It also reinforces another fundamental principle, Carl: moderation in Christianity effectively means selecting less and less of the most pernicious principles of the bible.
The most moderate Christian winds up being an atheist.

Yeah, that's a refreshing message coming from a clergyman. It would be nice to hear more from many others like him in that "fire and brimstone" style delivery.
But what this really blatantly shows is that people create their own personal gods who will conform to and stand for everything they personally believe. The god of the bible says to stone homosexuals? Not my loving god!
These church goers may learn to not be hypocrites, but they sure are being intellectually dishonest with themselves. I wish they could realize that. Anyway, if a church is preaching and promoting tolerance to its sheep, I guess I can't complain.

I have to admit, as much as I dislike what Joliet Jake in the Blues Brothers referred to as Jive Assed Preachers, this guy makes a salient point I can't disagree with. At least his religion didn't completely strip him of his humanity.

I agree with your statement, Joan. Still, to see at least ONE of the Old Guard come out and do a fairly major mea culpa ... well, it's not something I expect to see every day!

Social change does not come from those who oppress or dominate or benefit from the oppression. Social change comes from those who refuse to submit to the definitions constructed by oppressors. It comes when the oppressed stand with pride and dignity and claim to be who they are, not who others "defined" them.

I'll pass on his concluding line, but except for that it was pretty amazing. Too bad the hypocrisy doesn't become visible to more religionists!

Did you ever wonder when the day would come that a bible-thumper would call his own congregation and organization on their hypocrisy regarding gays and Lesbians? Thought that would be a rare day in May, didn't you?
Well, it's late July ... and that day may have arrived! Check THIS out:

Pope Francis' approval ratings dropping. Pink News speculates it has to do with the pope's increasingly visible homophobia, having backed down from his "who am I to judge" stance.
It must suck to think that backing down from his early quick PR campaign leads to loss of credibility.

Louisiana's chief asshole governor, Bobby Jindahl, spent $371,548.63 of his state's taxpayer dollars to fight marriage equality, while cutting education and other benefits in his state. Jindahl is a pathetic piece of crocodahl dung. Not that I would use an ad hominem.

This video was embedded on Hemant Mehta's website.
Kind of a treat. I guess we could look at candles as emblematic of the fires of hell.

Thanks Joan and Cat. Yes, the Episcopalians also had the good sense to dump the Pope!

Congratulations to you and your husband, Bertold!
(And if you do go to confession, you can tell the priest they'll have to adapt to reality. :-) I know a gay man who "fired" the Catholic Church for considering him "intrinsically disordered"; he's still a theist, but happily Episcopalian -- as Robin Williams put it, "all of the pageantry, none of the guilt.")

Bertold, Congratulations! You are part of the new changes and a tribute to you both. My best wishes for a healthy, strong, happy 35 more years.

Thanks so much for all the good wishes guys! It's a bit of an anti-climax at this point. Deciding if I should wear shorts or jeans. I'll have to go to confession first, of course.

After 35 amazing years together we're tying the knot legally (even though we tied it for ourselves way back when). Went out and got the marriage license last week.

Yes, Loren, you are correct. It's a slow, baby steps process to enlightenment.
Perhaps we will be lucky to soon see a surge in atheism take place in the same rapid manner in which marriage equality advanced. We can only hope.
I have a feeling in my gut that religion is on the verge of receiving a serious backlash from sane-thinking people, both non-religious AND the moderately religious. Rational people are fed up with extremist ideologies both abroad and here in the US. Rational people don't take kindly to churches denying access to birth control via health care plans or wanting special rights to discriminate against whomever they choose. It's not only uncivil, but it's undemocratic.
With every "deeply held religious belief" and "religious freedom" legislation being trumpeted as the cause du jour, the fundamentally religious keep digging themselves into a bigger hole.
