What a pile of shit! Opus is first, and foremost, tied to the music world. If they'd bother to look in a dictionary, they'd see that it's tied to musical compositions or a set of them, numbered chronologically. Fucking religionists!!!

As Tommy points out, opus is simply the Latin noun for "work", though in a particular rather than a general sense -- "a work" or "the work", vs, for instance, "hard work" or "the work So-and-So does for a living".
It is indeed chiefly familiar today as a technical term in music, the Opus 132 (or Op. 132) of a particular composer being his 132nd published work. But note the numbering goes by order of publication: Beethoven's Opus 132, for instance, was actually composed ( and performed, IIRC) before his Opera 130 and131. If a work was not published during the composer's lifetime it does not have an opus number.
But this is a rather recent usage, dating only from the early 18th century and not coming into general use until its end. (Mozart, for instance, didn't use it.)
As a building term (as in opus reticulatum, opus sectile, opus testaceum etc**) it well antedates Christianity, let alone the foundation of the Catholic organisation known informally as Opus Dei (The Work of God) in 1928. Opus Dei can hardly claim proprietorial rights over the word.
** For illustrations of these terms see here: http://www.romanaqueducts.info... and here: http://www.ostia-antica.org/di...

"Magnum opus", as in the "greatest work" of an artist, writer, or (less commonly) a politician has been in use since about 1790; and as a word in music since the mid 18th century. Opus Dei was very late to the party; it was not founded until 1928.

This strikes me as being like the hoohaw surrounding the use of the word "Olympics." It's fine for everybody and their brothercousindaddy to use it as long as the filthy queerz can't get their hands on the word and sully it for everybody else.
Maybe this will be NOM's next move. Declare they've copyrighted "marriage" so the filthy queerz cannot be allowed to use it.

Whether as the nominative plural or as the genitive singular of Deus, it has two syllables, both pronounced -- dey-ee, the first being the longer.

Opus is both a penguin and musical nomenclature designating the order in which certain classical music compositions were created/published (Symphony Number 2 in F#, Opus 57). Oh, and Opus One wine, the Mondavi/Rothschild wine label and the jazz standard Opus Number One by Duke Ellington.
The Opus Group is a large commercial real estate company, the Opus Bank is a commercial bank headquartered in Washington state, Opus Way is a street in Bethlehem, PA, and OpusWay is an. offshore IT Development company. Oh, and Opus Day is a day spa in Loretta, Manitoba, Canada
Opus Dei hasn't sued a single one of them for using the word Opus, not even the homophonic (shocking!) Opus Day.
So it's only the "gay" that bothers/them/worries them/spurs them to actions, and that in no way supports their case of brand name confusion.

CHILE: Opus Dei Sues LGBT Group For Ownership Of "Opus Gay" Web Domain

The secretive Catholic group Opus Dei has filed a lawsuit against a Chilean LGBT group whose name translates as the Movement For Homosexual Integration & Liberation (MOVILH). The suit seeks control of the OpusGay.cl web domain and claims that the words "Opus Gay" create confusion in the public's mind and suggest that MOVILH's mission is supported by the Catholic Church. The domain was registered in 2002 and the URL redirects to the group's digital magazine. The suit further claims that the word "Opus" is "inextricably linked to the prelature." The lawyer for MOVILH notes that other sites begin with the word "Opus" and accuses Opus Dei of "irrational homophobia." At the time of the domain's registration Opus Dei filed an objection against the use of  "Opus Gay" as the title of a Chilean print magazine. That demand was granted in 2007.

This idiot is getting way more attention than he deserves. I wouldn't go near him even though he is gay. He's too psychologically broken, and on some deep level, I think he knows that.

My personal opinion is that you're probably quite right about being emotionally/psychologically broken, although I'm not sure he has the understanding of exactly how and why. He probably just knows that he's getting attention so for the moment, the rest of it can be ignored.

In a way, this is a "bless his heart" moment in Southernese, and not in the "fuck him" way ("bless your/his/her heart" can be context-specific). It's more in the sense of, well, pity, because he's got problems for which he really needs to see a legit, non-churchy therapist who's a member of the American Psychological Association.
That being said, he really needs to step away from the spotlight and go work on himself.
EDITED TO ADD: Also, TV producers need to stop rewarding his behavior by giving him attention like this. It incentivizes him to not get help.

personally, I just don't understand the audience laughter. I would hope it is because they are laughing at him for his stupidity, but I honestly am hesitant to give that much credit to any tv show audience.
If they are laughing at his speech and mannerisms, along with his so unbelievable claim to be suddenly straight, then isn't that a bit insulting to effeminate gays? I'm one of the gays no one guesses about until I tell them, but it seems to me that some of our more effeminate members might also be victimized by that same sort of ridicule.
for full disclosure I make fun of Marcus Bachmann, but he just puts the target on himself....along with his lipstick and knee pads. this clown just seems like a dufus out for 15 minutes of fame and a payday.

No dear. There have been discussions centered around the possibility of detaching Canada by...hmm...a half-mile from the continental U.S. -- thereby creating a northern water paradise for us Americans.
Just think of all the "Sandals Resorts" that could be built along that shoreline!

I know my American tourists, hon.
You take your typical elderly Jewish couple -- say, Celia age 79 and Sam age 84 -- put them on a nice cruise boat complete with brie and crackers and a nice wine, and explain to them how this body of water used to be occupied by a nice people who agreed that wouldn't it be a lovely gesture if they, the Canadians, moved farther north and freed up a new waterway for their American cousins.
I have it all planned in my head.
After this, I'm creating a new religion.

Jimmy Kimmel Interviews "I'm Not Gay No More" Guy About Yogurt Store Fracas

Via the St. Louis Fox affiliate:
“It’s a good thing you didn’t order hot fudge, huh? That could’ve been really bad,” host Jimmy Kimmel said. “Right, my skin would’ve been burnt,” Caldwell said. The cashier, Stephanie Diaz, was charged with third-degree assault. Diaz denies calling Caldwell a homosexual slur, adding that she is gay. Kimmel said his show contacted her to appear on the program, but her lawyers declined. “Will you be writing a negative Yelp review of the store?” Kimmel said. “Yes, I will,” Caldwell said, adding that he plans to sue the FroYo store. When asked how much he thinks he should get for his troubles, Caldwell plainly responded, “a couple million.” “That’s a lot of toppings,” Kimmel quipped.

Jimmy Kimmel Interviews "I'm Not Gay No More" Guy About Yogurt Store Fracas

I'm in the same boat - he looks way older than me. Either it ages one badly or is a root cause of corpulence as is evidenced with the current fundies.

I think "Pastor Rick" (really? I'm sometime loud and insensate, can I be a pastor, too?!) would gladly reciprocate. And _that_, my dears, is where they say it all comes from. 80% of homophobes are...what now?
(Also, though: Damn; I've been banned from bars before [oh, it was temporary and in my youth], but a whole city? That's a type of "irritant" about which the poetess would have said, "Much like the empire state building, you have to admire it for its size...." (And that's not a compliment, btw.)

Here Is Todays SCOTUS Protester

Today's Supreme Court hearing was momentarily disrupted by a man in the gallery who repeatedly screamed "homosexuality is an abomination" before being carted out by federal police. It turns out that the man is a well-known crackpot named Rives Miller Grogan, seen above in October 2011 when he ran on the field during a National League playoff game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants.
In 2012 Grogan was arrested by DC police after he climbed a tree during Obama's second inauguration to scream anti-Obama slogans. Grogan has disrupted many events around the nation and has been ejected from the US House and Senate galleries for screaming. In 2013 a DC district judge permanently banned Grogan from the city, spawning a freedom of speech debate.
“Banning him from the District because he’s sitting in a tree or speaking out, I think is absurd,” said John Whitehead, president of the Rutherford Institute, a civil-liberties group that is taking up Grogan’s case. “He’s strange, but do you know how many strange people enter D.C. every day who probably shouldn’t be here?” Magistrate Judge Karen Howze signed the order Tuesday, telling Grogan to stay out of the city until a hearing Feb. 25. The order is more sweeping than what prosecutors had sought. The U.S. Attorney’s Office had asked that Grogan be banned from the Capitol grounds, House and Senate office buildings, the Library of Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court. But Howze broadened the request as a condition of releasing Grogan from jail until his trial.
Grogan, 47, who calls himself “Pastor Rick” and runs a ministry and boardinghouse in Los Angeles, admits he’s an irritant, racking up about 10 arrests and a half-dozen convictions in two years in House and Senate buildings alone. He said he patiently waits for the proceedings to be recessed before he stands and shouts, most recently in the Senate gallery when he screamed that legal abortions caused the massacre in Newtown, Conn. “I preach, and I preach loudly on Capitol Hill,” said Grogan, who said he’s never spent more than a few days in jail. He’s been thrown out of a presidential debate, a Major League Baseball game attended by Mitt Romney, and too many buildings to count.
Maybe now the Supreme Court will uphold that ban from DC.
