How do you respond to: "Are you against religion?", "Are you against Christmas?"

I was asked by an Xtian if I decorated for Christmas.
When I answered "NO" - I got the questions I have heard before.

"Are you against Religion? Are you against Christmas."

(Religion is bad - so yes I am against religion)

Any of you here get these same questions?
How do you handle them?

You are right!  Depends on the reason(s) for the divorce, I'm sure.
I have a friend who is still mourning his ex-wife (who died a year ago), even though they were divorced almost 50 years ago.

Steph, I rarely am asked anymore because anyone who has known me for the past 50 years knows I think ALL religions are bull-roar simply for the purpose of controlling large numbers of people.  And if they do ask, I tell them so.  I especially resent the fact that my property taxes are as high as they are because religious organizations pay NO taxes.  I don't think that's a bit fair.
This really goes back to the late 1950s when I was in Holiday, and ALL major holidays were 2-show days.  Working days for which our wages were taxed, of course.
We don't decorate for xmas since our Dad died in 1985; I don't think he was a believer (he never said), but he enjoyed the pagan aspects of the holidays.  It just wasn't any fun without him.  And my sister who shares this house is a JW, and they don't celebrate anything.

They should tax churches - I agree with you.

It's 12-28-2014 and I saw on TV today that "dispensationalism" started a view of Evangelical Christianity in the 1800's by then UK preacher John Darby. That view compartmentalizes the Bible into modern Evangelical belief and in the US alone we have 45,000 churches and 30 million members believing this tripe and even trying to get it into our schools and our laws.
This is why you should be against religion.
Up to you on Christmas, but be aware that that Christ was never "in Christmas" until almost 1000 years after his death. The Evangelicals don't even know what they fight for do they?

I didn't see the BBC version James, and I would surely hesitate to put Cumberbatch up against a lion of the classical British stage like Jacobi. Benedict did turn in a very deep and nuanced performance though. The insouciant Sherlock role was good rehearsal for this one I'd guess. Rolling Stone's Travers gave him quite a rave, although old Peter isn't necessarily the most reliable film reviewer.

BB, did you ever see the BBC movie on Turing? Cumberbund has to be quite good if he can better the brilliant performing of the openly gay actor, Derek Jacoby. Title was Breaking the Code, and it was exceptional. I almost don't want to see the Cumberbund but know I will do so.

sk8eycat, interesting story in the newest Church and State magazine from Americans United (for Separation) about the lesbian mayor of Houston fucking up royally by sending subpoenas to local churches whose pastors refuse to comply with the benefits extension ordinance she got passed making them do this and that. They sued her and the council, so the respondent with a duces tecum requiring them supply her with texts of sermons given in the last six months, or something like that. The churches refused to comply and there was a hoop de do ending with withdrawl of the subpoenas and a black eye on the mayor. A.U. said it wished the mayor had not done what she had, because her actions were clearly improper. Hate to see a lgbtq pol -- especially one in Texas! -- get out of hand, but of course I sympathized with her. The red state element in that huge city could only be expected to do all it could to blacker her eye.

One of the nicest weddings I ever went to took place on the patio of an English style pub. It was surrounded by flowers & trees, & even a few birds were chirping. A Commissioner of Marriage did the ceremony, & afterwards we had very nice leisurely lunch in the pub. Then we all went back to the bride & groom's home to party,

Went to see The Imitation Game yesterday with Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock fame playing Alan Turing. It wasn't exactly a suspense thriller, but it artfully and subtly depicted the irony of a man who literally saved millions of lives and shaved two years off WW II subsequently being hounded to death by the British government because of what he liked to do with his private parts. Showing a  magnanimity similar to the Pope's with Galileo, they posthumously "pardoned" him fifty years after the fact.

Chrissie, there are other places to have fancy weddings besides churches....hotels, parks, any public space you can rent for a day....or two.Are there non-denominational chapels that ONLY do weddings in the UK?
I guess a church would be less expensive since in the UK, your taxes openly support the Anglican church.  MY taxes invisibly subsidize every effing church in California, because they pay NO taxes on their property, or even for their office supplies and/or toilet paper.  (I tried using pages from the buybull for TP once....not very absorbent.)
It just makes me shudder to think of non-believers having to go through the motions just for the sake of a little pizzazz on their wedding day....

Idaho will be required to pay $400,000 to the legal team they hired in hopes of continued antigay discrimination.  The state's tax dollars at work.

Surely there is a school somewhere that could have used that money.

As a Brit. we are not much into the religious thing but you will find that many of us do want what churches still exist to remain.  Lets face it a Register Office wedding is not very festive or up market.  We get married there and we Christen our kids there, you have to do that because its a bloody good start to a damn good piss up to wet the baby's head.  On the surface of it they say that 60% of us are Atheist or Agnostic but in truth if we were honest it is more like 90%.  The older members of the Tory Party do not want to admit anything because the Queen is the head of The Church of England and they think it would show her disrespect to admit that they think it's a load of crap.  The Christian Religion is loosing all over most of Europe but what is on the rise because of such lax immigration protection and millions of those people who get out of the Middle East to escape to Europe and UK to keep their own countrymen from murdering them but they drag those same beliefs in with them and refuse to accept the lifestyle of the Nation that gave them refuge. So here it is, Brits want something that recognizes that they are joined, it has many advantages.  Most of it is Taxation and of course money talks.
As for the Mormons, If they believe all that about the founding of their church and trust their well being to the pair of knickers that they have on I can see that same sex attraction is not gay, its surely Brotherly Love.  You have to admit they make lovely music.
Well, that's my tuppence worth.

Here is a digest of articles I have been mulling over.

gaystarnews.com.  UK straight couple wants civil partnership.  I don't see why not.  Or better yet - have all of society with civil partnership as the only legal option, and if people want something they have to label marriage, let them get that through their church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or guru.

"My Husband's Not Gay"   - TLC continues it's tradition of sleazy  reality shows, which includes the virulently homphobic Duggar's.  Duck Dynasty is on A&E based on my google search.  The idea here is these guys are attracted to men, but choose not to be gay because Jesus doesn't like it.  And I guess their wives are fine with that.

 Then there's guys kissing guys for the first time - straight and grossed out about it, sort of, but for some reason they are doing it for the video. In the Army, 40 years ago, they used to say you can have sex with a soldier, but not kiss him. It was more crudely stated than that. This video gives me mixed feelings of revulsion, exploitation, not liking the guys involved, and yet it's touching when one got his feelings hurt. Sort of.
