Little Lost Angel by Michael Quinlan amazon.com revoews

In this riveting true story of teenage obsession, torture, and murder, Quinlan, a staff member of the Louisville Courier-Journal--and the only journalist to interview all the parties involved--recounts the horrific events surrounding the murder of 12-year-old Shandra Sharer by a group of teenaged girls.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
It's always unnerving to read about young teenagers killing (in this case) a 12-year-old, but what's striking about this story is how little time it took for the relationships to escalate into violence. Shanda Sharer started at a new school in the fall of 1991, and she was murdered on January 11, 1992. Another feature of interest is the synergism between two personalities involved in the murder: one who had the passion to hate the victim, and the other who had the absence of feeling to be able to kill without remorse. Michael Quinlan has an engaging, suspenseful style and brings out some important issues surrounding increased violence among teenagers. The book is somewhat marred, though, by his limited knowledge of psychiatry, and by his occasional irrelevant remarks about normal teen fascinations (rock music, occult literature).
For another viewpoint on this same crime, see Cruel Sacrifice by Aphrodite Jones. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
Book is ok as far as true crime goes, but when the author talks about the gay angle it's always that Shanda was forced into it, talked into it and completely at a loss. No comment in that the parents interrogated her for an hour in trying to get her to admit to lesbian activity, and the author takes great pains to say that Shanda was not a lesbian unlike the fighting coke snorting bunch that killed her. She was just experimenting.
The author also misses out on Amanda who is the only interesting character in the book. He pretty much dismisses her as a dyke and doesn't mind the fact that parents shun her for that reason.

Ok if you like books about white trash girls going dyke and getting killed but skip the moralizing please!

I know what you mean. Amanda is a facebook friend of mine and she has such a huge, kind heart. She is a wonderful woman and I didn't like the way either this author or Aphrodite Jones addressed her.

What a joke. Amanda Heavrin is nothing but a troublemaker. She ACTED like she was the victim when she made some comments to Jacque and Paige on Dr. Phil! :( She doesn't have a heart at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars  I know Laurie Tackett, April 23, 2002

By
Emily Shepard (Brookville In) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I do feel very deeply for the parents of Shanda but I must also say that I spent 9months at Rockville Correctional with Laurie Tackett and that she is not the monster that everyone portrays her to be. She is not someone who is not remorseful for what happened. She is a very loving and caring person. She truly is sympathetic over the whole ordeal. She lives with this everyday and every night. Let me say that I do not condone what happened but let me also say that I believe that Melinda is a horrible person and that the other girls fell under her spell. They where all young. It was very wrong but I must defend Laurie because she does feel pain. She is in know way a monster!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars  the murderers now, November 6, 2001

By
debbie trueblood (indiana) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I was an inmate in the Indiana prison with these girls. i only got to know Melinda Loveless and Toni Lawerence. These girls are not the cold blooded killers as they were portrayed. I do not condone the taking of a life but my opinion is that they were young and got caught up too far in something too deep. we all make mistakes when we're young some bigger than others.Lay off ! they are being punished let them do their time and go on to try to live normal productive lives. They are both intelligent college students and someday will make something of themselves if given the chance. Clean your own garbage before judging someone elses !!!!

Are you kidding???? What DO you call someone who does those things to a 12 YEAR OLD??? How DARE you defend POOR Laurie? I'm glad she lives with this everyday! Oh,And she's "sympathetic"? WHAT??? I think you mean "pathetic", how can she sympathize with what Shanda's family lost? I think all 4 girls were sick, selfish monsters,,,,How can you say Melinda put these girls "under her spell"? Give me a break. You won't find many supporters,,,,why don't you take a good look at those autopsy photos, and then see how sorry you feel for that murderess??

Poster says, "If she was truly sorry she would douse herself with gasoline and then light herself on fire."
Tackett is in prison. I don't think she can do that in a controlled prison setting.
LOL
However, Rippey is out. She can always give it a try.
Huh...I just read the following:
"Tackett told Ryder that the shame of her crime defined her until she tried unsuccessfully to take her own life in the fall of 2004. It was then she claims that she felt God's love in her heart. 'I took God's hand...I've never felt that before in my life.'"
http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/notorious_murders/young/shanda_sharer/11.html
So if this is true (the suicide attempt), then perhaps Laurie Tackett does feel great shame and remorse. That combined with the fact that she is the *only* one of the four murderers who has never attempted an early release or an appeal of her 60-year sentence is compelling information indeed.

You may have gotten to know young women/girls who *appeared* not to be cold-blooded killers within the prison setting, but I bet if you had seen them that night, you'd have a different opinion.
P. S. You describe Loveless and Lawrence as "intelligent college students," but an appeals attorney for Loveless described his own client as "profoundly retarded."
"Indianapolis attorney Mark Small, who is representing Loveless, said in a telephone interview that severe childhood abuse made his client 'profoundly retarded.'"

Brian says:
"Clean your own garbage before judging someone elses!" Well... I'm sure the people reading this book have never assaulted, raped, tortured and killed anyone. What these girls did far exceeds the normal skeletons in the closet and I don't expect an inmate to be a good judge of character. I mean come on! Debbie was in there with that scum for a reason.

This was a very sad story. Hard to believe there are people in the world such as this. I enjoyed the writing and would read another by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars  Shocking..., October 26, 2003
By A Customer

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I can't stand the fact that somebody would actually do something so horrible to someone else! If only somebody had seen the girls at the castle, heard Shanda screaming, or SOMETHING, she would have been saved. I'm so sorry for Shanda and her family... I hope they somehow learn to live with it, but I know it's hard to lose somebody you love...especially when something like this happens to them. Melinda, Laurie, Hope, and Toni all deserved their sentences, and ESPECIALLY Melinda and Laurie...and of the two, MELINDA ESPECIALLY DESERVES IT!!!!!! However much she wanted her precious little girlfriend back or however jealous she was, this does NOT, and I mean does NOT excuse her behavior. She deserves much harsher punishment, MUCH harsher! Do to her what she did to Shanda! And I don't care how rough these girls' lives were before or how "sorry" they said they were, they deserve their punishment! Toni, however "sorry" or "innocent" she seems, did NOTHING to help Shanda! I side with Shanda and her family. Melinda...BURN IN HELL!!!!!! Sorry for all this passion, but it enrages me that someone would be so inhumane to a sweet, caring little girl, and especially one with such a bright future ahead of her. Rest in peace, Shanda, I wish you and your family well. This book is horrifying, not one you should read before bed...come to think of it, read or watch something happy and upbeat after reading this. Other than that, I highly recommend this book. Shanda has finally found peace...may she never again be harmed...

4.0 out of 5 stars  Remember Shanda, August 19, 2002

By
Marcello (Orlando, FL USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
This book infuriated me! Melinda Loveless, Laurie Tackett,Toni Lawerence, and Hope(whatever the name is) were four ..., cowardly ... that decided to gang up on one innocent, beautiful girl - Shanda Sharer. This book is just another sad reminder of how corrupt this world really is. I believe in an "eye for an eye." If I had my way, the four of them would experience death in the same way Shanda did. Instead they were given life in prison (some less) with college courses & access to the web! This disgusts me! Shanda will never have a chance at life... much less a college degree! I don't care how young these murderers were at the time or how "sympathetic" they conveniently feel now- nothing & I mean nothing excuses their actions. And if you are one of the prison inmates who happened to know these animals, and believe that their not "cold blooded killers" then you really are stupid. Imagine if you had been the target of these monsters' atrocities? All in all, if you want to read a book that will make your blood boil, then read this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars  Meet the real Shanda Sharer, July 22, 2002
By A Customer

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
This book focuses more on Shanda than on her murderers, which makes it a great complement to Jone's "Cruel Sacrifice". Jones barely talked about the victim in her book, while this one deals mainly if not only with Shanda. It includes photos of her growing up (all the photos Jones could find were an old yearbook one and autopsy shots..)
I'd give it 5 Stars if it weren't so poorly written and the constant homophobic tone really annoyed me.

Shanda wasn't exactly an angel.. she was a very precocious 12 year old who made a mistake, but she surely didnt deserve to be tortured and burned alive for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars  Places the blame right where it belongs, February 11, 2002

By
bookworm (Baton Rouge, LA United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
"Little Lost Angel" is a horrifying account of what was done to poor little Shanda Sharer. There is no defense for what those four spoiled, selfish, teenagers did to her, and this book doesn't try to make you feel sorry for them. A much better choice than Aphrodite Jones' "Cruel Sacrifice", which clearly wants your sympathy to lie with these brutal murderers, rather than with the twelve year old victim. "Little Lost Angel" acknowleges that, yes, these girls had trauma in their lives, but doesn't attempt to absolve them of responsiblity for their actions. And it clearly indicates that the real victim was a helpless little girl who stepped out of her house to talk to someone and was subjected to hours of torture and abuse before being burned alive by four people, three of whom didn't even know her and just thought it would be cool to go along for the ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars  A Heartbreaking Story, September 12, 2000

By
Taryn Murphy (Deep River, CT United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
This is the most tragic and gruesome story about teens I have ever read in my life. I couldn't believe these girls were capable of murder, young as they were. It is a real tear-jerker, and whoever reads it should be prepared to cry A LOT. As sad as it is, however, it should be read by the entire world just to know how Shanda's life was ended so abruptly, when she had an intelligent future in her hands.

4.0 out of 5 stars  How I loved and hated the book, August 3, 2000

By
sugarHon (Singapore) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I just finished reading this truly shocking book a few moments ago and I cannot stop thinking about it. I'm 13 this year 2000. When Shanda was murdered, i was a mere 5 years old. The thought that she could be a 20-year-old young and fine lady at this point in time saddens me. I cannot believe it. The story itself was written in such a way I couldn't put it down. I finished the whole book in 25 hours, stopping to sleep and go to school. I absolutely loved the book. BUT THEN... last night when i was 3/4 through the book, I couldn't get to sleep, the murder was so gruesome I kept thinking about it. I couldn't stand those shadows in my bedroom wall, knowing I might not be so safe after all... nevertheless, read it if you feel you are mature enough to gulp such horrible facts easily.

I hope your sister gets ganged bang by AIDS infected men and then burned little by little in her genitals,
she is an evil bitch and deserves to suffer 100 times more than Shandra, she was 12 years old!! I have a 12 year old and what she did was inhumane, she has no goodness in her body, and it deserves to be totured.. Pass that on to her ok.. Moron, I'd be ashamed to call her my sister...

Kelly says:
All while having Windex sprayed in her wounds. "You don't look so hot now, do you?" Hope getting out of prison was a miscarriage of justice. Toni is different, but Hope is in the same group as Laurie and Melinda... she should've served her full sentence if she were truly remorseful.

Absolutely Henny! I've only read the quick synopsis of this story online...They say the two books written were much more heartbreaking in detail. I am the mother of an only child...a 12-year-old girl. PURE EVIL INCARNATE is what these 4 beasts are...nothing less. If God forbid, that were to happen to my daughter, I would make it my mission in life to hunt these 4 down like the ANIMALS they are. To think that 2 of them are out of prison makes me absolutely SICK. Glad you gave this guy a piece of your mind...obviously, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Such a tragedy. RIP Shanda <3, October 10, 2013

By

This review is from: Little Lost Angel (Kindle Edition)
I remember coming across the book Cruel Sacrifice when I was in high school. I've always been a huge book worm and true crime books happen to be my favorite. After reading that book, Shanda's story has stuck with me ever since. I just recently purchased this book on my Kindle after finding out it had been released revolving around her death, the case and what not. Of the two books, Little Lost Angel has to be my favorite. It goes way more in depth than what the other one did. I feel the other one didn't touch on Shanda like it should have. This book brought out so much emotion in me that the other book didn't. I cried for Shanda. Justice was never really fulfilled in her case. Her murderers should have all gotten life in prison with no chance of parole. Of course this happened back in the early 90's and they were more lenient back then it seems. Shanda will never be forgotten by me or anyone else who is so truly passionate about her case. Thank you to the author for writing this book. RIP Shanda. <3

This book still gives me chills- I just cannot believe people, especially kids, can do something so horrific like this. The author did a great job on portraying the Sherar family.

I stumbled upon this horrific tragedy while preparing to write a research paper. I immediately bought and started reading this book. It's a book that will give you nightmares and make you sick to your stomach, but I believe it shows the true regard many people have to human life, none. Very well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars  I wouldn't say "I Love It" being such an extremely tragic story, March 12, 2013

Gripping story and shed light on all key characters. It was interesting to see how dramatic Melinda can be, crying and carrying on during the court precedings. I saw a fairly recent turn of events in a news story where Shanda's mother in an act of forgiveness, donated a dog for Melinda to train and named it Angel in honor of her daughter. There was a brief clip where Melinda said she "WAS a monster." She was crying and barely blurted this out before the scene focuses on how her life has changed. I understand Shanda's mother need to forgive because that's what her daughter would want and thus allow her to live with less bitterness and hurt. However, I still see Melinda as a monster who can cry at a drop of a hat and typical of a histrionic persona. I agree with Jackie that as long as Melinda does her time, her lifetime in prison, then that's fine. She doesn't deserve a place back in society. Only dogs should be in her company so that she does not have a chance to live a life Shanda never could. (although I love dogs and do not mean that in derogatory way to animals)

Awesome book, sad story. Being from Louisville and only a few years younger than Shanda really hit a spot for me bc I've grown up with the punk kids like Laurie, Melinda, and Toni and the followers like hope who wanted to fit in so bad she would go to great lengths to be liked, I feel she should have gotten the same sentence as the rest. She is just as responsible for shandas death as if she'd lit the fire herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars  A Diabolical Crime, December 8, 2012

By
Kevin M. Sullivan - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: Little Lost Angel (Kindle Edition)
I picked up a copy of this book years ago when it was first released. Being from Louisville, KY, I knew it would be a difficult book to read, as I was well aware of the circumstances surrounding this horrendous murder that happened in our own "back yard" as it were, and most people from this region of the country followed the case from the moment of the murder, to the subsequent arrests, and the painful trial that followed.

It is a difficult book to read, without question. But it is a book which must be read, if for no other reason than to understand what horrible things can happen even among young people when a hidden desire to murder is present. It's a cautionary tale of what can go wrong when certain other factors are present, and parents should take a second look at the friends of their children; especially if they see things that trouble them.

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
"Little Lost Angel" by Michael Quinlan is one fine book on the Shanda Sharer case. He took his time crafting the book and the book was well balanced. He is meticulous in his writing anyway and it shows in his book. I got to know him well because he and I both attended the hearings and talked quite a bit during recesses. Well worth the time to buy and read this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars  You won't rest easy after reading this case, July 30, 2008

By
Deidre Huesmann (Bremerton, WA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
How does one even begin to approach this horrid, gruesome true story about the atrocities committed against Shanda Sharer? Moreover, how does an author write objectively, so all sides can be seen and the reader can draw his or her own conclusions about Shanda and the four girls who killed her?

Michael Quinlan manages to do this, not only objectively, but thoroughly.
The book has been out of print for quite some time now, but even read second-hand, with the pages nearly falling apart, you can't tear your eyes away from the pages. I started it last night and finished it this afternoon, hardly able to sleep.
Shanda Sharer was the new twelve year-old at school in a small town in Indiana. Always an outgoing girl, she quickly made friends, even with a girl she got into a fight with within her first week. This girl was Amanda Heavrin. Amanda, though already in a relationship with classmate Melinda Loveless, took a liking to Shanda and, over time, persuaded her into an intimate relationship.
While Quinlan's prose may seem to imply Shanda was tricked into the lesbian affair, it's a valid viewpoint considering Shanda's alleged "boy craziness" and how she got a new boyfriend quickly after transfering out of Amanda and Melinda's school. This was not a homophobic viewpoint; merely a presentation of how Shanda behaved before and after meeting Amanda.
Shanda was not portrayed as the perfect little girl. She lied to her parents, made mistakes, and tried to hide her relationship with Amanda not only from her parents but Melinda Loveless as well. Once she switched schools, she became more like her old self, hanging out with boys and rebelling less.
Despite the horror of what she helped to in the torturing and murdering of Shanda, Melinda is given a fair background as well. Her tormented home life--which was never confirmed, but still weighs as a heavy possibility--would help explain her drastic mood swings between loving Amanda and saying she never wanted to see her again; claiming Shanda is cute but she wants her dead.
Laurie Tackett, Hope Rippey, and Toni Lawrence are all described in their home lives, their pasts, and their behavior during the murder. All sides are given--they are despicable, yet you find yourself almost wanting to sympathize with them.
Almost... because the details of how Shanda was tortured and murdered are gruesome. No website online even touches upon the details like Quinlan does. The imagery is nightmarish--how Shanda is stabbed, the proof of sodomy, her eyes rolled back into her head, the trunk door slammed on her, how her corpse was found charred from the waist up with her arms outstretched. And that's only a portion of what this 12 year-old girl suffered at the hands of her murderers.
Quinlan has done a wonderful job portraying this heartbreaking story. It proves how just simple communication between parents and children could prevent something like this happening, whether the children are in Shanda's shoes, Amanda Heavrin's, or even Melinda's.
This book really ought to be republished. No one with even a vague interest of true crime should lack this volume in their libraries. It's emotional, factual, and presented in a way that honors Shanda Sharer's memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Chilling!, April 28, 2006

By
Sleepy Hollow "Carole" (Louisville, Ky USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I read Little Lost Angel a few years ago and it is truly the most horrifying story I have ever read. Unfortunately I live just 150 miles away from Madison so I got first hand information on this case.
And Hope Rippey just got out of jail today. This girl (and I put that in very loose terms) poured gasoline over a helpless 12 year old child and sprayed Windex over her wounds. These four abominations don't deserve the same considerations of other humans. And of all things I saw a picture of [...] Toni Lawerence smiling. (Sorry[...]is the kindest word I have for these girls. You don't want to hear the rest.) She lost her right to ever smile or be happy for the rest of her rotten life. If she spends the rest of her life in sack cloth, doing good deeds for the rest of humanity and crying over her part in this vile act she might find atonement. Maybe.
In 1989 my best friends brother died of leukemia at age 15 and ripped his entire family to shreds but as heartbreaking as it was it's at least believable. Shanda Sharer's murder defies all
belief. I know she and David are with God and I can see them running through heaven holding hands. That won't happen to these pieces of filth. May they know no peace for the rest of their miserable lives. I don't want to be any of them on Judgement Day.
 Carole Taylor

I cried during much of this book, I was horrified beyond belief and it made me sick to my stomach to think of what this poor girl went through, my sister was murdered in 2002 and shoved into a trunk, so I know the pain and anger her family feels and will always feel, my heart goes out to her friends and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars  This is STILL a heartbreaking story!, April 26, 2005

By
A. Hake "navygirl1997" (Saint Petersburg, FL) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
This is a really well written book. I was sorry to learn that the author has since passed away from brain cancer. My sympathies to his family & friends!

I was 14 when this horrific brutal murder took place, and living in Kentucky, about 30 miles south of Louisville. I think it is truely SAD that ALL 4 of these girls did NOT get the DEATH PENALTY for what they did to this beautiful little girl! I couldn't then, and still can't imagine doing something like that to another human being! Now that I am 28 and a mother of a little girl, I only pray that the Lord above continues to give Shanda's parents, friends, and loved ones the strength to get through each day! I wish Toni Lawrence had NEVER again seen the light of day! I think these girls should NEVER be released from prison! I don't care if they were young, I was young once too, and I would NEVER think of doing something like this, and YES, even if I found myself in a similar situation, I WOULD have found help for Shanda, myself, & the other girls involved! May each of those girls live with the same pain that Shanda felt EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars  Chilling!, April 28, 2006

By
Sleepy Hollow "Carole"

Seems I was the first to vote Yes on this review. I had read Cruel Sacrifice, but only heard of Little Lost Angel while checking out the price for Cruel Sacrifice. While this review doesn't go into details, it would surely warn prospective readers that the crime involved was not run-of-the-mill, and that they need to be able to deal with a vicious murder of a pre-teen by her schoolmates. For this reason, I felt it was a good review.

I agree with the reviewers assessment of the perpetrators of this horrific, premeditated crime, as abominations.

5.0 out of 5 stars  I'm sorry for your loss, May 12, 2004

By
Erin (Charlestown, Indiana) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I live in Indiana. I read the book when I was probably about 12 or 13 years old. And for me to read that was just horrifying I just recently read it again and cried alot during it. It is so sad to have to read about that. I didn't personally know her but one of my friends did. I live in Clark County and I grew up in New Albany, Clarksville, Jeffersonville, and all the surrounding areas. I was surprised to hear that Toni got out. I hope the rest of them rot in prison. They will never know how much heartache they have caused Shanda's family. The Sharer family- if you read this ever know that I am truly sorry for you loss and may Shanda rest in peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars  good book. I think it says it all well., May 8, 2004

By
Bethann Druin (Jeffersonville, IN) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
The people that did that to Shanda are sorry excuses for human beings. Every last one of them. I don't care that 2 of them didn't actually do anything to her & just sit in the car or whatever. They are just as guilty as the other 2.They should all burn in hell.Someone should take them to a field & do they same to them that they did to her. They will be never know the pain that they caused Shanda & her family. All I can say is you reap what you sow. It will come back to get them. They will pay for this. God does things his own way & thankfully he doesn't forget. Their time will come at judgement day & then Shanda can rest peacefully.

5.0 out of 5 stars  A sad and shocking tale, September 19, 2000

By
Ami Galli - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I read this book for the first time about 5 years ago and it still haunts me. I have also read Aprodite Jones' version and it was very disappoiting. Where Jones ' main focus was sensationalism and lesbian teens with knives, "...Angel" told this heartwrenching true tale with feeling and dignity, and with Shanda's familys' input. This sad, shocking tale proves that truth really is stranger than fiction. And much, much sadder.

5.0 out of 5 stars  A Very Good Book But A Very Hard Lesson, June 8, 2000

By
ama130 (San Jose, California) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I first read Cruel Sacrifice in '96 for a school book report, and later found Little Lost Angel. I think it is so terrible that Shanda died the way she did and that the one's responsible for her death get to celebrate their birthdays and still see their loved ones. Just the other day I heard Toni Lawrence tried to get out of prison but was denied. True, she wasn't the one that beat Shanda or stabbed her. But I honestly believe she should stay in prison until her full prison term is up. Same goes for the others, Melinda, Hope and Laurie. But overall Michael Quinlan's book is great reading material.

5.0 out of 5 stars  A powerful indictment of today's permissive society, April 15, 2000

By
Becky - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
Shakespeare's play "Macbeth" had three witches, this story has four. But while the witches in "Macbeth" were interesting characters, the witches Loveless, Tackett, Rippey, and Lawrence committed a horrific act that not even a playwright of Shakepeare's genius could have devised. These fictional witches stirred a cauldron of food and water, while the four witches of this story ignited a cauldron of grief and despair for Shanda's family and friends which will never simmer down. How ironic it is that one of their stops on that fatal night was the witches castle. If they are ever released from prison, they should take up residence there. This book emphasises the yawning gaps between some parents and their children, and graphically depicts the tragedies that ensue if these gaps are not bridged.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Little Lost Angel blows Cruel Sacrifice out of the water, April 7, 2000

By
Jack (Orange, Texas) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
As someone who actually KNEW Shanda, went to school with her, ate lunch with her occasionally and was forunate enough to call her my friend; I must say that Mister Quinlan hit the old nail on the head when he wrote this book. Ms. Aphrodite Jones set out to portray Shanda as a little dyke when she wasn't! She was only 12 1/2 for crying out loud, people. :( I know Melinda Loveless and I feel that she got exactly what she deserved. The same is to be said for Laurie Tackett, Hope Rippey and Toni Lawrence. This is not something that is easily forgotten, especially by me; more so by them though. No longer can Shanda's bell like laughter fill my ears, no longer can I tell my innermost personal secrets to her. She was my friend and I'll never forget her. Thank you and God bless, Jack Eugene Moore III

5.0 out of 5 stars  Hitting very close to home, its scary., November 19, 1999
By A Customer

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I too found the book very hard to put down. Even more so since I live in Jeffersonville,IN. I didn't know Shanda but just the fact that it could've been me scares me very much. I would have never thought something like this could've happened anywhere near my home. Shanda and her family will forever be in my heart and my mind. Every time I drive to Utica, I catch a glance of the witches castle and wonder how no one could've seen a fire or people up there. If only someone would have seen them. We would still have this beautiful young lady as a good addition to our community.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Very Chilling, Disturbing account, August 31, 1999

By
Dade (Metropolis, USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
This book really hit me hard when i read it. From the moment i read the first page, I didnt put it down, except to sleep. What is very frightening about it, is that this could happen anywhere, and at any time. I found myself obsessed over this trial after reading this and Aphrodite Jones's Cruel Sacrifice. This book compels you and drags you into each of these poor girl's lives and minds, highlighting every specific detail of the course of events. My heart goes out to the Sharer family.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Broken hearted for this "little lost angel"., November 3, 1998
By A Customer

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I read this book four years ago and still remember every vivid detail. Though a book about the torture and death of a young, beautiful girl will never rank as "wonderful or excellent" in my mind, I found this book to be very hard to put down. My heart is broken for this young girl and her family.

By

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
I too am a lesbian, and jealousy sometimes is very overwhelming. For someone to kill over something so minor is insane. I will remember this book forever and it will make me wonder how people can be so cruel. These women deserve the death penalty. I can't believe they would ever consider letting these women out EVER!!!!

Because she was only 12 years old, she hadn't had the time to explore her sexuality. The fact that she was questioning is normal, but even if she grew up to be a "dyke", why would that make her murder any less horrifying? She could have grown up to be gay, or heterosexual, or bisexual, and her value as a person would have remained the same. It makes me angry when people try to argue something as irrelevant as sexuality when we should be focused on other things regarding this crime. Who cares if she was a little dyke or not? Honestly.

5.0 out of 5 stars  A sad, but true account of violence among teens, June 27, 1998
By A Customer

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
This book is so good, I read it about 20 times. I cried when I read how they murdered Shanda, and I thought it was insane how much jealousy those four teenaged girls felt for the 12 year-old. I think it was well written, and the way it was written made the facts more vivid. I think what those girls did to Shanda was terrible and they were lucky that they only got 20 years in prison. I'm sure they regret what they did now, but maybe only because they got caught. I hope they know what they've done...Ruined a 12 year old girls life and their own.

5.0 out of 5 stars  A Complete Tragedy, February 17, 1998

By
abraytisj@doleta.gov (Chicago) - See all my reviews

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
Both "Little Lost Angel" and "Cruel Sacrifice" cover the Shanda Sharer murder, and I recommend that you read both. "Cruel Sacrifice" presents a lot of background on the four young killers, while the focus of "Little Lost Angel" is Shanda Sharer. Thus, both books approach this horrific tragedy from different viewpoints.
This is a story of a complete tragedy. Not just twelve-year-old Shanda's gruesome murder, but the wasted lives of her assailants moved me deeply. Like any great book, both "Little Lost Angel" and "Cruel Sacrifice" were educational in the best sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars  the best book ever, January 22, 1998
By A Customer

This review is from: LITTLE LOST ANGEL (Paperback)
We thought the book was an incredible insight into what can go wrong with the youth of today, coming from broken homes and minimal parental involvement. The descriptions were graphic and horrific, we had many sleepless nights feeling the pain and desperation of poor little Shanda. The author's writing style allowed us, as readers, to become part of the Shanda murder and trial, allowing us to feel as though we were there. We definetly would rate this book with a two thumbs up (Maybe four).

I had read Cruel Sacrifice in the past but not this book and should buy it but I did notice several reviews of it pointing out the motive of jealousy. It reminded me of another murder of 16-year-old Laurie Show who, while older, was still too young to suffer what she did at the hands of her murderers who were also fueled by jealousy.
