Gay Marriage Comes to Florida, or Does It?



 
Florida is a state that has been at the center of the gay marriage fight for a while, with many different aspects coming to the forefront.
It was decided that gay marriage would be legal in Florida, and then a stay was petitioned for, and a judge ruled against the stay, then Florida's Attorney General (Pamela Bondi) vowed to fight to keep gay marriage illegal, and then decided that it was inevitable and reversed her decision.  Gay couples are ready to get married.
Now, a new snag is happening.  A number of courthouses have reported that their clerks are not comfortable issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, so a decision has been made that NO couples will be able to get married in their courthouses, whether they are straight or gay.
‘It was decided as a team, as an office, this would be what we do so that there wouldn’t be any discrimination … The easiest way is to not do them at all.  I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Personally it would go against my beliefs to perform a ceremony that is other than that.’

India Elects First Trans Mayor




 
An independent candidate yesterday (4 January) became the first transgender mayor of an Indian city after winning election in Raigarh. Madhu Kinnar, 35, beat the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate by 4,537 votes in Chhattisgarh state's sixth largest city.
'People voted for me as promises made by BJP and Congress [parties] were never fulfilled. My victory is a reflection of peoples' love and blessings,'
Kinnar, who is from the 'untouchable' Dalit caste, dropped out of school after eighth grade and used to sing and dance on trains for money.  She said cleanliness and the construction of drains were her priorities.

Conchita Wurst and Vladimir Putin?



 
Conchita Wurst rose to fame as the first drag queen to win the Eurovision Song contest last year.  Since then, Wurst has been busy, with appearances at Pride events across Europe, and recording her debut CD.  Her latest single (Heroes) went Top 10 in her native Austria.
She's now made headlines by saying that she (actually, he, in his out of drag identity of Thomas Neuwirth) would like to spend a week with Russian leader, Vladimir Putin.  Putin has been in the headlines for a number of reasons, one of them the anti-gay laws he's enacted in Russia.
So why would Thomas/Conchita want to spend time with him?
‘I wouldn’t refuse a meeting with Putin… I would like to spend a week with Putin, so I can better understand him.  What does it mean to be Vladimir Putin? What pressure is he under?  At the end of the day, Putin just wants to be respected.  This desire for respect unites Putin with minorities.’

Gay Tourism & Argentina




 
Gay tourism is booming in Argentina. The pink pound brought in a whopping $1.2b to the country's economy in 2014, according to the Tourism Ministry's National Institute for Tourism Promotion.
More than 445,000 LGBTIs descended on the country this year, says the TMNITP. Research shows there was an especially high concentration of queer travelers in Buenos Aires.  One in five visitors to the Argentine capital were gay this year, according to data collected by the organisation. Argentina has long been known for its gay-friendly attitude, legalising gay marriage in 2010, becoming the first South American country – and the tenth worldwide – to do so.  Meanwhile, Buenos Aires's gay pride parade regularly attracts 150,000 marchers.
Argentina also made the news earlier this week, when it was reported the country was stocking what was thought to be the world's first trans doll.

New Year, New Season of RuPaul's Drag Race



 
With the large number of reality shows/competitions that are aired now, one never knows which shows will stay around and which shows will be cancelled.
RuPaul's drag race has been a ratings hit for the Logo network, and season 7 is getting ready to start.
Prior season winners include Jinx Monsoon, Sharon Needles, and last season's Bianca Del Rio.  Past contestants have gone on to record music, or star in TV commercials (Manila Luzon and Alyssa Edwards for Orbitz,  Bianca Del Rio & Adore DeLano for Starbucks).  There are even cruises you can go on, to meet and watch the past contestants perform.
RuPaul as assembled a cast of 14 new queens who are ready to compete for the crown of "Next Drag Superstar".

Pedro Almodovar's Brokeback...Too Sexy?



 
Brokeback Mountain is now rightly regarded as one of the best films of the new millennium. But its lasting popularity and beauty wasn’t always so obvious. In fact, a number of directors, actors and studios flirted with the project before Ang Lee, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Heath Ledger took the plunge and actually made the film. One such name was Pedro Almodovar, who has now admitted that he was one of the directors who decided against adapting Brokeback Mountain for the big screen - but only because he didn’t believe his highly-sexualised version would be approved by a studio.
It’s safe to say that Pedro Almodovar’s hesitation was Ang Lee’s gain, because at the 2006 Academy Award ceremony Lee was presented with the Best Director award for his work on Brokeback Mountain. And while Ang Lee’s decadently romantic, yet still truly heart-breaking take on Annie Proulx’s short-story fully deserved this accolade, it’s hard not to be intrigued by Pedro Almodovar’s proposed version of the film.

OUTVETS To Make History



 
In a narrowly decided vote (5 - 4) The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (AWVC) has moved to allow the organization OUTVETS (an organization of out service men and women) to march with their banner in the 2015 St. Patrick's Day parade.
“I’m ecstatic with the vote,” said Robert Santiago, chief operating officer for OUTVETS. “It was based primarily on our status as veterans. All veterans deserve to be recognized for their service. We will be marching as veterans who happen to be gay.”
The Boston St. Patrick's Day parade has been going on since 1901, and there have been many debates of whether or not LGBT people should be allowed to walk in the parade, which is a parade in honor of a religious figure, St. Patrick.
From 1992-1994 state courts forced the AWVC to let the Irish-American Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Group of Boston participate, but the event’s sponsors responded by calling off the parades altogether. In 1995, this resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court voting unanimously to not allow LGBT groups to march via freedom of speech for the AWVC.
OUTVETS is the first nonpartisan, nonpolitical veterans organization in the nation. This lack of social agenda led the AWVC to decide that OUTVETS could participate. The vote comes after OUTVETS’ historic appearance as the first ever LGBT group to march in Boston’s Veterans Day Parade this past November. The group was able to rally a total of 23 people to participate.

South Dakota & Gay Marriage



 
Gay marriage took another step forward on Monday (January 12th) when a judge in South Dakota struck down that state's gay marriage ban.
US District Court Judge Karen Schreier ruled that ['i]plaintiffs have a fundamental right to marry. South Dakota law deprives them of that right solely because they are same-sex couples and without sufficient justification.'[/i]
However, gay couples in SD shouldn't begin lining up for marriage certificates, as she has placed a stay on her own judgment, which will give the state the chance to appeal her decision. 
While not happy with the stay, gay rights groups were happy with the ruling.   'We are thrilled for our clients and for all same-sex couples in South Dakota, who have watched and waited as progress has been made in so many other states, and who can now see light at the end of the tunnel in their own state,' stated National Center for Lesbian Rights Senior Staff Attorney Christopher F. Stoll. 'We hope this decision will hasten the day when the Supreme Court decides this issue for the country and ensures that all families are treated fairly and equally under the law.'

Anniversary for The British Armed Forces



 
Second Sea Lord Admiral Sir David Steel (pictured left) is nearing his retirement, but first he had a major event to celebrate.  On January 12th, he attended a dinner that that marked the 15th anniversary of the British Armed Forces allowing LGBT members to serve openly.
While he was hosting the event, Steel made a speech where he said (in part):  ‘I could highlight improved weapon systems, better equipment overall, or the advance of technology.  My greatest pride, however, is reserved for the way in which, in a relatively short time, the culture of our work place has changed, to embrace talent regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation.'
He briefly touched on the past, commenting on the 'interrogations and witch-hunts' that took place, trying to find LGBT members who were in the closet, and remove them from the forces.  Thankfully, those are part of the past.

A Warning About Taylor Swift




 
Taylor Swift has long been seen as "America's Sweetheart", scoring multiple top country and pop hits.  Her most recent CD is titled "1989", and with it she has stepped away from country, releasing her first pure pop CD.  The plan has worked for her, the CD's first single "Shake It Off", spent 4 weeks at #1, and the follow-up, "Blank Space" is currently the #1 single in America.  On top of that, "1989" has sold over 3 million copies, and she was the ONLY artist to release a CD in 2014 that won any platinum awards.
Now, Pastor Larry Tomczak is claiming that Taylor Swift is being used to make young people accept gay people.
According to Tomczak, Ellen DeGeneres uses her show to promote a gay lifestyle, and to 'flaunt' her 'marriage' to Portia.  She in turn books acts like Taylor Swift to attract younger viewers, and to 'teach' them that being gay is "ok".
As for Taylor, she has long been an advocate for her gay fans, and has said:   "My parents taught me never to judge others based on whom they love, what color their skin is, or their religion. Why make life miserable for someone when you could be using your energy for good?"

A Lawsuit for Snoop Dogg?



 
Rapper/Producer Snoop Dogg is no stranger to making gay slurs, and had used his Twitter feed to call a follower a 'fag' in the past.
He finds himself in the same sort of trouble, and possibly facing a lawsuit.
Snoop Dogg had posted a picture of a follower of his, who is gay, on his Instagram page.  He then captioned the picture with 'Whose auntcle is this?', which resulted in over 40,000 "Likes" and even more anti-gay posts, calling the person in the picture a "faggot", or "shemale".
The picture is of Cortez Booze, and Booze reported the picture to Instagram but it had not been taken down. He has hired a lawyer and is preparing a lawsuit against the rapper.

Gay Twins Come Out



 
YouTube personalities Austin and Aaron Rhodes have had a significant social media following since they began loading clips to their channel nearly six months ago.
This week, the pair decided to start off 2015 in a major way by utilizing their platform to both come out as gay to their father over the phone while recording the event in order to share it with their followers -- and the world.
This video inspires a roller coaster of emotions, as the boys initially struggle to get the words out. When they finally do, their father offers the perfect response to his sons: "It's the way things are, you know? You're grown people. You grew up in a lot different generation than me. I just don't really know what to say -- you know I love you both and that'll never change."
When individuals come out of the closet we're always moved and inspired but there's something especially incredible about a set of twins living authentically and openly together (and letting us take part in such a special moment).

Australia....What a Drag!



 
The changing face and colourful history of Melbourne's drag culture is on display at an exhibition, from the underground movement in the 1960s, the sparkling disco era of the 1970s and today's modern glitz and glamour.
The curator of the What A Drag! exhibition, Ricky Beirao, is a performer who goes by the name of 'Rhubarb Rouge'.
"I saw so much history and passion about it, so I thought why not put this all together for people to learn about it, for the younger generation to really respect what people have done for them to be able to do what they do now.  A lot of people take for granted... and they just think it's old people fighting for the golden days.  I thought it would be great [for people] to learn, after all those people fought for them to be able to wear a dress right now."

Gay Marriage & The Supreme Court



 
The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to decide whether all 50 states must allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, positioning it to resolve one of the great civil rights questions in a generation before its current term ends in June.
The decision came just months after the justices ducked the issue, refusing in October to hear appeals from rulings allowing same-sex marriage in five states. That decision, which was considered a major surprise, delivered a tacit victory for gay rights, immediately expanding the number of states with same-sex marriage to 24, along with the District of Columbia, up from 19.
Gay rights advocates hailed the court’s move on Friday as one of the final steps in a decades-long journey toward equal treatment, and they expressed confidence they would prevail.
“We are finally within sight of the day when same-sex couples across the country will be able to share equally in the joys, protections and responsibilities of marriage,” said Jon W. Davidson, the legal director of Lambda Legal.
Supporters of traditional marriage said the Supreme Court now has a chance to return the issue to voters and legislators.
“Lower court judges have robbed millions of people of their voice and vote on society’s most fundamental relationship — marriage,” said Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, a conservative policy and lobbying group. “There is nothing in the Constitution that empowers the courts to silence the people and impose a nationwide redefinition of marriage.”

The most recent episode of Glee revealed that recurring character Shannon Beiste (the football coach) revealed that she is transgendered, and will transition from female to male.
Beiste, portrayed by Emmy nominee Dot Marie Jones, shared with school principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and assistant football coach Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) that he has gender dysphoria - the formal diagnosis used by psychologists and physicians to describe people who identify as transgender.
Sylvester, naturally, gets a few zingers in: 'When you think about it, it's not that big of a stretch.' But even the normally heartless Sylvester shows she has a heart when she tells Beiste that his job will be waiting for her. 'We've got your back.'

What is Billy Crystal Talking About?


 
Billy Crystal has been onstage almost his whole life, starting as a stand-up comic, going on to Saturday Night Live, Soap, multiple TV spots and movies, and even hosting awards shows.  His character on Soap is remembered as one of the first 'out' characters on prime time TV.
In a recent interview, Crystal made a statement about gay sex scenes and TV.  Actor Billy Crystal has said graphic scenes of gay sex on TV have gone too far, and the industry must take care not to 'shove it in our face'.  He went on to say that contemporary programs are 'pushing it a little too far'.  He declined to cite any examples, but implied that intolerant attitudes he struggled with while playing Jodie Dallas from 1977 to 1981 have now swung the other way.
He also said that his comments apply to heterosexual sex scenes as well as gay ones.  He said: 'When it gets too far either visually…now, that world exists because it does for the hetero world, it exists, and I don’t want to see that either.'

Michelle Williams in 'Manchester-by-the-Sea'




Michelle Williams is joining Casey Affleck in Manchester-by-the-Sea, the new Kenneth Lonergan drama.
The movie is heading toward a March start date in New England with Kevin Walsh, Chris Moore and Matt Damon, who was originally set to star, producing.
Lonergan wrote the script, which tells of a ne'er-do-well plumber (Affleck) in Boston who is forced to return home to the titular town after he learns his brother passed away. There, he finds himself thrust into the care of the man's 16-year-old son but finds himself crumbling due to a secret tragedy in his past.  Williams will play Affleck's wife.
Williams last starred in Disney's 2013 tentpole Oz the Great and Powerful and has the World War II indie drama Suite francaise in the can.

Students Rejected for Gay Parents



 
Brian Copeland (left, in picture) is a proud father of two children, and he was just about to take the step that all fathers take, enrolling his kids into school.
He met with the administration at the Davidson Academy in Nashville, Tn., and everything seemed to be going well, and then Copeland mentioned that he was married.  To his husband....Greg Bullard, right in pic.
When the school realized they were dealing with a same-sex couple, the meeting ended and then later a rejection letter was sent to Copeland, which read, in part:   Any lifestyle conduct which is in opposition to the mission of Davidson Academy or which impedes the school's credibility with its constituency or the general public is unacceptable. One example of such lifestyle is homosexuality.
Copeland and Bullard do not wish to press charges or seek any legal action against the school, but are expressing frustration that it is "very, very hard" to find a private school that offers the rigorous faith-based education they want for their children that won't discriminate against a married gay couple.

Oklahoma Adjusts to Same-Sex Marriage!



 
When Tracy and Kathryn decided to get married after same-sex marriage was made legal in Oklahoma, they didn't hesitate.  The very next day, they went to the courthouse and got married after getting their license and a quick 2 and 1/2 minute ceremony.  Afterwards Kathryn went to work, and Tracy went home and cried, because to her, it felt like they checked an item off the list, but didn't really get married.
It was at that point that Tracy and Kathryn decided to have a ceremony, but they were unsure where to go or how to start.  They turned to friends, but the friends found themselves in the same place as Tracy and Katherine, unable to plan a wedding, and having no ideas how to plan a gay wedding.
They also ran into discrimination, as a venue who was ready to host their reception cancelled on them, stating they wouldn't host a same-sex wedding.

The Doodler Murders



 
From January 1974 to September 1975, San Francisco was the hunting grounds of a serial killer called The Doodler.  He got the name after his habit of drawing caricatures of gay men in the bars that he met.  Flattered with the attention he showed them, they would leave with him, and their bodies would be found later.
The Doodler has 5 or 6 victims that are definitely his, however, there are counts that go as high as 14 victims.
The case of the Doodler is often overlooked, and it is suggested that there are a few reasons why.  The first is that the victims were gay, and not a sympathetic group of people.  On top of that, just 4 1/2 years after the killings stopped, the first patient with AIDS was discovered, which took any attention The Doodler case had and focused it elsewhere.

ONE, Inc. was a gay rights organization established in the United States in 1952.   In January 1953 ONE, Inc. began publishing a monthly magazine called ONE, the first U.S. pro-gay publication, which it sold openly on the streets of Los Angeles for 25 cents.
While the magazine was off to a good start, it hit stumbling blocks just over a year later in October 1954.  It was that year that the U.S. Post Office Department declared the magazine "obscene" and refused to deliver it.
In reponse to this, ONE, Inc. brought a lawsuit in federal court, which it won in 1958, when the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the lower court ruling in One, Inc. v. Olesen based on its recent landmark First Amendment case, Roth v. United States.
The magazine ceased publication in 1967.

Minnesota Teacher Killed


 
A teacher, a coach, a mentor and ally to LGBTI teens was the victim of a fatal shooting on Saturday (24 January).
David Frigaard, a 46-year-old who taught art at Park High School in Minnesota, was killed in Mahtomedi close to a bar he owned.  The Washington County Sheriff's office has confirmed a suspect is in custody.  The 19-year-old suspect was arrested and booked into the Washington County jail pending homicide charges.
While no motive has been determined, with no charges made so far, unconfirmed social media reports suggested that Frigaard could have been killed because he ran the straight-gay alliance at the school.  It has now emerged the teen had allegedly gone to Frigaard's bar, and after being refused service, got angry.  As well as teaching art and helping LGBTI teens, Frigaard also served as an at-risk program teacher, and was a football, girls track and basketball coach.
Frigaard was a married man, had three kids and had taught art classes for the past four years.

“Constellations,” with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson, is such a big hit, the powers that be at Manhattan Theatre Club are kicking themselves because they didn’t book it into a different theater.
It’s at the Samuel J. Friedman, MTC’s flagship Broadway theater, only until March 15, when it has to clear out to make way for MTC’s next production, something called “Airline Highway.”  I have no idea what that play’s about, but I can’t imagine it’s going “to take off” (I am so clever today!) the way “Constellations” has.
If you don’t have a ticket for “Constellations” in your hand right now, you’re probably not going to get in. The run, I’m told, will be sold out by the end of next week.
“If they were in another theater, they could extend this thing until the Tony Awards, probably longer,” says a producer.
This is the biggest hit MTC has had since “Venus in Fur” in 2011.

They've Got What Jeb Bush Wants



 
Campaigning for President of the United States is not just appearances around the country anymore.  It also means having up-to-date websites, as well as being on top of social media like Twitter and Facebook.
Republican Jeb Bush has made his dreams of being president very clear, and that means that he needs a website, which should be called "JebBushForPresident.com".  That however, is not going to happen as it has come to light that someone else has already started a website with that address, and they are not about to give it up to Jeb Bush.
The domain was purchased by CJ Phillips and Charlie Rainmaker,  a self described “bear couple” from Oregon.   They opted to buy the domain name back in 2008 when it was rumored that Jeb would run.
CJ and Charlie say they plan to use the domain name for a blog, where they will publicly discuss Jeb Bush's poor voting records on equality.
The page is currently idle, but the couple plans to activate it when they find time.

Which Segments of the LGBT Community Oppose Gay Marriage?



 
Pew released a study with percentages of LGBT Americans who oppose, or are indifferent to, same-sex marriage and which LGBT demographic groups are most opposed to same-sex marriage reports The Washington Post. The data, collected in 2013, reveals that seven percent of LGBT Americans outright oppose same-sex marriage while another 18 percent of the same group says they may favor it, but that they don't feel strongly about marriage. One of the most telling figures from the study is that 39 percent of the LGBT community said that the marriage fight is taking focus off other issues of importance to them.
The study is only representative of those polled for the study and not a complete representation of all LGBT Americans views on same-sex marriage. Transgender people were also surveyed for the study however, according to Pew the sample size was too small to analyze separately.

Mike Huckabee & Gay Marriage



 
Mike Huckabee wants to be the Republican party's nominee for president, and he's been giving interviews on his views on various topics.
In a recent interview, Huckabee compared being gay to swearing and drinking.
"People can be my friends who have lifestyles that are not necessarily my lifestyle. I don't shut people out of my circle or out of my life because they have a different point of view.  I don't drink alcohol, but gosh -- a lot of my friends, maybe most of them, do. You know, I don't use profanity, but believe me, I've got a lot of friends who do. Some people really like classical music and ballet and opera -- it's not my cup of tea."
Huckabee pointed to President Barack Obama's 2008 opposition to same-sex marriage, but said there's no chance he'll ever drop his opposition to gay marriage.  "This is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue. And as a biblical issue -- unless I get a new version of the scriptures, it's really not my place to say, OK, I'm just going to evolve,"

Mumbai Pride Unites Parents & Children




 
Mumbai just recently had their 8th pride march, and it turned out to be their largest parade to date.  Not only that, but there was a large amount of parents who turned out to march, to show support for their LGBTI children.
India's Mid-Day news quoted a mother who says she wants a traditional wedding for her gay son. 'It took me a few years to accept the reality that my son is gay. Initially, I used to curse him, but gradually learnt to accept him. It's every parents' dream to have a grand wedding for their child and I want the same. I have been to Europe and seen a gay marriage and that’s how I came to know that in some countries, gay marriages are allowed,' said Swati.
After an eight year battle, gay sex was decriminalized in 2009, however, in December of 2013 the Supreme Court of India reversed that decision and recriminalized gay sex.  It's thought that the high turnout of parents is because of the recriminalization of gay sex, and they turned out to support their children, and show their disapproval of the law.

Bruce Jenner Transitioning


 
For quite some time, there have been numerous rumors swirling around former Olympian Bruce Jenner.  He's been in the public eye for some time, due to his involvement with the reality TV show Keeping Up With The Kardashians.   Fans of the show watched to see what the Kardashian sisters were up to, and watched as the marriage between Bruce and Kris Kardashian fell apart.
However, Bruce has been getting attention for a different matter.  He has grown his hair out, his nails have gotten longer (and occasionally appeared painted), plastic surgeries on his face, and the most recent was a tracheal shave, all of which are steps that transgendered men take when they opt to transition to female.
According to recent reports, a source close to the family has confirmed that Jenner is transitioning.  He has not issued a statement himself on this matter, but the story from the source has been picked up by multiple news sources, and is being featured on TMZ and People.

Song One




Anne Hathaway won an Oscar for singing and acting in "Les Misrables" (2012), and she sings one tune in her latest film, which unfolds amid the lively indie music scene of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
But it's not like she's dying to release a record or tackle more musicals. "I love music, and I've always really loved singing, but I never had the fire in my belly for performing music that I did for acting," she says. "If something comes up, a musical that's offered, that will be a lovely thing to consider, but I'm not looking for more chances to sing."
Still, her heart-tugging cover of that 1970s pop ballad "I Need You" in "Song One" suggests there could be a new hobby for Hathaway, if nothing more. And surely some band that covers America's pop-rock hits is looking for a vocalist.
Making movies is Hathaway's passion. And while reviews of "Song One" have been indifferent she still hopes that "Song One" will find its audience.

Gay Blogger Threatened with Expulsion



 
Austin Wallis (right in picture) is a 17 year old in Texas, who has his own YouTube channel, where he makes videos that have gay positive messages, and encourages gay youth to be themselves.
Austin never expected anything negative to happen in connection to his videos, but that's what happened when he was called to the principal's office during the school day.  He was told by principal that they could not allow him to remain in school and promote a "sinful lifestyle" so he had to choose, to either remove his videos from YouTube, or leave the school.  
Austin opted to leave school, and made a video explaining what happened.  “I had to leave all my friends, and all my teachers, and I don’t want people to think I left just because of the social media.  “It was because I can’t stay somewhere where I feel like I’m being forced into something that I’m not and where I feel like I’m not wanted by my own principal and head of the board.”
According to the head of the school, the situation is being “misrepresented” but defended the school’s right to expel students for being gay, which is considered “intrinsically sinful” by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Gay Marriage Comes to Alabama Over Chief Judge's Objections



 
Alabama's chief justice built his career on defiance: In 2003, Roy Moore was forced from the bench for disobeying a federal court order to remove a boulder-size Ten Commandments monument from the state courthouse.
On Monday, as Alabama became the 37th state where gays can legally wed, Moore took a defiant stand again, employing the kind of states' rights language used during the Civil War era and again during the civil rights movement.
He argued that a federal judge's Jan. 23 ruling striking down the Bible Belt state's gay-marriage ban was an illegal intrusion on Alabama's sovereignty. And he demanded the state's probate judges refuse marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Moore's 11th-hour effort to block gay weddings brought immediate comparisons to Alabama Gov. George Wallace's 1960s vow of "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" and his fight against what he portrayed as the tyranny of the federal government.
"Moore is using the religion issue to further his political career, just as Wallace used the race issue to further his," said Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a major civil rights organization.

The Queen Supports Gay Marriage



 
The Queen of England thinks gay marriage is 'wonderful'.   Well, at least according to newlywed Stephen Fry, she did.
The QI host Saturday (7 February) told The Jonathan Ross Show that Queen Elizabeth II had expressed approval when signing the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in July 2013. 'It was only last summer that Her Majesty The Queen gave the Royal Assent,' he said. 'When the Queen signed the Royal Assent for the equal marriages act, allowing gay people to marry for the first time, she put it down and said "Well, who’d have thought 62 years ago when I came to the throne, I’d be signing something like this? Isn’t it wonderful?"'
While the story is very positive, the article also explains that while she did give the Royal Assent, the Queen has not actually made any public statement either for or against gay marriage.

Ghana School Tries to Lynch Two Gay Students




 
Two students at an all-boys high school were arrested in Ghana after their classmates tried to lynch them for sodomy.
Police were called to St Paul’s Senior High School in Danu Friday night (6 February) after students started rioting over two boys they caught having sex. One first-year student was killed in the incident. Local media reported that the mob turned on their teachers who they accused of protecting the boys and preventing them from 'delivering instant justice.'
They stormed the teacher's bungalow, smashed car windscreens, destroyed school property, barricaded the roads in the school compound and burned truck tyres. The police were called in to restore order but the students threw stones at them. The police fired warning shots in attempt to disperse the mob, one of which hit a student in the head and killed him.

Sam Smith took home both the Record of the Year and Song of the Year prizes for his song "Stay With Me" at the Grammy Awards on Sunday (8 February). The openly gay singer also won for Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour and was voted Best New Artist.
Overall, he won in four of the six categories he was nominated in - more than any other artist this year.
'Thank you all for the best night of my life,' he told the star-studded crowd at Staples Center in Los Angeles as he accepted Record of the Year. Smith also thanked someone who he used to love whose rejection fueled the material. 'Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys,' he said.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Drug-Smuggling Drama



 

Jake Gyllenhaal’s career has never been better. After ending 2014 with a wave of critical acclaim for his portrayal as Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler, he looks set to build upon this recognition in 2015 with a number of interesting projects. And it now turns out that Jake Gyllenhaal is looking even further afield than that with The Man Who Made It Snow.
Jake Gyllenhaal had signed up to star in Antoine Fuqua’s Colombian crime-biopic several months back, but now the film has taken a huge leap forward thanks to Harvey Weinstein. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it was announced by the Weinsten Co. at the Berlin Film Festival that they have struck a co-financing deal with IM Global. In fact things are already steamrolling ahead quite nicely as foreign buyers are starting to invest in The Man Who Made It Snow. The film has reportedly progressed to such an extent that a decision has been made to start shooting by the end of this year, which we can assume should lead to it being released in 2016.

Antoine Fuqua was quick to announce that he is thrilled to be working alongside Jake Gyllenhaal once again, having recently directed the actor in the upcoming Southpaw.   "I am thrilled to bring this compelling and true story to the screen with Jake. The National Film Registry selects 25 films each year showcasing the range and diversity of American film heritage to increase awareness for its preservation.
Your voice is important! Librarian of Congress Dr. James H. Billington invites you to submit your recommendations for movies to be included on the National Film Registry. Public nominations play a key role when the Librarian and Film Board are considering their final selections. To be eligible for the Registry, a film must be at least 10 years old and be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
The National Film Registry historically has included only those films that were produced or co-produced by an American film company, typically for theatrical release or recognized as a film through film festivals or film awards. If in doubt, check the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) for country of origin. Registry criteria does not specifically prohibit television programs, commercials, music videos or foreign productions, however, the original intent of the legislation that established the Registry was to safeguard U.S. films. Consequently the National Film Preservation Board and the Librarian of Congress give first consideration to American motion pictures.
For consideration, please forward your recommendations (limit 50 titles per year) via email to: filmregistry@loc.gov. Please include the date of the film nominated, and number your recommendations. Listing your nominations in alphabetical order is very much appreciated, too.

Mary Cheney: Why is Drag 'Socially Acceptable' and Blackface Isn't?



 
If a man can dress up as a woman to entertain an audience, then why can't a white person get on stage in blackface, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney wondered aloud Thursday in a private Facebook post obtained by CNN.
"Why is it socially acceptable -- as a form of entertainment -- for men to put on dresses, make up and high heels and act out every offensive stereotype of women (bitchy, catty, dumb, slutty, etc.) -- but it is not socially acceptable -- as a form of entertainment -- for a white person to put on blackface and act out offensive stereotypes of African Americans?" Cheney wrote in a post on Thursday her private Facebook page. Some of Cheney's posts appear to only be visible to those who are in her Facebook network.
She states she thought of this post after channel surfing and coming across the RuPaul's Drag Race tv show, where drag queens compete against each other.   This prompted a reply from RuPaul's Drag Race, which is posted to YouTube.

Out Navy SEAL to Address LGBT Gala



 
The first openly gay Navy SEAL, who served during the era of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” is set to deliver an address at the annual gala of an LGBT military group, the organization announced Friday.
Brett Jones, who received an honorable discharge in 2003, is set to address the second annual gala for the American Military Partner Association on May 9 at the Hyatt Regency in Washington, D.C. The event is expected to draw up to 500 military couples.
Ashley Broadway-Mack, president of the American Military Partner Association, called Jones "an American hero” because his service “inspires us in our work to advance fairness and equality for our nation’s LGBT service members, veterans, and their families.” “His story is no doubt a tremendous help to many young LGBT service members who may be struggling with who they are, and it is a true testament to the strength that diversity brings to our nation’s Armed Forces,” Broadway-Mack said.

Gareth Thomas Delivers Anti-Bullying Message




 
WELSH rugby legend Gareth Thomas visited the Potteries to give a talk on anti-bullying - and opened up about his experience at the hands of bullies.  The 6ft 3 former back - who became the world’s first openly gay rugby player in 2009 - still remembers the ‘horrible times’ he went through at the age of 11 for two years when he was teased for his ginger hair and rugby boots.
And Gareth, who won 100 caps for Wales, was at the Excel Academy in Sneyd Green and the Ormiston Horizon Academy in Chell to deliver his anti-bullying message.  The 40-year-old, who attended as part of his work for Prospero Teaching, said: “I’ve been keen to highlight bullying and the effects of it.
“So many children know it’s the wrong thing to do, but sometimes they don’t realise they do it themselves.  In terms of the rugby boots, if you don’t have the best of something, it’s perceived as a weakness. I wanted to get across that I understand the effects of bullying and the power of words.”
He added: “I thought the kids at the Excel Academy were great. As long as they leave the school aware of a situation of bullying and that they can do something about it, that’s my job done.”

Leave Bruce Jenner Alone


 
Former Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner’s decision to transition from a man into a woman has been met with mixed reactions from the media and population at large. The pending change has also caused local and national transgender groups to call for people to be more sensitive towards Jenner’s perceived choice, and to denounce those who are turning what is largely viewed as Jenner’s journey into a punchline.
“This is something that I think could push somebody over the edge as a transperson,” Rachel Hudson told the local CBS News affiliate in Sacramento. Rachel is a transgender person who works with the Sacramento Gender Health Center. She started life off as a man and in 1999 made the decision to leave behind a wife, son and house in order to become a woman.
Among the statements Rachel perceives as being insensitive are those from individuals such as the man who hosts a parody YouTube news show called “Shot of the Day” in which he said during a recent broadcast, “Have you seen Bruce Jenner lately? I can’t tell the different between Bruce Jenner and Nancy Pelosi.”

Ang Lee Narrows Lead Actor Choices



 

Shortly after Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 and Bona Film Group partnered with Tom Rothman’s Tristar and Film4 on the Ang Lee-directed Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, the filmmaker has boiled down to a shortlist his options for actors to play the title role. Lee wants a discovery and will surround him with a  supporting cast of established stars. My sources said that these guys are on the list: Billy Howle (the British series Glue), Taron Egerton (the upcoming Kingsman: The Secret Service), Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders) and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age Of Extinction and Glassland).
The adaptation of the Ben Fountain novel starts shooting in April. In the film, Bravo Company, and 19-year-old private Billy Lynn, survive a harrowing Iraq battle that is captured by news cameras. They are brought home by the U.S. administration for a promotional tour, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of a Thanksgiving Day football game, all while facing an imminent return to the war.

Brokeback Opera DVD/Blu-Ray Ready for Pre-order!



 

You'll all remember that in 2014, a group of Brokies got together in Madrid to witness the Brokeback Mountain opera.  The show featured Daniel Okulitch as Ennis Del Mar, and Tom Randle as Jack Twist.  It also featured a libretto that was written by Annie Proulx.
The show was recorded and will soon be available on DVD and Blu-ray.  You can wait for the official release, or you can pre-order it now.

A Gay Kiss on The Walking Dead



 
For a while last year there were numerous rumors that the character of Daryl Dixon was going to be revealed as gay in an upcoming episode on The Walking Dead.  As with most rumors, it turned out to be untrue, but we did find out that a gay couple was being added to the show.
Meet Eric (left) and Aaron (right).  In Sunday's episode, we first meet Aaron, who is a 'recruiter'.  He goes out and searches for survivors of the zombie plague, and if they appear  as if they would 'fit in' offer them sanctuary with him and others at the Alexandria Safe Zone, a town that has walled itself in, making itself 'zombie-free'.  During the episode we find our group of survivors is split.  Half has found Aaron, and are being attacked by zombies.  They manage to find safety in a large building, and find the other half of the survivors who have Eric with them, having saved him from being attacked.  This leads to an emotional reunion between the two, and a long kiss.
The Walking Dead has a high number of straight, male viewers, so the reaction online to the kiss as had a number of negative replies.   The link below takes you to the replies, as well as a video showing the kiss.

Gay Men in Ireland Targeted on Dating Sites




 
As public debates heat up ahead of Ireland’s same-sex marriage referendum to be held on May 22, LGBT people are being warned to take safety precautions when meeting strangers they have only ‘met’ online. The Irish Examiner reported this week that a series of reports of orchestrated attacks by assailants using websites and dating apps to attract their victim have surfaced.
A Facebook post by a woman Louise O’Donnell, who said that her friend had been attacked by a group of men having arranged a date through a website, has been widely shared. She wrote: 'Unfortunately, there is a group or groups of young people in Cork carrying out organised beatings against members of this community. Posing as young men and women on different sites including Tinder, Plenty of Fish and Grindr, they aim to get young gay and lesbians alone in secluded areas of the city to carry out vicious assaults.'
James Upton, auditor of University College Cork’s LGBT society, was quoted as saying in the report that he is aware of an increase in in physical and verbal homophobic attacks against the group’s members in the past six months. He added that he believes it to be a backlash against the LGBT community as the marriage equality referendum approaches. More than three in five people polled will vote to legalise same-sex marriage while one in six said they would be voting against a same-sex marriage, according to a poll this month.

Doctor Refuses to Treat Child of Lesbian Couple


 
A doctor will not look after a six-day-old baby because she has lesbian parents. Krista and Jamie Contreras, from Michigan, has said Dr Vesna Roi had initially agreed to be the pediatrician to their daughter Bay. But they were dumbfounded when they received a letter from the doctor, saying after 'much prayer', Roi had a change of heart.
The couple had went to Eastlake Pediatrics in Roseville to get a check up for Bay, and were told another doctor would have to see their daughter. 'I was completely dumbfounded,' Krista told the Detroit FreePress. 'We just looked at each other and said, "Did we hear that correctly?"' Jamie told myFOXDetroit.com: 'As far as we know Bay doesn't have a sexual orientation yet so I'm not really sure what that matters... 'We're not your patient - she's your patient. And the fact is that your job is to keep babies healthy and you can't keep a baby healthy that has gay parents?'
Unlike 22 US states, Michigan has no law banning doctors from discriminating based on sexual orientation. The parents, who were married in Vermont in 2012, said it was 'embarrassing' and 'humiliating'.

Ang Lee Narrows Lead Actor Choices



 

Shortly after Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 and Bona Film Group partnered with Tom Rothman’s Tristar and Film4 on the Ang Lee-directed Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, the filmmaker has boiled down to a shortlist his options for actors to play the title role. Lee wants a discovery and will surround him with a  supporting cast of established stars. My sources said that these guys are on the list: Billy Howle (the British series Glue), Taron Egerton (the upcoming Kingsman: The Secret Service), Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders) and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age Of Extinction and Glassland).
The adaptation of the Ben Fountain novel starts shooting in April. In the film, Bravo Company, and 19-year-old private Billy Lynn, survive a harrowing Iraq battle that is captured by news cameras. They are brought home by the U.S. administration for a promotional tour, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of a Thanksgiving Day football game, all while facing an imminent return to the war.

Lesbian Kiss on Murdoch Mysteries!



 

In the last published TDS, we discussed the male-to-male gay kiss that set Twitter on fire, when the current episode of The Walking Dead introduced their gay couple, Eric and Aaron.
It has often been discussed/pointed out that when a lesbian kiss is featured, it doesn't cause the amount of uproar that a kiss between men will.  While that may be true, it appears that a Canadian show has tested the waters with a gay couple of their own, and their recent first kiss has gotten reactions from both sides of the fence.
The show in question is Murdoch Mysteries.  Set in Toronto in the turn of the last century, one of the main characters on this show is Dr. Emily Grace.  Recently, Dr. Grace's sexuality was pushed to the forefront of an episode when she placed a romantic kiss on the character of Lillian.
In an interview with Michelle Ricci, one of the episode's writers, she discusses the kiss between the two characters, and how there have been positive and negative responses to the kiss, most notably a letter from a 14 year old girl who had just come out to her father.

379 Companies Urge Court To Support Gay Marriage



 
Big business has come out in favor of same-sex marriage.
Exactly 379 corporations and employer organizations urged the Supreme Court to strike down state bans on gay marriage, according to a friend-of-the-court brief obtained by The Huffington Post. The document was expected to be filed late Thursday morning.
“Employers are better served by a uniform marriage rule that gives equal dignity to employee relationships,” reads the brief, filed by global law firm Morgan Lewis. “Allowing same-sex couples to marry improves employee morale and productivity, reduces uncertainty, and removes the wasteful administrative burdens imposed by the current disparity of state law treatment.”
The list, provided in full below, includes corporate behemoths such as Coca-Cola Company, Goldman Sachs, Google and Morgan Stanley. It also includes brands like Ben & Jerry’s, a division of Unilever, and sports teams such as the New England Patriots, the San Francisco Giants and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Over 300 veteran Republican politicians and operatives have signed a friend of the court brief at the Supreme Court in support of same-sex marriage. The amicus brief, organized by openly gay former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, arrives ahead of the oral arguments before the Supreme Court in four same-sex marriage cases scheduled for April 28.
Among the signatories are 23 current and former Republicans members of the House of Representatives and Senate and seven current and former Governors. Sens. Susan Collins and Mark Kirk have signed onto the brief, as has Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman. Other notables include former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal and billionaire GOP mega-donor David Koch.
The 2013 brief included 131 signatures, featured many former top aides to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, including his general counsel and two senior advisors. The list has now grown to 303 signatories.
In an interview with TIME, Mehlman pointed to the growing national consensus and within the GOP on the issue. “There’s been an increase since the last time in public support for marriage equality across all ideological, racial, and political groups,” he said.

As dawn broke Sunday, a crowd gathered for the Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King Unity Breakfast at Wallace Community College. Other expected events Sunday include film screenings and a pre-march rally at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Police beat and tear-gassed marchers at the foot of the bridge in Selma on March 7, 1965, in an ugly spasm of violence that shocked the nation. The attack on demonstrators preceded the Selma-to-Montgomery march, which occurred two weeks later. Both helped build momentum for congressional approval of the Voting Rights Act later that year.  A march from Selma to Montgomery in remembrance of the journey the demonstrators took is set to begin Monday morning and culminate with a rally at the Alabama state Capitol on Friday afternoon.
President Barack Obama gave a rousing speech on the work left to be done to achieve equality and Obama also touched on improvements in American race relations.
“We just need to open our eyes, and ears, and hearts, to know that this nation’s racial history still casts its long shadow upon us,” Obama said. “We know the march is not yet over, the race is not yet won, and that reaching that blessed destination where we are judged by the content of our character requires admitting as much.  Ask the female CEO who once might have been assigned to the secretarial pool if nothing’s changed. Ask your gay friend if it’s easier to be out and proud in America now than it was 30 years ago. To deny this progress – our progress – would be to rob us of our own agency, our responsibility to do what we can to make America better."

Wellesley College Opens Its Doors to Transgender Women


 
Wellesley College this week clarified its stance toward including trans women, stating that the admissions department will accept applications from any student who "lives as a woman and consistently identifies as a woman," reports the Boston Globe.
After a year-long committee evaluation, the Seven Sisters school will now join U.S. women's colleges Bryn Mawr, Scripps, Simmons, Mount Holyoke, and Mills in explicitly accepting trans female students. Wellesley will also admit students assigned "female" at birth who do not identify as male or female, as well as allow trans male students who begin openly transitioning partway through college to graduate, according to a school-wide letter from Wellesley's Board of Trustees and president H. Kim Bottomly.
However, unlike recent policies put forth by Simmons and Bryn Mawr — which indicated that the schools were open to any students assigned "female" at birth, regardless of whether they identified as "male" at the time of submitting an application — Wellesley will not accept applications from trans men. Further, the Board clarified that school communications would continue using female pronouns to address the student body.

There's no denying Michelle William's come a long way from Dawson's Creek and, in Elle's exclusive interview, she discusses navigating Hollywood from film set to stage - and back home, where she simply plays 'mom' to Matilda, eight, her daughter with the late Heath Ledger.
‘You truly never know what’s going to happen,' she says of the unpredictability of theatre (having just ended a run playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret on Broadway). 'And to have things go wrong, or to make mistakes in real time and then be able to assimilate whatever is different is a tremendous feeling. To find in those moments that one doesn’t stop, or perish, or run away, but that you can rely on yourself to process things and keep going.’.
If that sounds exhausting - it is.
‘I feel like I’m so good at raising a kid when I’m not working,' she adds. 'I don’t forget anything. I’ve got everything covered. It’s a real luxury to have a moment when I’m not scrambling. I feel like most of my life, I’m trying to do two things at once, both to the best of my abilities.  So that leaves me feeling pretty exhausted. I’m the person who falls asleep all the time. Counting For Thunder - Complete!



 
In June of 2014, we gave you the story of Counting For Thunder, a movie being made by forum members welles (Philip), Sparky & TellYouWhat (Ellen).
Counting for Thunder is inspired by the three years when Phillip Irwin Cooper, unlucky in work, money and love, went home to the Gulf Coast of Alabama to help out with a family crisis. Working through his past with his complicated family, some old high school chums, and the desperate and hilarious southern characters who grace his hometown, Phillip ultimately finds his own voice as his mother is regaining hers for possibly the last time.   The cast includes  Emmy winner Mariette Hartley (who has appeared in Big Love, Grey’s Anatomy, Cold Case, Law & Order: SVU),  Emmy nominated John Heard  (Entourage, Prison Break, Battlestar Galactica, CSI: Miami and The Sopranos where he earned his nomination),  and Alison Elliott  (Wyatt Earp, The Underneath, Hello Ladies and The Miracle Worker).

We all became fully aware of fan videos on YouTube after Brokeback Mountain got a hold of us.  Over the years we've seen many fan videos that use various songs serving as a backdrop to footage of Brokeback Mountain.  One fan favorite that we've seen is the video done to the music of Nickelback's "Far Away".
We all know that film's can inspire people in various ways, and fan videos are often the result of that inspiration.  On of our own (foreverinawe) recently came to me with a video that he made after he was touched by the Rob Reiner film Stand By Me.
fia (as he signs his posts in the forum) has been making fan videos for quite some time now, and feels that his homage to Stand By Me (titled "Stand By Me - An Appreciation") is his best work to date.  He would like to share this video with you all, as well as his love for this film and why it has inspired him.

Madonna and Her Gay Fans



 
Pop star Madonna has just released her newest CD (Rebel Heart) as well as started selling tickets for the tour of the same name.  Madonna has long been supported by the gay community, and in turn, Madonna has long supported gay rights, and been a long time fund raiser for AIDS charities.  In a recent interview, Madonna was asked for her view on the gay community now, opposed to when she first started in the business.
Huffington Post:  You’ve been such an important part of the gay community for so long. What would be some differences between the gay audiences you see coming out in 2015 versus the audiences you saw in 2005 or 1995 or 1985? How have you seen the community evolve around you?
Madonna:  When I first came up, the whole AIDS epidemic was starting, and… the gay community that I experienced from the beginning of my career was mostly and overwhelmingly concerned with staying alive. I felt really aware of the preciousness of life and time… and people who were HIV positive were treated so badly. I was very disturbed by things, but I also saw a lot of love and connection in the gay community at that time.
Like all progress that is made in all marginalized communities or groups, I think, after time goes by and you earn certain rights or you break through certain barriers, you can sometimes take for granted what you have now that you didn't have before, and then that would lead to a certain lack of community in a way.

Aaron Schock in Spotlight


 
Rep. Aaron Schock (Republican - Illinois) has been in the spotlight a lot over the years.  He is a conservative Republican who has voted against gay marriage and for gay rights in general, however, there have often been rumors of Schock's own sexuality.  He recently found himself being "slashed", written into a M/M romantic story, his sex partner none other than Paul Ryan, recent Vice-Presidential hopeful who ran with Mitt Romney.
Now Schock is avoiding the press and answering questions, this time relating to possible violations of House ethics rules.  It seems that there are multiple questions about Schock's use of taxpayer and campaign money to pay for flights on private jets -- including planes owned by key donors -- concert tickets and other entertainment expenses.
The congressman traveled to India last August 24-29 on a trip sponsored by the Global Poverty Project, an international anti-poverty group. The group also paid for Schock's Dallas-based photographer, Jonathon Link, to accompany the congressman on the trip, the group's spokesperson confirmed. But Link's name appears nowhere on the travel disclosure form Schock filed afterwards, as required by House rules.   The fact that  Schock had a 'private photographer' who is male follow him to India and back has only fueled the rumor mills about Schock's sexuality.

Kim Ledger and His Work Against Prescription Drug Use


 
They were worlds apart in life. Heath Ledger, a Hollywood actor. Simon Millington, a qualified auto-electrician and the son of duck farmers from country Victoria.  But both men, the doting fathers of little girls, died just years apart from the same phenomenon - the abuse of prescription drugs, described as an epidemic in Australia by anti-drug abuse groups.  Now Kim Ledger, the late Academy Award winner's father, has joined an effort to fight prescription drug abuse after he was moved by a 'heartwrenching' letter from Simon's mother, Margaret.   The letter said Simon 'wanted to stay well for Maddie', his young daughter, 'but the hideous disease of addiction slowly crept back up again' and he died of a pain medication overdose in 2010.   'His life mattered,' Margaret wrote, 'and that is why I do what I do for others in similar circumstances.'
After receiving the emotional letter from Margaret and John Millington from Nhill, Victoria, and hosting a follow-up meeting with them last year, Mr Ledger today announced he will be the patron of the new not-for-profit Scriptwise, which will raise awareness about the dangers and solutions to prescription drug abuse.

Gay Marriage Comes to Florida, or Does It?



 
Florida is a state that has been at the center of the gay marriage fight for a while, with many different aspects coming to the forefront.
It was decided that gay marriage would be legal in Florida, and then a stay was petitioned for, and a judge ruled against the stay, then Florida's Attorney General (Pamela Bondi) vowed to fight to keep gay marriage illegal, and then decided that it was inevitable and reversed her decision.  Gay couples are ready to get married.
Now, a new snag is happening.  A number of courthouses have reported that their clerks are not comfortable issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, so a decision has been made that NO couples will be able to get married in their courthouses, whether they are straight or gay.
‘It was decided as a team, as an office, this would be what we do so that there wouldn’t be any discrimination … The easiest way is to not do them at all.  I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Personally it would go against my beliefs to perform a ceremony that is other than that.’

India Elects First Trans Mayor




 
An independent candidate yesterday (4 January) became the first transgender mayor of an Indian city after winning election in Raigarh. Madhu Kinnar, 35, beat the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate by 4,537 votes in Chhattisgarh state's sixth largest city.
'People voted for me as promises made by BJP and Congress [parties] were never fulfilled. My victory is a reflection of peoples' love and blessings,'
Kinnar, who is from the 'untouchable' Dalit caste, dropped out of school after eighth grade and used to sing and dance on trains for money.  She said cleanliness and the construction of drains were her priorities.

Conchita Wurst and Vladimir Putin?



 
Conchita Wurst rose to fame as the first drag queen to win the Eurovision Song contest last year.  Since then, Wurst has been busy, with appearances at Pride events across Europe, and recording her debut CD.  Her latest single (Heroes) went Top 10 in her native Austria.
She's now made headlines by saying that she (actually, he, in his out of drag identity of Thomas Neuwirth) would like to spend a week with Russian leader, Vladimir Putin.  Putin has been in the headlines for a number of reasons, one of them the anti-gay laws he's enacted in Russia.
So why would Thomas/Conchita want to spend time with him?
‘I wouldn’t refuse a meeting with Putin… I would like to spend a week with Putin, so I can better understand him.  What does it mean to be Vladimir Putin? What pressure is he under?  At the end of the day, Putin just wants to be respected.  This desire for respect unites Putin with minorities.’

Gay Tourism & Argentina




 
Gay tourism is booming in Argentina. The pink pound brought in a whopping $1.2b to the country's economy in 2014, according to the Tourism Ministry's National Institute for Tourism Promotion.
More than 445,000 LGBTIs descended on the country this year, says the TMNITP. Research shows there was an especially high concentration of queer travelers in Buenos Aires.  One in five visitors to the Argentine capital were gay this year, according to data collected by the organisation. Argentina has long been known for its gay-friendly attitude, legalising gay marriage in 2010, becoming the first South American country – and the tenth worldwide – to do so.  Meanwhile, Buenos Aires's gay pride parade regularly attracts 150,000 marchers.
Argentina also made the news earlier this week, when it was reported the country was stocking what was thought to be the world's first trans doll.

New Year, New Season of RuPaul's Drag Race



 
With the large number of reality shows/competitions that are aired now, one never knows which shows will stay around and which shows will be cancelled.
RuPaul's drag race has been a ratings hit for the Logo network, and season 7 is getting ready to start.
Prior season winners include Jinx Monsoon, Sharon Needles, and last season's Bianca Del Rio.  Past contestants have gone on to record music, or star in TV commercials (Manila Luzon and Alyssa Edwards for Orbitz,  Bianca Del Rio & Adore DeLano for Starbucks).  There are even cruises you can go on, to meet and watch the past contestants perform.

Pedro Almodovar's Brokeback...Too Sexy?



 
Brokeback Mountain is now rightly regarded as one of the best films of the new millennium. But its lasting popularity and beauty wasn’t always so obvious. In fact, a number of directors, actors and studios flirted with the project before Ang Lee, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Heath Ledger took the plunge and actually made the film. One such name was Pedro Almodovar, who has now admitted that he was one of the directors who decided against adapting Brokeback Mountain for the big screen - but only because he didn’t believe his highly-sexualised version would be approved by a studio.
It’s safe to say that Pedro Almodovar’s hesitation was Ang Lee’s gain, because at the 2006 Academy Award ceremony Lee was presented with the Best Director award for his work on Brokeback Mountain. And while Ang Lee’s decadently romantic, yet still truly heart-breaking take on Annie Proulx’s short-story fully deserved this accolade, it’s hard not to be intrigued by Pedro Almodovar’s proposed version of the film.

OUTVETS To Make History



 
In a narrowly decided vote (5 - 4) The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (AWVC) has moved to allow the organization OUTVETS (an organization of out service men and women) to march with their banner in the 2015 St. Patrick's Day parade.
“I’m ecstatic with the vote,” said Robert Santiago, chief operating officer for OUTVETS. “It was based primarily on our status as veterans. All veterans deserve to be recognized for their service. We will be marching as veterans who happen to be gay.”
The Boston St. Patrick's Day parade has been going on since 1901, and there have been many debates of whether or not LGBT people should be allowed to walk in the parade, which is a parade in honor of a religious figure, St. Patrick.
From 1992-1994 state courts forced the AWVC to let the Irish-American Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Group of Boston participate, but the event’s sponsors responded by calling off the parades altogether. In 1995, this resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court voting unanimously to not allow LGBT groups to march via freedom of speech for the AWVC.
OUTVETS is the first nonpartisan, nonpolitical veterans organization in the nation. This lack of social agenda led the AWVC to decide that OUTVETS could participate. The vote comes after OUTVETS’ historic appearance as the first ever LGBT group to march in Boston’s Veterans Day Parade this past November. The group was able to rally a total of 23 people to participate.

South Dakota & Gay Marriage



 
Gay marriage took another step forward on Monday (January 12th) when a judge in South Dakota struck down that state's gay marriage ban.
US District Court Judge Karen Schreier ruled that ['i]plaintiffs have a fundamental right to marry. South Dakota law deprives them of that right solely because they are same-sex couples and without sufficient justification.'[/i]
However, gay couples in SD shouldn't begin lining up for marriage certificates, as she has placed a stay on her own judgment, which will give the state the chance to appeal her decision. 
While not happy with the stay, gay rights groups were happy with the ruling.   'We are thrilled for our clients and for all same-sex couples in South Dakota, who have watched and waited as progress has been made in so many other states, and who can now see light at the end of the tunnel in their own state,' stated National Center for Lesbian Rights Senior Staff Attorney Christopher F. Stoll. 'We hope this decision will hasten the day when the Supreme Court decides this issue for the country and ensures that all families are treated fairly and equally under the law.'

Anniversary for The British Armed Forces



 
Second Sea Lord Admiral Sir David Steel (pictured left) is nearing his retirement, but first he had a major event to celebrate.  On January 12th, he attended a dinner that that marked the 15th anniversary of the British Armed Forces allowing LGBT members to serve openly.
While he was hosting the event, Steel made a speech where he said (in part):  ‘I could highlight improved weapon systems, better equipment overall, or the advance of technology.  My greatest pride, however, is reserved for the way in which, in a relatively short time, the culture of our work place has changed, to embrace talent regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation.'
He briefly touched on the past, commenting on the 'interrogations and witch-hunts' that took place, trying to find LGBT members who were in the closet, and remove them from the forces.  Thankfully, those are part of the past.

A Warning About Taylor Swift




 
Taylor Swift has long been seen as "America's Sweetheart", scoring multiple top country and pop hits.  Her most recent CD is titled "1989", and with it she has stepped away from country, releasing her first pure pop CD.  The plan has worked for her, the CD's first single "Shake It Off", spent 4 weeks at #1, and the follow-up, "Blank Space" is currently the #1 single in America.  On top of that, "1989" has sold over 3 million copies, and she was the ONLY artist to release a CD in 2014 that won any platinum awards.
Now, Pastor Larry Tomczak is claiming that Taylor Swift is being used to make young people accept gay people.
According to Tomczak, Ellen DeGeneres uses her show to promote a gay lifestyle, and to 'flaunt' her 'marriage' to Portia.  She in turn books acts like Taylor Swift to attract younger viewers, and to 'teach' them that being gay is "ok".
As for Taylor, she has long been an advocate for her gay fans, and has said:   "My parents taught me never to judge others based on whom they love, what color their skin is, or their religion. Why make life miserable for someone when you could be using your energy for good?"

A Lawsuit for Snoop Dogg?



 
Rapper/Producer Snoop Dogg is no stranger to making gay slurs, and had used his Twitter feed to call a follower a 'fag' in the past.
He finds himself in the same sort of trouble, and possibly facing a lawsuit.
Snoop Dogg had posted a picture of a follower of his, who is gay, on his Instagram page.  He then captioned the picture with 'Whose auntcle is this?', which resulted in over 40,000 "Likes" and even more anti-gay posts, calling the person in the picture a "faggot", or "shemale".
The picture is of Cortez Booze, and Booze reported the picture to Instagram but it had not been taken down. He has hired a lawyer and is preparing a lawsuit against the rapper.

Gay Twins Come Out



 
YouTube personalities Austin and Aaron Rhodes have had a significant social media following since they began loading clips to their channel nearly six months ago.
This week, the pair decided to start off 2015 in a major way by utilizing their platform to both come out as gay to their father over the phone while recording the event in order to share it with their followers -- and the world.
This video inspires a roller coaster of emotions, as the boys initially struggle to get the words out. When they finally do, their father offers the perfect response to his sons: "It's the way things are, you know? You're grown people. You grew up in a lot different generation than me. I just don't really know what to say -- you know I love you both and that'll never change."
When individuals come out of the closet we're always moved and inspired but there's something especially incredible about a set of twins living authentically and openly together (and letting us take part in such a special moment).

The changing face and colourful history of Melbourne's drag culture is on display at an exhibition, from the underground movement in the 1960s, the sparkling disco era of the 1970s and today's modern glitz and glamour.
The curator of the What A Drag! exhibition, Ricky Beirao, is a performer who goes by the name of 'Rhubarb Rouge'.
"I saw so much history and passion about it, so I thought why not put this all together for people to learn about it, for the younger generation to really respect what people have done for them to be able to do what they do now.  A lot of people take for granted... and they just think it's old people fighting for the golden days.  I thought it would be great [for people] to learn, after all those people fought for them to be able to wear a dress right now."

Gay Marriage & The Supreme Court



 
The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to decide whether all 50 states must allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, positioning it to resolve one of the great civil rights questions in a generation before its current term ends in June.
The decision came just months after the justices ducked the issue, refusing in October to hear appeals from rulings allowing same-sex marriage in five states. That decision, which was considered a major surprise, delivered a tacit victory for gay rights, immediately expanding the number of states with same-sex marriage to 24, along with the District of Columbia, up from 19.
Gay rights advocates hailed the court’s move on Friday as one of the final steps in a decades-long journey toward equal treatment, and they expressed confidence they would prevail.
“We are finally within sight of the day when same-sex couples across the country will be able to share equally in the joys, protections and responsibilities of marriage,” said Jon W. Davidson, the legal director of Lambda Legal.
Supporters of traditional marriage said the Supreme Court now has a chance to return the issue to voters and legislators.
“Lower court judges have robbed millions of people of their voice and vote on society’s most fundamental relationship — marriage,” said Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, a conservative policy and lobbying group. “There is nothing in the Constitution that empowers the courts to silence the people and impose a nationwide redefinition of marriage.”

The most recent episode of Glee revealed that recurring character Shannon Beiste (the football coach) revealed that she is transgendered, and will transition from female to male.
Beiste, portrayed by Emmy nominee Dot Marie Jones, shared with school principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and assistant football coach Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) that he has gender dysphoria - the formal diagnosis used by psychologists and physicians to describe people who identify as transgender.
Sylvester, naturally, gets a few zingers in: 'When you think about it, it's not that big of a stretch.' But even the normally heartless Sylvester shows she has a heart when she tells Beiste that his job will be waiting for her. 'We've got your back.'

What is Billy Crystal Talking About?


 
Billy Crystal has been onstage almost his whole life, starting as a stand-up comic, going on to Saturday Night Live, Soap, multiple TV spots and movies, and even hosting awards shows.  His character on Soap is remembered as one of the first 'out' characters on prime time TV.
In a recent interview, Crystal made a statement about gay sex scenes and TV.  Actor Billy Crystal has said graphic scenes of gay sex on TV have gone too far, and the industry must take care not to 'shove it in our face'.  He went on to say that contemporary programs are 'pushing it a little too far'.  He declined to cite any examples, but implied that intolerant attitudes he struggled with while playing Jodie Dallas from 1977 to 1981 have now swung the other way.
He also said that his comments apply to heterosexual sex scenes as well as gay ones.  He said: 'When it gets too far either visually…now, that world exists because it does for the hetero world, it exists, and I don’t want to see that either.'

Michelle Williams in 'Manchester-by-the-Sea'




Michelle Williams is joining Casey Affleck in Manchester-by-the-Sea, the new Kenneth Lonergan drama.
The movie is heading toward a March start date in New England with Kevin Walsh, Chris Moore and Matt Damon, who was originally set to star, producing.
Lonergan wrote the script, which tells of a ne'er-do-well plumber (Affleck) in Boston who is forced to return home to the titular town after he learns his brother passed away. There, he finds himself thrust into the care of the man's 16-year-old son but finds himself crumbling due to a secret tragedy in his past.  Williams will play Affleck's wife.
Williams last starred in Disney's 2013 tentpole Oz the Great and Powerful and has the World War II indie drama Suite francaise in the can.

Students Rejected for Gay Parents



 
Brian Copeland (left, in picture) is a proud father of two children, and he was just about to take the step that all fathers take, enrolling his kids into school.
He met with the administration at the Davidson Academy in Nashville, Tn., and everything seemed to be going well, and then Copeland mentioned that he was married.  To his husband....Greg Bullard, right in pic.
When the school realized they were dealing with a same-sex couple, the meeting ended and then later a rejection letter was sent to Copeland, which read, in part:   Any lifestyle conduct which is in opposition to the mission of Davidson Academy or which impedes the school's credibility with its constituency or the general public is unacceptable. One example of such lifestyle is homosexuality.
Copeland and Bullard do not wish to press charges or seek any legal action against the school, but are expressing frustration that it is "very, very hard" to find a private school that offers the rigorous faith-based education they want for their children that won't discriminate against a married gay couple.

Oklahoma Adjusts to Same-Sex Marriage!



 
When Tracy and Kathryn decided to get married after same-sex marriage was made legal in Oklahoma, they didn't hesitate.  The very next day, they went to the courthouse and got married after getting their license and a quick 2 and 1/2 minute ceremony.  Afterwards Kathryn went to work, and Tracy went home and cried, because to her, it felt like they checked an item off the list, but didn't really get married.
It was at that point that Tracy and Kathryn decided to have a ceremony, but they were unsure where to go or how to start.  They turned to friends, but the friends found themselves in the same place as Tracy and Katherine, unable to plan a wedding, and having no ideas how to plan a gay wedding.
They also ran into discrimination, as a venue who was ready to host their reception cancelled on them, stating they wouldn't host a same-sex wedding.

The Doodler Murders



 
From January 1974 to September 1975, San Francisco was the hunting grounds of a serial killer called The Doodler.  He got the name after his habit of drawing caricatures of gay men in the bars that he met.  Flattered with the attention he showed them, they would leave with him, and their bodies would be found later.
The Doodler has 5 or 6 victims that are definitely his, however, there are counts that go as high as 14 victims.
The case of the Doodler is often overlooked, and it is suggested that there are a few reasons why.  The first is that the victims were gay, and not a sympathetic group of people.  On top of that, just 4 1/2 years after the killings stopped, the first patient with AIDS was discovered, which took any attention The Doodler case had and focused it elsewhere.

ONE, Inc. was a gay rights organization established in the United States in 1952.   In January 1953 ONE, Inc. began publishing a monthly magazine called ONE, the first U.S. pro-gay publication, which it sold openly on the streets of Los Angeles for 25 cents.
While the magazine was off to a good start, it hit stumbling blocks just over a year later in October 1954.  It was that year that the U.S. Post Office Department declared the magazine "obscene" and refused to deliver it.
In reponse to this, ONE, Inc. brought a lawsuit in federal court, which it won in 1958, when the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the lower court ruling in One, Inc. v. Olesen based on its recent landmark First Amendment case, Roth v. United States.
The magazine ceased publication in 1967.

Minnesota Teacher Killed


 
A teacher, a coach, a mentor and ally to LGBTI teens was the victim of a fatal shooting on Saturday (24 January).
David Frigaard, a 46-year-old who taught art at Park High School in Minnesota, was killed in Mahtomedi close to a bar he owned.  The Washington County Sheriff's office has confirmed a suspect is in custody.  The 19-year-old suspect was arrested and booked into the Washington County jail pending homicide charges.
While no motive has been determined, with no charges made so far, unconfirmed social media reports suggested that Frigaard could have been killed because he ran the straight-gay alliance at the school.  It has now emerged the teen had allegedly gone to Frigaard's bar, and after being refused service, got angry.  As well as teaching art and helping LGBTI teens, Frigaard also served as an at-risk program teacher, and was a football, girls track and basketball coach.
Frigaard was a married man, had three kids and had taught art classes for the past four years.

“Constellations,” with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson, is such a big hit, the powers that be at Manhattan Theatre Club are kicking themselves because they didn’t book it into a different theater.
It’s at the Samuel J. Friedman, MTC’s flagship Broadway theater, only until March 15, when it has to clear out to make way for MTC’s next production, something called “Airline Highway.”  I have no idea what that play’s about, but I can’t imagine it’s going “to take off” (I am so clever today!) the way “Constellations” has.
If you don’t have a ticket for “Constellations” in your hand right now, you’re probably not going to get in. The run, I’m told, will be sold out by the end of next week.
“If they were in another theater, they could extend this thing until the Tony Awards, probably longer,” says a producer.
This is the biggest hit MTC has had since “Venus in Fur” in 2011.

They've Got What Jeb Bush Wants



 
Campaigning for President of the United States is not just appearances around the country anymore.  It also means having up-to-date websites, as well as being on top of social media like Twitter and Facebook.
Republican Jeb Bush has made his dreams of being president very clear, and that means that he needs a website, which should be called "JebBushForPresident.com".  That however, is not going to happen as it has come to light that someone else has already started a website with that address, and they are not about to give it up to Jeb Bush.
The domain was purchased by CJ Phillips and Charlie Rainmaker,  a self described “bear couple” from Oregon.   They opted to buy the domain name back in 2008 when it was rumored that Jeb would run.
CJ and Charlie say they plan to use the domain name for a blog, where they will publicly discuss Jeb Bush's poor voting records on equality.
The page is currently idle, but the couple plans to activate it when they find time.

Which Segments of the LGBT Community Oppose Gay Marriage?



 
Pew released a study with percentages of LGBT Americans who oppose, or are indifferent to, same-sex marriage and which LGBT demographic groups are most opposed to same-sex marriage reports The Washington Post. The data, collected in 2013, reveals that seven percent of LGBT Americans outright oppose same-sex marriage while another 18 percent of the same group says they may favor it, but that they don't feel strongly about marriage. One of the most telling figures from the study is that 39 percent of the LGBT community said that the marriage fight is taking focus off other issues of importance to them.
The study is only representative of those polled for the study and not a complete representation of all LGBT Americans views on same-sex marriage. Transgender people were also surveyed for the study however, according to Pew the sample size was too small to analyze separately.

Mike Huckabee & Gay Marriage



 
Mike Huckabee wants to be the Republican party's nominee for president, and he's been giving interviews on his views on various topics.
In a recent interview, Huckabee compared being gay to swearing and drinking.
"People can be my friends who have lifestyles that are not necessarily my lifestyle. I don't shut people out of my circle or out of my life because they have a different point of view.  I don't drink alcohol, but gosh -- a lot of my friends, maybe most of them, do. You know, I don't use profanity, but believe me, I've got a lot of friends who do. Some people really like classical music and ballet and opera -- it's not my cup of tea."
Huckabee pointed to President Barack Obama's 2008 opposition to same-sex marriage, but said there's no chance he'll ever drop his opposition to gay marriage.  "This is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue. And as a biblical issue -- unless I get a new version of the scriptures, it's really not my place to say, OK, I'm just going to evolve,"

Mumbai just recently had their 8th pride march, and it turned out to be their largest parade to date.  Not only that, but there was a large amount of parents who turned out to march, to show support for their LGBTI children.
India's Mid-Day news quoted a mother who says she wants a traditional wedding for her gay son. 'It took me a few years to accept the reality that my son is gay. Initially, I used to curse him, but gradually learnt to accept him. It's every parents' dream to have a grand wedding for their child and I want the same. I have been to Europe and seen a gay marriage and that’s how I came to know that in some countries, gay marriages are allowed,' said Swati.
After an eight year battle, gay sex was decriminalized in 2009, however, in December of 2013 the Supreme Court of India reversed that decision and recriminalized gay sex.  It's thought that the high turnout of parents is because of the recriminalization of gay sex, and they turned out to support their children, and show their disapproval of the law.

For quite some time, there have been numerous rumors swirling around former Olympian Bruce Jenner.  He's been in the public eye for some time, due to his involvement with the reality TV show Keeping Up With The Kardashians.   Fans of the show watched to see what the Kardashian sisters were up to, and watched as the marriage between Bruce and Kris Kardashian fell apart.
However, Bruce has been getting attention for a different matter.  He has grown his hair out, his nails have gotten longer (and occasionally appeared painted), plastic surgeries on his face, and the most recent was a tracheal shave, all of which are steps that transgendered men take when they opt to transition to female.
According to recent reports, a source close to the family has confirmed that Jenner is transitioning.  He has not issued a statement himself on this matter, but the story from the source has been picked up by multiple news sources, and is being featured on TMZ and People.

Song One




Anne Hathaway won an Oscar for singing and acting in "Les Misrables" (2012), and she sings one tune in her latest film, which unfolds amid the lively indie music scene of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
But it's not like she's dying to release a record or tackle more musicals. "I love music, and I've always really loved singing, but I never had the fire in my belly for performing music that I did for acting," she says. "If something comes up, a musical that's offered, that will be a lovely thing to consider, but I'm not looking for more chances to sing."
Still, her heart-tugging cover of that 1970s pop ballad "I Need You" in "Song One" suggests there could be a new hobby for Hathaway, if nothing more. And surely some band that covers America's pop-rock hits is looking for a vocalist.
Making movies is Hathaway's passion. And while reviews of "Song One" have been indifferent she still hopes that "Song One" will find its audience.

Gay Blogger Threatened with Expulsion



 
Austin Wallis (right in picture) is a 17 year old in Texas, who has his own YouTube channel, where he makes videos that have gay positive messages, and encourages gay youth to be themselves.
Austin never expected anything negative to happen in connection to his videos, but that's what happened when he was called to the principal's office during the school day.  He was told by principal that they could not allow him to remain in school and promote a "sinful lifestyle" so he had to choose, to either remove his videos from YouTube, or leave the school.  
Austin opted to leave school, and made a video explaining what happened.  “I had to leave all my friends, and all my teachers, and I don’t want people to think I left just because of the social media.  “It was because I can’t stay somewhere where I feel like I’m being forced into something that I’m not and where I feel like I’m not wanted by my own principal and head of the board.”
According to the head of the school, the situation is being “misrepresented” but defended the school’s right to expel students for being gay, which is considered “intrinsically sinful” by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Gay Marriage Comes to Alabama Over Chief Judge's Objections



 
Alabama's chief justice built his career on defiance: In 2003, Roy Moore was forced from the bench for disobeying a federal court order to remove a boulder-size Ten Commandments monument from the state courthouse.
On Monday, as Alabama became the 37th state where gays can legally wed, Moore took a defiant stand again, employing the kind of states' rights language used during the Civil War era and again during the civil rights movement.
He argued that a federal judge's Jan. 23 ruling striking down the Bible Belt state's gay-marriage ban was an illegal intrusion on Alabama's sovereignty. And he demanded the state's probate judges refuse marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Moore's 11th-hour effort to block gay weddings brought immediate comparisons to Alabama Gov. George Wallace's 1960s vow of "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" and his fight against what he portrayed as the tyranny of the federal government.
"Moore is using the religion issue to further his political career, just as Wallace used the race issue to further his," said Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a major civil rights organization.

The Queen Supports Gay Marriage



 
The Queen of England thinks gay marriage is 'wonderful'.   Well, at least according to newlywed Stephen Fry, she did.
The QI host Saturday (7 February) told The Jonathan Ross Show that Queen Elizabeth II had expressed approval when signing the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in July 2013. 'It was only last summer that Her Majesty The Queen gave the Royal Assent,' he said. 'When the Queen signed the Royal Assent for the equal marriages act, allowing gay people to marry for the first time, she put it down and said "Well, who’d have thought 62 years ago when I came to the throne, I’d be signing something like this? Isn’t it wonderful?"'
While the story is very positive, the article also explains that while she did give the Royal Assent, the Queen has not actually made any public statement either for or against gay marriage.

Ghana School Tries to Lynch Two Gay Students




 
Two students at an all-boys high school were arrested in Ghana after their classmates tried to lynch them for sodomy.
Police were called to St Paul’s Senior High School in Danu Friday night (6 February) after students started rioting over two boys they caught having sex. One first-year student was killed in the incident. Local media reported that the mob turned on their teachers who they accused of protecting the boys and preventing them from 'delivering instant justice.'
They stormed the teacher's bungalow, smashed car windscreens, destroyed school property, barricaded the roads in the school compound and burned truck tyres. The police were called in to restore order but the students threw stones at them. The police fired warning shots in attempt to disperse the mob, one of which hit a student in the head and killed him.

Sam Smith took home both the Record of the Year and Song of the Year prizes for his song "Stay With Me" at the Grammy Awards on Sunday (8 February). The openly gay singer also won for Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour and was voted Best New Artist.
Overall, he won in four of the six categories he was nominated in - more than any other artist this year.
'Thank you all for the best night of my life,' he told the star-studded crowd at Staples Center in Los Angeles as he accepted Record of the Year. Smith also thanked someone who he used to love whose rejection fueled the material. 'Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys,' he said.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s career has never been better. After ending 2014 with a wave of critical acclaim for his portrayal as Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler, he looks set to build upon this recognition in 2015 with a number of interesting projects. And it now turns out that Jake Gyllenhaal is looking even further afield than that with The Man Who Made It Snow.
Jake Gyllenhaal had signed up to star in Antoine Fuqua’s Colombian crime-biopic several months back, but now the film has taken a huge leap forward thanks to Harvey Weinstein. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it was announced by the Weinsten Co. at the Berlin Film Festival that they have struck a co-financing deal with IM Global. In fact things are already steamrolling ahead quite nicely as foreign buyers are starting to invest in The Man Who Made It Snow. The film has reportedly progressed to such an extent that a decision has been made to start shooting by the end of this year, which we can assume should lead to it being released in 2016.

Antoine Fuqua was quick to announce that he is thrilled to be working alongside Jake Gyllenhaal once again, having recently directed the actor in the upcoming Southpaw.   "I am thrilled to bring this compelling and true story to the screen with Jake. The National Film Registry selects 25 films each year showcasing the range and diversity of American film heritage to increase awareness for its preservation.
Your voice is important! Librarian of Congress Dr. James H. Billington invites you to submit your recommendations for movies to be included on the National Film Registry. Public nominations play a key role when the Librarian and Film Board are considering their final selections. To be eligible for the Registry, a film must be at least 10 years old and be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
The National Film Registry historically has included only those films that were produced or co-produced by an American film company, typically for theatrical release or recognized as a film through film festivals or film awards. If in doubt, check the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) for country of origin. Registry criteria does not specifically prohibit television programs, commercials, music videos or foreign productions, however, the original intent of the legislation that established the Registry was to safeguard U.S. films. Consequently the National Film Preservation Board and the Librarian of Congress give first consideration to American motion pictures.
For consideration, please forward your recommendations (limit 50 titles per year) via email to: filmregistry@loc.gov. Please include the date of the film nominated, and number your recommendations. Listing your nominations in alphabetical order is very much appreciated, too.

Mary Cheney: Why is Drag 'Socially Acceptable' and Blackface Isn't?



 
If a man can dress up as a woman to entertain an audience, then why can't a white person get on stage in blackface, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney wondered aloud Thursday in a private Facebook post obtained by CNN.
"Why is it socially acceptable -- as a form of entertainment -- for men to put on dresses, make up and high heels and act out every offensive stereotype of women (bitchy, catty, dumb, slutty, etc.) -- but it is not socially acceptable -- as a form of entertainment -- for a white person to put on blackface and act out offensive stereotypes of African Americans?" Cheney wrote in a post on Thursday her private Facebook page. Some of Cheney's posts appear to only be visible to those who are in her Facebook network.
She states she thought of this post after channel surfing and coming across the RuPaul's Drag Race tv show, where drag queens compete against each other.   This prompted a reply from RuPaul's Drag Race, which is posted to YouTube.

Out Navy SEAL to Address LGBT Gala



 
The first openly gay Navy SEAL, who served during the era of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” is set to deliver an address at the annual gala of an LGBT military group, the organization announced Friday.
Brett Jones, who received an honorable discharge in 2003, is set to address the second annual gala for the American Military Partner Association on May 9 at the Hyatt Regency in Washington, D.C. The event is expected to draw up to 500 military couples.
Ashley Broadway-Mack, president of the American Military Partner Association, called Jones "an American hero” because his service “inspires us in our work to advance fairness and equality for our nation’s LGBT service members, veterans, and their families.” “His story is no doubt a tremendous help to many young LGBT service members who may be struggling with who they are, and it is a true testament to the strength that diversity brings to our nation’s Armed Forces,” Broadway-Mack said.

Gareth Thomas Delivers Anti-Bullying Message




 
WELSH rugby legend Gareth Thomas visited the Potteries to give a talk on anti-bullying - and opened up about his experience at the hands of bullies.  The 6ft 3 former back - who became the world’s first openly gay rugby player in 2009 - still remembers the ‘horrible times’ he went through at the age of 11 for two years when he was teased for his ginger hair and rugby boots.
And Gareth, who won 100 caps for Wales, was at the Excel Academy in Sneyd Green and the Ormiston Horizon Academy in Chell to deliver his anti-bullying message.  The 40-year-old, who attended as part of his work for Prospero Teaching, said: “I’ve been keen to highlight bullying and the effects of it.
“So many children know it’s the wrong thing to do, but sometimes they don’t realise they do it themselves.  In terms of the rugby boots, if you don’t have the best of something, it’s perceived as a weakness. I wanted to get across that I understand the effects of bullying and the power of words.”
He added: “I thought the kids at the Excel Academy were great. As long as they leave the school aware of a situation of bullying and that they can do something about it, that’s my job done.”

Former Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner’s decision to transition from a man into a woman has been met with mixed reactions from the media and population at large. The pending change has also caused local and national transgender groups to call for people to be more sensitive towards Jenner’s perceived choice, and to denounce those who are turning what is largely viewed as Jenner’s journey into a punchline.
“This is something that I think could push somebody over the edge as a transperson,” Rachel Hudson told the local CBS News affiliate in Sacramento. Rachel is a transgender person who works with the Sacramento Gender Health Center. She started life off as a man and in 1999 made the decision to leave behind a wife, son and house in order to become a woman.
Among the statements Rachel perceives as being insensitive are those from individuals such as the man who hosts a parody YouTube news show called “Shot of the Day” in which he said during a recent broadcast, “Have you seen Bruce Jenner lately? I can’t tell the different between Bruce Jenner and Nancy Pelosi.”

Lee wants a discovery and will surround him with a  supporting cast of established stars. My sources said that these guys are on the list: Billy Howle (the British series Glue), Taron Egerton (the upcoming Kingsman: The Secret Service), Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders) and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age Of Extinction and Glassland).
The adaptation of the Ben Fountain novel starts shooting in April. In the film, Bravo Company, and 19-year-old private Billy Lynn, survive a harrowing Iraq battle that is captured by news cameras. They are brought home by the U.S. administration for a promotional tour, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of a Thanksgiving Day football game, all while facing an imminent return to the war.

You'll all remember that in 2014, a group of Brokies got together in Madrid to witness the Brokeback Mountain opera.  The show featured Daniel Okulitch as Ennis Del Mar, and Tom Randle as Jack Twist.  It also featured a libretto that was written by Annie Proulx.

A Gay Kiss on The Walking Dead



 
For a while last year there were numerous rumors that the character of Daryl Dixon was going to be revealed as gay in an upcoming episode on The Walking Dead.  As with most rumors, it turned out to be untrue, but we did find out that a gay couple was being added to the show.
Meet Eric (left) and Aaron (right).  In Sunday's episode, we first meet Aaron, who is a 'recruiter'.  He goes out and searches for survivors of the zombie plague, and if they appear  as if they would 'fit in' offer them sanctuary with him and others at the Alexandria Safe Zone, a town that has walled itself in, making itself 'zombie-free'.  During the episode we find our group of survivors is split.  Half has found Aaron, and are being attacked by zombies.  They manage to find safety in a large building, and find the other half of the survivors who have Eric with them, having saved him from being attacked.  This leads to an emotional reunion between the two, and a long kiss.
The Walking Dead has a high number of straight, male viewers, so the reaction online to the kiss as had a number of negative replies.   The link below takes you to the replies, as well as a video showing the kiss.

Gay Men in Ireland Targeted on Dating Sites




 
As public debates heat up ahead of Ireland’s same-sex marriage referendum to be held on May 22, LGBT people are being warned to take safety precautions when meeting strangers they have only ‘met’ online. The Irish Examiner reported this week that a series of reports of orchestrated attacks by assailants using websites and dating apps to attract their victim have surfaced.
A Facebook post by a woman Louise O’Donnell, who said that her friend had been attacked by a group of men having arranged a date through a website, has been widely shared. She wrote: 'Unfortunately, there is a group or groups of young people in Cork carrying out organised beatings against members of this community. Posing as young men and women on different sites including Tinder, Plenty of Fish and Grindr, they aim to get young gay and lesbians alone in secluded areas of the city to carry out vicious assaults.'
James Upton, auditor of University College Cork’s LGBT society, was quoted as saying in the report that he is aware of an increase in in physical and verbal homophobic attacks against the group’s members in the past six months. He added that he believes it to be a backlash against the LGBT community as the marriage equality referendum approaches. More than three in five people polled will vote to legalise same-sex marriage while one in six said they would be voting against a same-sex marriage, according to a poll this month.

Doctor Refuses to Treat Child of Lesbian Couple


 
A doctor will not look after a six-day-old baby because she has lesbian parents. Krista and Jamie Contreras, from Michigan, has said Dr Vesna Roi had initially agreed to be the pediatrician to their daughter Bay. But they were dumbfounded when they received a letter from the doctor, saying after 'much prayer', Roi had a change of heart.
The couple had went to Eastlake Pediatrics in Roseville to get a check up for Bay, and were told another doctor would have to see their daughter. 'I was completely dumbfounded,' Krista told the Detroit FreePress. 'We just looked at each other and said, "Did we hear that correctly?"' Jamie told myFOXDetroit.com: 'As far as we know Bay doesn't have a sexual orientation yet so I'm not really sure what that matters... 'We're not your patient - she's your patient. And the fact is that your job is to keep babies healthy and you can't keep a baby healthy that has gay parents?'
Unlike 22 US states, Michigan has no law banning doctors from discriminating based on sexual orientation. The parents, who were married in Vermont in 2012, said it was 'embarrassing' and 'humiliating'.

Lesbian Kiss on Murdoch Mysteries!



 

In the last published TDS, we discussed the male-to-male gay kiss that set Twitter on fire, when the current episode of The Walking Dead introduced their gay couple, Eric and Aaron.
It has often been discussed/pointed out that when a lesbian kiss is featured, it doesn't cause the amount of uproar that a kiss between men will.  While that may be true, it appears that a Canadian show has tested the waters with a gay couple of their own, and their recent first kiss has gotten reactions from both sides of the fence.
The show in question is Murdoch Mysteries.  Set in Toronto in the turn of the last century, one of the main characters on this show is Dr. Emily Grace.  Recently, Dr. Grace's sexuality was pushed to the forefront of an episode when she placed a romantic kiss on the character of Lillian.
In an interview with Michelle Ricci, one of the episode's writers, she discusses the kiss between the two characters, and how there have been positive and negative responses to the kiss, most notably a letter from a 14 year old girl who had just come out to her father.

379 Companies Urge Court To Support Gay Marriage



 
Big business has come out in favor of same-sex marriage.
Exactly 379 corporations and employer organizations urged the Supreme Court to strike down state bans on gay marriage, according to a friend-of-the-court brief obtained by The Huffington Post. The document was expected to be filed late Thursday morning.
“Employers are better served by a uniform marriage rule that gives equal dignity to employee relationships,” reads the brief, filed by global law firm Morgan Lewis. “Allowing same-sex couples to marry improves employee morale and productivity, reduces uncertainty, and removes the wasteful administrative burdens imposed by the current disparity of state law treatment.”
The list, provided in full below, includes corporate behemoths such as Coca-Cola Company, Goldman Sachs, Google and Morgan Stanley. It also includes brands like Ben & Jerry’s, a division of Unilever, and sports teams such as the New England Patriots, the San Francisco Giants and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Over 300 veteran Republican politicians and operatives have signed a friend of the court brief at the Supreme Court in support of same-sex marriage. The amicus brief, organized by openly gay former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, arrives ahead of the oral arguments before the Supreme Court in four same-sex marriage cases scheduled for April 28.
Among the signatories are 23 current and former Republicans members of the House of Representatives and Senate and seven current and former Governors. Sens. Susan Collins and Mark Kirk have signed onto the brief, as has Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman. Other notables include former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal and billionaire GOP mega-donor David Koch.
The 2013 brief included 131 signatures, featured many former top aides to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, including his general counsel and two senior advisors. The list has now grown to 303 signatories.
In an interview with TIME, Mehlman pointed to the growing national consensus and within the GOP on the issue. “There’s been an increase since the last time in public support for marriage equality across all ideological, racial, and political groups,” he said.

Obama Mentions Gay/Women's Rights at Selma





As dawn broke Sunday, a crowd gathered for the Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King Unity Breakfast at Wallace Community College. Other expected events Sunday include film screenings and a pre-march rally at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Police beat and tear-gassed marchers at the foot of the bridge in Selma on March 7, 1965, in an ugly spasm of violence that shocked the nation. The attack on demonstrators preceded the Selma-to-Montgomery march, which occurred two weeks later. Both helped build momentum for congressional approval of the Voting Rights Act later that year.  A march from Selma to Montgomery in remembrance of the journey the demonstrators took is set to begin Monday morning and culminate with a rally at the Alabama state Capitol on Friday afternoon.
President Barack Obama gave a rousing speech on the work left to be done to achieve equality and Obama also touched on improvements in American race relations.
“We just need to open our eyes, and ears, and hearts, to know that this nation’s racial history still casts its long shadow upon us,” Obama said. “We know the march is not yet over, the race is not yet won, and that reaching that blessed destination where we are judged by the content of our character requires admitting as much.  Ask the female CEO who once might have been assigned to the secretarial pool if nothing’s changed. Ask your gay friend if it’s easier to be out and proud in America now than it was 30 years ago. To deny this progress – our progress – would be to rob us of our own agency, our responsibility to do what we can to make America better."

Wellesley College Opens Its Doors to Transgender Women


 
Wellesley College this week clarified its stance toward including trans women, stating that the admissions department will accept applications from any student who "lives as a woman and consistently identifies as a woman," reports the Boston Globe.
After a year-long committee evaluation, the Seven Sisters school will now join U.S. women's colleges Bryn Mawr, Scripps, Simmons, Mount Holyoke, and Mills in explicitly accepting trans female students. Wellesley will also admit students assigned "female" at birth who do not identify as male or female, as well as allow trans male students who begin openly transitioning partway through college to graduate, according to a school-wide letter from Wellesley's Board of Trustees and president H. Kim Bottomly.
However, unlike recent policies put forth by Simmons and Bryn Mawr — which indicated that the schools were open to any students assigned "female" at birth, regardless of whether they identified as "male" at the time of submitting an application — Wellesley will not accept applications from trans men. Further, the Board clarified that school communications would continue using female pronouns to address the student body.

There's no denying Michelle William's come a long way from Dawson's Creek and, in Elle's exclusive interview, she discusses navigating Hollywood from film set to stage - and back home, where she simply plays 'mom' to Matilda, eight, her daughter with the late Heath Ledger.
‘You truly never know what’s going to happen,' she says of the unpredictability of theatre (having just ended a run playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret on Broadway). 'And to have things go wrong, or to make mistakes in real time and then be able to assimilate whatever is different is a tremendous feeling. To find in those moments that one doesn’t stop, or perish, or run away, but that you can rely on yourself to process things and keep going.’.
If that sounds exhausting - it is.
‘I feel like I’m so good at raising a kid when I’m not working,' she adds. 'I don’t forget anything. I’ve got everything covered. It’s a real luxury to have a moment when I’m not scrambling. I feel like most of my life, I’m trying to do two things at once, both to the best of my abilities.  So that leaves me feeling pretty exhausted. I’m the person who falls asleep all the time. You invite me over for dinner or to a party, and there’s a whole scrapbook of pictures of me napping. I’ve even been given a nickname because of my snoring.’

Counting For Thunder - Complete!



 
In June of 2014, we gave you the story of Counting For Thunder, a movie being made by forum members welles (Philip), Sparky & TellYouWhat (Ellen).
Counting for Thunder is inspired by the three years when Phillip Irwin Cooper, unlucky in work, money and love, went home to the Gulf Coast of Alabama to help out with a family crisis. Working through his past with his complicated family, some old high school chums, and the desperate and hilarious southern characters who grace his hometown, Phillip ultimately finds his own voice as his mother is regaining hers for possibly the last time.   The cast includes  Emmy winner Mariette Hartley (who has appeared in Big Love, Grey’s Anatomy, Cold Case, Law & Order: SVU),  Emmy nominated John Heard  (Entourage, Prison Break, Battlestar Galactica, CSI: Miami and The Sopranos where he earned his nomination),  and Alison Elliott  (Wyatt Earp, The Underneath, Hello Ladies and The Miracle Worker).

Forum Member's Fan Videos



 
We all became fully aware of fan videos on YouTube after Brokeback Mountain got a hold of us.  Over the years we've seen many fan videos that use various songs serving as a backdrop to footage of Brokeback Mountain.  One fan favorite that we've seen is the video done to the music of Nickelback's "Far Away".
We all know that film's can inspire people in various ways, and fan videos are often the result of that inspiration.  On of our own (foreverinawe) recently came to me with a video that he made after he was touched by the Rob Reiner film Stand By Me.
fia (as he signs his posts in the forum) has been making fan videos for quite some time now, and feels that his homage to Stand By Me (titled "Stand By Me - An Appreciation") is his best work to date.  He would like to share this video with you all, as well as his love for this film and why it has inspired him.

Madonna and Her Gay Fans



 
Pop star Madonna has just released her newest CD (Rebel Heart) as well as started selling tickets for the tour of the same name.  Madonna has long been supported by the gay community, and in turn, Madonna has long supported gay rights, and been a long time fund raiser for AIDS charities.  In a recent interview, Madonna was asked for her view on the gay community now, opposed to when she first started in the business.
Huffington Post:  You’ve been such an important part of the gay community for so long. What would be some differences between the gay audiences you see coming out in 2015 versus the audiences you saw in 2005 or 1995 or 1985? How have you seen the community evolve around you?
Madonna:  When I first came up, the whole AIDS epidemic was starting, and… the gay community that I experienced from the beginning of my career was mostly and overwhelmingly concerned with staying alive. I felt really aware of the preciousness of life and time… and people who were HIV positive were treated so badly. I was very disturbed by things, but I also saw a lot of love and connection in the gay community at that time.
Like all progress that is made in all marginalized communities or groups, I think, after time goes by and you earn certain rights or you break through certain barriers, you can sometimes take for granted what you have now that you didn't have before, and then that would lead to a certain lack of community in a way.

San Francisco Giants Hold LGBT Night

Aaron Schock in Spotlight


 
Rep. Aaron Schock (Republican - Illinois) has been in the spotlight a lot over the years.  He is a conservative Republican who has voted against gay marriage and for gay rights in general, however, there have often been rumors of Schock's own sexuality.  He recently found himself being "slashed", written into a M/M romantic story, his sex partner none other than Paul Ryan, recent Vice-Presidential hopeful who ran with Mitt Romney.
Now Schock is avoiding the press and answering questions, this time relating to possible violations of House ethics rules.  It seems that there are multiple questions about Schock's use of taxpayer and campaign money to pay for flights on private jets -- including planes owned by key donors -- concert tickets and other entertainment expenses.
The congressman traveled to India last August 24-29 on a trip sponsored by the Global Poverty Project, an international anti-poverty group. The group also paid for Schock's Dallas-based photographer, Jonathon Link, to accompany the congressman on the trip, the group's spokesperson confirmed. But Link's name appears nowhere on the travel disclosure form Schock filed afterwards, as required by House rules.   The fact that  Schock had a 'private photographer' who is male follow him to India and back has only fueled the rumor mills about Schock's sexuality.

Kim Ledger and His Work Against Prescription Drug Use


 
They were worlds apart in life. Heath Ledger, a Hollywood actor. Simon Millington, a qualified auto-electrician and the son of duck farmers from country Victoria.  But both men, the doting fathers of little girls, died just years apart from the same phenomenon - the abuse of prescription drugs, described as an epidemic in Australia by anti-drug abuse groups.  Now Kim Ledger, the late Academy Award winner's father, has joined an effort to fight prescription drug abuse after he was moved by a 'heartwrenching' letter from Simon's mother, Margaret.   The letter said Simon 'wanted to stay well for Maddie', his young daughter, 'but the hideous disease of addiction slowly crept back up again' and he died of a pain medication overdose in 2010.   'His life mattered,' Margaret wrote, 'and that is why I do what I do for others in similar circumstances.'
After receiving the emotional letter from Margaret and John Millington from Nhill, Victoria, and hosting a follow-up meeting with them last year, Mr Ledger today announced he will be the patron of the new not-for-profit Scriptwise, which will raise awareness about the dangers and solutions to prescription drug abuse.
