MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR: What’s Your Favorite AHA Conference Memory?
Posted January 15, 2014
Registration is now open for the 73rd Annual Conference of the American Humanist Association! Travel to Philadelphia June 5-8, 2014, and get the opportunity to meet a stellar list of humanist awardees and speakers, including former Rep. Barney Frank, New York Times writer Natalie Angier, science education advocate Eugenie Scott, feminist blogger Jessica Valenti, Pippa Evans and Sanderson Jones of The Sunday Assembly—and more to be announced!
Can you believe the American Humanist Association has held conferences for 73 years? My absolute favorite AHA conference memory is sitting down with 2010 Humanist of the Year Bill Nye having a drink at the hotel bar (he ordered Fat Tire) and watching him explain slide rules to me using his iPhone. I watched nearly every episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy as a kid, so getting a chance to hang out with one of my idols was a dream.
Do you have a memorable moment from a past AHA conference? Maybe it was sitting across from Kurt Vonnegut when he received the Humanist of the Year award in 1992, or getting Steve Wozniak, Apple founder and 2011 Isaac Asimov Science Awardee, to sign your iPad. Share with us your favorite AHA conference memories at hnn@americanhumanist.org.
