I wish I was this enlightened as an 18 year old. Although I was Baptist and not Mormon.
Don't play loud at work. Lots of F-bombs. Awesome letter!

The notion of god leads to maladaptive behavior, wishful thinking and living in the passive voice. That is an opinion, I have no reason to give evidence. It is a subjective statement.

Belief in god and its effect on cognition is a matter of levels.
Moderates, little if any effect.
Heavily Indoctrinated, semi-fundamentalists, an alarming level of cognitive malaise and poor behaviour exhibited.
Fundamentalists have severe cognitive malaise and a very poor understanding of reality.
But, this can also be said about Nationalism, and other belief systems, not just religion.
Anything that relies on Irrational Reasoning for its survival will hijack human cognitive faculties and render those deeply indoctrinated into cognitive Zombies.
:-D~

I read that earlier Daniel. That's the best thing that can happen to religion. Everyone can just resign from it.

Yes... after the Mormon church decided that children of same-sex couples couldn't be treated as full church members until after they turned 18 and denounced their mothers' or their fathers' relationship. So much for "family values"!
(Let's not forget that the Mormon establishment was also a primary force behind California's "Proposition H8" (Prop. 8) which took away marriage recognition.)

It's amazing how imaginary plots like the covenant can give a story a realistic boost, expanding the particulars and making them more credible, while being no more than part and parcel of the same bullshit.

Here's the real poser: do the higher-ups of the LDS church realize just how badly they've shot themselves in the foot with this ruling? They have alienated an obviously considerable number of their now-former members while simultaneously demonstrating the inarguable bigotry of their belief system.
How much more purposefully stupid can you get?

But Loren, it's not the decision of the Mormon hierarchy. They just pass on the word of God. Im sure the LDS priesthood didn't really want this harsh decision. But they had no choice.

Though sometimes worldly governments can actually persuade God to change his mind, like when the Mormons got a new revelation that black men could, after all, receive the priesthood (routinely given to white males in good standing, allowing various blessings and leadership roles and, eventually, access to the highest levels of heaven).

I don't think they'll be able to win him back.
All rational people know that Mormons are a pack of retards.
It's nice to see that some from within are also becoming rational.

Mormons are dumb for believing in the plates and translations Smith was able to do of them before Maroni spirits them back into heaven. Mormons also had some renegade sects trying to kill each other in the 80's. That was all about this multiple wives stuff they claim they no longer have. A little power struggle there.
Switching now to how dumb fundamentalist Christianity can be, my friend is talking to me about the Ark of the Covenant. You can't touch this thing or you will be killed. (He read the Bible and watched Indiana Jones movies) In reality nobody knows where this ark is today because it was stolen so many times. Nobody died from touching it. God lied about that the same way he lied in the Garden of Eden.

It's possible there never was an arc of the covenant. What evidence is there for one?
Like other religions, I bet there are a lot of intelligent Mormons who stay in for the community, the ritual, the feeling of safety within the warm bosom of the Mormon church, and for the ritual. Then turn off their brains about whether they really believe the bullshit that emanated from a 19th century huckster. I know a lot of nice Mormons, and I'm not in a position to argue their faith. But I just don't how they can believe all that malarky.

If nobody has claimed it yet I want to live on Pluto when I die. (How do you live when you are dead?) Remember this is all about family and being together forever so your uncle Magellan will most likely be there. You can baptise the already dead into your religion and all live in harmony -- after you are dead.
Sorry. I AM in a position to argue that faith or any other faith. Faith is nonsense!

Or if such a thing ever existed. It seems more along the lines of another myth that has been distorted and passed on through the centuries.

They still knock doors and annoy people in Cardiff. I often wonder why they need to tell others about such a ubiquitous presence. It surely can't be due to him not being able to be everywhere at the same time, or having some omnipotent communication problem, maybe he's just not as much of a know-all as he thinks he is.

And so did the kid, Pat. It's a perfect metaphor. I choose my own guilty pleasures, including a Big Mac now and then, but I would by no means insist that others share my eccentricities. Believers don't just insist, they shove it down kids' throats like it was life-saving medicine when it is anything but.
It is way past time this particular cat was belled.

To the religious, it truly IS life-saving medicine, in their opinion. They are performing the ultimate act of altruism and compassion by sharing their remedy for life with you.

It's a funny sort of "life" that begins after you're dead.
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. Black is white. Night is day.

Damn. That kid had a round in the chamber and a LONG clip behind it ... and every last shot hit center bull.
And yeah, Mormons DO need to hear that. Someone needs to go find a knitting needle and stab their bubble until it pops and make sure that message and others like it are delivered. They need to know that their bullshit has been seen though, that it is not being bought and indeed actively rejected, and most of all, that their belief system is a joke which isn't funny and is actively harming people.
Way to sing it, kid!
