The Artist is a 2011 French[1] romantic comedy-drama film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo.[2] The film is set in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a declining film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema falls out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. The film premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where Dujardin won the Best Actor Award.[3] It was released in France on 12 October 2011.[4] Following a showing at the 49th New York Film Festival, The Artist was released on 23 November 2011 in the United States.[5] As of June 2012, the film had earned a worldwide box office total of over $133 million.[6] The Artist was well received by movie critics, with an approval rating of 98% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, which consists of popular and notable critics reviews from newspapers, websites, television and radio programs.[7]
The Artist became the most honored French film in history following its release, with the accolades honoring the film itself, the cast's acting performance, the screenplay, the direction, the score, the cinematography, the editing, and the costumes.[8] The film garnered ten Academy Award nominations at the 2012 ceremony; the ceremony saw the film come away with five awards, including Best Picture, Director, Lead Actor, Original Score, and Costume Design. It was the first silent feature to win the Academy Award for Best Picture after Wings at the inaugural ceremony in 1929 and the first black and white film to win that award since 1993's Schindler's List.[9] Moreover, Jean Dujardin became the first French actor to win an Oscar.[10] A day before the Oscar ceremony, the film was named Best Feature at the 27th Independent Spirit Awards, the first Best Picture Oscar winner to also win that award since 1986's Platoon.[11] The film also received twelve nominations at the 65th British Academy Film Awards, winning seven awards including Best Film, Director, and Actor. At the 37th César Awards ceremony, the film earned six César Awards including Best Actress for Bérénice Bejo and Best Film.
The Artist gathered three accolades from six nominations during the 69th Golden Globe Awards, where it became the first French film to win a Best Film Golden Globe. In addition, Dujardin was the first French actor to win the Best Actor Golden Globe since Gérard Depardieu, who won for his performance in Cyrano de Bergerac.[12] At the 18th Screen Actors Guild Awards, Jean Dujardin won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor. The film won the Best Theatrical Motion Picture and Outstanding Directorial Achievement at the 23rd Producers Guild of America Awards and the 64th Directors Guild of America Awards respectively. The 17th Critics' Choice Awards, 77th NY Film Critics Circle Awards, and the 33rd London Film Critics' Circle Awards saw the film win awards for Best Picture.[13][14] The film was given a special award by the American Film Institute.[15] Film critic Richard Corliss of Time magazine placed the film at number one of his Top Ten Films of the Year list.[16]

Background and career[edit]
Shaffer attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop for a summer semester and studied comedy writing at Chicago's The Second City. He reviews books for RT Book Reviews, a magazine devoted largely to romance and erotic literature. He is also a columnist for the Huffington Post where he covers news within the publishing industry and reviews new book releases.[1]
Order of St. Nick[edit]
Order of St. Nick is a greeting card company whose irreverent cards have been featured on The Colbert Report, NPR, and FOX News. Shaffer started the company after a fruitless quest to find seasonal cards that expressed secular beliefs to send to atheists during the holidays. It was featured on the Colbert Report as ‘Un-American.’ And CBS's The Early Show featured Order of St. Nick’s Depressing Times cards as one of the most prominent examples of the ‘Great Depression chic’ trend in 2009.
Fifty Shames of Earl Grey[edit]
Shaffer wrote Fifty Shames of Earl Grey under the pen name “Fanny Merkin.” Fifty Shames of Earl Grey is a parody of E. L. James’ popular trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey. Publishers Weekly suggested "The parody brings to life all of the arguments for and against 50 Shades, including the feminist concerns, portrayal of BDSM, roots in Twilight fan-fiction, and EL James's writing style."[2] Fifty Shames of Earl Grey was a Goodreads choice 2012 semi-finalist.[3]
Bibliography[edit]

Fifty Shames of Earl Grey: A Parody, Da Capo Press, Massachusetts, 2012.
