Welcome!
.

Racism and the effects of ethnocentrism are alive and well in the 21st century.  Racism and humanism are incompatible by definition.
 File:BlueMarble-2001-2002.jpg

The most human, and humane, thing that we can do is acknowledge and support the humanity of people who are different from ourselves.  Curiosity about what makes us human, by necessity, includes curiosity about our human ethnic heritage.

We are incredibly enriched by immersing ourselves in a diverse world.  We are intellectually and emotionally impoverished when we exclude others who are not our mirror image.

This discussion group includes many topics about race and ethnicity.  Feel free to comment to new threads, or resurrect old threads, if any spark your interest.

My 2 cents. Daniel W.

Erasing Hate.  Huff Post.  Former neonazi skinhead white supremist.   The documentary airs Sunday, June 26th, at 9 P.M.  From the clips, this guy was a very scary man from sad beginnings.  Apparentely he turned around and ultimately reached out to his direct opposite, anti-racist individuals and the Southern Povery Law Center.  I don't know if I will get to watch it - my TV time is very limited.

For Thomas, I couldn't find much about Juneteenth observance in DC - here is what little I did locate.  There seems to be a lot of "Rev." in that, but it's not too surprising.

It is good to see the recognition  of jueententh on this board, the unfortunate fact is that the lingering "ambivalence"  of this society towards the Blacks is still a factor.

Murder conviction overturned due to prosecutor's appeal to racism.
Seattle Times.
During the trial, Konat questioned witnesses, many of them black, about a purported street "code" that he claimed prevented some from talking to the police, according to the Supreme Court's majority opinion written by Justice Tom Chambers. In questioning some witnesses, Konat made references to the "PO-leese," the justices found.
During his closing argument to jurors, Konat also said that while witnesses denied the presence of such a code, "the code is black folk don't testify against black folk. You don't snitch to the police," according to the Supreme Court decision.

...the Supreme Court, in Thursday's ruling, cited Konat's comments as grounds for the conviction to be overturned, saying that they cast doubt on the credibility of the witnesses based on their race. One justice called the deputy prosecutor's comments "repugnant."

Who feels discriminated against at work.
Blacks 25%
Disabled 22%
Hispanic 21%
Women 19%
LGBT 18%
"Nondiverse" 14%
Asian 11%

CareerBuilder questioned more than 1,300 workers from six diverse backgrounds.  I guess "nondiverse" means nondisabled straight nonhispanic white males.  Subjective survey of course.
