You cannot exploit or dehumanize a dead person; only the perception of them. They have no rights, as they no longer exist. They have no consciousness by which they can be in any sense posthumously affected. There's literally no question of ethics to consider. It isn't ethical or unethical; it is non-ethical.

This is a non-issue. I don't think it has a thing to do with humanism. I don't remember anyone complaining when the "Bill and Ted" movie exploited the images of Beethoven, Napoleon, Joan of Arc, and Genghis Khan. If it's a copyright issue with the music, make it one.

I'll go Better Off Damned one further and say that most artists of Jackson's ilk go into the business and stay in business precisely BECAUSE they WANT to be remembered in any way possible beyond their death. They sign contracts that actually have language designed to give others (including record companies) the rights to continue on with their legacy after death. This is not something any artist expects the industry to do for free, so to what extent anybody would be "exploited" here, or to what level the industry is actually doing anything wrong, other than simply going about business-as-usual, is even further in question. This brings up a lot of issues that are worth discussing, but first one must define the limits of loaded terms like "commodifying," "exploiting," "bought-and-sold," etc. They are going to be different in each instance and for each artists. There's no hard and fast here. From a strictly humanist standpoint, we may WISH there were and we may feel a compulsion to choose a position from which to make a stand for purely virtuous reasons. Alas, that is neither realist nor completely honest.

The issue is more one of increased technology then about posthumous "exploitation." No doubt an audio recording might have seemed eerily lifelike 100 years ago and would have raised the same "issues." Photographs "outlast" their subjects, and would not disturb anyone who views them in the same circumstances. The still camera, the moving image, the hologram...these are all moving along in the same direction. Get freaked out if you will, but let a market continue to thrive on Jackson's "brand" as long as there is any life in it. He is gone and beyond being harmed. His corporation is not a person but can still produce an income for whomever was "written in" into it his lifetime.

Creative or Creepy? The Michael Jackson Hologram and Humanism

Last week in Las Vegas at the Billboard Music Awards, Michael Jackson brought the live audience to its feet as he moonwalked across the stage. The problem? He’s been dead for four years. The image of Jackson dancing and singing at the awards was the result of innovative digital technology.
While the Billboard audience seemed thrilled with the King of Pop’s simulacra, fans around the world spoke out on social media to voice their disapproval, calling the projection “creepy,” “confusing and uncomfortable,” and likening Jackson’s image to “a zombie.” Others were delighted that Jackson had been resurrected from the grave. But beyond initial reactions of revulsion or excitement, some were asking questions about the ethical nature of reanimating a dead celebrity to perform in front of a live audience.
Humanism, as a philosophy concerned with the ethics of human life and our shared humanity, can inform our understanding of just what happened on that stage in Las Vegas. Initially, humanists and fans might be quite pleased with the performance. Jackson’s “hologram,” though novel, is not the first. For instance, in 2007 a “rotoscoped” image of Elvis Presley sang a duet with Celine Dion on American Idol, and in 2012 a digital recreation of Tupac Shakur rapped at the popular Coachella music festival in Indio, California. But this latest example is perhaps the most life-like audiences have seen yet.
It’s also exciting to think that celebrities may be able to “live on” after they have died. As humanists, we realize that this existence is all we have, but seeing a moving likeness of Jackson on a live stage gives fans a more vivid way to remember him. The performance, much like his recently released album of contemporized songs, could be interpreted as an homage to his legacy that also introduces him to a new generation. Esco “Jackie” Jackson, for instance, was enthusiastic about the tribute to his brother, hailing it as “incredible, amazing.”
While these are certainly valid reactions to the Billboard show, some might want to look beyond the initial performance and ask what it means when the music industry can revive a dead man to sing and dance on stage for profit. Some critics of the Billboard performance claimed that Epic Records’ use of the hologram was nothing more than crass consumerism and an exploitation of Jackson’s memory. Of course, there’s nothing new about studios using a departed singer to make a buck. Posthumous albums have been released by Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Amy Winehouse, to name a few. In many ways, presenting dead celebrities visually in front of an audience is not so different from distributing an album of unreleased tracks or re-mastered standards. Cynics might even go so far as to say that Jackson, like all too many before him, had been exploited by the music industry since his childhood, so there’s nothing surprising about his label continuing to cash in on his image. What Epic Records has done to Jackson in death is, arguably, not that different from what they were doing to him while he was alive.
Is there a difference between commodifying a celebrity in death, as opposed to in life? At least during their lifetimes, celebrities can participate in their branding and presentation. Michael Jackson in particular was known as a perfectionist when it came to his music and choreography, and no one knows how he might have felt about last Sunday’s spectacle. Epic Records CEO L. A. Reid said as much, as reported by The Huffington Post. Jermaine Jackson has been vocal about his disapproval of his brother’s second posthumous album, claiming that Jackson would have been disappointed with the songs’ lack of quality, and he expressed disappointment at the studio’s departure from Jackson’s vision just to turn a profit.
Something is lost when our society reduces a human being to a mere commodity to be bought and sold. Consumerism reduces a person’s worth to mere dollars and cents and flattens a human being into a mere object to be used and disregarded based on the whims of buyers. Humanism, however, affirms the intrinsic worth of one’s value as a human being. Each person is the awe-inspiring result of billions of years of evolution and a unique genetic makeup and cultural background, all of which contributes to an individual’s personality and talents. In the first view, Jackson’s memory is a product to be packaged only as long as someone is willing to pay for it. In the second view, Jackson was a man who, though flawed, used his talent to leave a musical legacy that forever changed popular music and brought joy to people around the world.
Was the Michael Jackson hologram a memorial of a gifted performer brought to us by the wonders of technology? Was it a dehumanizing attempt at a publicity stunt to boost album sales? Or was it a little bit of both?

Why would someone act like this?
Dear Readers,
I was thinking, AtheistNexus.org user Napoleon Bonaparte largely seems to believe that religious people are intellectually and inherently inferior in general as human beings to atheists and other non-religious individuals. I always just thought it was some form of sarcasm but as time went on, I came to think otherwise about his views. Now, I disagree with much of things that many religious people say and the manner in which they behave. However, I don't think that all religious people are intellectually inferior to atheists. Some religious people are uneducated and ignorant about subjects that they no little about or have no understanding of. We can change that with education, despite differences we may have with them. I don't feel comfortable with people like Napoleon implying that religious people are morally inferior to atheists. Sure, there are some religious people who do and say immoral things and we can certainly criticize them for that and avoid associating with such people if necessary. There are some atheists who are unintelligible and immoral people too. I'm an atheist and granted, I'm not the most educated person in the world and am certainly not a genius, I willingly admit that. Napoleon, I think really needs psychological help. He once suggested that religious people undergo forced sterilization and should be prevented from having too many children. I do agree with him that the world is overpopulated, however I am against forced sterilization. This sounds like something a Chinese Communist government official would say about families that have more than one daughter or something like that.
Coincidentally, many people often lump atheists and Communists together. Sure, many Communists are atheistic, but not all Communists are atheists. There have even been Christian Communists. Do your research. There are different types of Communism. Joseph Stalin's version of Communism was actively political, while there is also anarchistic Communism which rejects political authority and every other kind of authority while believing people should decide issues of morality with each other and not rely on any authority figure. It is not uncommon for anarchist Communists to live in communes together. I imagine that American Communists would probably be more afraid to come out of the closet today than atheists would. You know the phrase " In God We Trust" wasn't incorporated on American money until the 1950's while America was going through it's anti-Communist hysteria phase. It is true that Joseph Stalin did in fact impose atheism on the Russian people and that he sought to eliminate religious groups off of the face of the earth. He was raised Russian Orthodox, I believe. I think he was studying to become an Orthodox priest at the time he got into Communist ideology. I don't think Joseph Stalin was always an atheist, who really knows how he came to be an atheist ? I think that you can disagree with, criticize and challenge religion all you want, but to do what Stalin did isn't an option that I'm willing to support.
I think that state-imposed atheism is equally as bad as having a state-imposed religion. You know something, whenever a country imposes a certain religion on people, people tend to want nothing to do with that religion. Napoleon, he is from France just like the real Napoleon Bonaparte was. Now Napoleon the AtheistNexus.org user, he was raised religious, I'm not sure exactly what his experience was like being raised religious. I'm not sure, but I think he was raised as a Roman Catholic. I don't know why he thinks the way that he does. I had a mostly negative experience with the Jehovah's Witnesses for instance having been raised in that denomination from the time I was born, but you don't hearing say that they are inherently inferior to me. I do criticize many of their denominational beliefs and practices a lot on this particular blog and many people who read through here would notice that. I liked some of the individual JW's that I knew and still care about them as people of course. I just realized when I was growing up that I didn't fit in with them, that I disagreed with so much of that worldview and realized that when I was older that I should leave the Organization. I thought back then and still think now that it was the best choice that I could have made in regards to that particular situation. I had a mostly positive experience with the LDS Church (Orthodox Mormonism), yet I criticize many of their denominational beliefs and practices too, just like I do with the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Christian Scientists, Seventh-day Adventism, Pentecostalism or any of the other over 20 religious groups that I have been associated with.
I really wouldn't consider Napoleon to be a favorite of mine. I know it may not be nice to talk about him without him knowing it but many of the stuff that he says bothers me and I just feel that I should say something about it. Think about it.
Sincerely,
B.W.

Steve Wilkos : Woman who raised a child with a gay man-- Continued
Dear Readers,
I only caught a glimpse of the "Steve Wilkos" episode on heterosexual women who supposedly raise children with a gay man without knowing their husbands or boyfriends were gay. Steve asked the first man if he was "straight", the man said "Yes". His wife accused him of spending more time with his best friend than with her. I think it's possible that he is gay but is in denial about it, I was busy doing something else, so I wasn't paying attention. I definitely think that he might have been gay but he is likely trying to hide it. If he is gay, his "wife" needs to let him go and she needs to find herself a straight guy to marry and he should go find himself a boyfriend if you ask me because that would seem to be what they need, if they want a relationship with someone so bad. As a heterosexual woman, I'm lucky that I don't have to hide my sexuality or have to repress it because I fear how others would treat me or because some religious figure automatically accepts the views of ancient persons with a limited understanding of the world.
Later, I saw my husband watching "Hardcore Pawn" and Les the father was asking this one black woman if she was a drag queen after trying to sell him a piece of jewelry because she started acting crazy and started to pull of her clothes. She insisted that she wasn't a drag queen, she was all woman. Well, apparently this woman and Les are ignorant as to what drag queens are. Drag queens aren't the same as transgendered people. Drag queens are show people who cross dress. Their usually cisgendered and heterosexual surprisingly enough. Transgendered woman consider themselves to be "all woman". A person's gender identity is psychological, not just physical. I accept transgendered women as being all woman just as much as I consider myself to all-woman. Just because you physically look like a woman, it doesn't that you psychologically identify as a woman. Why do people have to stereotype the sexes so much? Willful or careless ignorance on subjects that you don't understand is never a good thing. Think about it.
Sincerely,
B.W.

Your hate is also a hate crime in it's own way
Dear Readers,
I remember once reading on "LGBT Weekly" which is a news website for LGBT people about a LGBT group that donated to money to repair a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses that had been burned down. I forgot the location of where it happened at though. Oddly enough, many JW's were leaving some very homophobic comments on there, some were even very preachy. What were they doing on a gay website in the first place? Their not supposed to go on websites like that. Some comments had JW's once again saying how LGBT people could only be members of the Organization (JW denomination) if they lead a life of romantic and sexual repression or gender dysphoria until death. One JW mentioned how Kingdom Halls would "never" marry same-sex couples. No, they don't have to marry same-sex couples if they don't want to, it would be nice of them if they did, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that day. Why would any same-sex couples want to marry in a bigoted fundamentalist Christian denomination anyways? Some comments were from LGBT ex-JW's who told stories of what their experiences were like with the denomination. Another JW stated that they did not ask for anyone's help to repair their Kingdom Hall. Many LGBT commenters and some straight commenters found it odd that the LGBT community would help rebuild a church that was undoubtedly homophobic, even if their intentions were good because the JW's wouldn't do the same for them. One comment by a JW that really struck me as ironic is that this person described the arson of the Kingdom Hall as a hate crime. I thought to myself " Your hatred of the LGBT community is equally as much of a crime as the destruction of your Kingdom Hall. Your just as hateful and as bigoted as the person who destroyed your house of worship, you just don't act violently about it".
It's just so sad and pitiable how the JW's can call themselves "loving" people, while constantly degrading and dehumanize the LGBT community and stick their noses in other consenting adult's private love lives. A recent example of this word be adding the word "homosexual" into their new edition of the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. The word "homosexual" did not come into existence until the 1800's. Certainly the Biblical authors were homophobic, but their views on homosexuality are wrong, just like their views on slavery are wrong and just like it is wrong to think that it is okay to kill people with curses as the Apostle Paul did and other stuff like that. The JW's are homophobic and transphobic. They are bigoted and hateful towards the LGBT community and they know they are. They just won't admit that their bigotry is actually bigotry and that their hatred is actually hatred. Most of the JW's are good people, but they hold some very wrong ideas about LGBT persons and practically everyone else on the planet if you ask me. The JW's often talk about purging their church congregations of "unclean" people, well that's not the case with pedophiles. LGBT are not "unclean" and neither are their sexual relationships with other consenting adults of the same-sex which by the way, is only the business of their participating couple. Well, even heterosexual JW's have their sex lives controlled by the Governing Body and the Elders. They can only have penile-to-vaginal sex, anything else is punishable. JW Kingdom Halls are no more "clean" than a sewer, especially when it comes to child molesters. I wouldn't be surprised if some pedophiles only convert into the JW's because they may be familiar with the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society's lax ways of punishing child molesters. It's too easy for them to hurt kids in Kingdom Halls. Ask Candace Conti.
Not to mention the treatment that JW's show to non-JW's and ex-JW's. The JW's say they are in the world, but not of the world but if you were to treat them like societal rejects or outcasts, they would immediately complain about how "persecuted" they are. Well, it's apparently okay for them to do that to non-JW's, ex-JW's, LGBT people and doubting JW's because they happen to think that they have the "truth" and that this is what Yahweh wants them to do. No, it doesn't work like that. You don't get to place double-standards on other people and act like hypocrites without getting called out on it and having to face some criticism first. I'm glad that I never believed much of the JW worldview growing up or else I might have went crazy. That way of life may work for some people, but it certainly doesn't and won't work for everyone. Even if your a JW, you have to acknowledge that your way of life isn't and doesn't work for everyone. Well, I just hope more LGBT JW's will be able to accept themselves for who they are and live their lives the way that they want and not have to have some religious authority always trying to tell them what to do or how to think. Think about it.
Sincerely,
B.W.
Steve Wilkos preview on women who raised kids unkowingly with gay men
Dear Readers,
My husband was watching "Steve Wilkos" and I saw a preview of an episode on women who raised children with a gay man. It featured one black woman who said everyone she knows suspected her husband was gay, especially because he wore some yellow pants-type of outfit. Well, just because a man wears "feminine" clothing, that doesn't necessarily mean he is gay. She also found an audio clip of her husband having sex with one of his male friends. Another man insisted that he is "straight" despite practically admitting on his phone that he is gay and the preview then told that man to come out, basically to tell the truth. Now, I will say this-- I really see mixed-orientation "marriages" and "relationships" as destructive. It largely hurts both the heterosexual and homosexual person as well as any children they may have together. Have you ever seen Ang Lee's acclaimed 2005 blockbuster film "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN" with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal? It seems that black men on the down-low have seriously issues to me. The homophobia and transphobia of the black community really ticks me off and I'm a black heterosexual woman myself. I'm also mad about the misogyny shown towards women and the prejudices surrounding interracial relationships that still exist in communities of color. Much of the prejudice towards LGBT people in the black community is due to organized religion and stereotypical notions of masculinity. What does Steve Wilkos think when it comes to black gay men hiding their sexuality? I don't think Steve is homophobic, but I don't know how well he understands LGBT issues.
Black gay men in mixed-orientation marriages have to worry about loosing their relationship with their children, if they have one and are scared of facing rejection from their loved ones just like white gay men or other gay men of color, or lesbian or bisexual persons. Heterosexuals don't have to face rejection for who they love and for how they choose to express their sexuality in private. I am a heterosexual married woman and I can appreciate how lucky I am to not have to go through that. I hope that more LGBT people will find the courage to leave mixed-orientation marriages and relationships and still be able to maintain a relationship with their children,if they have kids and have a close relationship with their kids. How would it be fair to lie to your child about what gender you are really in love with.? How is fair to be in a relationship with someone is not in love with you, never can be in love with you and never will be in love with you? If my husband were gay, I'd want him to tell me. I'd be more mad about the fact that he lied to me about his sexuality. If I found myself in that situation, I'd end the relationship if that were the case because I would want to be with a man who is heterosexual and I'd want him to go out and find himself a boyfriend or husband. If we had kids, I certainly let him maintain his status as a father to the kids. My husband and I never had children, but if we did and he was a closeted gay man, I would want him to go his own way, I would later explain to the kids at a certain age that their dad was gay and why he probably tried to hide his true sexuality.
A gay man can never love a heterosexual woman in the way that she would want him to. A lesbian can never love a heterosexual man in the way that he wants her to. A gay person can love a heterosexual person as a person, but their not "in love" with them. A straight woman can love a lesbian woman as a person, but not as a spouse or a lover. A straight man could love a gay man as a person, but he could never be "in love" with him, the feelings just don't exist in such a scenario. Let's say for instance, just because a straight guy has sex with a gay man just out of curiosity or for fun, that doesn't make the straight guy a homosexual. The sex may be feel great, but at the same time, the sex isn't going to be as incredible for the straight guy as it would be if he were with screwing a woman. He can love the gay guy as a person, he may think that the gay guy is very good at making love but at the end of the day, the straight guy would rather have the companionship of a woman and would rather being having a sexual relationship with a woman. He isn't in love with the gay guy, it just isn't possible.
Again, in this world, especially in America it is very disturbing that we have such a deep hatred and fear of romance and sexual lovemaking, especially of that between persons of the same-sex. Humans, including Americans, we love to have sex, but we cannot have productive conversations about sexuality, how nuts is that? We have a lot of growing up to do. Think about it.
Sincerely,
B.W.

Slipknot performing in 2005
Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) is the third studio album by American metal band Slipknot (pictured). The album was released on May 25, 2004, through Roadrunner Records. It is the band's only album produced by Rick Rubin and also the only one not to feature profanity. Following the band's tour to promote its second album in 2002, speculation regarding the future began. Some band members had already been involved in side projects including Murderdolls, To My Surprise, and the reformation of Stone Sour. In 2003, Slipknot moved into The Mansion to work on the album. Initially, the band was unproductive; lead vocalist Corey Taylor was drinking heavily. Nevertheless, they wrote more than enough material for a new album—the band's first to incorporate more traditional, melodic song structures, guitar solos and acoustic guitars. The album received generally positive reviews; Q called it "a triumph". The album peaked within the top ten in album sales across eleven countries, and went platinum in the United States. The band also received the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the song "Before I Forget". (Full article...)
