Don't Dress Homosexual



Fashion icon Giorgio Armani has come under fire after claiming in an interview that gay men "do not need to dress homosexual."
The 80-year-old Italian designer told the Sunday Times magazine that gay men are men "100 percent," and then noted, "When homosexuality is exhibited to the extreme -- to say, 'Ah, you know I'm homosexual,' -- that has nothing to do with me. A man has to be a man."
Armani didn't mince words when it came to women who have had plastic surgery or muscular men, regardless of their sexuality.
"A small breast does not have to become bigger," he said. Later, he added, "I don't like muscle boy. Not too much gym! I like somebody healthy, somebody solid, who looks after his body but doesn't use his muscles too much."
The remarks were quickly challenged on social media. "I'd rather be dressed in drag than spotted in Armani Xchange or any of his other vile labels," one Twitter user wrote, according to The International Business Times.  Added another user, cited by The Independent: "What a plank."

Rick Santorum & Bruce Jenner




Rick Santorum is not changing his mind on LGBTI issues, no matter the kind words offered to Bruce Jenner.
According to Mediaite, the possible 2016 White House candidate, used Facebook to remind he's still a conservative.
'Many of you may have read a story published by the website BuzzFeed where I was asked for my thoughts regarding Bruce Jenner,' Santorum began.  'My comment affirmed Jenner as a person, made by God in His likeness as we all are. It was meant to express empathy not a change in public policy,' the former US senator continued.
He ended the post with the hashtag 'compassion.'
Yesterday, 2 May, Santorum was asked what he thought about Jenner's announcement he will transition to female.
'If he says he’s a woman, then he’s a woman,' Santorum said to BuzzFeed News.  'My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody,' he continued. 'Not to criticize people for who they are. I can criticize, and I do, for what people do, for their behavior.'

Maggie Gallagher Writes Letter to Supreme Court Justice Kennedy




 
Maggie Gallagher, one of the leading marriage equality foes in the US, penned an open letter to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. The essay was published on 1 May in the National Review. Many legal experts see Kennedy as the likely deciding vote in the marriage cases the country's highest court heard last week.
She starts by calling same-sex marriage advocates a force to be reckoned with.  'The forces for gay marriage are powerful. You have been their hero in the past, when gay people were not so powerful,' Gallagher begins.  'The tables are turned now, as I think is clear to everyone,' she continues. 'The LGBT community has built a powerful cultural, legal, and political movement. They are not helpless or friendless.' 
She insists that now people of faith, opposed to gay marriage, need Kennedy's 'help.'

Russian Gay Activists March Alongside 90,000 Others in Labor Day March in St Petersburg



A gay rights contingent prominently marched alongside 90,000 other activists in a massive rally on Labor Day along Nevsky Prospect, St Petersberg's main street.
The state-funded RT news site noted that the marchers were from all colors of the political spectrum, from the ruling United Russia party to Communists and various small opposition groups.
According to the report, the police intervened when controversial legislator Vitaly Milonov, who is known for his anti-gay stance, attempted to block the gay contingent from marching on the grounds of a 'gay propaganda' law he himself sponsored.
As the law prohibits distrubuting any kind of gay-related information to minors, he reportedly brought some minors among his supporters to make his case, the report quoted the Fontanka newspaper as saying.

Anne Hathaway Is Grounded


 
The nameless heroine of George Brant’s Grounded has a schedule many working mothers will recognize. She wakes up, takes her daughter to daycare, goes to her job, comes home, eats dinner with her husband, watches TV and falls asleep. Here’s the twist: the woman is a fighter pilot, and her job entails dropping missiles on military-age males, thousands of miles away. Every day, she sits in a chair at a Nevada airforce base and remotely controls a drone aircraft.
Brant’s monologue, which was seen in Edinburgh in 2013 and off-Broadway in 2014, is back, with a rather more famous figure filling out the flight suit: the Hollywood star Anne Hathaway, who pursued the role after reading a review of an earlier production. She approached Oskar Eustis, the artistic director of the Public theater, and he teamed her with Julie Taymor (of Lion King fame and Spider-Man infamy). This production, unnervingly gorgeous and overwrought, considers the costs of fighting a foreign war from home.
Hathaway’s pilot wasn’t always a virtual fighter; she flew through several tours in Iraq. She feels most alive, vibrant and whole when she’s up in “the blue”. But after she was grounded by her pregnancy, she went to work with the “chair force”: a group of pilots controlling drones from the safety of BarcaLoungers while staring at a screen at “a world carved out of putty”. So blue has turned to grey. Brant has a stable of metaphors – that blue and that grey, desert sand – and he rides them hard.

Anti-Gay Bakers Being Too Nice



It's rare to hear a religious extremist attack today's icons of supposed anti-Christian persecution, but Pastor Steven Anderson is no ordinary religious extremist. As pastor of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona, last year Anderson made national headlines after promising the world an "AIDS free world by Christmas" if America would merely "execute the homos like God instructs."
Pastor Anderson, whose church at one point appeared on the Southern Poverty Law Center's list of anti-gay hate groups, is back, preaching to his congregation that, if the audio on the video below is correct, includes small children.
In this undated but recent clip, Anderson goes on a rant about Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, angered that Governor Mike Pence called for and signed into law a bill that clarifies the law cannot be used to discriminate against gay people.
Anderson mocked Pence, saying, "we don’t want anyone to misunderstand the law because we don’t want anyone to think that they don’t have to serve homos because they do." He added, "Then what is the law? What was it even for, then?"

Vote Yes in Dublin




Hundreds of marriage equality supporters held a rally on the streets of Dublin today to kick off the ‘final countdown’ to Ireland’s referendum on marriage equality.
Campaigners from all sectors across society – including teachers’ union and student union representatives and politicians – came together in Merrion Square.  ‘Every vote counts and we urge people to use their voice for a positive change in Irish society,’ Max Krzyzanowski of Noise, who organized the event, told RTÉ.  ‘This is a historic opportunity for Irish people to be on the right side of history and vote yes.’
Telling the crowd to ‘love those who were thinking about voting no into voting yes’ was host, comedian and author Tara Flynn who urged people to not be complacent, arguing the British election results showed them polls could be wrong.

Sam Smith Needs Vocal Cord Surgery



 
Openly gay British pop star Sam Smith has had great success, winning numerous awards, getting three Top 10 hits in the US, and selling millions of copies of his debut CD, In The Lonely Hour.
Sam Smith has been been out on the road, doing multiple shows, but  he's silenced - for now. The four-time Grammy winner revealed to fans on Instagram on Friday (8 May) that he will be off the stage for at least the next weeks because of a hemorrhage on his vocal cord.
'I am very upset to announce I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven't recovered and I am going to need surgery,' he writes.
Smith was forced to cancel his Australian tour because of his medical condition and will also not be able to perform on the Billboard Music Awards later this month. 'By doing this in 8 weeks time I'm gonna be able to sing like never before so it's worth it,' he wrote on Instagram. 'I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month thou, I can't speak for THREE WEEKS after the op.'

Ambassador Stephen Brady Resigns After Incident




 
Tony Abbott has been dragged into a simmering row with Ambassador to France, Stephen Brady, after his same-sex partner was reportedly asked by the Prime Minister's office to 'wait in the car' at an Anzac Day event.  It's believed Mr Brady was so incensed by the move, despite DFAT rules suggesting correct protocol was followed, that he threatened to quit.
But DFAT stipulates that an ambassador can only greet the Prime Minister with a partner if the PM is travelling with his own partner/spouse. Daily Mail Australia has sought comment from Mr Abbott's advisors.  It has also been revealed that Peter Stephens once worked for Kevin Rudd when he was Prime Minister.
Citing multiple sources, Fairfax Media's Peter Hartcher is reporting that Mr Brady was meant to greet Mr Abbott on the tarmac on Anzac Day.  He was to be accompanied on the tarmac by his partner, Mr Stephens.   But Fairfax reports that Mr Abbott's travelling party asked that Mr Stephens wait in the car instead.   However, Mr Brady reportedly rejected the instruction and the couple greeted Mr Abbott when he arrived.  After the incident, Mr Brady offered his resignation but it was reportedly rejected.

Calif. School Crowns Transgender Prom Queen



Angie Esteban hadn't heard of Bruce Jenner before the gold medal Olympian's "coming out" as a transgender woman on national television.
Now she and Jenner, a television celebrity and stepfather of the reality TV Kardashian sisters, have something in common.
Angie has had her own coming out. It's taken place over the course of the past few years, an arduous, personal journey — a girl shedding her male skin. It began slowly in middle school and gained speed as a freshman at Salinas High School.
It's been a struggle with parents, relatives, classmates, educators — and herself.
Yet a validation of who she is came April 18 when the senior became Salinas High's first transgender student to be crowned prom queen.

Writers Reuniting For New Gay-Themed Drama



10 years ago Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana won an Oscar for their script for Brokeback Mountain. Interestingly despite that success it’s the last feature writing credit for either of them (they’ve been attached to numerous projects but nothing that’s made it to the screen).  However now they’re reuniting and going back into the arena of gay-themed drama, according to Indiewire, with True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga set to direct.
The film doesn’t have a title yet, but it is ‘Based on the true story of Joe and his son Jadin Bell, a 15-year-old Oregon teen who killed himself in 2013 after suffering vicious bullying for being gay, the drama will be penned by the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” team of Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. After Jadin committed suicide, his father set out across America to promote awareness and to rally against prejudice and bullying.’
It certainly sounds like a provocative and potentially moving story and hopefully Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana can do it justice.  The film is the first that distributor A24 is developing itself, although there’s no news on when it might arrive in cinemas.

Gay Marriage in 1971



Long before the fight over same-sex marriage began in earnest, long before gay couples began lining up for marriage licenses, Jack Baker and Michael McConnell decided to wed.  The year was 1967. Homosexuality was still classified as a disorder, sodomy was illegal in nearly every state, and most gay men and lesbians lived in fearful secrecy.  But from the age of 14, eyeing young men in his father’s barbershop, Mr. McConnell dreamed of living “happily ever after” with a partner.
So when Mr. Baker (left in picture) proposed moving in together, Mr. McConnell challenged him. “If we’re going to do this,” he replied, “you have to find a way for us to get married.”  Mr. Baker remembers his initial reaction: “I had never heard of such a thing.”  He enrolled in law school to try to make it happen.
In 1970, in Minneapolis, Mr. Baker and Mr. McConnell became the first same-sex couple known to apply for a marriage license. Turned down by Hennepin County, they fought to the United States Supreme Court, where they lost their case in a one-sentence dismissal that has reverberated in federal courts and played an indirect role in pushing same-sex marriage to the high court this year.
The couple, though, did not give up. With some sleight of hand involving a legal change to a gender-neutral name, they obtained a marriage license in another county, and in 1971, in white bell-bottom pantsuits and macramé headbands, they exchanged vows before a Methodist pastor and a dozen guests in a friend’s apartment. Their three-tiered wedding cake was topped by two plastic grooms, which a friend supplied by splitting two bride-and-groom figurines.

Ireland Days Away from Gay Marriage




Irish voters are set to back the introduction of marriage equality by a margin of as much as two-to-one next week and become the first country to approve the policy in a national plebiscite, a series of polls indicated on Saturday.
Long considered one of the most socially conservative countries in western Europe, support for gay rights has surged in Ireland in recent decades as the power of the Catholic church collapsed in the wake of a series of child abuse scandals.  The Irish Times poll of 1,200 voters showed 58% planned to vote in favour of the measure compared to 25% against and 17% undecided.  Two more polls to be published in Sunday newspapers put support for the constitutional change above 60% , while a third saw the advantage of the Yes side slip to 53% with 24% opposed and almost as many undecided.
Analysts have said the fall in support in some of the polls is nowhere near as sharp as the decline in support for divorce in a 1995 referendum, when that Yes campaign’s 44 point lead disappeared as conservative campaigners spoke out in the last weeks of campaign. The measure was approved by 50.3%.
Long a taboo in a country that only decriminalised homosexuality in 1993, gay rights have been championed by all the main political parties.   The prime minister, Enda Kenny, was widely praised for appearing at a prominent gay bar last year at an event for gay members of his Fine Gael party.

US Slam Gambian President for Threat to Slit Gay Men's Throats



 
The United States have slammed Gambia’s president for his unconscionable comments on gay men in his country. According to the Human Rights Campain, Yahya Jammeh said he would slit the throats of men wanting to marry men in a public speech; a speech he gave last year also drew criticism from rights groups when the president called homosexuals ‘ungodly’ and ‘vermin’.
Susan Rice, the US National Security Advisor, did not quote Jammeh but called his comments part of an ‘alarming deterioration of the broader human rights situation’ in Gambia. She said: ‘The recent unconscionable comments by Gambian President Yahya Jammeh underscore why we must continue to seek a world in which no one lives in fear of violence or persecution because of who they are or whom they love.‘
According to Rice, the US are ‘concerned’ about rights violation in Gambia and ‘credible reports’ of torture, ‘arbitrary detention at the government’s hands’ and missing US citizens. Following reports on a crackdown against the country’s LGBTI community, the US revoked trade preferences with Gambia last year; Rice warned of the US taking additional action to respond to the situation.

Man Charged Over Death of Trans Woman in London




 
A man has been charged with the killing of a trans woman that was believed to be a US model and escort working in London. Joaquin Gomez-Hernandez, 23, will appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court today (17 May).
Vanessa Santillan, a 33-year-old originally from Miami, Florida, was found strangled and beaten on 28 March. It was reported that she had come to London from Mexico. Her parents are said to have been left 'devastated' by the loss of their daughter.

Straight Catholic Priest Sacked for Supporting Gay Rights



A Catholic priest has said he was sacked for supporting LGBTI rights.  Reverend Warren Hall, who used to work at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, posted a message on Facebook supporting the NO H8  campaign.
'I've been fired from SHU for posting a pic on FB supporting LGBT "NO H8",' he said on Twitter.  'I'm sorry it was met with this response. I'll miss my work here.
It came as the university’s basketball team recruited Derrick Gordon, the first openly gay Division I men’s basketball player.
Students are now petitioning for him to be reinstated as the university's director of campus ministry. It has attracted more than 1,000 signatures.  The change.org petition states: ‘This action is not in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ, nor is it line with the words of Pope Francis, current leader of the Roman Catholic Church."

Ireland Says "Yes"!



Tom Curran, from the governing Fine Gael party and who has a gay son, said it was the happiest day of his life.  Gerry Adams, the president of the opposition Sinn Fein party, said it was "a good day for equality and Ireland".  Campaigners against gay marriage have expressed disappointment but some offered their congratulations.  Mr Curran, the Fine Gael General Secretary, said: "We have gone back to the old values of decency and honesty and treating everybody as the same.  So I tonight will go to bed knowing that my son is now treated the same as my other two sons and my daughter."
Ireland's Health Minister Leo Varadkar, the country's first openly gay cabinet minister, called the referendum a "social revolution".  Irish celebrities have been adding their voices too, including comedian Dara O Briain and talk show presenter Graham Norton.
Among the 'no' campaigners, Senator Ronan Mullen said he was disappointed but added, "There's a lot of goodness in why people were voting 'yes' and why people were voting 'no'".  Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin said the Catholic Church would need a "reality check" after the vote.  "It's clear that if the referendum is an affirmation of the views of young people, the Church has a huge task in front of it," he said.  David Quinn of the Iona Institute, a Catholic think-tank said it had been an impressive victory for the 'yes' side.

Eugene Onegin Meets Brokeback Mountain in Munich




I have seen productions of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin that were brightly colored and productions in bleak grays. I have seen 1820s settings and contemporary settings. One thing has been consistent: the opera is the story of Onegin’s and Tatyana’s mistimed passions for each other. Krzysztof Warlikowski’s staging for the Bayerische Staatsoper works from a different premise: Onegin is gay. It’s an interesting and coherent concept – presumably inspired by Tchaikovsky’s own homosexuality – and there are moments when it makes the drama onstage wonderfully novel and exciting, but too often it fights the music and the text.
Warlokowski’s take on the opera is bold, and it makes the Lensky—Onegin relationship exciting and moving. However, so much of the first and third acts focus on Tatyana that the opera loses a lot if her passion seems ungrounded (and unreturned, whatever lies Onegin may tell himself). The singers’ strong voices and committed acting weren’t quite enough to fight the dramatic impulses of the text and music. This production holds together and provokes thought, but it doesn’t entirely convince.

Jim, a terrified Irish man, brings disturbing news. He warned Cork's 96FM listeners that none-other than Satan Himself guided the Irish people in their overwhelming Yes Vote for marriage equality on Friday — and now Ireland will pay the price.
"The victory of the Yes side in the same-sex referendum was not the people's victory, it was Satan's victory," began Jim's post-referrendum analysis. "God gave us a test, a chance to show the world we belong to him before he corrects the world, probably before the end of the year."
Jim went on to warn that this "correction" will come in the form of a divinely-targeted, anti-sodomitic asteroid.
Is that not the voice of a truly-terrified Irish man? If Jim turns out to be a bit, he's a brilliant player. It's a minor miracle that radio hosts Deirdre O'Shaughnessy and PJ Coogan didn't totally crack up. They'd attempted to so-every-kindly reason with him, but Jim's superstitions didn't go for that. He's convinced.
"Forty million people will die in this correction," Jim predicted with bold specificity, before offering a followup prediction. "If the people don't come back to [God] after that correction, he will take out ... three-quarters of the world's population."

On paper, no one can disagree that Mike Pence is a Hoosier if ever there were one. Born and raised in Columbus, Indiana, Pence earned his undergraduate degree from an Indiana private, Presbyterian liberal arts college and his law degree from Indiana University. He worked for an Indiana think tank, had a gig as an Indiana radio talk show host, served the people of Indiana as a U.S. Congressman, and then, as their governor.
Indiana is a conservative state. Gallup ranks it number 21, with number one, Mississippi, being the most conservative. Mitt Romney won the state over Barack Obama by ten points.   In January, Hoosiers gave their beloved governor a 66 percent approval rating. That's pretty huge. In February, that dropped a bit, to 62 percent.  In a new poll commissioned by the Human Rights Campaign and conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, Hoosiers now give their Republican governor an approval rating of just 39 percent.  That's a 23 point plunge from February, and a 27 point drop from January.
"As you may have heard, Governor Mike Pence recently signed into law the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which (Some people say) allows business owners to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and (Other people say) protect business owners from acting against their own religious beliefs," Indiana voters were told in the poll. "Generally speaking, do you have a favorable or unfavorable impression of Governor Mike Pence for signing this bill into law?," they were then asked.

On Same-Sex Marriage, Catholics Are Leading the Way



Take a look at this list of countries: Belgium, Canada, Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Brazil, France, Uruguay, Luxembourg and Ireland. Name two things that they have in common.  They don’t share a continent, obviously. Or a language.  But in all of them, the Roman Catholic Church has more adherents, at least nominally, than any other religious denomination does.  And all of them belong to the vanguard of 20 nations that have decided to make same-sex marriage legal.
In fact, countries with a Catholic majority or plurality make up half of those where two men or two women can now wed or will soon be able to.  Ireland, obviously, is the freshest addition to the list. It’s also, in some ways, the most remarkable one. It’s the first country to approve same-sex marriage by a popular referendum. The margin wasn’t even close. About 62 percent of voters embraced marriage equality.  And they did so despite a past of great fealty to the Catholic Church’s official teachings on, for example, contraception, which was outlawed in Ireland until 1980, and abortion, which remains illegal in most circumstances.
Irish voters nonetheless rejected the church’s formal opposition to same-sex marriage. This act of defiance was described, accurately, as an illustration of church leaders’ loosening grip on the country.  But in falling out of line with the Vatican, Irish people are actually falling in line with their Catholic counterparts in other Western countries, including the United States.   They aren’t sloughing off their Catholicism — not exactly, not entirely. An overwhelming majority of them still identify as Catholic. But they’re incorporating religion into their lives in a manner less rooted in Rome.  We journalists too often use “the Catholic Church” as a synonym for the pope, the cardinals and teachings that have the Vatican’s stamp of approval.

David Harbour's past film credits include Kinsey, Brokeback Mountain, War of The Worlds, and End of Watch.  Now, he's just been cast along side T.I., Dermot Mulroney, Scoot McNairy and Jamie Foxx and Michelle Monaghan in Sleepless Night, an action thriller that will be directed by Baran bo Odar.
Written by Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center, Straight Outta Compton), Sleepless Night centers on Vincent Downs (Foxx), a seemingly corrupt Las Vegas cop. When gangsters (Mulroney, McNairy) kidnap his son as ransom for a shipment of cocaine he stole, Downs races to save his child's life without getting caught by Internal Affairs and before the mobsters discover that he's actually lost the goods. Monaghan plays an Internal Affairs agent investigating Downs who ultimately has to decide which side of the law he's on, while T.I. plays Downs' partner.  Gabrielle Union already boarded the project in a supporting role.
The Open Road film begins shooting June 15 in Atlanta and Las Vegas.  "We are thrilled with the group of talented actors we have assembled for the supporting cast," said Peter Lawson, executive vp production and acquisitions at Open Road. "Very excited for Bo and the team to get the cameras rolling in the next few weeks."

It was never an option for me to not be out. And, I don't really make a big thing of talking about it because I feel like it's a non-issue for me, personally. I feel like I am who I am, and why would I hide it? But I also think that it's definitely important, particularly for young gay people to have role models, or to see that it's okay to be out and have a wonderful life.

The reward of the theatre is that sexuality is celebrated; I mean it's basically a huge pride march. It's a safe haven for people to be whoever they want to be on or off stage. Whatever you might think or whatever you thought you knew before, the person that is on the cover of Vanity Fair identifies as and is a woman. So, if you were to refer to Caitlyn as a man or using male pronouns or using a name that she no longer identifies with, that damages her.
It might seem like a trivial thing, but this is about more than a star of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. This is about the kids who are hoping to transition one day: they're seeing the media and public attention surrounding Caitlyn and they are going to be affected by it. So it is up to you to whether you're going to help build them up or tear them down, and hopefully this guide will help.

Clothes Were Stolen During Hookup



 
A gay man was seen running naked through the main gay street in Manchester after his clothes were stolen during a hookup. Greater Manchester Police have said it is believed the victim met a man at a nearby gay bar and walked together to the towpath near Canal Street, the centre of the gay village in the English city.
By the canal, the victim willingly removed his suit and underwear and left his wallet, phone and keys at the waterside. But then, his date grabbed his belongings and fled. The naked man, not knowing what to do, ran towards the New Union Hotel.
On his way there, a passerby called 999. When police arrived at the scene, the victim told them all of his clothes and possessions were stolen. The offender was described as white, between 20 and 25 years old, and wearing a black tracksuit. City centre inspector Phil Spurgeon said to Manchester Evening News that 'this isn't about blaming the victim', but it should serve as a cautionary tale. 'It’s a reminder to be aware of your surroundings and thinking about putting yourself in an obviously vulnerable position,' he said.

Jennifer Hudson's New Video Supports Gay Marriage




 
Jennifer Hudson earned national attention when she became a finalist on the TV show American Idol.  She went on to finish 7th, and then earned the spot of Effie White in Dreamgirls, with many saying she stole the spotlight from Beyoncé.   She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, an NAACP Image Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She has also appeared in such films as Sex and the City (2008), The Secret Life of Bees (2008) and Winnie Mandela (2013).
As for her recording career, since 2008 Jennifer has earned 8 Top 30 R&B hits.  Her newest album is soon to be released, and the lead single is "I Still Love You".
While the lyrics of the song are about trying to convince a lost love to return, Jennifer opted to make a video that would show support for gay marriage, and tells the story of a gay man who leaves a message for his estranged father on the eve of his wedding to his partner, ending the call with "and despite everything, I still love you."
Jennifer Hudson has long been an outspoken supporter of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Joking that she is "a queen on the inside, too," Hudson told The Advocate last year, "The gay community has meant so much to me throughout my life, and there have been many gay people who have been positive influences for me, From my best friend to many of my teachers, my first producer, and more — there have been so many. That’s why I feel like this campaign is a perfect fit, because it’s something I’m fully supportive and passionate about."

GOP - All Hell Breaking Loose



As the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage bans looms, the GOP (Grand Old Party - Republicans) has begun their assault on reason and intellect with the standard dire warnings, threats, and fear mongering in the form of corporate boycotts and revolt. As usual, their claims include flagrant misinterpretations of their favorite documents, the Constitution and the Bible, as well as an assumption that no one will either read up on or bother to revisit history.
Earlier this week, Franklin Graham, son of evangelist Billy Graham, in an unfortunate choice of words, suggested that homosexuality is being "crammed down [the] throats" of Christians, noting that Tiffany's & Co is "advertising wedding rings for gay couples." Graham is calling for a boycott of the jeweler and Wells Fargo, both of which apparently use same-sex couples in their ads. Ironically, he posted his outrage on Facebook, whose CEO and founder, Mark Zuckerberg, marched alongside his employees in 2013 in San Francisco Pride.
It would appear that Scott Walker and Ted Cruz are treading the same homophobic path, both recently announcing the prospect of a constitutional amendment either defining marriage in the GOP's terms, as one man and one woman, or leaving it up to individual states to define marriage or allow it.
"The decision on defining marriage should be left up to the states," Walker said.
Cruz has gone so far as to introduce legislation to establish a constitutional amendment protecting states that want to bar same-sex marriage.

Matt Levett Wins 7th Annual Heath Ledger Scholarship



Actor and filmmaker Matt Levett  (pictured left) has won the 2015 Heath Ledger Scholarship, Australians in Film announced.  Emilie Cocquerel and Lily Sullivan were named this year's runners-up.
"It was inspiring to be on a judging panel where every person was passionate and invested in the result. The decision was not easy as each of the applicants are talented and unique and we are sure they will have long and lovely careers," said casting director Laray Mayfield, who was a judge on the panel that chose who best deserved the grant. "Ultimately, our decision was to award the scholarship to Matt Levett. We are all excited about watching his talent and career continue to grow and we are also looking forward to seeing the work the runners-up Emilie Cocquerel and Lily Sullivan will do."
Each year, Ledger's father Kim, patron of the scholarship, contacts the winner to advise them that they have won.
"It is always such an exciting phone call to make because we know that the scholarship makes such an impact on a young performer's career," Ledger said. "For the seventh year, the scholarship has gone to a deserving recipient in Matt Levett. This is a wonderful initiative run by Australians in Film and we wish Matt every success."

A Canberra couple is threatening to divorce if same-sex marriage is legalised in Australia, but Nick and Sarah Jensen, who have just celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary, will continue to live together and refer to each other as husband and wife.
'As Christians, we believe marriage is not a human invention,' Mr Jensen wrote in the Canberra City News on Thursday.  The couple view marriage as a fundamental order of creation and part of God's intimate story for human history.  'My wife and I, as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognise the government's regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnisation of same-sex couples,' Mr Jensen said.  'If parliament voted to change the timeless and organic definition of marriage, it would have moved against the fundamental and foundational building block of Australian society and, indeed, human culture everywhere.  'Indeed, it raises a red flag when a government decides it is not content only having sovereignty over land, taxes and the military, but words themselves.  'By changing the definition of marriage it would, in years to come, have an altogether different sense and purpose, Mr Jensen said.

 Calling it a “flippant, fit-of-pique publicity stunt,” an Australian woman brutally disinvited a Christian couple from her own non-gay wedding, after they claimed they would get divorced if gays were allowed to wed.
Writing at NewsAU.com,  Annie Hagar wrote that she and her fiance have known for Nick Jensen and his wife Sarah for over ten years, attending their wedding although with different partners at the time. While she had previously invited the Christian couple to her upcoming wedding, his “publicity stunt” announcement caused her to change her mind, particularly when Jensen texted her fiance afterward asking him if they were still invited.
After wavering a bit, Hagar and her partner decided to teach their high school friend a lesson, with Hagar writing, “My fiance and I have decided the best thing to do is to make sure Nick understands how little he and his twisted world view matters. Couples all over the world of mixed race, mixed religion and now, at least in some countries, the same sex, enjoy a married life their forebears could not have dreamt would one day happen — and Nick and Sarah’s sham divorce will have zero impact on their lives. None.”
As to the “sham divorce,” Hagar delivered a devastating beat-down on Nick Jensen’s “crappy googling” skills, pointing out that getting a divorce in Australia isn’t as easy as jumping “back over their broomstick.”

The archconservative presidential hopeful tells CNN he'd welcome Jenner's endorsement but hedges on general acceptance of transgender people.
Ultraconservative and generally anti-LGBT politician Rick Santorum is still hedging about whether he supports Caitlyn Jenner’s gender transition, but he would nonetheless be happy to have her endorsement in the presidential election.
When Jenner, the former Olympic athlete once known as Bruce Jenner, came out as a transgender woman, she also revealed she’s a Republican, and many have wondered if she’ll find acceptance in the party. Thursday night, CNN’s Erin Burnett asked Santorum, a former U.S. senator who’s seeking the Republican presidential nomination, if he welcomes Jenner to the GOP. This came after she played a clip of another contender for the nomination, Sen. Lindsey Graham, saying he’s happy to have Jenner in the party.
“If Caitlyn Jenner wanted to endorse me, would I accept the endorsement?” Santorum responded. “The answer is, if that’s the way she feels about my candidacy, sure.”
But when Burnett pressed Santorum on whether he accepts Jenner herself as well as her endorsement and vote, he fell back on boilerplate language. “My job as a human being is to treat everybody with dignity and respect,” he said.

Gay Marriage in Mexico




 
Mexico's Supreme Court has effectively legalized same-sex marriage. The highest court in the country has found state laws that restricted marriage only to heterosexual couples were discriminatory.
Out of the 31 states, Mexico City, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Quintana Roo are the only ones to recognize marriage equality. Under a previous ruling, other states must recognize marriages performed in these four.
'As the purpose of matrimony is not procreation, there is no justified reason that the matrimonial union be heterosexual, nor that it be stated as between only a man and only a woman,' the Supreme Court. 'Such a statement turns out to be discriminatory in its mere expression.'   But this does not mean every state ban against same-sex marriage has been struck down, it allows gay couples denied marriage in their state to seek injunctions against district judges. When they have enough injunctions, the court will formally order state legislatures to lift their bans.

 Jeb Bush has launched his campaign to be president today (15 June). The son of former President George H. W. Bush and brother of former President George W. Bush, he appears to be eschewing his dynastic name with a logo which reads only: 'Jeb!'
The former Florida governor will officially enter the race with a speech and rally this afternoon, at Miami Dade University in Florida. 'My core beliefs start with the premise that the most vulnerable in our society should be in the front of the line and not the back,' Bush says in a video which is to be aired before the announcement speech, reported by ABC news. 'What we need is new leadership that takes conservative principles and applies them so that people can rise up.'
Although he is a frontrunner for the Republican nomination, the 62-year-old will face tough competition from other candidates. A CNN/ORC opinion poll, released earlier this month, found him virtually tied with Floridian senator Marco Rubio. Behind them, 10% of respondents said they supported Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Also in the race are ultra-conservative Rick Santorum and libertarian Rand Paul.
Things could be made even more difficult for Bush, as a gay couple in Portland, Oregon are refusing to give up the domain name they bought back in 2008. CJ Phillips and Charlie Rainwater purchased JebBushForPresident.com when rumors began that the politician might run for president.

 Kate Mara was always the actress you’d recognise on screen but couldn’t quite work out where you’d seen her before, but not any more. University of Wyoming & Out West



The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming, which houses several significant collections related to slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is currently developing “Out West in the Rockies,” a first-of-its-kind regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and culture archive of the American West.
The archive will welcome collections from eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Retiring AHC Director Mark Greene helped inaugurate and Associate Director Rick Ewig will oversee this effort. Gregory Hinton, creator of Out West, an acclaimed national LGBT western museum program series, introduced the concept to the AHC and serves as project consultant. Hinton announced Out West in the Rockies at the LGBQT Alliance luncheon during the recent American Alliance of Museums annual meeting and museum expo in Atlanta.
Through BayCityJohn, Gregory Hinton has reached out to the fourm, to get the word out, and ask for any help that members would be willing to give him.

Over 300,000 Rally in Rome Against Gay Marriage




Hundreds of thousands of people travelled from all over Italy and Europe yesterday to protest against the proposed legalization of gay marriage, and the teaching of ‘gender theories’ in schools.  Gathering in the San Giovanni Square in Rome, with estimates of participants running from 300,000 to a million people, the protest put the ‘anti-Austerity’ protests held in London on the same day to shame, for sheer volume of people and absence of criminal behavior.  Attendees held aloft banners reading “The family will save the world” and “Let’s defend our children”, as Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi tries to push a civil union bill through parliament.
“In my children’s schools they are talking about families made up of two fathers or two mothers, without asking parents’ permission,” said 41-year old doctor Giuseppe Ripa, adding: “It’s dangerous and wrong.”  Fellow protester Piero Uroda, a 78-year-old pharmacist, said it was “not honest to say these things to the very young, it’s not like they are students who can debate these ideas. I don’t want gay marriage or gay adoption, the natural family is like ours”.
The call for Italy to keep pace with its western European neighbors on the issue has grown stronger since Ireland voted overwhelmingly in favor of gay marriage last month.

Austria and Gay Marriage



 
The National Assembly of Austria has taken a strong stance against equal marriage yesterday (18 June).  Two days before Vienna Pride, the Assembly voted against a proposed resolution to grant lesbian and gay couples ‘the human right of equal marriage’.  Out of 136 representatives, only 26 voted for and 110 against the proposal in a roll-call vote; the Green party, who proposed the resolution, was the only party to fully support marriage equality.
On Tuesday, in light of the opening of Vienna’s Pride Village, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), coalition partner to the conservative Austrian People’s Party, demanded equality for all – now their representatives voted against marriage equality.
‘The SPÖ’s deepest conviction are equal marriage rights for homosexual people,’ said party whip Andreas Schieder during a discussion about the resolution.
‘We demand full equality. Right now, such a resolution – even supported by the SPÖ – wouldn’t get a majority.  ‘Which is why we will continue to work on convincing conservative forces that these are life realities and discrimination cannot have a place.’

In a recent article for the Huffington Post ex-soldier James Wharton remembers how the Prince defended him from an attack. In 2008, he was targeted by other soldiers for his sexuality.
‘ had got a little close to a soldier from another regiment whilst drinking in the bar. ‘Word had got round among the other regiment about what had happened between me and one of their own, and a group of angry sergeants wanted my blood - because to them, I was obviously to blame.' He told Prince Harry - his commander - who angrily said he would sort the issue, 'once and for all'. ‘Harry confronted the older non-commissioned officers, and made, quite clear, that they would be for the high jump if they gave me another second's hassle over the issue - my sexuality.’
Prince Harry retired from army life on Friday. Wharton says he was a firm but compassionate leader, and that: ‘He got us - and we got him.’

NOM, The Republicans, and "The Pledge"



The National Organization for Marriage wants Republicans running for the White House to know what needs to be done to gain its support.
The anti-gay marriage group issued a 5 point pledge this past week to the GOP presidential candidates. The document mirrors what NOM expected from the party in 2012. The first point is to support a constitutional amendment 'protect[ing] marriage as the union of one man and one woman.' The second is aimed at the Supreme Court. Any decisions the nine-justices passed supporting marriage equality need to be fought and overturned. This includes nominating judges 'who are committed to restraint and applying the original meaning of the Constitution.'
Any executive orders from President Barack Obama that 'have the effect of undermining marriage' must be overturned. This includes blocking 'the promotion of a redefined version of marriage in public schools and other government entities.' There is also a call for the support of the First Amendment Defense Act. This bill, supported by Senator Mike Lee, protects people, organizations, and business who define marriage as the union between a man and a woman. Lastly, NOM wants the Department of Justice to investigate harassment opposite-sex marriage supporters have endured.
As of today, 20 June, no candidate has singed the pledge. However, NOM President Brian Brown wants them to know there will be consequences if the group is ignored. 'We are [only] going to support he candidates that stand up and sign the pledge.' Brown said to CNN, according to Think Progress.

Linda Cardellini Cast In ‘The Founder'



Linda Cardellini's star continues to rise, and she has been cast to co-star in another movie.
She got her start with Freaks And Geeks, and went on to appear in films like Legally Blonde and Brokeback Mountain (as waitress Cassie).  The latest film on her resumé is The Founder, the biopic about the man behind the fast food chain, McDonald’s.
Cardellini will play Joan, the third wife of Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), the Illinois salesman who turned the McDonald brothers’ drive-through business into a national franchise. When she met Kroc, Joan was the attractive wife of a successful restaurant owner in Minneapolis who represented greener pastures.
Cardellini is onscreen in Avengers: Age Of Ultron and stars on Netflix’s Bloodline and is next up co-starring in Paramount’s Daddy’s Home opposite Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg which comes out Christmas Day. She also reprised her Mad Men role as Sylvia Rosen in the drama’s final season. She is repped by ICM Partners and Mosaic.

Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage in All 50 States



States cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions, the Supreme Court says in a ruling that for months has been the focus of speculation. The decision was 5-4.
Justice Anthony Kennedy, seen as a pivotal swing vote in the case, wrote the majority opinion. All four justices who voted against the ruling wrote their own dissenting opinions: Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
"They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law," Kennedy wrote of same-sex couples in the case. "The Constitution grants them that right."
Comparing the ruling to other landmark decisions, NPR's Nina Totenberg says, "This is probably right up there with Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade — if you like it or hate it — and today, Obergefell v. Hodges. This was a historic moment."
Speaking at the White House, President Obama praised the Supreme Court's ruling, saying it arrived "like a thunderbolt" after a series of back-and-forth battles over same-sex marriage.  Obama says the ruling "will strengthen all of our communities" by offering dignity and equal status to all same-sex couples and their families.  The president calls the ruling "a victory for America."

In the fall of 1987, a package arrived on the desk of Laurence H. Tribe, a Harvard law professor who had just lost a Supreme Court case on gay rights. It contained the legal opinions of Anthony M. Kennedy, a strait-laced, conservative Republican jurist from Sacramento who hardly seemed sympathetic to that cause.
The package was sent by one of the most influential men in the California capital then, Gordon Schaber, a law school dean who had enlisted a young Mr. Kennedy to teach night classes and nurtured his career. Now Mr. Schaber was angling for President Ronald Reagan to elevate his friend to the Supreme Court — and he wanted the Harvard professor’s support.
“Gordon Schaber said that Tony Kennedy was entirely comfortable with gay friends,” said Professor Tribe, who later testified to urge the Senate to confirm Justice Kennedy. “He said he never regarded them as inferior in any way or as people who should be ostracized, and I did think that was a good signal of where he was on these matters.”
Now, as the Supreme Court prepares to rule on whether to grant a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, Justice Kennedy, a onetime altar boy, has emerged as an unlikely gay rights icon. At 78, he has advanced legal equality for gays more than any other American jurist, making his friend Mr. Schaber, who died in 1997 — and who was, many who knew him believe, a closeted gay man — look prescient.

Following the U.S. Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage, Yahoo News presents a new 30-minute documentary, “Uniquely Nasty: The U.S. Government’s War on Gays,” reported and narrated by chief investigative correspondent Michael Isikoff. The film explores a dark and little-known chapter in America’s recent political past, when gays and lesbians were barred from working for the federal government and the FBI, through its“sex deviates” program, secretly collected hundreds of thousands of files on the sex lives of American citizens.
“Uniquely Nasty” includes never-before-seen government memos by legendary FBI director J. Edgar Hoover (read by George Takei) and John Steele, a top lawyer for the U.S. Civil Service Commission (read by Matt Bomer) asserting that gays were “not suitable” for federal employment. “Uniquely Nasty” is divided into three chapters.
Along with the film, Yahoo News is releasing for the first time in their entirety a cache of long-secret government memos that have been uncovered in recent years by Francis, working with a team of lawyers from the firm of McDermott Will & Emery. Also included in this package are stories about the history of the FBI’s “sex deviates” program; a profile of Robert Gray, a gay Republican lobbyist and Washington powerbroker who secretly lived in fear of the FBI; a story about how Watergate hero Archibald Cox, in his days as John F. Kennedy’s solicitor general, sought to bar gays from federal employment; and the role of “Advise and Consent” in intimidating gays in politics, such as former congressman Barney Frank, from leaving the closet.

University of Wyoming & Out West



The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming, which houses several significant collections related to slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is currently developing “Out West in the Rockies,” a first-of-its-kind regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and culture archive of the American West.
The archive will welcome collections from eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Retiring AHC Director Mark Greene helped inaugurate and Associate Director Rick Ewig will oversee this effort. Gregory Hinton, creator of Out West, an acclaimed national LGBT western museum program series, introduced the concept to the AHC and serves as project consultant. Hinton announced Out West in the Rockies at the LGBQT Alliance luncheon during the recent American Alliance of Museums annual meeting and museum expo in Atlanta.

Ang Lee and James Schamus Reflect on 'Brokeback Mountain'



Variety's Marriage Equality issue profiles the role Hollywood has played in promoting gay rights, following the historic gay marriage ruling in the US. Director Ang Lee and producer James Schamus reflect on 'Brokeback Mountain', a decade after it was made.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain, which made history as the first gay romance to cross over into the mainstream, eventually grossing US$178 million worldwide. Nearly a decade later, it's still the most successful same-sex love story that Hollywood has ever produced.
The film's director Ang Lee and producer James Schamus spoke to 'Variety' in separate conversations about their memories of the movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as closeted cowboys.

Late actor Heath Ledger based his famous role as a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain on his “homophobic gay“ uncle, according to the film’s director Ang Lee.
As the Oscar-winning film reaches its tenth anniversary, Lee and the film’s producer, James Schamus, have reminisced about the casting and the making of the film.
Lee has told Variety.com that Ledger looked to his family for inspiration for his gay character Ennis Del Mar.
“Heath came in and wanted to do it right away. I think he told me that he learned from one of his uncles, who is also a very macho, homophobic gay, much like Ennis, and also a rancher,” Lee told Variety.
When Schamus met Ledger, he was a little awestruck and tried to act out a scene from the upcoming film.

Celebrating its sixth year in 2015, The Loft Film Fest (located in beautiful Tucson, Arizona) is dedicated to showcasing the best independent, foreign and classic films, as well as celebrating the work of established and emerging directors, writers, producers and actors. The Loft Film Fest, through its eclectic and diverse programming, aims not only to expand the audience for cinema that challenges, inspires and entertains, but also to honor those artists whose talent and passion bring that cinema to life.
Described by Filmmaker Magazine as being “geared truly toward cinephiles of nearly every stripe,” and praised for its “phantasmagorical programming … and astute choice of guests,” The Loft Film Fest was created in 2010 as a showcase for the very best independent, foreign and classic cinema. For five days in October, The Loft Film Fest provides an intimate and unique setting for film fans to experience hand-selected festival favorites from Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, etc., and to meet internationally-renowned artists from the world of independent cinema.
According to their Facebook page (and posted by BayCityJohn) this year's event (October 21-25) will feature both Diana Osanna and Lary McMurtry, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain.  A few Brokies have started to talk about going to the event.

Hillary Clinton Comforts Gay Youth on Social Media



A recent posting to the Humans of New York Facebook page has gone viral, showing Hillary Clinton's support for the gay community, and her campaign's embrace of social media.
The posting was of an unnamed boy, and underneath it was the message:  “I’m homosexual and I’m afraid about what my future will be and that people won’t like me.”
Presidential hopeful Clinton replied to the post:  “Prediction from a grown-up: Your future is going to be amazing.  You will surprise yourself with what you’re capable of and the incredible things you go on to do. Find the people who love and believe in you — there will be lots of them.”  The post was signed simply "H", which her staff has confirmed it was written by Clinton, instead of a staff member.
Clinton had made gay rights a centerpiece of her 2016 campaign.  Last month, on the eve of the Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right, she released a video, “Equal,” that featured a montage of gay couples, many of them on their wedding day.  “Being LGBT does not make you less human, and that is why gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights,” she said in the voiceover.

How Episcopalians Embraced Gay Marriage




Gene Robinson received death threats when he became the first openly gay Episcopalian bishop. Twelve years later, his church is performing gay weddings. That’s progress.
It’s hard to remember how difficult life in the Episcopal Church was for me a mere 12 years ago. In June of 2003, I had become the first openly gay priest to be elected a Bishop in historic Christianity. Not the first gay bishop, mind you, but the first one to openly say so.  Today, it is difficult to believe how panicked everyone was.
The death threats against my partner and me commenced immediately. Many within The Episcopal Church thought that our beloved Church had come loose from its biblical and theological moorings. (It hadn’t.) This controversy was going to kill us. (It didn’t.)  The Archbishop of Kenya said that when I was consecrated, the Devil entered the Church. (Hardly!)  This would cause division and strife in the Episcopal Church. (True. And sadly, some 100,000 members—out of roughly 2 million—left over this and other changes in the Church.) The Church, some said, had gone too far in its efforts to be inclusive. (In fact, we hadn’t gone far enough.)
Fast-forward only 12 years to today, when the just-concluded General Convention of the Episcopal Church opened the sacrament of marriage to gay and lesbian couples, just days after the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land. And the Church’s vote by bishops, clergy, and laity wasn’t even close. By a stunning majority, and with little rancor, the Church elected to open all the sacraments to all the baptized. We’d gone from panic over a gay bishop to affirming gay and lesbian relationships in marriage in only 12 years.

Marisa Tomei Joins Empire as a Lesbian Character




 
An Oscar winner has officially joined the second season of Fox's mega hit Empire.  Marisa Tomei is the newest A-lister to nab a recurring role on the upcoming installment of the Taraji P. Henson-led series.  The 50-year-old actress will play 'Mimi Whiteman, a demanding venture capitalist who becomes involved in Lyon family drama,' according to Deadline.
Marisa is certainly in good company joining the star-studded cast headlined by Terrence Howard, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers and Bryshere Gray.  The Empire newcomer has signed a multi-episode arc and her character will reportedly stir up some trouble between the Lyon dynasty.  'A Forbes list billionairess, Mimi is a lover of hip-hop music, social trends, high-end fashion and beautiful women,' the network described, seemingly giving away the sexual orientation of Marisa's on-screen alter ego.
Marisa won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in My Cousin Vinny in 1992. Her last TV role was the FX series Rescue Me.  She joins previously announced season 2 guest stars Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz and Magic Mike XXL star Adam Rodriguez.  Comedian Chris recently wrapped production on the show as creator Lee Daniels shared several photos from the set on his Instagram account showing Chris dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit.

Kim Ledger Interview


 
It's been seven years since Heath Ledger's sudden death shocked the world, but now his family is revealing the last words the 28-year-old ever said to them.  Kim Ledger, Heath's father, has revealed in a new interview that his daughter Kate was the last member of the family to speak to her brother before he died of an accidental drug overdose on Jan. 22, 2008.
Kim said to ABC News that Kate had spoken to the Australian actor on the phone just the night before he passed away, and even discussed his prescription drugs, which he was taking due to "an illness."   "Basically, Heath was complaining about not being able to sleep, because he was busy, he was meeting Steven Spielberg the next morning, he really needed to be bright and shiny and he was finding it difficult with a chest cold, or the chest infection to sleep," Kim said.  "So Kate was saying to him, 'well Heath, you can't take you know, sleeping tablets on top of prescription medication, you know it's not a good mixture.' And he sort of said, 'Katie, Katie, look...it'll be fine, you know, I just need to get some sleep.'
"Well they are really the last words we ever heard from Heath," said Kim. "Or at least, the last words that Kate heard. So, It was a terrible shock to us. I mean, he literally went to sleep."  Since his son's death, Kim has been an outspoken advocate for prescription drug abuse awareness, often challenging policy in Australia around the issue.

Counting For Thunder at Film Festivals!



We know it’s been forever since our last post, but we were working furiously to finally get Counting For Thunder completely finished - and it is! (Wow, did I actually just type those words??) We so appreciate all your love and support and are finally at the point where we can begin to share the film with the rest of the world. We’re beyond excited that The Rhode Island International Film Festival is hosting the World Premiere of Counting For Thunder August 4-9! With over 5,000 submissions from around the world, we consider ourselves so lucky to have made it into the running for Best Film! The festival attracts around 32,000 visitors a year so…yeehaw! The exact screening date hasn’t been set yet during that first week of August but should be sometime in the next few days.
We are also an official selection at The Columbia Gorge Film Festival in Vancouver, Washington where Counting For Thunder will screen on Thursday, August 13th, and Saturday, August 15th.
Then we will finish up the month at The North Carolina LGBT Festival in Durham where we will screen on Thursday and Friday the 20th and 21st. If you’re in the vicinity of any of these areas we would love to have you or any of your friends and family join us! There will be Q & A's with some of our cast and crew after selected screenings so please check back for more info as we get closer to each festival.
Again, we certainly wouldn’t have come this far without each and every one of you. We will of course keep you posted on any and all future screenings!

The couple had no idea what horrible anti-gay discrimination and acrimony the bakery owners, Aaron and Melissa Klein, had in store for them — simply because they are gay.
Four years earlier, the Bowman-Cryers moved from Texas to Oregon seeking an inclusive community and friendlier state. They settled into the Portland suburb of Gresham. A few years later, with marriage equality nearing, the couple hoped to adopt their foster kids, and to tie the knot!
Cryer wanted a grand wedding. Her mother came to town, and they visited a local bridal show where they noticed the Sweet Cakes by Melissa booth. They'd ordered from Melissa's Sweet Cakes once before — for Cryer's mother's wedding — and they enjoyed it. So, they scheduled a Sweet Cake tasting for the following day.
When Cryer and her mother arrived at Sweet Cakes by Melissa, Aaron Klein ushered them to his office, where he then asked for the names of the bride and groom. Told there would be two brides, he refused service right then and there. "I believe I have wasted your time," he claims to have said. "We do not do cakes for same-sex weddings."

Erin McLeod & Ella Masar Marry, and Shut Down Haters




 
Right after this year's Women's World Cup, Canadian star goalkeeper Erin McLeod married her longtime girlfriend (and teammate on the Houston Dash!), Ella Masar. Their love is not only lovely and perfect, it also followed quite the inspirational journey.
It wasn't long ago that McLeod wrote about her love for Christ, but also talked about the 'ungodly' way people live their lives, specifically homosexuals.
However, McLeod has since grown up, and come out, and recently married her partner, Ella Masar.  After the marriage, there were (of course) some negative comments posted, which got this reply:
For all the congratulations, love, and support thank you. Erin and I feel overwhelmed and blessed with everyone that has reached out... Also, to the "other" messages, thank you. Thank you for praying for me and reinforcing my own prayers because as you pray, "Lord please help Ella, allow her to see her sin for loving that woman, for respecting her, being faithful, honoring her, etc ..." Know I am saying the same thing, "my Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing me find my better half, for finding someone that strengthens my faith and allows me to be the person I always imagined. Thank you for teaching me what truly loving someone and others is all about, amen."

University of Wyoming & Out West



The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming, which houses several significant collections related to slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is currently developing “Out West in the Rockies,” a first-of-its-kind regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and culture archive of the American West.
The archive will welcome collections from eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Retiring AHC Director Mark Greene helped inaugurate and Associate Director Rick Ewig will oversee this effort. Gregory Hinton, creator of Out West, an acclaimed national LGBT western museum program series, introduced the concept to the AHC and serves as project consultant. Hinton announced Out West in the Rockies at the LGBQT Alliance luncheon during the recent American Alliance of Museums annual meeting and museum expo in Atlanta.
Through BayCityJohn, Gregory Hinton has reached out to the fourm, to get the word out, and ask for any help that members would be willing to give him.

Kate Mara Promotes Fantastic Four


 
While her character boasts powers of invisibility, there would be no blending in for Kate Mara on Saturday.  The 32-year-old was dangerously close to stealing the spotlight when she arrived in a low-cut sage green dress that put her ample assets on show.
Kate drummed up interest for the film at Sirius XM's Entertainment Weekly Radio Channel at Comic-Con beside cast mates Miles Teller, 28, Jamie Bell, 29, Toby Kebbell, 33, and Michael B. Jordan, 28.
Kate was poised to impress with her flawlessly applied makeup and chic hairdo.  The House Of Cards star beamed with her cropped strands slicked dramatically over her head, while pops of light pink blush softened the look.   Kate was certain to stand out with her bright gold bracelet as she plugged the upcoming comic book film.
While chatting with the hosts, Kate revealed she knew little about the famous franchise prior to production.  However, the good company Kate was surrounded by proved to be advantageous when she approached her role.    'I wasn't very familiar with the Fantastic Four before we started,' the actress admitted during her chat.

Scott Walker on Gayness, and Choices




Scott Walker repeatedly refuses to give straight answers on gay issues. That might sound funny but it's really not.  Today, "State of the Union" ran an interview with Gov. Walker conducted by CNN's Dana Bash.  Let's just give you the transcript so there's no question about his comments:
BASH: Do you think that being gay is a choice? 
WALKER: Oh, I mean I think -- that's not even an issue for me to be involved in. The bottom line is, I'm going to stand up and work hard for every American regardless of who they are, no matter where they come from, no matter what their background. I'm going to fight for people and no matter whether they vote for me or not.
BASH: On behalf of people is to do that properly you have to understand or at least have an opinion on who they are and where they're coming from. 
WALKER: But again, I think -- no I don't have an opinion on every single issue out there. I mean to me that's -- I don't know. I don't know the answer to that question.  So I'm just saying, I don't know what the answer to that is. And again I'm going to spend my time focused on things that I do know and what I can work on

Rick Perry Won't Back Down





Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry expanded on his beliefs on gay Boy Scout leaders Sunday, saying on Meet the Press that he didn’t think openly gay Scout leaders belonged in the Boy Scouts.
Meet the Press’ Chuck Todd asked Perry, who served as the governor of Texas from 2000 – 2015, whether his views on openly gay scout leaders had changed since 2008, when he wrote that “openly active gays, particularly advocates, present a problem. Because gay activism is central to their lives, it would unavoidably be a topic of conversation within a Scout troop. This would distract from the mission of Scouting; character building, not sex education.”
Perry said he still stood by that statement.
“I believe that scouting would be better off if they didn’t have openly gay Scout masters,” he said.
Perry also said that he would oppose a new Boy Scouts policy of allowing openly gay Scout leaders — something the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) looks poised to adopt. Earlier this month, the BSA executive committee voted unanimously to end the ban on gay and bisexual adults. If the full national BSA board ratifies the vote on July 27, Boy Scout troops and units will be free to hire openly gay or bisexual leaders if they choose.

Republicans Comparing Slavery to Same-Sex Marriage





At the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, Republican presidential candidates made it clear to social conservatives and evangelicals that they’re not going to give up their fight against same-sex marriage.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court decision last month legalizing same-sex marriage across the country, the Republican Party has been split between those who recognize that the country should accept the decision and move on, and those who will keep pushing to abolish the high court, allow states to ban same-sex marriage, or to “resist and reject judicial tyranny.”
“It was sad to see more than a few Republicans, including more than a few 2016 candidates, publicly saying it’s the law of the land, it’s settled, surrender and move on,” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said during the event. “There is something profoundly wrong when republicans running for president are reading from Barack Obama’s talking points.”
The event featured 10 presidential hopefuls interviewed by Republican political consultant Frank Luntz. Between candidates, conservative leaders invoked religion and spoke about the need for the next president to support socially conservative ideologies.

Veterans Kicked Out Of The Military May Get Help





It is estimated that more than 100,000 Americans were discharged from the military because of their sexual orientation since World War II. Even though the ban on gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members was essentially lifted with the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” back in 2011, numerous veterans are still negatively impacted by their dishonorable discharge. For example, many are disqualified from accessing certain benefits that they are entitled to. Others may not be able to claim veteran status or could find it more difficult to acquire civilian employment. Some could even be prevented from voting.
That’s why, on July 15, U.S. Representatives Mark Pocan (D-WI) and Charles Rangel (D-NY) along with U.S. Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) reintroduced the Restore Honor to Service Members Act. The proposed legislation, first introduced into the House in 2013 and the Senate in 2014, would help service members discharged solely due to their sexual orientation correct their military records to reflect their honorable service and reinstate the benefits they earned. 
“As our nation continues to make great strides toward full equality, we must also do everything possible to rectify the effects of past discriminatory policies,” said Representative Pocan. “Our veterans risked their lives for our country, and it is crucial that those discharged from the armed forces due to their sexual orientation receive the recognition and benefits they deserve. The Restore Honor to Service Members Act streamlines this process, ensuring their service is respected and valued in the eyes of our country.”

Cassopolis Congregation Stands by Fired Gay Pastor




The Rev. Benjamin David Hutchison and his longtime partner, Monty, are expected to tie the knot on the steps of the Old Courthouse.   Pastor Hutchinson has been in the spotlight lately, because he was forced to resign from his post at the Cassopolis United Methodist Church because he is gay & getting married.

And, in defiance of United Methodist Church rules, some UMC pastors will say the officiating words and the marital pronouncement at the ceremony. The UMC’s Book of Discipline, its governing document, specifically states “ceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions shall not be conducted by our ministers and in our churches.”  In several parts of the Book of Discipline, it states that homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teachings.
By Michigan law, only two officiants can actually sign the marriage certificate.
The reverend coordinating the ceremony for Hutchison could not be reached for comment Thursday.
When contacted about Hutchison’s departure from the church after 2 1/2 years, UMC Western Michigan Conference’s director of communications said, “The United Methodist Church considers all personnel matters confidential, and so we are unable to make any specific comment regarding Rev. Hutchinson.”
Meanwhile, church members continue to support Hutchison and express disappointment he will no longer be their spiritual leader.  “We lost our pastor. We lost a valuable friend and member of our church family, and we’ll miss him.  He’s a dynamic preacher with a charismatic personality. He made a positive difference in the life of so many people by counseling them in their time of need and sorrow.”

Hunky, bearded actor Jake Gyllenhaal, 34, is looking a little different these days. Best known for Brokeback Mountain  and Prince of Persia, he recently lost over 2 stone to play Louis Bloom in Nightcrawler. But take a look at him now. The ripped torso he gained for filming boxing movie Southpaw has certainly caught our eye.
Jake talks regrets, family and, we assume, a lot of hours at the gym…
Mirror:  Your transformation for Southpaw is incredible! How did you do it?
Jake G:  A lot of training. Hard training. Training like a boxer, existing like a boxer, or at least how one can to play a boxer in a movie.
Mirror:  Was it a lot of weights?
Jake G:  It was mostly about skill. I trained for five months, went to a boxing camp and immersed myself. This film was a full-on commitment. I treat all my work the same, but some films require more commitment than others and this was full-on. Especially as I hadn’t ever boxed in my life.
Mirror:  Were you happy when the physical process was over, then?
Jake G:  I’m never satisfied to say goodbye to a character, because I never feel I nail them.   I always have regrets. With regards to the physical, yes, the dedication, the time I put into it and the sacrifice, I’ll be honest, I’m not planning on doing that again any time soon.

Counting For Thunder at Film Festivals!


 We know it’s been forever since our last post, but we were working furiously to finally get Counting For Thunder completely finished - and it is! (Wow, did I actually just type those words??) We so appreciate all your love and support and are finally at the point where we can begin to share the film with the rest of the world. We’re beyond excited that The Rhode Island International Film Festival is hosting the World Premiere of Counting For Thunder August 4-9! With over 5,000 submissions from around the world, we consider ourselves so lucky to have made it into the running for Best Film! The festival attracts around 32,000 visitors a year so…yeehaw! The exact screening date hasn’t been set yet during that first week of August but should be sometime in the next few days.
We are also an official selection at The Columbia Gorge Film Festival in Vancouver, Washington where Counting For Thunder will screen on Thursday, August 13th, and Saturday, August 15th.
Then we will finish up the month at The North Carolina LGBT Festival in Durham where we will screen on Thursday and Friday the 20th and 21st. If you’re in the vicinity of any of these areas we would love to have you or any of your friends and family join us! There will be Q & A's with some of our cast and crew after selected screenings so please check back for more info as we get closer to each festival.
Again, we certainly wouldn’t have come this far without each and every one of you. We will of course keep you posted on any and all future screenings!

Obama Defends Gay Rights on Kenya Trip




 
There is perhaps no wider chasm between the United States and Africa than over the issue of gay rights. The tension was thrown into sharp relief during U.S. President Barack Obama’s trip to Kenya, the first visit of a serving U.S. President to this East African Nation. In a joint press conference with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday, following what appeared to have been a warm and productive meeting behind closed doors, Obama made it clear that the issue of gay rights in Kenya remained unresolved.
“I believe in the principle of treating people equally under the law, and that they are deserving of equal protection under the law and that the state should not discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation,”  Obama said. “I’m unequivocal on this.”
Kenyatta’s government has staunchly defended laws imposing up to 14 years in prison for homosexuality. Kenya and the United States, he said, shared many values, from a love for democracy, entrepreneurship and families.  Gay rights were not one of those values.

Review: An Extraordinary, Ordinary Girlhood in TLC’s I Am Jazz




 
It’s only coincidence that I Am Jazz  (premieres July 15) is coming to TLC shortly after 19 Kids and Counting  was forced off the same channel. But it feels like a change of era.
In May, TLC suspended the reality show about the fecund fundamentalist Duggar family–whose matriarch Michelle once warned that transgender people were child predators–after revelations that one of the Duggars’ sons had molested girls, including his sisters, when he was a teen. The network’s newest family-reality series introduces viewers—who didn’t already know her from her YouTube videos, writing, fundraising and activism—to Jazz Jennings, a soccer-loving South Florida 14-year-old who was assigned male at birth but has identified as female since she could speak. (Or, as she puts it in a children’s book she wrote: “I have a girl brain but a boy body. This is called transgender. I was born this way!”)
I Am Jazz  may be overshadowed by E!’s I Am Cait  (debuting July 26), about Caitlyn Jenner, which had the booster-rocket launch of a primetime Diane Sawyer interview, not to mention the media-bait combo of an Olympian decathlete transitioning amid reality’s royal family on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. (Jazz, at least, had dibs on the title locution; I Am Jazz  was also the title of an OWN special on her aired in 2011.) But I Am Jazz  may be most radical for how ordinary it is.

Cartoon Network's 'Steven Universe' Includes Lesbian Couple




 
A groundbreaking television show on Cartoon Network is now pushing the envelope even further by revealing that two characters on the kids program are a lesbian couple.   "Steven Universe,"  one of our favorite cartoons with heavy queer overtones follows the adventures of Steven, a young boy, who protects the universe with his magic gem powers alongside superheroes Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. In a recent episode, the show revealed that Garnet is actually a fusion of two other gem characters -- Ruby and Sapphire.
The scene to the left initially raised questions about the nature of Ruby and Sapphire's relationship. This week, co-executive producer Ian Jones-Quarterly confirmed via Twitter that the pair are, in fact, a lesbian couple.
"Steven Universe," is one of a number of kids shows that are increasingly focused on queer representation. As noted by Autostraddle, "study after study and expert after expert says that when kids see people like them positively portrayed in the media they consume, they are positively impacted, and when they don’t see that same representation, it negatively affects not only them, but how others view and treat people like them."
Most recently, Hulu premiered "The Bravest Knight That Ever Lived," a queer fairytale where the main character rescues both a princess and a prince and later gets to decide whose affectation he truly desires.

What It's Really Like to Be a Bisexual Woman




In this week's Sex Talk Realness, Cosmopolitan.com spoke to three anonymous women about what it's really like to be a bisexual female now.  See one of the questions below, and click the link to read the full interview.
What are the biggest myths about bisexual people, in your opinion?
Woman A: That we are greedy. Or that we are doing it for male attention.
Woman B: Absolutely that bisexual people are just confused and they must check the box for straight or check the box for gay. No one needs to label themselves by something that doesn't fit.
Woman C: That we are extra promiscuous. Just because I like men and women doesn't mean that I have any desire to bang every person I see walking down the street. Another huge myth is that this is just a "phase" or that I'm just "curious." Nope. There's a word for girls (and guys) who are just curious: bi-curious. I definitely know that I have an attraction toward women and men equally; there is no question about it.

Inside the Making of Southpaw



The story of Southpaw and the story of the making of Southpaw open the same way: with two men at the top of their respective games. In the film, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Billy “The Great” Hope, the reigning junior-middleweight-boxing champion with a loving wife in Rachel McAdams’s character. The film’s success story goes back to the spring of 2012, when Southpaw producer Peter Riche had achieved what few in Hollywood can these days: a movie barreling toward a greenlight.
Riche first sparked the film’s original idea, one without “vampires, robots, zombies, or explosions,” as he put it, while at lunch with his producing partner—and father—Alan Riche. (Riche senior ran a company for director John Hughes and produced Empire Records and cult classic Deep Blue Sea.) The Riches quickly sold the pitch to DreamWorks, with rapper Eminem attached to play the lead and Kurt Sutter, creator of the cult-hit TV show Sons of Anarchy, writing the script. Next, the Riches “brought in [director] Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). And then . . .” In Southpaw’s raw trailer, “then” is the moment something terrible happens to McAdams’s character, and Gyllenhaal’s Hope loses custody of his daughter. For Riche, the one-two punch came when Eminem—about six weeks before he was to start training for his role—“dropped out of the movie to go make an album. That was rough. But in this business, you don’t give up.”

Celebrating its sixth year in 2015, The Loft Film Fest (located in beautiful Tucson, Arizona) is dedicated to showcasing the best independent, foreign and classic films, as well as celebrating the work of established and emerging directors, writers, producers and actors. The Loft Film Fest, through its eclectic and diverse programming, aims not only to expand the audience for cinema that challenges, inspires and entertains, but also to honor those artists whose talent and passion bring that cinema to life.
Described by Filmmaker Magazine as being “geared truly toward cinephiles of nearly every stripe,” and praised for its “phantasmagorical programming … and astute choice of guests,” The Loft Film Fest was created in 2010 as a showcase for the very best independent, foreign and classic cinema. For five days in October, The Loft Film Fest provides an intimate and unique setting for film fans to experience hand-selected festival favorites from Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, etc., and to meet internationally-renowned artists from the world of independent cinema.
According to their Facebook page (and posted by BayCityJohn) this year's event (October 21-25) will feature both Diana Osanna and Lary McMurtry, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain.

University of Wyoming & Out West



The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming, which houses several significant collections related to slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is currently developing “Out West in the Rockies,” a first-of-its-kind regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and culture archive of the American West.
The archive will welcome collections from eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Retiring AHC Director Mark Greene helped inaugurate and Associate Director Rick Ewig will oversee this effort. Gregory Hinton, creator of Out West, an acclaimed national LGBT western museum program series, introduced the concept to the AHC and serves as project consultant. Hinton announced Out West in the Rockies at the LGBQT Alliance luncheon during the recent American Alliance of Museums annual meeting and museum expo in Atlanta.
Through BayCityJohn, Gregory Hinton has reached out to the fourm, to get the word out, and ask for any help that members would be willing to give him.

Brokeback Mountain: The 10th Anniversary of a Gay Classic




By any measure, Brokeback Mountain was a groundbreaking masterpiece. The 2005 film stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two cowboys whose secret and forbidden love affair burns through many years of their lives.
In addition to being one of the greatest love stories ever captured on film, Brokeback Mountain  introduced the world to the fact that gay cowboys and ranchers exist, even in that bastion of hypermasculinity that is the American West.
Based on the short story by Annie Proulx, the film was adapted for the screen and produced by Larry McMurtry and his longtime writing and producing partner, Diana Ossana. The two of them won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, a Golden Globe Award, and a Writers Guild of America Award (among many others) for Brokeback Mountain.

The quiet, revolutionary charge of Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, 10 years old this year, could be felt not only in the way it was embraced by cinemagoers, but in the way some attempted to neutralize its depiction of same-sex love by turning its most intimate and harrowing scene—Jack Twist’s “I wish I knew how to quit you” moment—into a joke. According to Jake Gyllenhaal, who played the charismatic Twist, that was something Heath Ledger, in particular, was acutely sensitive to. “He was extraordinarily serious about the political issues surrounding the movie when it came out,” he says. “A lot of times people would want to have fun and joke about it, and he was vehement about being serious, to the point where he didn’t really want to hear about anything that was being made fun of.”
Watched again a decade later, that “quit you” encounter on Brokeback Mountain—a culmination of the lovers’ lost years, symbolized in a desperate animal embrace—remains as charged and powerful as ever. Some of us have known someone like Ennis Del Mar, trapped in a world in which he doesn’t fit, and hopelessly incapable of seeing any alternative. Or, as Annie Proulx wrote in the short story on which the movie is based, “There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can’t fix it you’ve got to stand it.” It is Del Mar’s tragedy, and by extension Jack Twist’s, too, that he cannot bring himself to choose happiness over fear.
Many have written about the homoerotic subtext of cowboy films, but no story has been as forthright as Brokeback Mountain in reminding us that for all the celebrated machismo of the American West, there have always been men like Ennis and Jack.

It seems to be a very elaborate BBM canon fanfic, complete with maps and illustrations, that also includes the short story, the script and deleted scenes, in addition to the author's imagination.
I've only taken a brief look so far, it looks interesting. There are 162 chapters, although short.

Teen Stabbed At Jerusalem Pride Dies




 
One of the marchers stabbed at Jerusalem’s gay pride parade last week has died, police and health officials in Jerusalem said Sunday.
Shira Banki was one of six people stabbed Thursday by an attacker named by police as Yishai Shlissel, an Orthodox Jew who was released from prison just weeks ago after serving 10 years for stabbing marchers at a 2005 gay pride parade in Jerusalem.  She was 16 years old.
Shlissel was arrested immediately after the attack, according to Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his condolences to Banki’s family Sunday.  “Shira was murdered because she bravely supported the principle that each one can live their life in honor and security,”  Netanyahu said in a statement.“We will not allow this despicable killer to undermine the core values that Israeli society is based upon. We contemptuously denounce his actions of hate and violence. We will do everything in our power to bring this killer to face justice,”  the Prime Minister added.
Video aired on Israel’s Channel 10 shows what appears to be part of the attack 10 years ago: a man making quick slashing motions at people on a Jerusalem street, including one holding a rainbow flag, while others try to subdue him.
Channel 10 also aired video in the moments immediately after Thursday’s attack showing several wounded people, including a woman — her shirt bloody — who was put onto a stretcher and into an ambulance. Another woman was shown bleeding from her arm as someone applied pressure to the wound.

The first same-sex couple to marry at West Point were in a Manhattan bodega in the upscale neighborhood of SoHo on Sunday when one of them was physically attacked by a man they say threw the first punch.
"It's hard to believe that in 2015 we would have to deal with anti-gay hate crimes in soho of all places but that's what happened today,"  Larry Lennox-Choate III wrote on Facebook.  An unidentified man about 40-years old "screamed anti-gay obscenities" at the couple then punched Larry's husband, Daniel Lennox-Choate, in the face.
"The guy who screamed anti-gay obscenities at us in a bodega before sucker-punching Danny?,"  Larry, who graduated West Point in 2009, explains, "He left covered in his own blood with his tail between his legs after I handled the situation and tossed him in the street like the coward loser he is."
"The hate crimes division of the NYPD is on the case and we have full faith a positive outcome will follow,"  Larry adds. "We refuse to be victims and are thankful we can defend ourselves, but are saddened by the fact that idiots like this guy might not pick two guys who went through Plebe Boxing next time."
Daniel graduated West Point in 2007, and the couple were married in 2013.
"Aside from one fat lip and a sore punching arm, we are fine,"  the couple notes.

De Niro & Hathaway



The new trailer for The Intern is here. Nancy Meyers’ new comedy stars Anne Hathaway as the founder of an online fashion site and Robert De Niro as her 70-year-old intern. “You’ll get used to me,” Hathaway says in the film’s new trailer.
But despite their initially awkward meeting, Hathaway’s Jules Ostin runs an office fit for the modern age: an open floor plan, big windows, and an office masseuse (played by Rene Russo). She’s also quite fond of De Niro’s Ben Whittaker: “The truth is, something about you makes me feel calm. More centered or something. I could use that, obviously.” Aw.
Shot in New York last year, The Intern also stars Andrew Rannells, Adam DeVine and Nat Wolff. The comedy arrives in theaters on Sept. 25.

Counting For Thunder at Film Festivals!


We know it’s been forever since our last post, but we were working furiously to finally get Counting For Thunder completely finished - and it is! (Wow, did I actually just type those words??) We so appreciate all your love and support and are finally at the point where we can begin to share the film with the rest of the world. We’re beyond excited that The Rhode Island International Film Festival is hosting the World Premiere of Counting For Thunder August 4-9! With over 5,000 submissions from around the world, we consider ourselves so lucky to have made it into the running for Best Film! The festival attracts around 32,000 visitors a year so…yeehaw! The exact screening date hasn’t been set yet during that first week of August but should be sometime in the next few days.
We are also an official selection at The Columbia Gorge Film Festival in Vancouver, Washington where Counting For Thunder will screen on Thursday, August 13th, and Saturday, August 15th.
Then we will finish up the month at The North Carolina LGBT Festival in Durham where we will screen on Thursday and Friday the 20th and 21st. If you’re in the vicinity of any of these areas we would love to have you or any of your friends and family join us! There will be Q & A's with some of our cast and crew after selected screenings so please check back for more info as we get closer to each festival.

Don't Dress Homosexual



Fashion icon Giorgio Armani has come under fire after claiming in an interview that gay men "do not need to dress homosexual."
The 80-year-old Italian designer told the Sunday Times magazine that gay men are men "100 percent," and then noted, "When homosexuality is exhibited to the extreme -- to say, 'Ah, you know I'm homosexual,' -- that has nothing to do with me. A man has to be a man."
Armani didn't mince words when it came to women who have had plastic surgery or muscular men, regardless of their sexuality.
"A small breast does not have to become bigger," he said. Later, he added, "I don't like muscle boy. Not too much gym! I like somebody healthy, somebody solid, who looks after his body but doesn't use his muscles too much."
The remarks were quickly challenged on social media. "I'd rather be dressed in drag than spotted in Armani Xchange or any of his other vile labels," one Twitter user wrote, according to The International Business Times.  Added another user, cited by The Independent: "What a plank."

Rick Santorum is not changing his mind on LGBTI issues, no matter the kind words offered to Bruce Jenner.
According to Mediaite, the possible 2016 White House candidate, used Facebook to remind he's still a conservative.
'Many of you may have read a story published by the website BuzzFeed where I was asked for my thoughts regarding Bruce Jenner,' Santorum began.  'My comment affirmed Jenner as a person, made by God in His likeness as we all are. It was meant to express empathy not a change in public policy,' the former US senator continued.
He ended the post with the hashtag 'compassion.'
Yesterday, 2 May, Santorum was asked what he thought about Jenner's announcement he will transition to female.
'If he says he’s a woman, then he’s a woman,' Santorum said to BuzzFeed News.  'My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody,' he continued. 'Not to criticize people for who they are. I can criticize, and I do, for what people do, for their behavior.'

Maggie Gallagher Writes Letter to Supreme Court Justice Kennedy




 
Maggie Gallagher, one of the leading marriage equality foes in the US, penned an open letter to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. The essay was published on 1 May in the National Review. Many legal experts see Kennedy as the likely deciding vote in the marriage cases the country's highest court heard last week.
She starts by calling same-sex marriage advocates a force to be reckoned with.  'The forces for gay marriage are powerful. You have been their hero in the past, when gay people were not so powerful,' Gallagher begins.  'The tables are turned now, as I think is clear to everyone,' she continues. 'The LGBT community has built a powerful cultural, legal, and political movement. They are not helpless or friendless.' 
She insists that now people of faith, opposed to gay marriage, need Kennedy's 'help.'

Russian Gay Activists March Alongside 90,000 Others in Labor Day March in St Petersburg



A gay rights contingent prominently marched alongside 90,000 other activists in a massive rally on Labor Day along Nevsky Prospect, St Petersberg's main street.
The state-funded RT news site noted that the marchers were from all colors of the political spectrum, from the ruling United Russia party to Communists and various small opposition groups.
According to the report, the police intervened when controversial legislator Vitaly Milonov, who is known for his anti-gay stance, attempted to block the gay contingent from marching on the grounds of a 'gay propaganda' law he himself sponsored.
As the law prohibits distrubuting any kind of gay-related information to minors, he reportedly brought some minors among his supporters to make his case, the report quoted the Fontanka newspaper as saying.

Anne Hathaway Is Grounded


 
The nameless heroine of George Brant’s Grounded has a schedule many working mothers will recognize. She wakes up, takes her daughter to daycare, goes to her job, comes home, eats dinner with her husband, watches TV and falls asleep. Here’s the twist: the woman is a fighter pilot, and her job entails dropping missiles on military-age males, thousands of miles away. Every day, she sits in a chair at a Nevada airforce base and remotely controls a drone aircraft.
Brant’s monologue, which was seen in Edinburgh in 2013 and off-Broadway in 2014, is back, with a rather more famous figure filling out the flight suit: the Hollywood star Anne Hathaway, who pursued the role after reading a review of an earlier production. She approached Oskar Eustis, the artistic director of the Public theater, and he teamed her with Julie Taymor (of Lion King fame and Spider-Man infamy). This production, unnervingly gorgeous and overwrought, considers the costs of fighting a foreign war from home.
Hathaway’s pilot wasn’t always a virtual fighter; she flew through several tours in Iraq. She feels most alive, vibrant and whole when she’s up in “the blue”. But after she was grounded by her pregnancy, she went to work with the “chair force”: a group of pilots controlling drones from the safety of BarcaLoungers while staring at a screen at “a world carved out of putty”. So blue has turned to grey. Brant has a stable of metaphors – that blue and that grey, desert sand – and he rides them hard.

Anti-Gay Bakers Being Too Nice



It's rare to hear a religious extremist attack today's icons of supposed anti-Christian persecution, but Pastor Steven Anderson is no ordinary religious extremist. As pastor of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona, last year Anderson made national headlines after promising the world an "AIDS free world by Christmas" if America would merely "execute the homos like God instructs."
Pastor Anderson, whose church at one point appeared on the Southern Poverty Law Center's list of anti-gay hate groups, is back, preaching to his congregation that, if the audio on the video below is correct, includes small children.
In this undated but recent clip, Anderson goes on a rant about Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, angered that Governor Mike Pence called for and signed into law a bill that clarifies the law cannot be used to discriminate against gay people.
Anderson mocked Pence, saying, "we don’t want anyone to misunderstand the law because we don’t want anyone to think that they don’t have to serve homos because they do." He added, "Then what is the law? What was it even for, then?"

Vote Yes in Dublin




Hundreds of marriage equality supporters held a rally on the streets of Dublin today to kick off the ‘final countdown’ to Ireland’s referendum on marriage equality.
Campaigners from all sectors across society – including teachers’ union and student union representatives and politicians – came together in Merrion Square.  ‘Every vote counts and we urge people to use their voice for a positive change in Irish society,’ Max Krzyzanowski of Noise, who organized the event, told RTÉ.  ‘This is a historic opportunity for Irish people to be on the right side of history and vote yes.’
Telling the crowd to ‘love those who were thinking about voting no into voting yes’ was host, comedian and author Tara Flynn who urged people to not be complacent, arguing the British election results showed them polls could be wrong.

Sam Smith Needs Vocal Cord Surgery



 
Openly gay British pop star Sam Smith has had great success, winning numerous awards, getting three Top 10 hits in the US, and selling millions of copies of his debut CD, In The Lonely Hour.
Sam Smith has been been out on the road, doing multiple shows, but  he's silenced - for now. The four-time Grammy winner revealed to fans on Instagram on Friday (8 May) that he will be off the stage for at least the next weeks because of a hemorrhage on his vocal cord.
'I am very upset to announce I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven't recovered and I am going to need surgery,' he writes.
Smith was forced to cancel his Australian tour because of his medical condition and will also not be able to perform on the Billboard Music Awards later this month. 'By doing this in 8 weeks time I'm gonna be able to sing like never before so it's worth it,' he wrote on Instagram. 'I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month thou, I can't speak for THREE WEEKS after the op.'

Ambassador Stephen Brady Resigns After Incident




 
Tony Abbott has been dragged into a simmering row with Ambassador to France, Stephen Brady, after his same-sex partner was reportedly asked by the Prime Minister's office to 'wait in the car' at an Anzac Day event.  It's believed Mr Brady was so incensed by the move, despite DFAT rules suggesting correct protocol was followed, that he threatened to quit.
But DFAT stipulates that an ambassador can only greet the Prime Minister with a partner if the PM is travelling with his own partner/spouse. Daily Mail Australia has sought comment from Mr Abbott's advisors.  It has also been revealed that Peter Stephens once worked for Kevin Rudd when he was Prime Minister.
Citing multiple sources, Fairfax Media's Peter Hartcher is reporting that Mr Brady was meant to greet Mr Abbott on the tarmac on Anzac Day.  He was to be accompanied on the tarmac by his partner, Mr Stephens.   But Fairfax reports that Mr Abbott's travelling party asked that Mr Stephens wait in the car instead.   However, Mr Brady reportedly rejected the instruction and the couple greeted Mr Abbott when he arrived.  After the incident, Mr Brady offered his resignation but it was reportedly rejected.

Angie Esteban hadn't heard of Bruce Jenner before the gold medal Olympian's "coming out" as a transgender woman on national television.
Now she and Jenner, a television celebrity and stepfather of the reality TV Kardashian sisters, have something in common.
Angie has had her own coming out. It's taken place over the course of the past few years, an arduous, personal journey — a girl shedding her male skin. It began slowly in middle school and gained speed as a freshman at Salinas High School.
It's been a struggle with parents, relatives, classmates, educators — and herself.
Yet a validation of who she is came April 18 when the senior became Salinas High's first transgender student to be crowned prom queen.

Writers Reuniting For New Gay-Themed Drama



10 years ago Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana won an Oscar for their script for Brokeback Mountain. Interestingly despite that success it’s the last feature writing credit for either of them (they’ve been attached to numerous projects but nothing that’s made it to the screen).  However now they’re reuniting and going back into the arena of gay-themed drama, according to Indiewire, with True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga set to direct.
The film doesn’t have a title yet, but it is ‘Based on the true story of Joe and his son Jadin Bell, a 15-year-old Oregon teen who killed himself in 2013 after suffering vicious bullying for being gay, the drama will be penned by the Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain” team of Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. After Jadin committed suicide, his father set out across America to promote awareness and to rally against prejudice and bullying.’
It certainly sounds like a provocative and potentially moving story and hopefully Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana can do it justice.  The film is the first that distributor A24 is developing itself, although there’s no news on when it might arrive in cinemas.

Gay Marriage in 1971



Long before the fight over same-sex marriage began in earnest, long before gay couples began lining up for marriage licenses, Jack Baker and Michael McConnell decided to wed.  The year was 1967. Homosexuality was still classified as a disorder, sodomy was illegal in nearly every state, and most gay men and lesbians lived in fearful secrecy.  But from the age of 14, eyeing young men in his father’s barbershop, Mr. McConnell dreamed of living “happily ever after” with a partner.
So when Mr. Baker (left in picture) proposed moving in together, Mr. McConnell challenged him. “If we’re going to do this,” he replied, “you have to find a way for us to get married.”  Mr. Baker remembers his initial reaction: “I had never heard of such a thing.”  He enrolled in law school to try to make it happen.
In 1970, in Minneapolis, Mr. Baker and Mr. McConnell became the first same-sex couple known to apply for a marriage license. Turned down by Hennepin County, they fought to the United States Supreme Court, where they lost their case in a one-sentence dismissal that has reverberated in federal courts and played an indirect role in pushing same-sex marriage to the high court this year.
The couple, though, did not give up. With some sleight of hand involving a legal change to a gender-neutral name, they obtained a marriage license in another county, and in 1971, in white bell-bottom pantsuits and macramé headbands, they exchanged vows before a Methodist pastor and a dozen guests in a friend’s apartment. Their three-tiered wedding cake was topped by two plastic grooms, which a friend supplied by splitting two bride-and-groom figurines.

Ireland Days Away from Gay Marriage




Irish voters are set to back the introduction of marriage equality by a margin of as much as two-to-one next week and become the first country to approve the policy in a national plebiscite, a series of polls indicated on Saturday.
Long considered one of the most socially conservative countries in western Europe, support for gay rights has surged in Ireland in recent decades as the power of the Catholic church collapsed in the wake of a series of child abuse scandals.  The Irish Times poll of 1,200 voters showed 58% planned to vote in favour of the measure compared to 25% against and 17% undecided.  Two more polls to be published in Sunday newspapers put support for the constitutional change above 60% , while a third saw the advantage of the Yes side slip to 53% with 24% opposed and almost as many undecided.
Analysts have said the fall in support in some of the polls is nowhere near as sharp as the decline in support for divorce in a 1995 referendum, when that Yes campaign’s 44 point lead disappeared as conservative campaigners spoke out in the last weeks of campaign. The measure was approved by 50.3%.
Long a taboo in a country that only decriminalised homosexuality in 1993, gay rights have been championed by all the main political parties.   The prime minister, Enda Kenny, was widely praised for appearing at a prominent gay bar last year at an event for gay members of his Fine Gael party.

US Slam Gambian President for Threat to Slit Gay Men's Throats



 
The United States have slammed Gambia’s president for his unconscionable comments on gay men in his country. According to the Human Rights Campain, Yahya Jammeh said he would slit the throats of men wanting to marry men in a public speech; a speech he gave last year also drew criticism from rights groups when the president called homosexuals ‘ungodly’ and ‘vermin’.
Susan Rice, the US National Security Advisor, did not quote Jammeh but called his comments part of an ‘alarming deterioration of the broader human rights situation’ in Gambia. She said: ‘The recent unconscionable comments by Gambian President Yahya Jammeh underscore why we must continue to seek a world in which no one lives in fear of violence or persecution because of who they are or whom they love.‘
According to Rice, the US are ‘concerned’ about rights violation in Gambia and ‘credible reports’ of torture, ‘arbitrary detention at the government’s hands’ and missing US citizens. Following reports on a crackdown against the country’s LGBTI community, the US revoked trade preferences with Gambia last year; Rice warned of the US taking additional action to respond to the situation.

Man Charged Over Death of Trans Woman in London




 
A man has been charged with the killing of a trans woman that was believed to be a US model and escort working in London. Joaquin Gomez-Hernandez, 23, will appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court today (17 May).
Vanessa Santillan, a 33-year-old originally from Miami, Florida, was found strangled and beaten on 28 March. It was reported that she had come to London from Mexico. Her parents are said to have been left 'devastated' by the loss of their daughter.

Straight Catholic Priest Sacked for Supporting Gay Rights



A Catholic priest has said he was sacked for supporting LGBTI rights.  Reverend Warren Hall, who used to work at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, posted a message on Facebook supporting the NO H8  campaign.
'I've been fired from SHU for posting a pic on FB supporting LGBT "NO H8",' he said on Twitter.  'I'm sorry it was met with this response. I'll miss my work here.
It came as the university’s basketball team recruited Derrick Gordon, the first openly gay Division I men’s basketball player.
Students are now petitioning for him to be reinstated as the university's director of campus ministry. It has attracted more than 1,000 signatures.  The change.org petition states: ‘This action is not in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ, nor is it line with the words of Pope Francis, current leader of the Roman Catholic Church."

Ireland Says "Yes"!



Tom Curran, from the governing Fine Gael party and who has a gay son, said it was the happiest day of his life.  Gerry Adams, the president of the opposition Sinn Fein party, said it was "a good day for equality and Ireland".  Campaigners against gay marriage have expressed disappointment but some offered their congratulations.  Mr Curran, the Fine Gael General Secretary, said: "We have gone back to the old values of decency and honesty and treating everybody as the same.  So I tonight will go to bed knowing that my son is now treated the same as my other two sons and my daughter."
Ireland's Health Minister Leo Varadkar, the country's first openly gay cabinet minister, called the referendum a "social revolution".  Irish celebrities have been adding their voices too, including comedian Dara O Briain and talk show presenter Graham Norton.
Among the 'no' campaigners, Senator Ronan Mullen said he was disappointed but added, "There's a lot of goodness in why people were voting 'yes' and why people were voting 'no'".  Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin said the Catholic Church would need a "reality check" after the vote.  "It's clear that if the referendum is an affirmation of the views of young people, the Church has a huge task in front of it," he said.  David Quinn of the Iona Institute, a Catholic think-tank said it had been an impressive victory for the 'yes' side.

Eugene Onegin Meets Brokeback Mountain in Munich




I have seen productions of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin that were brightly colored and productions in bleak grays. I have seen 1820s settings and contemporary settings. One thing has been consistent: the opera is the story of Onegin’s and Tatyana’s mistimed passions for each other. Krzysztof Warlikowski’s staging for the Bayerische Staatsoper works from a different premise: Onegin is gay. It’s an interesting and coherent concept – presumably inspired by Tchaikovsky’s own homosexuality – and there are moments when it makes the drama onstage wonderfully novel and exciting, but too often it fights the music and the text.
Warlokowski’s take on the opera is bold, and it makes the Lensky—Onegin relationship exciting and moving. However, so much of the first and third acts focus on Tatyana that the opera loses a lot if her passion seems ungrounded (and unreturned, whatever lies Onegin may tell himself). The singers’ strong voices and committed acting weren’t quite enough to fight the dramatic impulses of the text and music. This production holds together and provokes thought, but it doesn’t entirely convince.

Jim, a terrified Irish man, brings disturbing news. He warned Cork's 96FM listeners that none-other than Satan Himself guided the Irish people in their overwhelming Yes Vote for marriage equality on Friday — and now Ireland will pay the price.
"The victory of the Yes side in the same-sex referendum was not the people's victory, it was Satan's victory," began Jim's post-referrendum analysis. "God gave us a test, a chance to show the world we belong to him before he corrects the world, probably before the end of the year."
Jim went on to warn that this "correction" will come in the form of a divinely-targeted, anti-sodomitic asteroid.
Is that not the voice of a truly-terrified Irish man? If Jim turns out to be a bit, he's a brilliant player. It's a minor miracle that radio hosts Deirdre O'Shaughnessy and PJ Coogan didn't totally crack up. They'd attempted to so-every-kindly reason with him, but Jim's superstitions didn't go for that. He's convinced.
"Forty million people will die in this correction," Jim predicted with bold specificity, before offering a followup prediction. "If the people don't come back to [God] after that correction, he will take out ... three-quarters of the world's population."

Mike Pence's Approval Ratings Crash & Burn





On paper, no one can disagree that Mike Pence is a Hoosier if ever there were one. Born and raised in Columbus, Indiana, Pence earned his undergraduate degree from an Indiana private, Presbyterian liberal arts college and his law degree from Indiana University. He worked for an Indiana think tank, had a gig as an Indiana radio talk show host, served the people of Indiana as a U.S. Congressman, and then, as their governor.
Indiana is a conservative state. Gallup ranks it number 21, with number one, Mississippi, being the most conservative. Mitt Romney won the state over Barack Obama by ten points.   In January, Hoosiers gave their beloved governor a 66 percent approval rating. That's pretty huge. In February, that dropped a bit, to 62 percent.  In a new poll commissioned by the Human Rights Campaign and conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, Hoosiers now give their Republican governor an approval rating of just 39 percent.  That's a 23 point plunge from February, and a 27 point drop from January.
"As you may have heard, Governor Mike Pence recently signed into law the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which (Some people say) allows business owners to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and (Other people say) protect business owners from acting against their own religious beliefs," Indiana voters were told in the poll. "Generally speaking, do you have a favorable or unfavorable impression of Governor Mike Pence for signing this bill into law?," they were then asked.

On Same-Sex Marriage, Catholics Are Leading the Way



Take a look at this list of countries: Belgium, Canada, Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Brazil, France, Uruguay, Luxembourg and Ireland. Name two things that they have in common.  They don’t share a continent, obviously. Or a language.  But in all of them, the Roman Catholic Church has more adherents, at least nominally, than any other religious denomination does.  And all of them belong to the vanguard of 20 nations that have decided to make same-sex marriage legal.
In fact, countries with a Catholic majority or plurality make up half of those where two men or two women can now wed or will soon be able to.  Ireland, obviously, is the freshest addition to the list. It’s also, in some ways, the most remarkable one. It’s the first country to approve same-sex marriage by a popular referendum. The margin wasn’t even close. About 62 percent of voters embraced marriage equality.  And they did so despite a past of great fealty to the Catholic Church’s official teachings on, for example, contraception, which was outlawed in Ireland until 1980, and abortion, which remains illegal in most circumstances.
Irish voters nonetheless rejected the church’s formal opposition to same-sex marriage. This act of defiance was described, accurately, as an illustration of church leaders’ loosening grip on the country.  But in falling out of line with the Vatican, Irish people are actually falling in line with their Catholic counterparts in other Western countries, including the United States.   They aren’t sloughing off their Catholicism — not exactly, not entirely. An overwhelming majority of them still identify as Catholic. But they’re incorporating religion into their lives in a manner less rooted in Rome.  We journalists too often use “the Catholic Church” as a synonym for the pope, the cardinals and teachings that have the Vatican’s stamp of approval.

David Harbour Cast In Sleepless Night



David Harbour's past film credits include Kinsey, Brokeback Mountain, War of The Worlds, and End of Watch.  Now, he's just been cast along side T.I., Dermot Mulroney, Scoot McNairy and Jamie Foxx and Michelle Monaghan in Sleepless Night, an action thriller that will be directed by Baran bo Odar.
Written by Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center, Straight Outta Compton), Sleepless Night centers on Vincent Downs (Foxx), a seemingly corrupt Las Vegas cop. When gangsters (Mulroney, McNairy) kidnap his son as ransom for a shipment of cocaine he stole, Downs races to save his child's life without getting caught by Internal Affairs and before the mobsters discover that he's actually lost the goods. Monaghan plays an Internal Affairs agent investigating Downs who ultimately has to decide which side of the law he's on, while T.I. plays Downs' partner.  Gabrielle Union already boarded the project in a supporting role.
The Open Road film begins shooting June 15 in Atlanta and Las Vegas.  "We are thrilled with the group of talented actors we have assembled for the supporting cast," said Peter Lawson, executive vp production and acquisitions at Open Road. "Very excited for Bo and the team to get the cameras rolling in the next few weeks."

What Are The Challenges and Rewards Of Being an Out Actor?



As part of Playbill.com's 30 Days of Pride initiative, we revisit a mix of Broadway actors who were asked the same question: "What are the rewards, challenges and/or surprises of being an out actor?" Some of their answers are:

It was never an option for me to not be out. And, I don't really make a big thing of talking about it because I feel like it's a non-issue for me, personally. I feel like I am who I am, and why would I hide it? But I also think that it's definitely important, particularly for young gay people to have role models, or to see that it's okay to be out and have a wonderful life.

The reward of the theatre is that sexuality is celebrated; I mean it's basically a huge pride march. It's a safe haven for people to be whoever they want to be on or off stage. I've never felt so much love living in my own skin. That sense of community makes Broadway a special place beyond the costumes and lights.

Whatever you might think or whatever you thought you knew before, the person that is on the cover of Vanity Fair identifies as and is a woman. So, if you were to refer to Caitlyn as a man or using male pronouns or using a name that she no longer identifies with, that damages her.
It might seem like a trivial thing, but this is about more than a star of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. This is about the kids who are hoping to transition one day: they're seeing the media and public attention surrounding Caitlyn and they are going to be affected by it. So it is up to you to whether you're going to help build them up or tear them down, and hopefully this guide will help.

Clothes Were Stolen During Hookup



 
A gay man was seen running naked through the main gay street in Manchester after his clothes were stolen during a hookup. Greater Manchester Police have said it is believed the victim met a man at a nearby gay bar and walked together to the towpath near Canal Street, the centre of the gay village in the English city.
By the canal, the victim willingly removed his suit and underwear and left his wallet, phone and keys at the waterside. But then, his date grabbed his belongings and fled. The naked man, not knowing what to do, ran towards the New Union Hotel.
On his way there, a passerby called 999. When police arrived at the scene, the victim told them all of his clothes and possessions were stolen. The offender was described as white, between 20 and 25 years old, and wearing a black tracksuit. City centre inspector Phil Spurgeon said to Manchester Evening News that 'this isn't about blaming the victim', but it should serve as a cautionary tale. 'It’s a reminder to be aware of your surroundings and thinking about putting yourself in an obviously vulnerable position,' he said.

Jennifer Hudson's New Video Supports Gay Marriage




 
Jennifer Hudson earned national attention when she became a finalist on the TV show American Idol.  She went on to finish 7th, and then earned the spot of Effie White in Dreamgirls, with many saying she stole the spotlight from Beyoncé.   She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, an NAACP Image Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She has also appeared in such films as Sex and the City (2008), The Secret Life of Bees (2008) and Winnie Mandela (2013).
As for her recording career, since 2008 Jennifer has earned 8 Top 30 R&B hits.  Her newest album is soon to be released, and the lead single is "I Still Love You".
While the lyrics of the song are about trying to convince a lost love to return, Jennifer opted to make a video that would show support for gay marriage, and tells the story of a gay man who leaves a message for his estranged father on the eve of his wedding to his partner, ending the call with "and despite everything, I still love you."
Jennifer Hudson has long been an outspoken supporter of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Joking that she is "a queen on the inside, too," Hudson told The Advocate last year, "The gay community has meant so much to me throughout my life, and there have been many gay people who have been positive influences for me, From my best friend to many of my teachers, my first producer, and more — there have been so many. That’s why I feel like this campaign is a perfect fit, because it’s something I’m fully supportive and passionate about."

GOP - All Hell Breaking Loose



As the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage bans looms, the GOP (Grand Old Party - Republicans) has begun their assault on reason and intellect with the standard dire warnings, threats, and fear mongering in the form of corporate boycotts and revolt. As usual, their claims include flagrant misinterpretations of their favorite documents, the Constitution and the Bible, as well as an assumption that no one will either read up on or bother to revisit history.
Earlier this week, Franklin Graham, son of evangelist Billy Graham, in an unfortunate choice of words, suggested that homosexuality is being "crammed down [the] throats" of Christians, noting that Tiffany's & Co is "advertising wedding rings for gay couples." Graham is calling for a boycott of the jeweler and Wells Fargo, both of which apparently use same-sex couples in their ads. Ironically, he posted his outrage on Facebook, whose CEO and founder, Mark Zuckerberg, marched alongside his employees in 2013 in San Francisco Pride.
It would appear that Scott Walker and Ted Cruz are treading the same homophobic path, both recently announcing the prospect of a constitutional amendment either defining marriage in the GOP's terms, as one man and one woman, or leaving it up to individual states to define marriage or allow it.
"The decision on defining marriage should be left up to the states," Walker said.
Cruz has gone so far as to introduce legislation to establish a constitutional amendment protecting states that want to bar same-sex marriage.

Matt Levett Wins 7th Annual Heath Ledger Scholarship



Actor and filmmaker Matt Levett  (pictured left) has won the 2015 Heath Ledger Scholarship, Australians in Film announced.  Emilie Cocquerel and Lily Sullivan were named this year's runners-up.
"It was inspiring to be on a judging panel where every person was passionate and invested in the result. The decision was not easy as each of the applicants are talented and unique and we are sure they will have long and lovely careers," said casting director Laray Mayfield, who was a judge on the panel that chose who best deserved the grant. "Ultimately, our decision was to award the scholarship to Matt Levett. We are all excited about watching his talent and career continue to grow and we are also looking forward to seeing the work the runners-up Emilie Cocquerel and Lily Sullivan will do."
Each year, Ledger's father Kim, patron of the scholarship, contacts the winner to advise them that they have won.
"It is always such an exciting phone call to make because we know that the scholarship makes such an impact on a young performer's career," Ledger said. "For the seventh year, the scholarship has gone to a deserving recipient in Matt Levett. This is a wonderful initiative run by Australians in Film and we wish Matt every success."

A Canberra couple is threatening to divorce if same-sex marriage is legalised in Australia, but Nick and Sarah Jensen, who have just celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary, will continue to live together and refer to each other as husband and wife.
'As Christians, we believe marriage is not a human invention,' Mr Jensen wrote in the Canberra City News on Thursday.  The couple view marriage as a fundamental order of creation and part of God's intimate story for human history.  'My wife and I, as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognise the government's regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnisation of same-sex couples,' Mr Jensen said.  'If parliament voted to change the timeless and organic definition of marriage, it would have moved against the fundamental and foundational building block of Australian society and, indeed, human culture everywhere.  'Indeed, it raises a red flag when a government decides it is not content only having sovereignty over land, taxes and the military, but words themselves.  'By changing the definition of marriage it would, in years to come, have an altogether different sense and purpose, Mr Jensen said.

 Calling it a “flippant, fit-of-pique publicity stunt,” an Australian woman brutally disinvited a Christian couple from her own non-gay wedding, after they claimed they would get divorced if gays were allowed to wed.
Writing at NewsAU.com,  Annie Hagar wrote that she and her fiance have known for Nick Jensen and his wife Sarah for over ten years, attending their wedding although with different partners at the time. While she had previously invited the Christian couple to her upcoming wedding, his “publicity stunt” announcement caused her to change her mind, particularly when Jensen texted her fiance afterward asking him if they were still invited.
After wavering a bit, Hagar and her partner decided to teach their high school friend a lesson, with Hagar writing, “My fiance and I have decided the best thing to do is to make sure Nick understands how little he and his twisted world view matters. Couples all over the world of mixed race, mixed religion and now, at least in some countries, the same sex, enjoy a married life their forebears could not have dreamt would one day happen — and Nick and Sarah’s sham divorce will have zero impact on their lives. None.”
As to the “sham divorce,” Hagar delivered a devastating beat-down on Nick Jensen’s “crappy googling” skills, pointing out that getting a divorce in Australia isn’t as easy as jumping “back over their broomstick.”

The archconservative presidential hopeful tells CNN he'd welcome Jenner's endorsement but hedges on general acceptance of transgender people.
Ultraconservative and generally anti-LGBT politician Rick Santorum is still hedging about whether he supports Caitlyn Jenner’s gender transition, but he would nonetheless be happy to have her endorsement in the presidential election.
When Jenner, the former Olympic athlete once known as Bruce Jenner, came out as a transgender woman, she also revealed she’s a Republican, and many have wondered if she’ll find acceptance in the party. Thursday night, CNN’s Erin Burnett asked Santorum, a former U.S. senator who’s seeking the Republican presidential nomination, if he welcomes Jenner to the GOP. This came after she played a clip of another contender for the nomination, Sen. Lindsey Graham, saying he’s happy to have Jenner in the party.
“If Caitlyn Jenner wanted to endorse me, would I accept the endorsement?” Santorum responded. “The answer is, if that’s the way she feels about my candidacy, sure.”
But when Burnett pressed Santorum on whether he accepts Jenner herself as well as her endorsement and vote, he fell back on boilerplate language. “My job as a human being is to treat everybody with dignity and respect,” he said.

Gay Marriage in Mexico




 
Mexico's Supreme Court has effectively legalized same-sex marriage. The highest court in the country has found state laws that restricted marriage only to heterosexual couples were discriminatory.
Out of the 31 states, Mexico City, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Quintana Roo are the only ones to recognize marriage equality. Under a previous ruling, other states must recognize marriages performed in these four.
'As the purpose of matrimony is not procreation, there is no justified reason that the matrimonial union be heterosexual, nor that it be stated as between only a man and only a woman,' the Supreme Court. 'Such a statement turns out to be discriminatory in its mere expression.'   But this does not mean every state ban against same-sex marriage has been struck down, it allows gay couples denied marriage in their state to seek injunctions against district judges. When they have enough injunctions, the court will formally order state legislatures to lift their bans.

 Jeb Bush has launched his campaign to be president today (15 June). The son of former President George H. W. Bush and brother of former President George W. Bush, he appears to be eschewing his dynastic name with a logo which reads only: 'Jeb!'
The former Florida governor will officially enter the race with a speech and rally this afternoon, at Miami Dade University in Florida. 'My core beliefs start with the premise that the most vulnerable in our society should be in the front of the line and not the back,' Bush says in a video which is to be aired before the announcement speech, reported by ABC news. 'What we need is new leadership that takes conservative principles and applies them so that people can rise up.'
Although he is a frontrunner for the Republican nomination, the 62-year-old will face tough competition from other candidates. A CNN/ORC opinion poll, released earlier this month, found him virtually tied with Floridian senator Marco Rubio. Behind them, 10% of respondents said they supported Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Also in the race are ultra-conservative Rick Santorum and libertarian Rand Paul.
Things could be made even more difficult for Bush, as a gay couple in Portland, Oregon are refusing to give up the domain name they bought back in 2008. CJ Phillips and Charlie Rainwater purchased JebBushForPresident.com when rumors began that the politician might run for president.

University of Wyoming & Out West



The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming, which houses several significant collections related to slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is currently developing “Out West in the Rockies,” a first-of-its-kind regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and culture archive of the American West.
The archive will welcome collections from eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Retiring AHC Director Mark Greene helped inaugurate and Associate Director Rick Ewig will oversee this effort. Gregory Hinton, creator of Out West, an acclaimed national LGBT western museum program series, introduced the concept to the AHC and serves as project consultant. Hinton announced Out West in the Rockies at the LGBQT Alliance luncheon during the recent American Alliance of Museums annual meeting and museum expo in Atlanta.
Through BayCityJohn, Gregory Hinton has reached out to the fourm, to get the word out, and ask for any help that members would be willing to give him.

Over 300,000 Rally in Rome Against Gay Marriage




Hundreds of thousands of people travelled from all over Italy and Europe yesterday to protest against the proposed legalization of gay marriage, and the teaching of ‘gender theories’ in schools.  Gathering in the San Giovanni Square in Rome, with estimates of participants running from 300,000 to a million people, the protest put the ‘anti-Austerity’ protests held in London on the same day to shame, for sheer volume of people and absence of criminal behavior.  Attendees held aloft banners reading “The family will save the world” and “Let’s defend our children”, as Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi tries to push a civil union bill through parliament.
“In my children’s schools they are talking about families made up of two fathers or two mothers, without asking parents’ permission,” said 41-year old doctor Giuseppe Ripa, adding: “It’s dangerous and wrong.”  Fellow protester Piero Uroda, a 78-year-old pharmacist, said it was “not honest to say these things to the very young, it’s not like they are students who can debate these ideas. I don’t want gay marriage or gay adoption, the natural family is like ours”.
The call for Italy to keep pace with its western European neighbors on the issue has grown stronger since Ireland voted overwhelmingly in favor of gay marriage last month.

The National Assembly of Austria has taken a strong stance against equal marriage yesterday (18 June).  Two days before Vienna Pride, the Assembly voted against a proposed resolution to grant lesbian and gay couples ‘the human right of equal marriage’.  Out of 136 representatives, only 26 voted for and 110 against the proposal in a roll-call vote; the Green party, who proposed the resolution, was the only party to fully support marriage equality.
On Tuesday, in light of the opening of Vienna’s Pride Village, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), coalition partner to the conservative Austrian People’s Party, demanded equality for all – now their representatives voted against marriage equality.
‘The SPÖ’s deepest conviction are equal marriage rights for homosexual people,’ said party whip Andreas Schieder during a discussion about the resolution.
‘We demand full equality. Right now, such a resolution – even supported by the SPÖ – wouldn’t get a majority.  ‘Which is why we will continue to work on convincing conservative forces that these are life realities and discrimination cannot have a place.’

Prince Harry Stopped Homophobes




 
In a recent article for the Huffington Post ex-soldier James Wharton remembers how the Prince defended him from an attack. In 2008, he was targeted by other soldiers for his sexuality.
‘ had got a little close to a soldier from another regiment whilst drinking in the bar. ‘Word had got round among the other regiment about what had happened between me and one of their own, and a group of angry sergeants wanted my blood - because to them, I was obviously to blame.' He told Prince Harry - his commander - who angrily said he would sort the issue, 'once and for all'. ‘Harry confronted the older non-commissioned officers, and made, quite clear, that they would be for the high jump if they gave me another second's hassle over the issue - my sexuality.’
Prince Harry retired from army life on Friday. Wharton says he was a firm but compassionate leader, and that: ‘He got us - and we got him.’

NOM, The Republicans, and "The Pledge"



The National Organization for Marriage wants Republicans running for the White House to know what needs to be done to gain its support.
The anti-gay marriage group issued a 5 point pledge this past week to the GOP presidential candidates. The document mirrors what NOM expected from the party in 2012. The first point is to support a constitutional amendment 'protect[ing] marriage as the union of one man and one woman.' The second is aimed at the Supreme Court. Any decisions the nine-justices passed supporting marriage equality need to be fought and overturned. This includes nominating judges 'who are committed to restraint and applying the original meaning of the Constitution.'
Any executive orders from President Barack Obama that 'have the effect of undermining marriage' must be overturned. This includes blocking 'the promotion of a redefined version of marriage in public schools and other government entities.' There is also a call for the support of the First Amendment Defense Act. This bill, supported by Senator Mike Lee, protects people, organizations, and business who define marriage as the union between a man and a woman. Lastly, NOM wants the Department of Justice to investigate harassment opposite-sex marriage supporters have endured.
As of today, 20 June, no candidate has singed the pledge. However, NOM President Brian Brown wants them to know there will be consequences if the group is ignored. 'We are [only] going to support he candidates that stand up and sign the pledge.' Brown said to CNN, according to Think Progress.

Linda Cardellini Cast In ‘The Founder'



Linda Cardellini's star continues to rise, and she has been cast to co-star in another movie.
She got her start with Freaks And Geeks, and went on to appear in films like Legally Blonde and Brokeback Mountain (as waitress Cassie).  The latest film on her resumé is The Founder, the biopic about the man behind the fast food chain, McDonald’s.
Cardellini will play Joan, the third wife of Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), the Illinois salesman who turned the McDonald brothers’ drive-through business into a national franchise. When she met Kroc, Joan was the attractive wife of a successful restaurant owner in Minneapolis who represented greener pastures.
Cardellini is onscreen in Avengers: Age Of Ultron and stars on Netflix’s Bloodline and is next up co-starring in Paramount’s Daddy’s Home opposite Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg which comes out Christmas Day. She also reprised her Mad Men role as Sylvia Rosen in the drama’s final season. She is repped by ICM Partners and Mosaic.

Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage in All 50 States



States cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions, the Supreme Court says in a ruling that for months has been the focus of speculation. The decision was 5-4.
Justice Anthony Kennedy, seen as a pivotal swing vote in the case, wrote the majority opinion. All four justices who voted against the ruling wrote their own dissenting opinions: Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
"They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law," Kennedy wrote of same-sex couples in the case. "The Constitution grants them that right."
Comparing the ruling to other landmark decisions, NPR's Nina Totenberg says, "This is probably right up there with Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade — if you like it or hate it — and today, Obergefell v. Hodges. This was a historic moment."
Speaking at the White House, President Obama praised the Supreme Court's ruling, saying it arrived "like a thunderbolt" after a series of back-and-forth battles over same-sex marriage.  Obama says the ruling "will strengthen all of our communities" by offering dignity and equal status to all same-sex couples and their families.  The president calls the ruling "a victory for America."

In the fall of 1987, a package arrived on the desk of Laurence H. Tribe, a Harvard law professor who had just lost a Supreme Court case on gay rights. It contained the legal opinions of Anthony M. Kennedy, a strait-laced, conservative Republican jurist from Sacramento who hardly seemed sympathetic to that cause.
The package was sent by one of the most influential men in the California capital then, Gordon Schaber, a law school dean who had enlisted a young Mr. Kennedy to teach night classes and nurtured his career. Now Mr. Schaber was angling for President Ronald Reagan to elevate his friend to the Supreme Court — and he wanted the Harvard professor’s support.
“Gordon Schaber said that Tony Kennedy was entirely comfortable with gay friends,” said Professor Tribe, who later testified to urge the Senate to confirm Justice Kennedy. “He said he never regarded them as inferior in any way or as people who should be ostracized, and I did think that was a good signal of where he was on these matters.”
Now, as the Supreme Court prepares to rule on whether to grant a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, Justice Kennedy, a onetime altar boy, has emerged as an unlikely gay rights icon. At 78, he has advanced legal equality for gays more than any other American jurist, making his friend Mr. Schaber, who died in 1997 — and who was, many who knew him believe, a closeted gay man — look prescient.

Ang Lee and James Schamus Reflect on 'Brokeback Mountain'



Variety's Marriage Equality issue profiles the role Hollywood has played in promoting gay rights, following the historic gay marriage ruling in the US. Director Ang Lee and producer James Schamus reflect on 'Brokeback Mountain', a decade after it was made.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain, which made history as the first gay romance to cross over into the mainstream, eventually grossing US$178 million worldwide. Nearly a decade later, it's still the most successful same-sex love story that Hollywood has ever produced.
The film's director Ang Lee and producer James Schamus spoke to 'Variety' in separate conversations about their memories of the movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as closeted cowboys.

Late actor Heath Ledger based his famous role as a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain on his “homophobic gay“ uncle, according to the film’s director Ang Lee.
As the Oscar-winning film reaches its tenth anniversary, Lee and the film’s producer, James Schamus, have reminisced about the casting and the making of the film.
Lee has told Variety.com that Ledger looked to his family for inspiration for his gay character Ennis Del Mar.
“Heath came in and wanted to do it right away. I think he told me that he learned from one of his uncles, who is also a very macho, homophobic gay, much like Ennis, and also a rancher,” Lee told Variety.
When Schamus met Ledger, he was a little awestruck and tried to act out a scene from the upcoming film.

Celebrating its sixth year in 2015, The Loft Film Fest (located in beautiful Tucson, Arizona) is dedicated to showcasing the best independent, foreign and classic films, as well as celebrating the work of established and emerging directors, writers, producers and actors. The Loft Film Fest, through its eclectic and diverse programming, aims not only to expand the audience for cinema that challenges, inspires and entertains, but also to honor those artists whose talent and passion bring that cinema to life.
Described by Filmmaker Magazine as being “geared truly toward cinephiles of nearly every stripe,” and praised for its “phantasmagorical programming … and astute choice of guests,” The Loft Film Fest was created in 2010 as a showcase for the very best independent, foreign and classic cinema. For five days in October, The Loft Film Fest provides an intimate and unique setting for film fans to experience hand-selected festival favorites from Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, etc., and to meet internationally-renowned artists from the world of independent cinema.
According to their Facebook page (and posted by BayCityJohn) this year's event (October 21-25) will feature both Diana Osanna and Lary McMurtry, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain.  A few Brokies have started to talk about going to the event.

Hillary Clinton Comforts Gay Youth on Social Media



A recent posting to the Humans of New York Facebook page has gone viral, showing Hillary Clinton's support for the gay community, and her campaign's embrace of social media.
The posting was of an unnamed boy, and underneath it was the message:  “I’m homosexual and I’m afraid about what my future will be and that people won’t like me.”
Presidential hopeful Clinton replied to the post:  “Prediction from a grown-up: Your future is going to be amazing.  You will surprise yourself with what you’re capable of and the incredible things you go on to do. Find the people who love and believe in you — there will be lots of them.”  The post was signed simply "H", which her staff has confirmed it was written by Clinton, instead of a staff member.
Clinton had made gay rights a centerpiece of her 2016 campaign.  Last month, on the eve of the Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right, she released a video, “Equal,” that featured a montage of gay couples, many of them on their wedding day.  “Being LGBT does not make you less human, and that is why gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights,” she said in the voiceover.

How Episcopalians Embraced Gay Marriage




Gene Robinson received death threats when he became the first openly gay Episcopalian bishop. Twelve years later, his church is performing gay weddings. That’s progress.
It’s hard to remember how difficult life in the Episcopal Church was for me a mere 12 years ago. In June of 2003, I had become the first openly gay priest to be elected a Bishop in historic Christianity. Not the first gay bishop, mind you, but the first one to openly say so.  Today, it is difficult to believe how panicked everyone was.
The death threats against my partner and me commenced immediately. Many within The Episcopal Church thought that our beloved Church had come loose from its biblical and theological moorings. (It hadn’t.) This controversy was going to kill us. (It didn’t.)  The Archbishop of Kenya said that when I was consecrated, the Devil entered the Church. (Hardly!)  This would cause division and strife in the Episcopal Church. (True. And sadly, some 100,000 members—out of roughly 2 million—left over this and other changes in the Church.) The Church, some said, had gone too far in its efforts to be inclusive. (In fact, we hadn’t gone far enough.)
Fast-forward only 12 years to today, when the just-concluded General Convention of the Episcopal Church opened the sacrament of marriage to gay and lesbian couples, just days after the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land. And the Church’s vote by bishops, clergy, and laity wasn’t even close. By a stunning majority, and with little rancor, the Church elected to open all the sacraments to all the baptized. We’d gone from panic over a gay bishop to affirming gay and lesbian relationships in marriage in only 12 years.

Marisa Tomei Joins Empire as a Lesbian Character




 
An Oscar winner has officially joined the second season of Fox's mega hit Empire.  Marisa Tomei is the newest A-lister to nab a recurring role on the upcoming installment of the Taraji P. Henson-led series.  The 50-year-old actress will play 'Mimi Whiteman, a demanding venture capitalist who becomes involved in Lyon family drama,' according to Deadline.
Marisa is certainly in good company joining the star-studded cast headlined by Terrence Howard, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers and Bryshere Gray.  The Empire newcomer has signed a multi-episode arc and her character will reportedly stir up some trouble between the Lyon dynasty.  'A Forbes list billionairess, Mimi is a lover of hip-hop music, social trends, high-end fashion and beautiful women,' the network described, seemingly giving away the sexual orientation of Marisa's on-screen alter ego.
Marisa won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in My Cousin Vinny in 1992. Her last TV role was the FX series Rescue Me.  She joins previously announced season 2 guest stars Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz and Magic Mike XXL star Adam Rodriguez.  Comedian Chris recently wrapped production on the show as creator Lee Daniels shared several photos from the set on his Instagram account showing Chris dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit.

The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming, which houses several significant collections related to slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is currently developing “Out West in the Rockies,” a first-of-its-kind regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and culture archive of the American West.
The archive will welcome collections from eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Retiring AHC Director Mark Greene helped inaugurate and Associate Director Rick Ewig will oversee this effort. Gregory Hinton, creator of Out West, an acclaimed national LGBT western museum program series, introduced the concept to the AHC and serves as project consultant. Hinton announced Out West in the Rockies at the LGBQT Alliance luncheon during the recent American Alliance of Museums annual meeting and museum expo in Atlanta.

Kim Ledger Interview


 
It's been seven years since Heath Ledger's sudden death shocked the world, but now his family is revealing the last words the 28-year-old ever said to them.  Kim Ledger, Heath's father, has revealed in a new interview that his daughter Kate was the last member of the family to speak to her brother before he died of an accidental drug overdose on Jan. 22, 2008.
Kim said to ABC News that Kate had spoken to the Australian actor on the phone just the night before he passed away, and even discussed his prescription drugs, which he was taking due to "an illness."   "Basically, Heath was complaining about not being able to sleep, because he was busy, he was meeting Steven Spielberg the next morning, he really needed to be bright and shiny and he was finding it difficult with a chest cold, or the chest infection to sleep," Kim said.  "So Kate was saying to him, 'well Heath, you can't take you know, sleeping tablets on top of prescription medication, you know it's not a good mixture.' And he sort of said, 'Katie, Katie, look...it'll be fine, you know, I just need to get some sleep.'
"Well they are really the last words we ever heard from Heath," said Kim. "Or at least, the last words that Kate heard. So, It was a terrible shock to us. I mean, he literally went to sleep."  Since his son's death, Kim has been an outspoken advocate for prescription drug abuse awareness, often challenging policy in Australia around the issue.

Counting For Thunder at Film Festivals!



We know it’s been forever since our last post, but we were working furiously to finally get Counting For Thunder completely finished - and it is! (Wow, did I actually just type those words??) We so appreciate all your love and support and are finally at the point where we can begin to share the film with the rest of the world. We’re beyond excited that The Rhode Island International Film Festival is hosting the World Premiere of Counting For Thunder August 4-9! With over 5,000 submissions from around the world, we consider ourselves so lucky to have made it into the running for Best Film! The festival attracts around 32,000 visitors a year so…yeehaw! The exact screening date hasn’t been set yet during that first week of August but should be sometime in the next few days.
We are also an official selection at The Columbia Gorge Film Festival in Vancouver, Washington where Counting For Thunder will screen on Thursday, August 13th, and Saturday, August 15th.
Then we will finish up the month at The North Carolina LGBT Festival in Durham where we will screen on Thursday and Friday the 20th and 21st. If you’re in the vicinity of any of these areas we would love to have you or any of your friends and family join us! There will be Q & A's with some of our cast and crew after selected screenings so please check back for more info as we get closer to each festival.
Again, we certainly wouldn’t have come this far without each and every one of you. We will of course keep you posted on any and all future screenings!

The Anti-Gay Sweet Cakes Wedding Cake Case




In January 2013, when Laurel Bowman and Rachel Cryer planned to marry, they selected a bakery they had done business with before: Sweet Cakes by Melissa. The couple had no idea what horrible anti-gay discrimination and acrimony the bakery owners, Aaron and Melissa Klein, had in store for them — simply because they are gay.
Four years earlier, the Bowman-Cryers moved from Texas to Oregon seeking an inclusive community and friendlier state. They settled into the Portland suburb of Gresham. A few years later, with marriage equality nearing, the couple hoped to adopt their foster kids, and to tie the knot!
Cryer wanted a grand wedding. Her mother came to town, and they visited a local bridal show where they noticed the Sweet Cakes by Melissa booth. They'd ordered from Melissa's Sweet Cakes once before — for Cryer's mother's wedding — and they enjoyed it. So, they scheduled a Sweet Cake tasting for the following day.
When Cryer and her mother arrived at Sweet Cakes by Melissa, Aaron Klein ushered them to his office, where he then asked for the names of the bride and groom. Told there would be two brides, he refused service right then and there. "I believe I have wasted your time," he claims to have said. "We do not do cakes for same-sex weddings."

Erin McLeod & Ella Masar Marry, and Shut Down Haters




 
Right after this year's Women's World Cup, Canadian star goalkeeper Erin McLeod married her longtime girlfriend (and teammate on the Houston Dash!), Ella Masar. Their love is not only lovely and perfect, it also followed quite the inspirational journey.
It wasn't long ago that McLeod wrote about her love for Christ, but also talked about the 'ungodly' way people live their lives, specifically homosexuals.
However, McLeod has since grown up, and come out, and recently married her partner, Ella Masar.  After the marriage, there were (of course) some negative comments posted, which got this reply:
For all the congratulations, love, and support thank you. Erin and I feel overwhelmed and blessed with everyone that has reached out... Also, to the "other" messages, thank you. Thank you for praying for me and reinforcing my own prayers because as you pray, "Lord please help Ella, allow her to see her sin for loving that woman, for respecting her, being faithful, honoring her, etc ..." Know I am saying the same thing, "my Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing me find my better half, for finding someone that strengthens my faith and allows me to be the person I always imagined. Thank you for teaching me what truly loving someone and others is all about, amen."

Kate Mara Promotes Fantastic Four


 
While her character boasts powers of invisibility, there would be no blending in for Kate Mara on Saturday.  The 32-year-old was dangerously close to stealing the spotlight when she arrived in a low-cut sage green dress that put her ample assets on show.
Kate drummed up interest for the film at Sirius XM's Entertainment Weekly Radio Channel at Comic-Con beside cast mates Miles Teller, 28, Jamie Bell, 29, Toby Kebbell, 33, and Michael B. Jordan, 28.
Kate was poised to impress with her flawlessly applied makeup and chic hairdo.  The House Of Cards star beamed with her cropped strands slicked dramatically over her head, while pops of light pink blush softened the look.   Kate was certain to stand out with her bright gold bracelet as she plugged the upcoming comic book film.
While chatting with the hosts, Kate revealed she knew little about the famous franchise prior to production.  However, the good company Kate was surrounded by proved to be advantageous when she approached her role.    'I wasn't very familiar with the Fantastic Four before we started,' the actress admitted during her chat.

Scott Walker on Gayness, and Choices




Scott Walker repeatedly refuses to give straight answers on gay issues. That might sound funny but it's really not.  Today, "State of the Union" ran an interview with Gov. Walker conducted by CNN's Dana Bash.  Let's just give you the transcript so there's no question about his comments:
BASH: Do you think that being gay is a choice? 
WALKER: Oh, I mean I think -- that's not even an issue for me to be involved in. The bottom line is, I'm going to stand up and work hard for every American regardless of who they are, no matter where they come from, no matter what their background. I'm going to fight for people and no matter whether they vote for me or not.
BASH: On behalf of people is to do that properly you have to understand or at least have an opinion on who they are and where they're coming from. 
WALKER: But again, I think -- no I don't have an opinion on every single issue out there. I mean to me that's -- I don't know. I don't know the answer to that question.  So I'm just saying, I don't know what the answer to that is. And again I'm going to spend my time focused on things that I do know and what I can work on

Rick Perry Won't Back Down





Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry expanded on his beliefs on gay Boy Scout leaders Sunday, saying on Meet the Press that he didn’t think openly gay Scout leaders belonged in the Boy Scouts.
Meet the Press’ Chuck Todd asked Perry, who served as the governor of Texas from 2000 – 2015, whether his views on openly gay scout leaders had changed since 2008, when he wrote that “openly active gays, particularly advocates, present a problem. Because gay activism is central to their lives, it would unavoidably be a topic of conversation within a Scout troop. This would distract from the mission of Scouting; character building, not sex education.”
Perry said he still stood by that statement.
“I believe that scouting would be better off if they didn’t have openly gay Scout masters,” he said.
Perry also said that he would oppose a new Boy Scouts policy of allowing openly gay Scout leaders — something the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) looks poised to adopt. Earlier this month, the BSA executive committee voted unanimously to end the ban on gay and bisexual adults. If the full national BSA board ratifies the vote on July 27, Boy Scout troops and units will be free to hire openly gay or bisexual leaders if they choose.

Republicans Comparing Slavery to Same-Sex Marriage





At the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, Republican presidential candidates made it clear to social conservatives and evangelicals that they’re not going to give up their fight against same-sex marriage.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court decision last month legalizing same-sex marriage across the country, the Republican Party has been split between those who recognize that the country should accept the decision and move on, and those who will keep pushing to abolish the high court, allow states to ban same-sex marriage, or to “resist and reject judicial tyranny.”
“It was sad to see more than a few Republicans, including more than a few 2016 candidates, publicly saying it’s the law of the land, it’s settled, surrender and move on,” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said during the event. “There is something profoundly wrong when republicans running for president are reading from Barack Obama’s talking points.”
The event featured 10 presidential hopefuls interviewed by Republican political consultant Frank Luntz. Between candidates, conservative leaders invoked religion and spoke about the need for the next president to support socially conservative ideologies.

Veterans Kicked Out Of The Military May Get Help





It is estimated that more than 100,000 Americans were discharged from the military because of their sexual orientation since World War II. Even though the ban on gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members was essentially lifted with the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” back in 2011, numerous veterans are still negatively impacted by their dishonorable discharge. For example, many are disqualified from accessing certain benefits that they are entitled to. Others may not be able to claim veteran status or could find it more difficult to acquire civilian employment. Some could even be prevented from voting.
That’s why, on July 15, U.S. Representatives Mark Pocan (D-WI) and Charles Rangel (D-NY) along with U.S. Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) reintroduced the Restore Honor to Service Members Act. The proposed legislation, first introduced into the House in 2013 and the Senate in 2014, would help service members discharged solely due to their sexual orientation correct their military records to reflect their honorable service and reinstate the benefits they earned. 
“As our nation continues to make great strides toward full equality, we must also do everything possible to rectify the effects of past discriminatory policies,” said Representative Pocan. “Our veterans risked their lives for our country, and it is crucial that those discharged from the armed forces due to their sexual orientation receive the recognition and benefits they deserve. The Restore Honor to Service Members Act streamlines this process, ensuring their service is respected and valued in the eyes of our country.”

Cassopolis Congregation Stands by Fired Gay Pastor




The Rev. Benjamin David Hutchison and his longtime partner, Monty, are expected to tie the knot on the steps of the Old Courthouse.   Pastor Hutchinson has been in the spotlight lately, because he was forced to resign from his post at the Cassopolis United Methodist Church because he is gay & getting married.

And, in defiance of United Methodist Church rules, some UMC pastors will say the officiating words and the marital pronouncement at the ceremony. The UMC’s Book of Discipline, its governing document, specifically states “ceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions shall not be conducted by our ministers and in our churches.”  In several parts of the Book of Discipline, it states that homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teachings.
By Michigan law, only two officiants can actually sign the marriage certificate.
The reverend coordinating the ceremony for Hutchison could not be reached for comment Thursday.
When contacted about Hutchison’s departure from the church after 2 1/2 years, UMC Western Michigan Conference’s director of communications said, “The United Methodist Church considers all personnel matters confidential, and so we are unable to make any specific comment regarding Rev. Hutchinson.”
Meanwhile, church members continue to support Hutchison and express disappointment he will no longer be their spiritual leader.  “We lost our pastor. We lost a valuable friend and member of our church family, and we’ll miss him.  He’s a dynamic preacher with a charismatic personality. He made a positive difference in the life of so many people by counseling them in their time of need and sorrow.”

Best known for Brokeback Mountain  and Prince of Persia, he recently lost over 2 stone to play Louis Bloom in Nightcrawler. But take a look at him now. The ripped torso he gained for filming boxing movie Southpaw has certainly caught our eye.
Jake talks regrets, family and, we assume, a lot of hours at the gym…
Mirror:  Your transformation for Southpaw is incredible! How did you do it?
Jake G:  A lot of training. Hard training. Training like a boxer, existing like a boxer, or at least how one can to play a boxer in a movie.
Mirror:  Was it a lot of weights?
Jake G:  It was mostly about skill. I trained for five months, went to a boxing camp and immersed myself. This film was a full-on commitment. I treat all my work the same, but some films require more commitment than others and this was full-on. Especially as I hadn’t ever boxed in my life.
Mirror:  Were you happy when the physical process was over, then?
Jake G:  I’m never satisfied to say goodbye to a character, because I never feel I nail them.   I always have regrets. With regards to the physical, yes, the dedication, the time I put into it and the sacrifice, I’ll be honest, I’m not planning on doing that again any time soon.

Counting For Thunder at Film Festivals!


 We know it’s been forever since our last post, but we were working furiously to finally get Counting For Thunder completely finished - and it is! (Wow, did I actually just type those words??) We so appreciate all your love and support and are finally at the point where we can begin to share the film with the rest of the world. We’re beyond excited that The Rhode Island International Film Festival is hosting the World Premiere of Counting For Thunder August 4-9! With over 5,000 submissions from around the world, we consider ourselves so lucky to have made it into the running for Best Film! The festival attracts around 32,000 visitors a year so…yeehaw! The exact screening date hasn’t been set yet during that first week of August but should be sometime in the next few days.
We are also an official selection at The Columbia Gorge Film Festival in Vancouver, Washington where Counting For Thunder will screen on Thursday, August 13th, and Saturday, August 15th.
Then we will finish up the month at The North Carolina LGBT Festival in Durham where we will screen on Thursday and Friday the 20th and 21st. If you’re in the vicinity of any of these areas we would love to have you or any of your friends and family join us! There will be Q & A's with some of our cast and crew after selected screenings so please check back for more info as we get closer to each festival.
Again, we certainly wouldn’t have come this far without each and every one of you. We will of course keep you posted on any and all future screenings!

University of Wyoming & Out West



The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming, which houses several significant collections related to slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is currently developing “Out West in the Rockies,” a first-of-its-kind regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and culture archive of the American West.
The archive will welcome collections from eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Retiring AHC Director Mark Greene helped inaugurate and Associate Director Rick Ewig will oversee this effort. Gregory Hinton, creator of Out West, an acclaimed national LGBT western museum program series, introduced the concept to the AHC and serves as project consultant. Hinton announced Out West in the Rockies at the LGBQT Alliance luncheon during the recent American Alliance of Museums annual meeting and museum expo in Atlanta.
Through BayCityJohn, Gregory Hinton has reached out to the fourm, to get the word out, and ask for any help that members would be willing to give him.

Obama Defends Gay Rights on Kenya Trip




 
There is perhaps no wider chasm between the United States and Africa than over the issue of gay rights. The tension was thrown into sharp relief during U.S. President Barack Obama’s trip to Kenya, the first visit of a serving U.S. President to this East African Nation. In a joint press conference with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday, following what appeared to have been a warm and productive meeting behind closed doors, Obama made it clear that the issue of gay rights in Kenya remained unresolved.
“I believe in the principle of treating people equally under the law, and that they are deserving of equal protection under the law and that the state should not discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation,”  Obama said. “I’m unequivocal on this.”
Kenyatta’s government has staunchly defended laws imposing up to 14 years in prison for homosexuality. Kenya and the United States, he said, shared many values, from a love for democracy, entrepreneurship and families.  Gay rights were not one of those values.

Review: An Extraordinary, Ordinary Girlhood in TLC’s I Am Jazz




 
It’s only coincidence that I Am Jazz  (premieres July 15) is coming to TLC shortly after 19 Kids and Counting  was forced off the same channel. But it feels like a change of era.
In May, TLC suspended the reality show about the fecund fundamentalist Duggar family–whose matriarch Michelle once warned that transgender people were child predators–after revelations that one of the Duggars’ sons had molested girls, including his sisters, when he was a teen. The network’s newest family-reality series introduces viewers—who didn’t already know her from her YouTube videos, writing, fundraising and activism—to Jazz Jennings, a soccer-loving South Florida 14-year-old who was assigned male at birth but has identified as female since she could speak. (Or, as she puts it in a children’s book she wrote: “I have a girl brain but a boy body. This is called transgender. I was born this way!”)
I Am Jazz  may be overshadowed by E!’s I Am Cait  (debuting July 26), about Caitlyn Jenner, which had the booster-rocket launch of a primetime Diane Sawyer interview, not to mention the media-bait combo of an Olympian decathlete transitioning amid reality’s royal family on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. (Jazz, at least, had dibs on the title locution; I Am Jazz  was also the title of an OWN special on her aired in 2011.) But I Am Jazz  may be most radical for how ordinary it is.

Cartoon Network's 'Steven Universe' Includes Lesbian Couple




 
A groundbreaking television show on Cartoon Network is now pushing the envelope even further by revealing that two characters on the kids program are a lesbian couple.   "Steven Universe,"  one of our favorite cartoons with heavy queer overtones follows the adventures of Steven, a young boy, who protects the universe with his magic gem powers alongside superheroes Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. In a recent episode, the show revealed that Garnet is actually a fusion of two other gem characters -- Ruby and Sapphire.
The scene to the left initially raised questions about the nature of Ruby and Sapphire's relationship. This week, co-executive producer Ian Jones-Quarterly confirmed via Twitter that the pair are, in fact, a lesbian couple.
"Steven Universe," is one of a number of kids shows that are increasingly focused on queer representation. As noted by Autostraddle, "study after study and expert after expert says that when kids see people like them positively portrayed in the media they consume, they are positively impacted, and when they don’t see that same representation, it negatively affects not only them, but how others view and treat people like them."
Most recently, Hulu premiered "The Bravest Knight That Ever Lived," a queer fairytale where the main character rescues both a princess and a prince and later gets to decide whose affectation he truly desires.

What are the biggest myths about bisexual people, in your opinion?
Woman A: That we are greedy. Or that we are doing it for male attention.
Woman B: Absolutely that bisexual people are just confused and they must check the box for straight or check the box for gay. No one needs to label themselves by something that doesn't fit.
Woman C: That we are extra promiscuous. Just because I like men and women doesn't mean that I have any desire to bang every person I see walking down the street. Another huge myth is that this is just a "phase" or that I'm just "curious." Nope. There's a word for girls (and guys) who are just curious: bi-curious. I definitely know that I have an attraction toward women and men equally; there is no question about it.

Inside the Making of Southpaw



The story of Southpaw and the story of the making of Southpaw open the same way: with two men at the top of their respective games. In the film, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Billy “The Great” Hope, the reigning junior-middleweight-boxing champion with a loving wife in Rachel McAdams’s character. The film’s success story goes back to the spring of 2012, when Southpaw producer Peter Riche had achieved what few in Hollywood can these days: a movie barreling toward a greenlight.
Riche first sparked the film’s original idea, one without “vampires, robots, zombies, or explosions,” as he put it, while at lunch with his producing partner—and father—Alan Riche. (Riche senior ran a company for director John Hughes and produced Empire Records and cult classic Deep Blue Sea.) The Riches quickly sold the pitch to DreamWorks, with rapper Eminem attached to play the lead and Kurt Sutter, creator of the cult-hit TV show Sons of Anarchy, writing the script. Next, the Riches “brought in [director] Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). And then . . .” In Southpaw’s raw trailer, “then” is the moment something terrible happens to McAdams’s character, and Gyllenhaal’s Hope loses custody of his daughter. For Riche, the one-two punch came when Eminem—about six weeks before he was to start training for his role—“dropped out of the movie to go make an album. That was rough. But in this business, you don’t give up.”

Brokeback Mountain: The 10th Anniversary of a Gay Classic




By any measure, Brokeback Mountain was a groundbreaking masterpiece. The 2005 film stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two cowboys whose secret and forbidden love affair burns through many years of their lives.
In addition to being one of the greatest love stories ever captured on film, Brokeback Mountain  introduced the world to the fact that gay cowboys and ranchers exist, even in that bastion of hypermasculinity that is the American West.
Based on the short story by Annie Proulx, the film was adapted for the screen and produced by Larry McMurtry and his longtime writing and producing partner, Diana Ossana. The two of them won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, a Golden Globe Award, and a Writers Guild of America Award (among many others) for Brokeback Mountain.

The quiet, revolutionary charge of Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, 10 years old this year, could be felt not only in the way it was embraced by cinemagoers, but in the way some attempted to neutralize its depiction of same-sex love by turning its most intimate and harrowing scene—Jack Twist’s “I wish I knew how to quit you” moment—into a joke. According to Jake Gyllenhaal, who played the charismatic Twist, that was something Heath Ledger, in particular, was acutely sensitive to. “He was extraordinarily serious about the political issues surrounding the movie when it came out,” he says. “A lot of times people would want to have fun and joke about it, and he was vehement about being serious, to the point where he didn’t really want to hear about anything that was being made fun of.”
Watched again a decade later, that “quit you” encounter on Brokeback Mountain—a culmination of the lovers’ lost years, symbolized in a desperate animal embrace—remains as charged and powerful as ever. Some of us have known someone like Ennis Del Mar, trapped in a world in which he doesn’t fit, and hopelessly incapable of seeing any alternative. Or, as Annie Proulx wrote in the short story on which the movie is based, “There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can’t fix it you’ve got to stand it.” It is Del Mar’s tragedy, and by extension Jack Twist’s, too, that he cannot bring himself to choose happiness over fear.
Many have written about the homoerotic subtext of cowboy films, but no story has been as forthright as Brokeback Mountain in reminding us that for all the celebrated machismo of the American West, there have always been men like Ennis and Jack.

It seems to be a very elaborate BBM canon fanfic, complete with maps and illustrations, that also includes the short story, the script and deleted scenes, in addition to the author's imagination.
I've only taken a brief look so far, it looks interesting. There are 162 chapters, although short.

Teen Stabbed At Jerusalem Pride Dies




 
One of the marchers stabbed at Jerusalem’s gay pride parade last week has died, police and health officials in Jerusalem said Sunday.
Shira Banki was one of six people stabbed Thursday by an attacker named by police as Yishai Shlissel, an Orthodox Jew who was released from prison just weeks ago after serving 10 years for stabbing marchers at a 2005 gay pride parade in Jerusalem.  She was 16 years old.
Shlissel was arrested immediately after the attack, according to Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his condolences to Banki’s family Sunday.  “Shira was murdered because she bravely supported the principle that each one can live their life in honor and security,”  Netanyahu said in a statement.“We will not allow this despicable killer to undermine the core values that Israeli society is based upon. We contemptuously denounce his actions of hate and violence. We will do everything in our power to bring this killer to face justice,”  the Prime Minister added.
Video aired on Israel’s Channel 10 shows what appears to be part of the attack 10 years ago: a man making quick slashing motions at people on a Jerusalem street, including one holding a rainbow flag, while others try to subdue him.
Channel 10 also aired video in the moments immediately after Thursday’s attack showing several wounded people, including a woman — her shirt bloody — who was put onto a stretcher and into an ambulance. Another woman was shown bleeding from her arm as someone applied pressure to the wound.

 NYC Homophobe Picks Married West Point Gay Grads To Attack




The first same-sex couple to marry at West Point were in a Manhattan bodega in the upscale neighborhood of SoHo on Sunday when one of them was physically attacked by a man they say threw the first punch.
"It's hard to believe that in 2015 we would have to deal with anti-gay hate crimes in soho of all places but that's what happened today,"  Larry Lennox-Choate III wrote on Facebook.  An unidentified man about 40-years old "screamed anti-gay obscenities" at the couple then punched Larry's husband, Daniel Lennox-Choate, in the face.
"The guy who screamed anti-gay obscenities at us in a bodega before sucker-punching Danny?,"  Larry, who graduated West Point in 2009, explains, "He left covered in his own blood with his tail between his legs after I handled the situation and tossed him in the street like the coward loser he is."
"The hate crimes division of the NYPD is on the case and we have full faith a positive outcome will follow,"  Larry adds. "We refuse to be victims and are thankful we can defend ourselves, but are saddened by the fact that idiots like this guy might not pick two guys who went through Plebe Boxing next time."
Daniel graduated West Point in 2007, and the couple were married in 2013.
"Aside from one fat lip and a sore punching arm, we are fine,"  the couple notes.

De Niro & Hathaway



The new trailer for The Intern is here. Nancy Meyers’ new comedy stars Anne Hathaway as the founder of an online fashion site and Robert De Niro as her 70-year-old intern. “You’ll get used to me,” Hathaway says in the film’s new trailer.
But despite their initially awkward meeting, Hathaway’s Jules Ostin runs an office fit for the modern age: an open floor plan, big windows, and an office masseuse (played by Rene Russo). She’s also quite fond of De Niro’s Ben Whittaker: “The truth is, something about you makes me feel calm. More centered or something. I could use that, obviously.” Aw.
Shot in New York last year, The Intern also stars Andrew Rannells, Adam DeVine and Nat Wolff. The comedy arrives in theaters on Sept. 25.

We are also an official selection at The Columbia Gorge Film Festival in Vancouver, Washington where Counting For Thunder will screen on Thursday, August 13th, and Saturday, August 15th.
Then we will finish up the month at The North Carolina LGBT Festival in Durham where we will screen on Thursday and Friday the 20th and 21st. If you’re in the vicinity of any of these areas we would love to have you or any of your friends and family join us! There will be Q & A's with some of our cast and crew after selected screenings so please check back for more info as we get closer to each festival.

Celebrating its sixth year in 2015, The Loft Film Fest (located in beautiful Tucson, Arizona) is dedicated to showcasing the best independent, foreign and classic films, as well as celebrating the work of established and emerging directors, writers, producers and actors. The Loft Film Fest, through its eclectic and diverse programming, aims not only to expand the audience for cinema that challenges, inspires and entertains, but also to honor those artists whose talent and passion bring that cinema to life.
Described by Filmmaker Magazine as being “geared truly toward cinephiles of nearly every stripe,” and praised for its “phantasmagorical programming … and astute choice of guests,” The Loft Film Fest was created in 2010 as a showcase for the very best independent, foreign and classic cinema. For five days in October, The Loft Film Fest provides an intimate and unique setting for film fans to experience hand-selected festival favorites from Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, etc., and to meet internationally-renowned artists from the world of independent cinema.
According to their Facebook page (and posted by BayCityJohn) this year's event (October 21-25) will feature both Diana Osanna and Lary McMurtry, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain.

University of Wyoming & Out West



The American Heritage Center (AHC) at the University of Wyoming, which houses several significant collections related to slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is currently developing “Out West in the Rockies,” a first-of-its-kind regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and culture archive of the American West.
The archive will welcome collections from eight Rocky Mountain states: Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Retiring AHC Director Mark Greene helped inaugurate and Associate Director Rick Ewig will oversee this effort. Gregory Hinton, creator of Out West, an acclaimed national LGBT western museum program series, introduced the concept to the AHC and serves as project consultant. Hinton announced Out West in the Rockies at the LGBQT Alliance luncheon during the recent American Alliance of Museums annual meeting and museum expo in Atlanta.
Through BayCityJohn, Gregory Hinton has reached out to the fourm, to get the word out, and ask for any help that members would be willing to give him.
