Carl, thank you so much for posting some positive uplifting stories!
Here is one more - in Uganda, which is a profoundly homophobic country, these courageous people had their celebration anyway.  They had to be careful, but it was outdoors and open.  In addition, a Uganda presidential candidate has spoken out against homophobia.

Hey, folks, here's an article profiling several trans youth.  Each profile has an accompanying video.
Watch these videos!!  These kids are awesome!!
I'd have to say the same thing about their parents, as well.

Trans Teens Are Sharing Their Inspiring Personal Stories In Hopes O...

This is part of a media campaign from the Transgender Law Center.
I'm very happy with the progress gays and lesbians have achieved but, sadly, our trans brothers and sisters have been left behind.  Too often they are left out of the LGBTQI conversation.  We need to support and defend them much more than we have.

Thanks Joan and Cat. Yes, the Episcopalians also had the good sense to dump the Pope!

Congratulations to you and your husband, Bertold!
(And if you do go to confession, you can tell the priest they'll have to adapt to reality. :-) I know a gay man who "fired" the Catholic Church for considering him "intrinsically disordered"; he's still a theist, but happily Episcopalian -- as Robin Williams put it, "all of the pageantry, none of the guilt.")

Bertold, Congratulations! You are part of the new changes and a tribute to you both. My best wishes for a healthy, strong, happy 35 more years.

Thanks so much for all the good wishes guys! It's a bit of an anti-climax at this point. Deciding if I should wear shorts or jeans. I'll have to go to confession first, of course.

"Like the Holocaust," eh?  Ummm, Bryan?  Who's being killed?!?
.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on Thursday
From JT Eberhard's Patheos column:

Bryan Fischer: Signing same-sex marriage licenses is like the Holocaust

Bryan Fischer, who runs a radio show for the American Family Association, has compared allowing families to legally form (which you’d think a “family” organization would be all about) to the mass murder of an entire class of people based solely on their inherent properties (like race or sexual orientation).

Yes, Kim Davis isn’t just denying a service to gay couples to which they’re legally entitled because she, herself, feels entitled to do so. No, no – she’s taking a bold stand against the Nazis, kind of like a moo moo-wearing Indiana Jones. Because declaring your life-long love for a person is kind of like murdering millions, right?

If you can’t tell the difference between genocide and love then you lose the right to tell anybody that your religion is good for the world. Hell, just look at what it’s done to you.

So it's official (and officious!): the Republican Party wants to be BIGOTED as a matter of public policy ... and yeah, that's the way I'd put it.  That shouldn't be sugar-coated or soft-pedaled in any fashion.  Indeed, that's the mildest way I'd put it.

According to ThinkProgress,
Republican National Committee Endorses Anti-Gay Discrimination
Not exactly a big surprise.

The RNC wants Congress to approve the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA). This bill, which the ACLU has called “a Pandora’s Box of taxpayer-funded discrimination against same-sex couples and their children,” would prevent the federal government from acting against businesses and non-profits that discriminate against same-sex married couples. This would mean that government workers could refuse to perform their duties, and businesses and organizations — including those that operate with support of taxpayer money — would be free to discriminate.

Hilarious, if weird, video. I have zero sympathy for the bigoted bakers.
I do sometimes wonder about priorities. In a world where black men are being shot by cops playing out their lethal prejudices, regularly, I think we need to concentrate more on other social justice issues. Not that we can't have both cakes and social justice, but... priorities.
Still the video is a lot of fun.

I would think that disqualification for a given situation under the stipulated circumstances would NOT look especially good on a justice's resume.  Exactly what the review process for Ohio justices is (presuming there is any), I don't know, but flense scar tissue enough times and the patient won't like it much!

Glad to see that ruling by the Ohio Sup. Ct. Only thing is, I don't think they go far enough. If a judge is going to decline to perform one of the duties of the office based on his/her religious beliefs, then that person no longer needs to be a judge. Bias and prejudice have no place in the judiciary. Too bad Scalia and Thomas don't understand that.

Pat, I hadn't previously encountered the lovely and insightful Website you linked. Thanks for making my day!
Kim, once she's established as a media sensation (and she has every bit as much charisma as Mary Lou Retton) could start a side business with Sarah Palin. They could establish a high end (so to speak) colonic spa in D.C. for constipated Republicans.)
.

Bertold, you make a great point. A franchise on Fox News? TBN? Daily Stormer? Breitbart? NewsMax (When news breaks we fix it, and ohhhhhh, do we fix it!). I see shekels in her future from the bigoted Trump supporters.
.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on Thursday
KY update - NPR just noted that the County Clerk proposed a compromise by which Kim would be excused from issuing licenses herself if she would promise not to interfere with her clerks. She refused. Most likely at this point she's seeing dollar signs beckoning as much as the gates of heaven.
.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on Thursday
This should be such a simple and straightforward case, and it could be easily settled, no fuss, no bother. Kim is asking for a special right, not to perform part of her job responsibilities. So, all she needs to do is show incontrovertible proof of her claim, that signing her name to a marriage license for a same-sex couple will directly result in her spending an eternity in hell. If this is true, I'm for her, her request is reasonable. Without that proof? Why are we even wasting money on legal proceedings?
.

Comment by Ruth Anthony-Gardner on Thursday
LOL, Bertold. That sounds like a good idea.
Good point about bible injunctions and selective behavior, Daniel.
.
Comment by Daniel W on Thursday
I am pretty sure there is nothing in the bible saying that Jesus requires Kim Davis to be the county clerk in Kentucky.

There are some things saying that Kim Davis' serial marriages are adulterous, and that she should be stoned for that. Unclear what kind of stones, but either granite or flint will usually suffice.
How many divorced persons has she refused to allow go remarry?
.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on Thursday
Impeachment is probably not terribly likely in KY. How about if instead they sentence her to keep this billboard in her front yard?

Best news I've heard in a while, Pat.  It'd be nice if this incident were a wake-up call for those who think they can bring their religion to work with them and shove it down the throats of those they work with or for, but with the Hobby Lobby decision as backdrop, I'm still not certain.
The way I've heard it to this point, to actually REMOVE her from her job, she needs to be impeached.  Now here's the $64 question: will that actually HAPPEN???
.

 Comment by Pat on Thursday
Breaking News! The Kentucky Kristian Klerk who won't follow the law has been found to be in contempt of Court and jailed. Actually, she got what she wanted. Which, IMHO, was attention paid to her. And the Konservative Kristian Klowns were all too eager to make her the poster child for their cause. What I do wonder, however, is this. When the dust settles, and it turns out she has to pay the other side's attorneys fees and costs, is the American Family Council, Tony Perkins, the Liberty Council, or any other right wing group going to step up to the plate and help her financially? Yeah. Didn't think so.
.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on Thursday
Actually both the LGBT community and the atheist community owe Fischer and his ilk a great debt of thanks for making crystal clear to all those millennials listening and watching out there that literalist religion truly is an insane source of bigotry and hatred just as it appears to the even slightly discerning eye.

Most of the time I agree with you on most things. However, I don't see why she should get special treatment on this point. Most employers would have no problem forcing their subordinates to perform tasks that will result in those employees spending an eternity in hell.  In fact, their performance appraisals probably get extra points for such.

There may be an out for her.  If she can get her doctor to sign an FMLA form (family medical leave act), stating that she has a dermatologic condition that will be exacerbated by hellfire and brimstone exposure, she might be able to get a light duty excuse, say, spend eternity in hell, but no more than 4 consecutive hours per shift.  Or, if she could be diagnosed with Hellfire and Brimstone Sensitivity Syndrome, she might get Social Security disability and avoid the whole issue.

Charlie Pierce had a typically sharp take on the whole thing:

Dear Judge Bunning: Thanks for nothing.
Let me explain to you what happens now. The entire political communications apparatus of the wingnut welfare system goes to DefCon 1. (Judge Bunning's e-mail is going to get very entertainingly unchristian, I suspect.) Kim Davis now becomes the latest ornament on the Hang Yourself Cross of Bible-banging victimhood. There will be marches and vigils. There will be a six-figure book deal; my money's on John Fund as Davis's ghost. There may even be one of those movies produced by gullibility trawlers like the one helmed by Rick Santorum. Anybody want to bet me that she doesn't speak at next year's Republican National Convention? You have made a star, Judge Bunning, and the rest of us have to live with her.

Bertold, you're welcome as to the link. I would add that Daily Stormer has endorsed Trump for President. Just sayin'.
As to a Davis/Palin colonic spa. I live at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. There ain't enough water to flush that away!
