbitt said that the "biggest surprise" for him in the new title sequence was "the treatment of Painty the Pirate in the beginning" as seen in a fortune teller machine.[11] Mark Caballero, one of its animators, explained "our idea was like our goal is like the more disturbing, the better because I don't think there is a fortune telling machine out there that doesn't disturb when you see it.[11] Tibbitt said "it was a great idea[...] I was just expecting maybe a 3D version of the painting but we got something totally different and it's very cool."[11]
Release[edit]
In a press release, Nickelodeon officially announced the film on October 13, 2009.[4] According to the network, the film include "SpongeBob's first visit to the Krusty Krab as a baby, a vintage Krusty Krab TV commercial, how SpongeBob found his beloved pineapple house and the time that SpongeBob and Sandy got married!"[17][18][19] Prior to the official announcement of the television film, Entertainment Weekly broke the news by releasing a clip featuring a scene from the film where SpongeBob and Sandy getting married.[20][21]
The film originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on November 6, 2009, along with "The Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash" marathon, Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants documentary, and a special SpongeBob episode entitled "To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants".[22]
On November 10, 2009, the film was released on the DVD compilation of the same name in the United States and Canada,[23] on November 16, 2009 in region 2,[24] and on October 29, 2009 in region 4.[25] The DVD consists of five season six episodes, a short called Behind the Scenes of the SpongeBob Opening, and karaoke-mode songs: "F.U.N.", "Campfire Song", and "We've Got Scurvy".[26] It was also released in the series' season six DVD compilation,[27][28] alongside 24 other episodes including the special episode "SpongeBob vs. The Big One".[27]
Marketing[edit]
In 2009, Burger King tied-in with Nickelodeon to release a toyline based on the film. The toyline features SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Plankton, Gary, and a Jellyfishin' SpongeBob.[29]
The book titled The Great Escape! that was a tie-in to the film was released. The book was written by Emily Sollinger, published by Simon Spotlight/Nickelodeon, and was released on September 8, 2009.[30][31] Another tie-in book to the film was also released.[32][33] The book titled Good Times! was written by Erica David, illustrated by the Artifacts Group, and published by Simon Spotlight/Nickelodeon. Good Times! was first released on September 8, 2009, then in 2011.[33][34]
Reception[edit]
Ratings[edit]
The premiere of SpongeBob's Truth or Square on Friday, November 6 drew 7.7 million total viewers, ranking as basic cable's number-one entertainment show for the week.[35] It was also ranked as the week's number one program among children in the demographic groups ages 6–11 and 2-11.[36]
Critical response[edit]
Tom Kenny was awarded at the 37th Annie Awards for his performance as the voice of the titular character.
The film received mixed critical response from critics and fans alike. Nancy Basile of the About.com gave the film positive reviews and wrote "I had doubts that the recent Truth or Square special of SpongeBob SquarePants would be funny or clever. I was quite wrong." She added that "My kids and I were mesmerized."[37] Jose Strike of the Animation World Network positively reacted to the film and wrote "Truth or Square is a major treat; in fact, I'm so happy I think I'll drop on the deck and flop like a fish..."[38] Ian Jane of DVD Talk said "Truth or Square isn't your typical episode, as it mixes up a lot of live action material in with the more traditional animated sequences to very unusual effect."[39] He added "[...]but there's enough here in terms of the gags and the jokes that even if it's not a classic episode, it's still one worth seeing."[39] Nickelodeon animation president Brown Johnson said that the film is her favorite among the series.[16]
However, the film was not immune to negative reception, and was criticized mainly due to the "Patchy the Pirate" segments. Paul Mavis from DVD Talk said "Truth or Square is a strange mix of some truly memorable animated SpongeBob moments interrupted unfortunately by the largely unfunny Patchy the Pirate segments."[26] He added "All of those amusing moments in Truth or Square, along with the A Charlie Brown Christmas ending, make one forget the patchy Patchy segments in Truth or Square."[26] Roy Hrab of DVD Verdict gave the episode a negative review saying "Wow... This is without a doubt the lamest SpongeBob episode I have ever seen[...] In fact, nothing interesting happens at all. The Patchy interludes and reliance on cameos merely draws attention to the episode's lack of substance."[40]
In 2010, Tom Kenny won at the 37th Annie Awards for Best Voice Acting in a Television Production category for his performance as the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants in the film.[41][42]

Plot summary[edit]
King Neptune wants to celebrate his 5,000th birthday at the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob and the crew spare no expense for the gala, rolling out the red carpet to welcome the royal family. Despite the party itself, the king's spirits are brought down by the absence of his son, Triton, spoiling the festivities for everyone, especially his wife, Queen Amphitrite. Triton was banished to a cage on the deserted Island in the Sky, until he is ready to be a proper god, having displeased his father with his growing interests in the mortal world.
Determined to make this the king's happiest birthday ever and save the day, SpongeBob sets out to find Triton and bring him to the party. Once found, Triton initially ignores SpongeBob, but after smelling SpongeBob's terribly smelly breath, he tells him to undo the lock. Unable to figure it out, SpongeBob calls his best friend, Patrick, to help out. Patrick unlocks Triton's cell, and the Prince escapes the island. No one anticipates Triton's wrath, Triton destroys Bikini Bottom. Noticing that something is wrong at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob and Patrick enter the building from the back, discovering the guests and staff locked in a cage. When Patrick unlocks the cell, Triton attempts to escape his father, who catches up to him. King Neptune can't tolerate his son's wrongdoings, but on seeing how Triton destroyed Bikini Bottom, is pleased that he's finally using powers, becoming a worthy successor. The family leaves for home, with King Neptune crediting SpongeBob for this development; the townsfolk of Bikini Bottom see differently, chasing him and Patrick in an angry mob.
Production[edit]
"The Clash of Triton" was written by Casey Alexander, Zeus Cervas, Aaron Springer, Steven Banks, and Paul Tibbitt, and was directed by Andrew Overtoom and Alan Smart. Alexander, Cervas, and Springer also served as storyboard directors.[3] Writer Banks said that the writing crew "liked the idea of gods and of Triton as an angry teenager dealing with his father. It all goes back to Greek tragedy."[4] The episode originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on July 5, 2010.[5][6]
The episode guest starred John O'Hurley (left), Victoria Beckham (center), and Sebastian Bach (right).
In addition to the regular cast, English singer Victoria Beckham guest starred in the episode as the wife of King Neptune, Queen Amphitrite.[7][8][9] The writers created the role of a Queen Amphitrite especially for Beckham.[10][11] The former Spice Girl accepted the role because her sons, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz, love the show,[12][13][14] were excited when their mother told them of the role, and looked forward to watching the episode with her.[15][16]
Beckham recorded the voice-over in late-2008[10] in a day,[11][17] and claimed that she was "thrilled" to provide the vocal cameo.[18][19][20] Other guests including Seinfeld actor John O'Hurley also made a vocal cameo in the episode as King Neptune, and Skid Row heavy metal vocalist Sebastian Bach as the voice of Triton.[21][22][23]
Ideas for casting guest voices often come from the writers and executive producer, said Sarah Noonan, vice president of talent and casting for Nickelodeon.[24] Steven Banks told "But the harder part was for Sebastian. I was so pleased that he really could sound like a pimple-faced, snotty teenager."[4] Nickelodeon animation president Brown Johnson said "We're happy to have such a talented and eclectic group of celebrities lend their voices to this SpongeBob special[...] Victoria [Beckham], John [O'Hurley] and Sebastian [Bach] truly brought Bikini Bottom's royal family to life."[25][26]
On July 13, 2010, the episode became available on DVD titled Triton's Revenge as Paramount Home Entertainment and Nickelodeon announced its release.[27] The DVD features six other episodes including "Sand Castles in the Sand", "Shell Shocked", "Chum Bucket Supreme", "Single Cell Anniversary", "Tentacle-Vision", and "I Heart Dancing", and special features such as shorts of the episode and Fanboy and Chum Chum episodes.[28] It was also included series' season six DVD compilation.[29]
Reception[edit]
The premiere of "The Clash of Triton" drew 2.8 million kids 2-11, 2.0 million kids 6-11, 1.5 million teens 9-14 and 5.2 million total viewers age 2+ for Nickelodeon.[30] SpongeBob.com had its most trafficked week in 2010 with 1.4 million unique visitors, 15.1 million page views, and 5.7 million total game sessions. Additionally, the new Nick Game of the Week based on the special generated 1.2 million game sessions.[31][32]
"The Clash of Triton" received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Steve Earhart called the episode "a hilarious special that runs perfect with the six other quirky and crazy-funny episode."[33] Shannon Gosney of The Mommy-Files said that "you'll love this special[...]"[34] Nancy Basile of the About.com said "it was funny enough and endearing enough to make it well worth watching."[35] Gord Lacey of TV Shows on DVD claimed "I enjoyed 'Clash of the Triton', and the bonus episode of Fanboy and Chum Chum was neat."[36] Ken Tucker of the Entertainment Weekly said "The values of SpongeBob remain intact. The script’s rapid-fire gags, the show's wildly bright color palette, and the series' resolute avoidance of heavy-handed messages combine to give Stephen Hillenburg's SpongeBob its adventurous energy." He added "[SpongeBob] SquarePants just doesn't seem to get old, does it?"[6]
Maxie Zeus of Toon Zone said "the plot isn't even well structured, being slack and inefficient about getting from one situation to the next." He added "the whole special is like this: plot points clumsily rolled out to 'motivate' other plot points, which are themselves there only to motivate yet more plot points. But somehow, while they were distracted by all this wheezing machinery, they forgot to put any actual humor in."[37] Paul Mavis of DVD Talk said "'The Clash of Triton' spends way too much time on exposition, setting up the short's premise, while skimping on what should have been a priority: the jokes."[29] In his review for the DVD Verdict, Roy Hrab gave the episode's DVD a negative review and said "loud noises and frantic action fill the screen to little or no purpose. It's all punch lines and no jokes or clever set-ups."[38]

Plot summary[edit]
Early one day, SpongeBob and Patrick become the first visitors to a new section of Jellyfish Fields. As they wander in the area, they discover a sign that states that a "super highway" will be built through Jellyfish Fields. Believing that the highway will pollute and ultimately destroy Jellyfish Fields, SpongeBob resolves to prevent the highway's creation.[2]
SpongeBob asks Mr. Krabs for assistance, but he supports the highway, as it can bring more customers to the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob then shows Mr. Krabs the highway's blueprint, which shows that the highway will run over the Krusty Krab and end directly at the Chum Bucket, revealing that Plankton is responsible for the highway's development. Mr. Krabs thus decides to support SpongeBob. They both go to the Chum Bucket and ask Plankton to not develop the highway, but he states that, already, the whole rest of the town has unanimously voted to build the highway.[2]
Refusing to give up, SpongeBob and Patrick peacefully petition to stop the highway. Nobody listens to them, however, and they are quickly exiled for their actions. Shortly after arriving there, they see a parade meant to commemorate the groundbreaking of the highway. It is rapidly built and, as SpongeBob predicted, it turns Jellyfish Fields into a wasteland.[2]
A few days later, the Krusty Krab's business quickly dwindles due to the highway. Believing that no one will come to the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs decides to finally give Plankton the Krabby Patty formula. Mere seconds before he does, however, the jellyfish from Jellyfish Fields invade Bikini Bottom and start attacking civilians. Seeing this as an opportunity to destroy the highway, SpongeBob makes an appeal to the people, who agree to destroy it. Everybody in Bikini Bottom turns against Plankton and destroys the highway (Plankton, who thinks his highway is unremovable, tries to save it but gets ran over). Jellyfish Fields is restored instantly to its natural state.[2]
Production[edit]
"SpongeBob's Last Stand" was written by Aaron Springer, Steven Banks, and Derek Iversen. Springer also served as storyboard director.[3] Directed by Andrew Overtoom and Tom Yasumi, the episode was part of Nickelodeon's 2010 Earth Day celebration.[4][5][6] The episode originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on April 22, 2010,[1][7] following a two-hour marathon of nature-themed SpongeBob episodes.[5][8] A tie-in video game to the episode was released online prior to its television airing.[9][10] According to Nickelodeon, "[kids will] learn about the environment through different levels at different Bikini Bottom locales."[9]
Nickelodeon officially announced the episode on a press release on April 5, 2010. According to the network, "SpongeBob and Patrick learn the 'Shelly Super Highway' is coming to Bikini Bottom - right through Jellyfish Fields! They must find a way to galvanize their neighbors, or it could be the end for Jellyfish Fields forever."[11] It was promoted as SpongeBob's campaign to save the jellyfish.[5][6][12] Writer Banks told that the episode never set out to teach environmental lessons. He said "When you entertain someone and make it funny, sometimes you can get a message across [...] Not that we're out here to send messages everywhere."[8] The episode featured two musical numbers, including "Give Jellyfish Fields a Chance", a salute to the 1960s protest songs.[8][13] Banks, on the song, said that "[It is a] sort of Bob Dylan meets John Lennon."[8]
On March 16, 2010, prior to the episode's television airing, the episode was released on the DVD compilation of the same name in the United States and Canada,[14][15][16] on July 18, 2011 in region 2,[17] and on June 6, 2011 in region 4.[18] The DVD features six other episodes including "Pet or Pests", "Komputer Overload", "Gullible Pants", "Overbooked", "No Hat for Pat", and "Toy Store of Doom".[19][20][21] It was also released on the series' season seven DVD compilation, alongside 25 other episodes.[22]
Reception[edit]
According to the Nielsen Media Research, Nickelodeon averaged 2.1 million total viewers. SpongeBob SquarePants was ranked as the number-one program on broadcast and basic cable in April and scored the number-one telecast, "SpongeBob's Last Stand", with kids 2-11 for the month.[23]
The episode received positive reviews from critics. Paul Mavis of DVD Talk said "[the episode have] a nicely worked-out story and strong, integrated gags. He added "it's a particularly well-crafted entry."[24] C. S. Strowbridge of The Numbers said "There are a number of funny gags on this double-length short, but it feels padded. It's also heavy-handed. I do like that they have a message to go with the jokes, but it would have been more effective if it were more subtle."[25] Josh Rode of DVD Verdict described the episode as "decent".[26] Shannon Gosney of The Mommy-Files said "there were many parts where my boys just burst out laughing. Even I found myself laughing at times."[21]

Plot summary[edit]
One day at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob goes into the freezer to get more Krabby Patties, only to discover that are none left. He and Mr. Krabs try to make more, but cannot remember the recipe. Mr. Krabs then goes to his vault to get the Krabby Patty formula but upon opening it, Plankton comes out riding a small missile with the formula in his hand but is quickly captured by Krabs. To keep the recipe safe, Mr. Krabs has it shipped to a bank in the city of Far-Out-Ville, but neglects to read it before sending it away. He then gives SpongeBob the key to his bank account where the recipe is stored, and he and Patrick board a train called the Oceanic Express to the Far-Out-Ville bank for the safe deposit box, but Plankton sneaks aboard as well. Eventually, the key to the box is stolen and SpongeBob and Patrick must find the culprit. Just then, Plankton walks up and Patrick searches him, but finds him clean. The duo stops the train to find the suspect responsible for stealing the key. A nanny and her baby are searched, only to find a stolen jewel that was stolen by triplets. The next suspect, the train's conductor (who is repeatedly referred to as a butler), is revealed to be a thief named Orin J. Ruffy who stole $75,000 worth of ham sandwiches.[1]
SpongeBob cries hopelessly but soon finds Patrick having the key; in fact, he finds it while he cleans SpongeBob's pants. They go back into the train and are on their way to the bank. Eventually, Plankton bats them out of a window with a wooden board and they must chase the train. It is revealed that Plankton has the key. SpongeBob morphs himself into a hang glider and he and Patrick fly back onto the train to pursue him. Once they return, Plankton hides and drops luggages on top of them. Spongebob and Patrick chase him into the cab of the locomotive. But Plankton uncouples it from the rest of the train, leaving SpongeBob and Patrick in it. They try to stop the engine but Patrick idiotically breaks the brake of the locomotive and Spongebob pulls some levels while Patrick shovels coal into its firebox to try and get it to stop, but this causes it to go out of control. Patrick makes several futile attempts to stop the train, including putting a heavy boulder on the tracks. This only causes the train to flip and move forward while some of the wheels are off the track. The two manage to bring all wheels back in place when they stop in front of a retirement home before using it to get back to the Far-Out-Ville bank. Then, Patrick stupidly breaks the throttle which once again makes it go out of control. Meanwhile, Plankton is seen trying to steal the formula by from the Far-Out-Ville bank by Mr. Krabs and tries to lock him in a vault. Plankton escapes with it, but SpongeBob and Patrick come crashing through the wall in the locomotive and stop Plankton before he could leave. Plankton's plan fails (again), but Mr. Krabs has to pay for the damage to the bank with his bank account, much to his dismay. 75 years later, SpongeBob, shown as an elderly man, finishes the story of the "Great Train Caper" that he has been telling his grandson. The grandson, who was not even paying attention to the story, responds with an excited cheer over his video game and Spongebob instantly falls asleep.[1]
Production[edit]
"The Great Patty Caper" was written by Casey Alexander, Zeus Cervas, Steven Banks and Dani Michaeli, with Alan Smart and Tom Yasumi serving as directors. Alexander and Cervas also functioned as storyboard directors.[2] The episode originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on November 11, 2010, with a TV-Y7 parental rating.[3]
The episode was branded by Nickelodeon as a television special called "Mystery with a Twistery" in which:
"Mr. Krabs sends the Krabby Patty recipe to a far away vault for safe keeping so that Plankton can’t get to it. But when Mr. Krabs forgets the recipe himself he gives SpongeBob the key to the vault and sends him on a journey across the ocean to retrieve it. Things go bad when the key goes missing aboard the Oceanic Express train and SpongeBob must identify the culprit and get the key back before the Krabby Patty recipe is missing forever!"[4][5][6]
"The Great Patty Caper" was released on a DVD compilation of the same name on March 8, 2011 by Paramount Home Entertainment.[7][8][9][10][11] The DVD includes the episode itself, "Growth Spout", "Stuck in the Wringer", "Someone's in the Kitchen With Sandy", "The Inside Job", "Greasy Buffoons", and the "Model Sponge".[12][13][14] On December 6, 2011, "The Great Patty Caper" was released on the SpongeBob SquarePants: The Complete 7th Season DVD, alongside all episodes of the seventh season.[1][15][16] It also became available on the SpongeBob SquarePants: The First 100 Episodes DVD on September 22, 2009, together with all the episodes of seasons one through five.[17][18]
Reception[edit]
Upon release, "The Great Patty Caper" ranked as basic cable's top entertainment telecast for its release week with total viewers, drawing 6.1 million viewers.[19][20][21][22] The episode also ranked as the week's number-one telecast with kids 2-11 on broadcast and basic cable.[19][20] The premiere ranked as the top program for Thursday, November 11, night with all children and tween demographics, posting double- and triple-digit gains for Nickelodeon. The special also averaged 1.4/1.6 million in the adults demographics ranging from 18-49, drawing more adult viewers than TBS' Conan for the night.[19][20] The episode had a total of 6.6 million viewers (+122%), making it as the year's top animated telecast with kids 2-11.[23][24][25]
The episode received mostly positive reviews. Nancy Basile of About.com gave the episode a 3.5 out of 5 rating, saying "'The Great Patty Caper' would have been better at regular episode length rather than stretching it to a special. With some of the slower, duller parts edited out, the whole episode would come off as clever, slick and fast-paced funny."[26] Sandy Angulo Chen of Common Sense Media gave the episode 3/5 stars and wrote "There's still no hidden educational purpose to the series, but it does expose kids to plot structure, character development, predictability, and the various ways that humor is used in a story."[27]
Paul Mavis of DVD Talk positively reacted to the episode and said the episode "is certainly one of the more energetic entries I've seen from the series in some time."[13] Mavis added "'The Great Patty Caper' picks up a good head of steam to a satisfying conclusion (SpongeBob as an old geezer is also foolproof),"[13] but was disappointed "that someone didn't exploit the obvious Agatha Christie Murder on the Orient Express-flavored train sequence by having SpongeBob adorned as Poirot or even Miss Marple as he went about his inept sleuthing (SpongeBob in drag is always a solid winner)."[13]
Marty Shaw of BSC Kids, on the ratings, said "SpongeBob SquarePants has been on the air since 1999 and the November 11th episode was the eight show of the eight season. What exactly does that mean? With 6.102 million viewers watching, it means that the adventures of SpongeBob SquarePants never get old."[21] Billy Gil of the Home Media Magazine said "'The Great Patty Caper' is one of the better SpongeBob episodes in recent memory[...]"[28] Roy Hrab of DVD Verdict was not positive towards the DVD and said "Wow, this is probably the most boring set of SpongeBob episodes I've ever seen."[29]

Plot summary[edit]
It is Christmas in Bikini Bottom and Plankton is angry for committing naughty acts that he is on the naughty list of Santa Claus and would not receive his Christmas wish, the Krabby Patty secret formula. However, he discovers jerktonium, an element that can turn anyone nice into a jerk. Using his discovery, he cooks it into fruitcakes he intends to spread around Bikini Bottom. To test it, Plankton gives the fruit cake to SpongeBob, but he is immune to jerktonium because of a combination of his tiny brain and his big heart. Upset that his plan seemingly failed, Plankton gives his fruitcake dispenser to SpongeBob, who promptly distributes the fruitcakes to all of Bikini Bottom and turns all the residents into jerks. Plankton realizes that SpongeBob is so full of Christmas spirit that he is immune to jerktonium; Plankton then sends out an evil wind-up robot SpongeBob to commit naughty deeds to frame the real SpongeBob.
The next day, SpongeBob begins to notice that everyone is acting like jerks. SpongeBob and Sandy discover the antidote for jerktonium and it happens to be a song. SpongeBob begins singing, bringing back the residents' Christmas spirit. Unfortunately, it is too late when Santa Claus arrives and states that everyone is on his naughty list, except Plankton, who is the only nice person there is. Santa then grants Plankton his wish and tells SpongeBob that he is the worst of them all for wreaking havoc in Bikini Bottom. The robot comes to eliminate Santa and destroy more of Christmas. SpongeBob fights and destroys the robot with the fruitcake dispenser. Santa thanks SpongeBob for saving him and realizes that Plankton was behind the chaos. Santa then leaves Bikini Bottom.
Patchy the Pirate Sub-Plot[edit]
The Special also features a Stop-Motion Sub-Plot, Featuring the Live-Action Character, Patchy the Pirate. Patchy (Parodying the role of S.D. Kluger from Santa Claus is Comin' to Town) drives a mail truck through a snowy mountain range, In which it's revealed that he stole the truck and is bringing Santa his Letter. Patchy's Truck then suddenly runs over a fork in the road, causing the Truck to spin Madly.
Later on, Patchy and Potty have Manage to survive, and get lost in the woods, as they build a fire.
In the Epilogue of the episode, Patchy and Potty make it to the North Pole, believing they finally made it to Santa's workshop. However, it turns out he was, once again, hallucinating and really encountered a hungry polar bear, which started chasing him (and presumably eats Patchy). Potty steal Manages to find Santa's real Workshop, and Patchy is put on the naughty list for stealing the mail truck in the first place.
All of the Patchy the Pirate segments were cut in the CBS airing. The Sub-plot would also be reused for the Direct-to-DVD Max sequel, Max 3: It's a Max and Lora Christmas.
Development[edit]
Writing and music[edit]
Ideas for the episode came from Tom Kenny.
Luke Brookshier, Marc Ceccarelli, Derek Iversen, and Mr. Lawrence served as the episode's writers. "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" was inspired by the classic Rankin/Bass television specials, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town.[1] The original concept for the episode came from an idea by Tom Kenny,[2] who originally wrote a song in 2009.[2] Eventually, the Nickelodeon executives found it on their desk and decided to make it into a holiday special.[2]
Nickelodeon wrote three more songs for the special, and decided to make a soundtrack album.[2] On November 6, 2012, Nickelodeon officially released the soundtrack album to the episode.[3] Sony Music Entertainment also released the soundtrack for digital download from online music stores including Amazon and iTunes.[4][5]
Production[edit]
"It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" was the first full-length episode in the series that was produced in stop motion animation. Mark Caballero, Seamus Walsh, and Christopher Finnegan of Screen Novelties animated it, and Caballero and Walsh also served as its directors. In 2009, they also animated the series' 10th anniversary special opening titles.[1]
"We had to make sure SpongeBob felt like SpongeBob[...] It actually took us a few months of going back and forth to make sure it didn't feel too plastic-y and ultrarealistic. We ended up using a type of cushion foam that was pretty malleable and gave off a bit of a translucent yellow glow off him. It had feel cuddly and happy-go-lucky as well as having that extra crazy element. It's not easy to translate a 2D character into a puppet: It can get ugly if you’re not careful."
—Director Mark Caballero, on making SpongeBob.[6]
Production on the episode began in October 2011 at Los Angeles, California.[6] According to Chris Finnegan, it took about five months to shoot, with a couple of months on either end for research and development and post.[7] Six sets were constructed on which sixty pounds of baking soda were used as snow, 42 pounds of glitter for the background, 22 pounds of woodchips were used to create Sandy's treedome floor and 20 boxes of cereal covered the coral rocks.[6] Caballero and Walsh had conflicts on making sure the stop motion version of Bikini Bottom will resemble the 2D world of the series. There was also the issue of making SpongeBob resemble his 2D self.[6]
Series' creator Stephen Hillenburg and executive producer Paul Tibbitt provided hands-on feedback on the production on a weekly basis. "They'd check out the weeklies and go back and forth with us on the various gags[...] It was really a pleasurable experience when they came to visit, because we come from the same planet. It all felt very easy and natural," Walsh said.[6]
A sneak-peek trailer was released in June 2012 for its preview.[8][9]
Voice casting[edit]
All the main SpongeBob cast members lent their voices to the episode. Series executive producer Paul Tibbitt also had a minor speaking role as the voice of Potty the Parrot. In addition to the regular cast, American actor John Goodman guest starred in the episode as the voice of Santa Claus.[10]
Release[edit]
The episode originally aired on CBS on November 23, 2012,[11][12] and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on December 2, 2012.[13] It aired December 6, 2012 on Nickelodeon in the United States,[14] exactly twelve years after the original airing of the first SpongeBobChristmas special, "Christmas Who?", on December 21, 2012 in Southeast Asia, and on December 22, 2012 in Canada.[11] The premiere of the episode on Nickelodeon was advertised as the world premiere, despite the previous airings.[11] It was rated TV-PG on CBS and TV-Y7 on Nickelodeon.
Home media[edit]
"It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" was released on a DVD compilation of the same name on October 30, 2012 in Canada and on November 6, 2012 in the United States.[15] The DVD features exclusive content including behind-the-scenes making of the special and interviews with the cast and crew; a pre-color animatic and yule log.[4] The initial announcement of the DVD release stated that it would contain three Christmas specials from T.U.F.F. Puppy, Fanboy and Chum Chum, and The Fairly OddParents as bonus features; however, these were dropped from the actual release.[16]
A Blu-ray release was first announced, but was cancelled a week afterwards for unknown reasons;[17] however, on July 22, 2013, Paramount Home Media Distribution announced that the Blu-ray will be released on October 15, 2013.[18]
The episode was also released for digital download on October 31, 2012 featuring over 30 minutes of exclusive behind the scenes footage, a sing along version of "Don’t Be a Jerk (It's Christmas)," and more.[4][14]
Reception[edit]
Ratings[edit]
In its original airing on CBS on November 23, the episode was viewed by an estimated 3.626 million households and received a 0.9 Nielsen rating and a 3% share among adults between the ages of 18 and 49.[19] On December 8, Saturday, the airing of the episode on Nickelodeon drew 4.8 million viewers making the special win its time period across all television and posted strong, double-digit gains over last year with Kids 2-11 (7.8/2.6 million, +30%), Kids 6-11 (7.7/1.5 million, +45%), Teens 9-14 (5.7/1.2 million, +84%) and Adults 18-49 (1.2/1.3 million, +33%).[20][21] Nickelodeon closed the week as the most-watched net in total day with kids 2-11 (2.8/936,000) and total viewers (1.8 million).[22] In the United Kingdom 273,000 viewers watched the episode and 78,000 viewers watched the timeshift broadcast.[23] The broadcast in Canada received 835,000 viewers, the 23rd highest of the week on all Canadian television.[24] In Spain the premiere on December 20, 2012 received 618,000 viewers making it the 44th highest broadcast for that day.[25]
Critical reception[edit]
"I don't know if 'SpongeBob SquarePants: It's a SpongeBob Christmas!' will become the TV classic watched year after year that the production teams hopes it will be... but it's good enough for right now. Plenty of funny gags and beautiful stop-motion animation add up to a Christmas winner here. I'm highly recommending 'SpongeBob SquarePants: It's a SpongeBob Christmas!.'"
—Paul Mavis, DVD Talk[26]
The special received mostly positive reviews. In his review for the Los Angeles Times, Robert Lloyd wrote, "I felt I'd been somewhere, watching this. When it ended, I was not ready to leave."[27] David Hinckley of the New York Daily News wrote, "It’s enough to make you want to dream of a yellow Christmas."[28] Zack Handlen of The A.V. Club called the episode "cute, and goofy and doesn’t have a mean bone in its body."[29] Judge Dawn Hunt of DVD Verdict called the episode "a sweet holiday treat, punctuated by musical numbers that'll leave you smiling." He added "If you're looking for a new holiday viewing, 'It's a SpongeBob Christmas!' is definitely worthy of consideration."[30] Paul Mavis of DVD Talk applauded the episode but has doubts if it will become the classic that will be watched every season.[26]
In her review for the About.com, Nancy Basile's review was mixed to positive and gave the episode a score of 4/5. She wrote "though I disagree with a few of the animator's choices, this Christmas special is a treat." Basile criticized its characters especially the use of foam to create the characters and the way Santa Claus was depicted saying "he looks like a pig with liver spots."[31]
Jessica Dawson of Common Sense Media gave the soundtrack album 3/5 stars and wrote "the fun and fresh Christmas songs actually capture the excitement and anticipation in a way that's a nice change from the traditional yuletide tunes we're all used to."[32]

Plot summary[edit]
SpongeBob and Patrick are at the Sand Mountain where they see the Drasticals, doing extreme sports. A British fancy fish tells them about the Drasticals, and because he spoke in lisp, they have mistaken for "extreme spots". Covered with jellyfish sting "spots", SpongeBob and Patrick stand in front of the team, wanting the Drasticals to join them because of their "extreme spots". Johnny Krill, the leader of the Drasticals, corrects them for "sports" and lets them try to be Drasticals. Johnny gives SpongeBob and Patrick tasks to do to pass, including motorbiking and surfing, but they ended up to be terrible at it. Johnny decides that his team's activities are too "extreme" for SpongeBob and Patrick. Eventually, SpongeBob tells Johnny various activities they can do that are "extreme".
SpongeBob and Patrick do ordinary activities, including beating up a pillow in a boxing match and after Johnny beats it up, a bed mattress come to life and (after seeing its friend beaten up) attacks Johnny, then the Drasticals make it "extreme" because Johnny was unimpressed. Johnny asks if SpongeBob and Patrick can do other activities and SpongeBob says there is one sport—jellyfishing. And while they are doing it, the Drasticals catch jellyfish extremely. Later, the team got injured and are covered in jellyfish stings saying that the "spots" are way "extreme".
Production[edit]
Actor Johnny Knoxville, shown here in 2011, guest starred in the episode as the voice of Johnny Krill.
"Extreme Spots" was written by Luke Brookshier, Marc Ceccarelli, and Derek Iversen, and was directed by Tom Yasumi. Brookshier and Ceccarelli also functioned as storyboard directors. The episode was the first regular-length episode to be produced in high-definition.[1] It originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on July 21, 2013,[2] with a TV-Y7 parental rating.[3] It was a part of the network's "The Super Spongy Square Games" marathon which debuted sports-themed episodes of the series.[4][5][6][7]
In addition to the regular cast, American stunt performer and Jackass actor Johnny Knoxville guest starred in the episode as the voice of Johnny Krill, the leader of an extreme sports team called the Drasticals and a champion of undersea extreme sports.[8][9] The writing staff wrote the episode specifically for Knoxville.[10] Executive producer Paul Tibbitt said "[Nickelodeon] wanted to do a show about extreme sports and the first thing that came to mind was Johnny Knoxville, because there are few humans living that are as extreme as him." Knoxville accepted the role because he is a fan of the show.[11][12] Knoxville said "I got a lot of street cred[ability] in the office for doing SpongeBob. Everyone is psyched[...] As soon as I was done recording this episode, I started begging them to let me come back and record another one."[10] Knoxville asked if he needed to come up with a funny voice for his character. However, the producers said "No, we want [your voice]."[11] Knoxville claimed that "it's not easy" providing a vocal cameo. He added "It's a different kind of work."[11]
Aside from providing vocal cameo, Knoxville also did a photo shoot with a SpongeBob plush toy for the episode.[13] Knoxville said "They loaded me up with a bunch of schwag! Every toy they ever made—skateboards, wristbands, all kinds of great stuff. They just don't quit with the perks." He added "They [the crews] let me do my own stunts for this episode. It was amazing."[14]
On January 15, 2013, "Extreme Spots" became available on the DVD compilation SpongeBob SquarePants: Extreme Kah-Rah-Tay along with fellow eighth and ninth season episodes "Squid Defense", "The Way of the Sponge", "House Sittin' For Sandy", "The Krabby Patty That Ate Bikini Bottom", "Squirrel Record", "Face Freeze", and "Demolition Doofus".[15][1][16]
Reception[edit]
The premiere of "Extreme Spots" on July 21, 2012 as part of "The Super Spongy Square Games" marathon scored 3.7 million total viewers, ranking as the most watched kids program among total viewers for the entire week.[17] The episode, alongside "Squirrel Record", "Demolition Doofus", and "Face Freeze!", posted a double-digit increase with kid demographic, averaging 5.57 million Kids 2-11 (+50%) from 2011.[17]
"Extreme Spots" received positive reviews from critics. Paul Mavis of DVD Talk enjoyed the episode and said "'Extreme Spots' gets big laughs from some very funny bits." He added that the "stereotypical Britisher fish, complete with monocle and bad teeth, is a scream."[1] In his review for the Inside Pulse, Joe Corey said that the episode is "equally dangerous" with the remaining episodes of the Extreme Kah-Rah-Tay DVD.[18]

Plot summary[edit]
SpongeBob is going about his usual day at work at the Krusty Krab. All of a sudden, his employer Mr. Krabs shows up and tells him that he is terminated from his fry cooking job. According to Mr. Krabs, he can save a nickel if he cut SpongeBob's salary. SpongeBob is determined to work for free, but Mr. Krabs concedes such labor would be illegal, and he would lose his license. SpongeBob cries and is very depressed all the way home. Meanwhile, Mr. Krabs takes SpongeBob's previous position and will be running the kitchen.
At home, SpongeBob is still crying and tells Patrick his situation. Patrick, however, tells him that "being unemployed is the best gig I know." He says that he will come back tomorrow to introduce him to "the unemployed lifestyle". The next morning, the two friends meet and start SpongeBob's first day of "glorious unemployment". Patrick demonstrates his activities to his best friend. But, SpongeBob has an epiphany and admits to Patrick that he really needs to get a job.
Afterwards, SpongeBob attempts to get a job at a hot dog joint; however, gets fired for ruining the food by turning it to "Weenie Patties". He applies at one restaurant to another but always get rejected for altering the food. SpongeBob goes home and prepares his pet Gary a homemade pet food because they are already out. Eventually, the door rings and SpongeBob answers only to be stashed in a body bag and taken back to the hot dog restaurant, where he is forced to work, because of pure irony, as the customers now like his nostalgic creations. All the previous restaurants he applied at are now fighting over him.
Then a mysterious person in a costume shaped like a Krabby Patty saves SpongeBob and takes him to the Krusty Krab. It is revealed that the person wearing the suit is Squidward, who admits that the Krusty Krab is getting worse without SpongeBob. SpongeBob's former co-worker and employer asks him if he wants to be rehired, which SpongeBob gladly accepts. He cleans up the Krusty Krab, and puts the restaurant back on track.
Production[edit]
"SpongeBob, You're Fired!" is a television special[6] directed by Alan Smart and Tom Yasumi, and written by Marc Ceccarelli, Luke Brookshier, and Mr. Lawrence. Ceccarelli and Brookshier also served as storyboard directors. The episode first aired on Nickelodeon (Greece) on July 3, 2013.[5] In an October 30, 2013 article of the New York Post, it first reported that the episode would air on Nickelodeon in the United States several weeks later, on November 11, 2013.[7][7][8] In the article, Russell Hicks, president of content, development and production for Nickelodeon, said "Like all really great cartoons, part of SpongeBob's long-running success has been its ability to tap into the zeitgeist while still being really funny for our audience."[7] He further stated that "As always, despite this momentary setback, SpongeBob's eternal optimism prevails, which is always a great message for everyone."[7]
On July 21, 2013, Tom Kenny presented an event called "SpongeCon 2013: The Year of the Fan" at the San Diego Comic-Con International 2013.[9][10][11] The event hosted the official and exclusive sneak preview of "SpongeBob, You're Fired!" and the screening of the SpongeBob SquareShorts global short film competition finalists.[12][13][14][15][16][17] Prior to the official preview, a sneak peek of the episode was featured on Nick Studio 10, hosted by Noah Grossman and Gabrielle "Gabby" Senn, on June 10, 2013.[18] A "SpongeBob expert" named Sophia said that "the unthinkable [will] happen to SpongeBob [in this episode]."[19] She remarked that the episode is "pretty top secret."[20]
As part of the marketing campaign for the episode, Nickelodeon debuted an online game of the same name.[21][22] Beginning November 6, players could visit "nick.com/spongebob" to play the game.[21][22] In the gameplay, players must accurately cook the orders of the diners while juggling each server's impatience level in order to keep them "happy as possible."[21][22] Furthermore, Nickelodeon published a collection called SpongeBob SquarePants: Get To Work! on iTunes.[21][22] On November 6, Nickelodeon debuted the full-length trailer of the episode to garner more exposure.[23] Earlier that day, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively debuted the 45-second teaser.[23] The source also released in advance an exclusive 90-second trailer of the episode, featuring SpongeBob getting the ax from Mr. Krabs, a decision he made for cost-cutting purposes, on November 4.[23][24]
Nickelodeon and Paramount Home Entertainment will release "SpongeBob, You're Fired!" on a DVD compilation of the same name on April 29, 2014.[25]
Reception[edit]
Ratings[edit]
The original airing of the episode "SpongeBob, You're Fired!" on November 11 on Nickelodeon brought in the biggest audience viewership for a SpongeBob SquarePants episode in two years, with 5.186 million households tuning in overall.[26][27][28] The episode tied with CBS' Hostages, the "poorest performer", from the "Big Four" of the night.[27] However, across cable, the show outperformed The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (0.8 adults), Teen Mom (0.7 adults) and The Daily Show (0.6 adults).[27] The broadcast was enough for a second-place finish in total viewers among all the day's cable programs to the Monday Night Football contest between the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ESPN.[27][28] "SpongeBob, You're Fired!" topped the 2–11, 6–11 and 9–14 in the kids demographics.[26][27]
Criticism and controversy[edit]
The episode subtly introduces a couple of hot-button issues, including the worth of social services, labor laws that caused SpongeBob's boss, Mr. Krabs, to fire his best employee, and more [...]

The episode's plot development was criticized for its line that is referring to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps benefit). In a scene from the episode, Patrick Star tried to show SpongeBob "the benefits of being unemployed," at which he said in response, "Unemployment may be fun for you, but I need to get a job." The scene was meant to demonstrate the title character's "eternal optimism and willingness to get back to work," and "do it in a way that's still funny and relatable."[29] However, it was reported that political activists claim the "notorious line" as a "slam" to the Food Stamps benefit.[30][29][31] In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, it stated there that the episode may have a political agenda about the social safety net. It added that "It's not the first time SpongeBob has waded into social commentary, though usually when it does, it bugs the right and supports the left." The Hollywood Reported cited the previous episodes "SpongeBob's Last Stand" and "Selling Out" for where "environmentalism is glorified" and "large businesses are demonized."[24]
According to various sources, the story line is said to be "symbolic of a harsh economic climate."[32][33][34] The plot eventually sparked a political debate for its depiction of unemployment.[30][35] Prior to the premiere, the New York Post published an article on the episode. However, the article was criticized as the author, Andrea Morabito, attacked the "poor people" who rely on government assistance, referring to individuals who rely on food stamps as "mooching off the social services" and applauding SpongeBob for instead quickly returning to "gainful employment."[1][2] The "attack" was parroted by Fox News, with Heather Nauert of Fox & Friends, claiming that "the harsh economic climate has hit the underwater community,"[2] but "instead of mooching off social services at Bikini Bottom, that's the town, SpongeBob sets out to return to the work force."[36]
After the New York Post and Fox News remarked on the episode, the Media Matters for America, a politically progressive media watchdog group, responded.[2][24] According to the group, the attacking news media, both owned by News Corporation, are using the episode "to slam poor people who use social services."[1][2] In response to Fox News, Media Matters immediately posted an item online titled "Right-Wing Media Use SpongeBob SquarePants' Firing To Attack Social Safety Net", arguing that the two "are using the firing of fictional cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants to attack the social safety net and those who rely on it."[2][24][37] Media Matters was "also particularly bothered by [a] line from The Post story: "Lest he sit around idly, mooching off the social services of Bikini Bottom, a depressed SpongeBob sets out to return to gainful employment wherever he can find it," reporter Andrea Morabito wrote. "No spoilers—but it's safe to say that our hero doesn't end up on food stamps, as his patty-making skills turn out to be in high demand."[2][24][24]
Furthermore, the coverage from Fox News prompted civil rights activist, and talk show host Al Sharpton of MSNBC to "stick up for poor Americans." Sharpton remarked in the October 31 episode of PoliticsNation, "The right-wingers found a new hero in its war against the poor [...] SpongeBob SquarePants. That's right. SpongeBob SquarePants [...] So a sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea doesn't need government help. That means no one does?"[3][4][5]
Nickelodeon declined to comment on the issue caused by the message of the episode.[5] However, Russell Hicks of Nickelodeon said the show is "tapping into the news of the moment, but did not specifically address any political leanings or ideologies within the episode." In a statement, Hicks said "Like all really great cartoons, part of SpongeBob's long-running success has been its ability to tap into the zeitgeist while still being really funny for our audience. As always, despite this momentary setback, SpongeBob's eternal optimism prevails, which is always a great message for everyone."[31]
