LGBT Catholics Say New Vatican Document is “inadequate and alienating,” Call for “official input” into Synod on the Family
December 9, 2014. Boston, MA. Responding to today’s release of a document that will set the agenda for the second phase of the Vatican’s Synod on the Family, to be held in Rome October 4-25, 2015, leaders of DignityUSA said it was “inadequate and alienating” in its approach to the issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Catholics and their families.
Marianne Duddy-Burke, DignityUSA’s Executive Director said, “We continue to be deeply frustrated with the approach Church officials are taking to the Synod on the Family in general, and with the discussion of LGBT issues in particular. There remains no opportunity for openly LGBT Catholics, or for families who delight in their LGBT members, to have official input into the deliberations, or to vote on policies and doctrines that will affect us for decades to come. Even the language used to refer to lesbian and gay people (’people with homosexual tendencies’) is a reversion to the dated and judgmental tone that so many had hoped was fading into the past, given Pope Francis’ apparent comfort in talking with and about LGBT people in a more realistic and respectful way.
“LGBT people certainly need appropriate pastoral care that starts from a position of acknowledging our moral equality with all other people, and that accepts the reality of our lives and the families we create. But we are not a problem for the Church to solve. We are human beings, baptized members of our Church, God’s beloved just as are other members of the Church. We have ‘gifts and qualities’ needed and freely offered to the Church and the world, to borrow language from the previous Synod’s interim report,” Duddy-Burke continued.
“The leaders of our Church need to humble themselves and listen to the people of the Church. Catholic families all over the globe have carefully considered both Church teaching and the reality of their LGBT members’ lives, and have resoundingly rejected doctrine in favor of loving embrace. Church officials are decades behind the faithful in realizing the true Gospel teachings about LGBT people. We call on them to actively listen to the call of the Spirit spoken in this truth, or I fear the upcoming Synod will lead to more pain, more alienation, and more devastation in the lives of LGBT people and families everywhere in the world,” said Duddy-Burke.
Noting that the Vatican was instructing bishops to engage “all levels of the Church,” including “clergy, religious, lay people and lay organizations” in gathering input prior to the Synod, DignityUSA repeated its call, issued prior to the November 2014 meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, for a Year of Dialogue on the Family in all dioceses across the U. S.
“While some U. S. Bishops established ways to listen to the Catholics they shepherd prior to the 2014 gathering, many did not,” said Duddy-Burke. “All of us deserve the opportunity to have our voices heard, and our concerns, hopes, and ideas carried to this gathering. An open dialogue will benefit our entire Church, enrich its ministries, and provide opportunities for re-engagement for those who have questioned their place in the Church.”

Advent is Upon Us
by Lewis Speaks-Tanner, Vice President, DignityUSA
Each year, December seems to go quicker than it did the year before. There are so many things to get done. The season is about preparing, from making gift lists to decorating the house, to making donations to favorite charities. It is important to take time out of the busy season to recharge spiritual batteries. This Advent, I will be reading Small Victories: Spotting Improbable Moments of Grace by Ann Lamott after hearing wonderful reviews about her previous and current books.
Each Advent I am reminded of The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About the Jesus’s Birth by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan. In it, the authors make a point that the Christmas stories “proclaim God’s peace through justice over against Rome’s peace through victory”. Throughout these 45 years, DignityUSA members continue to work for justice. We have had many advances and many disappointments over the years. The work continues.
Marriage equality is now in 35 states and the District of Columbia with 64% of the US population living in states where same sex couples can marry. Fifteen more states to go! The momentum is on the side of justice.
Even with this major advance, there are only 18 states and D.C. that prohibit discrimination against sexual orientation and gender identity (an additional 3 states prohibit discrimination against sexual orientation only). Twenty-nine states do give LGBT employees and citizens statewide protection against discrimination. Believe it or not, as early as 1974, there has been an Employment Non-Discrimination bill introduced in Congress. With the new Republican majorities in both houses of Congress, it does not appear hopeful that ENDA will pass. Without these protections, LGBT people can be fired from their jobs or denied promotions.
The omission of women at the highest levels of our Church continues to be a huge problem for many Catholics. It is an injustice. Thankfully, there are more voices speaking out not just for Catholic women, but all women!
As the Extraordinary Synod of the Family concluded in Rome, DignityUSA and other members of Women-Church Convergence, a coalition of feminist Catholic groups, gathered for its annual meeting and issued the statement, Catholic Women: Our Absence Means Synod Lacks Credibility
“The egregious omission of women and families in forming Church policy has a devastating impact on Catholics and others worldwide. Instead of an obsession with doctrine, families need the Church to dismantle systems of oppression, work to end violence against women and children, stand firmly against war and the destruction of our planet, recognize women’s moral agency, and honor decisions about family life made with informed consciences and prayerful discernment…”
President Carter in his latest book, A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power, decries the religious discrimination against women. The misinterpretation of the Bible and the Quran, have led to the violence of women and lack of equal opportunities for women.
Sponsored by the United Nations Secretary-General, from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world. For more information go to http://endviolence.un.org/about.shtml.
There is much work to be done. My prayer for Advent is that we have a prayerful, productive and stress-less Advent! May our Christmas be blessed as we continue to proclaim God’s peace through justice!
Merry Christmas to one and all!

DignityUSA Tells Congress: “Religious Exemptions Harm People and Catholics Don’t Support Them”
DignityUSA has been involved in a number of recent efforts to alert Congress to significant problems with efforts by US Catholic bishops to expand the number of people covered by “religious exemptions.” These exemptions exclude certain faith-affiliated institutions from laws providing protection from discrimination in employment, public accommodations, and health care coverage.
On October 30, DignityUSA and eight Dignity chapters were among 43 Catholic organizations that co-signed a letter to Congress expressing concern about efforts to expand religious exemptions in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Burwell v. Hobby Lobby decision. The letter read in part:
“As Catholics, we are compelled to work toward justice and equality and to create a society in which women and men, young and old, poor and rich, gay and straight, are treated with the same dignity and respect, and granted the same opportunities. We are called to respect people’s decisions made in good conscience, even by those with whom we disagree, and to reject attempts to use religion or law to coerce someone to act against her or his conscience. Our faith commands us to have a preferential option for the poor: to have their needs always as a priority for our actions as individuals and as a society.
Under the pretense of “religious liberty,” businesses are demanding permission to discriminate against people who hold beliefs with which the business owners disagree. And sadly, our government is giving them its blessing to do so. As a result, the common good for which we strive is imperiled, and the social justice to which we are committed seems an ever more distant goal.”
Along with Call To Action, Catholics for Choice, CORPUS, and WATER, DignityUSA sponsored a survey of 1,042 Catholic voters from all across the country to determine what Catholics believe about expansion of religious exemptions. The findings were consistent with decades of studies documenting Catholics’ support for LGBT equality, for equality in access to health care services, and for Catholic politicians who vote differently from bishops’ directives. Among the key findings of the study:
•Eighty-seven percent (87%) of US Catholics oppose a tax-funded organization refusing to hire someone who is gay or lesbian, including 71% who strongly disapprove.
•Nearly three-quarters (74%) of Catholics disapprove of a law that would allow a business to deny services to employees or customers on the basis of sexual orientation due to an owner’s religious beliefs.
•Eighty-four percent (84%) of Catholics disapprove of a guidance counselor refusing to help a gay or lesbian student due to the counselor’s religious beliefs, and 70% strongly disapprove of this.
On November 17, the organizations sponsoring the survey held a Congressional briefing and a series of meetings with Senators and Representatives to discuss the survey and the implications for the upcoming legislative sessions. Marianne Duddy-Burke, DignityUSA Executive Director, was the lead speaker at this briefing. She discussed how the spate of firings of LGBT Church employees, implementation of “morality clauses” or “code of conduct” clauses, denial of benefits for same-sex spouses, and refusals of service by publicly funded social service agencies could increase dramatically if religious exemptions are expanded.
Following the briefing, Marianne met with staff from the offices of Senators Tammy Baldwin (WI), Barbara Boxer (CA), and Patricia Murray (WA), as well as five Representatives. Many had not considered the impact of religious exemptions on LGBT people or the degree of disagreement between bishops and Catholic voters on a wide range of issues. They appeared to appreciate the advance information on the kinds of issues that may come before them in the months ahead.
Vision Statement
DignityUSA envisions and works for a time when Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Catholics are affirmed and experience dignity through the integration of their spirituality with their sexuality, and as beloved persons of God participate fully in all aspects of life within the Church and Society.

Our Savior, Pope Francis?
by Jim Smith, DignityUSA Associate Director
I hear a lot of hope these days from Dignity members across the country. Most of it is rooted in perceptions of Pope Francis. My fear is that those hopes will not be realized, and deep discouragement, cynicism, and separation from all things Catholic will take hold.
This Pope has indeed said some things to inspire our hope. My hope included. Yet I’m aware that this Church belongs to all of us, is all of us, including a majority of Catholics who continue to lean toward deeper understanding and true acceptance of their LGBT kin. Our most realistic hope is with these folks on the grassroots level. My most credible hope also lies with the people I’ve met in Dignity chapters and caucuses who see themselves as agents of transformation. Not as saints or prophets, but as ordinary persons with a grasp of their baptismal grace, a belief in their dignity as queer and ally children of God, and a conviction of “if not us, then who?” when it comes to planting seeds of justice in the larger faith community.
Thank you Dignity Catholics. Whether or not Pope Francis truly rises to the role of agent of real change, there are many among the priesthood of believers who are already those agents, and many more Catholics in the wings waiting for us to invite them out and give them a role in a cast of witnesses to the core of Jesus’ life and teachings.

I was baptized in another Christian faith and want to become a Catholic Christian. What process do I follow?
A person baptized into another Christian faith is received into full communion with the Catholic Church through the completion of their initiation by the reception of Confirmation and Eucharist. The process is similar to that for others in inquiry although the traditions and beliefs unique to the Catholic faith may need to be studied in order to more fully understand the Catholic Church. They are referred to as candidates for reception into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. A sponsor helps the person along their spiritual journey.

What is the source of these questions?
The following questions are based upon an article that originally appeared in the Dignity/Washington newsmonthly and is reproduced here as an example for a program in your chapter. There are many different models you can use. Some smaller chapters may not have the volunteers or the resources to conduct a full program and may want to use the resources of a local welcoming parish. Hopefully, the questions and answers will create a spark that will help you deepen your community's spiritual life and commitment to community. The questions are universal although some of the answers may not apply to your chapter's situation.

I was Baptized Catholic but was never Confirmed. What process do I follow?
I was Baptized Catholic but was never Confirmed. What process do I follow?
The process is similar to that for the unbaptized in that the person studies and discusses scripture but it is different in that they are already a member of the Christian community of believers and may not participate in all of the rites associated with full initiation. Completing one’s Christian initiation through Confirmation is either done by us or through a Parish depending upon the individual's circumstance. Confirmations can occur at the Easter Vigil or at another time such as Pentecost. A person becomes a candidate for confirmation and has a sponsor or sponsors to help them along their spiritual journey. They may also participate in group discussions of the Word with other members in Inquiry. They are referred to as candidates for Confirmation.

I’m not Catholic nor have I been baptized but I’m interested in becoming a Christian. What is the process?
When a person decides to embark upon a journey leading to initiation into the full sacramental life of the community, they begin a period of inquiry known as the Catechumenate and they are known as Catechumens. The process can take anywhere from six months to a year and is typified by the periodic sharing of the Word of God and deepening sense of spirituality and Christ. A more formal period of inquiry begins typically during Lent and culminates in Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. This period is often referred to as the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults or RCIA. A sponsor helps the catechumen prepare for Initiation sacraments.

What is the source of these questions?
Taxonomy upgrade extras:
•Worship and Liturgy
The following questions are based upon an article that originally appeared in the Dignity/Washington newsmonthly and is reproduced here as an example for a program in your chapter. There are many different models you can use. Some smaller chapters may not have the volunteers or the resources to conduct a full program and may want to use the resources of a local welcoming parish. Hopefully, the questions and answers will create a spark that will help you deepen your community's spiritual life and commitment to community.

I was baptized in another Christian faith and want to become a Catholic Christian. What process do I follow?
Taxonomy upgrade extras:
•Worship and Liturgy
A person baptized into another Christian faith is received into full communion with the Catholic Church through the completion of their initiation by the reception of Confirmation and Eucharist. The process is similar to that for others in inquiry although the traditions and beliefs unique to the Catholic faith may need to be studied in order to more fully understand the Catholic Church. They are referred to as candidates for reception into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

What are the Sacraments Dignity celebrates?
Taxonomy upgrade extras:
•Worship and Liturgy
The most frequently received sacrament is the last of the so-called "Sacraments of Initiation" — Eucharist. Our Sunday liturgies offer all believing, baptized Christians the eucharistic feast at the Table. The first two Initiation Sacraments are Baptism and Confirmation. Dignity also validly provides those sacraments or facilitates the reception of those sacraments depending upon individual needs and circumstances.

What are Sacraments?
Taxonomy upgrade extras:
•Worship and Liturgy
The sacraments are a sign through which the Church manifests and celebrates its faith and communicates the saving grace of God. More simply stated, God wants us to enter into a deep relationship and these are mileposts along that lifelong journey that provide us with special opportunities to receive God’s grace and love.

Besides the activities mentioned what else does Inquiry mean?
Taxonomy upgrade extras:
•Worship and Liturgy
The Inquiry program at Dignity offers members of our community the opportunity to explore their spirituality and consider entry into the full sacramentality of a Christian Community. As Catholic Christians, we recognize seven sacraments and endeavor to offer or facilitate reception of these sacraments.

What is Inquiry?
Taxonomy upgrade extras:
•Worship and Liturgy
Inquiry is a spiritual journey that deepens our sense of spirituality and community. Examples of the beginning of Inquiry might be participation in the Lenten Ashes to Easter program, New Steps, participation in our Sunday Liturgies, Days of recollection, retreats, or our own personal experiences that draw us into a need for a deeper sense of community and spirituality. It can come as the result of a great personal tragedy or loss, or as a moment of great happiness and joy such as coming out.

DignityUSA Is Calling YOU…
By Lourdes Rodriguez-Nogues, DignityUSA President
Yes, you. We know that you have skills that DignityUSA can put to good use. Thus, we are calling on anyone who feels called to serve as a member of the DignityUSA Board.
