My comments on religiously-based hate and bigotry

I think it is quite frightening that so fundamentalist Christians seek to limit the civil rights of others.  I recently created a blog post dealing with two comments from two fundamentalist Christians dealing with the subject of same-sex marriage in Michigan. Durrell Robinson stated that same-sex couples, members of non-Christian religions and atheists should not have the legal right to marry and said that marriage is a "strictly Christian ritual". I think that Durrell Robinson would be more sympathetic  and show more compassion towards other minority groups as black man.  Durrell seems to forget there are Christians who still believe that being black is a "curse".

The LDS Church still seems to regard black skin as a curse despite the changes in 1978 where black men could hold the Mormon Priesthood, enter into LDS Temples, marry in the Temples, perform Temple rituals and interracial relationships and marriages were seen as permissible, despite the racist passages in the Book of Mormon. There are some Christians who think that interracial marriages and relationships are wrong. The KKK are Christians and they think that Yahweh condones their racist views.

I think it's horrifying that people use their religion as an excuse to be a homophobic or racist bigot because they believe that their deity commands them to behave like that.

There are some Christians who still support racial segregation and slavery. There who Christians who think that all non-Christians should be annihilated from this earth.  Some Christians think that we should accept supernatural claims as "evidence" in secular courts of law.  Some Christians don't believe that women should be able to vote, work outside the home or hold political office. Some Christians want to turn America into an authoritarian theocracy. It's frightening that some people think this way.

Susan Yancer, another commenter stated that she hopes that Michigan won't legalize same-sex marriage because "it is wrong" and that Mark Schauer "needs to go". Why, because same-sex relationships bother you?  She seems to use her deity, whose existence hasn't been proven as an excuse to be a bigot and deny civil rights to minorities that bother her. Susan wrote that her god "says" in the Bible that "man shall not lay with a man as he would a woman". I never heard any god say that, I only see passages written down by ancient Jewish men who claimed that there god hates same-sex relationships for no good reason. What harm do sexual relationships between two men do? They don't do any harm to any persons outside the relationship from what I can tell. Offending the feelings of a deity is not a good excuse to prevent people of the same gender from being intimate with each other.

If a man wants to lay with another man as he would with a woman, then let him have sex with another man.  I wonder if Susan and Durrell support stoning disobedient children to death, beating disobedient slaves, killing people who worship gods other than Yahweh, poisoning women to find out whether or not they cheated on their husbands, prohibiting people from eating shellfish or wearing mixed- fabrics or happily dashing pagan children against stones?  Durrell Robinson agreed with Susan about her views on same-sex marriage.  Why does Mark Schauer need to leave political office, because he refuses to create laws that support your religiously-based prejudices and spend all of his time hating on people that you don't like for what seem to be irrational reasons, Susan?

How would Susan and Durrell like it if American Scientologists and Muslims wanted to take the civil rights of Christians away? Civil marriage is a civil right.  I hope that someday same-sex couples will be able to legally marry in Michigan. "Holy matrimony" and civil marriage are not the same thing.

People like Susan Yancer and Durrell Robinson frighten me, I don't think that they are any better than the KKK or the neo-Nazis. They are the type of people who really do massive harm to the world with their hate and bigotry.
