There are a lot of atheists out there who are not fond of very many religious charities and I can understand why.  Some charities give much-needed necessities to poverty-stricken countries in order to proselytize to people.  Some religious charities won't give anything unless you convert to the religious group first, which is despicable.  Some religious groups don't engage in charitable acts because they believe the world is going to end soon and most non-members of their group are going to die in a divine apocalyptic war anyways, so they don't see the point of engaging in charitable acts.  The story of the Good Samaritan is one of the more positive stories in the Bible and it has some pretty good advice.
