Did Moses actually abandon his donkey and walk 40 miles in the desert?

My grandfather read a lot of the Bible. He was amazed that Moses tied his ass to a tree and then walked for 40 miles. They did strange things in those days.  :)

What proof did Dennis Michael Pennington's non-practicing JW grandfather have for the existence of Moses or that Moses tied his donkey to a tree and walked 40 miles?  How do you know if the Biblical authors actually believed that Moses existed or that he actually walked 40 miles in the desert?  Can you be sure that the Biblical authors believed that they were describing an actual event that revolved around a real person?  If the Biblical authors did believe that this story was an actual event or that Moses was a real person, what proof did they have during their lifetimes of Moses having been a real person who traveled 40 miles in the desert and was chosen by Yahweh to lead the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt?
