It is interesting to me that Christians have a much higher divorce rate than non-religious people. Are you engaging in "adultery" if you remarry? The Roman Catholics and the Jehovah's Witnesses are against the idea of getting married more than once to a different person. I don't think that fundamentalist Christian groups do a good job at handing spousal abuse, child abuse, rape, cases of adultery where the husband goes without punishment, while wife may face a religious form of probation or expulsion from her religious community or cases of child molestation. They seem to be willing to at least tolerate such behaviors without taking any real serious action towards such immoral acts. They are more worried about what consenting same-sex couples and unmarried heterosexual adult couples are doing. I think its terrible that LGBT people undergo a life of repression in order to please a demanding religious community that would immediately ostracize them if they refused to live their life that way.
Unmarried heterosexual couples, many of them, I think could care less what religious groups think of their behavior unless they buy into the idea that non-marital sex is "sinful" and "immoral". I haven't seen any evidence that non-marital sex is "damaging". Promiscuity may be though. Religious groups do try to control the sexual lives of adults and to such an unhealthy degree. Is it any wonder why so many people have spousal problems or why so many teenage girls end up getting pregnant?
