 Winyan,

You are amazing.  I thought just me and the Mayan were sticking with that date.

I remember the JW's used to claim the world would end October 1975. So far they are off by 32 1/2 years. I have not talked religion with a JW since 1974. When they do come by the house they ask if anyone speaks Spanish and when I say no, they turn around and walk away which used to seem strange but I have noticed the Elders and Sisters who are tracting do the same thing. I am getting off topic - Does anyone know what the excuse the JW's have for the world not ending?

Right Month, wrong Year according to my calculations.  Stay tuned.

You have plenty of company there. I'm seeing it coming together already with the worldwide food shortages, etc. I believe the Mayan calendar more than any profits of doom.

p.s....Thanks for thinking I'm amazing.

I think it is ok for you to hijack the thread. It does not bother me. In fact I like it. I like the 2012 date for a number of reasons.

It was October 1975. I left on my mission in January 1975 and I was sort of friends with a TBJW girl before I left and she was very concerned because of what her church was teaching.

There were quite a few churches in the 1800s claiming dates for the end of the world. I believe the SDAs also had a few dates picked out for the end of the world as well.

I was listening to XM Radio and they had the Lone Ranger from 1953 on. There used to me this TV commercial for a used car dealer and he used to call himself The Loanaranger or something like that. I thought he was funny.

I checked my list again and I saw Pay-Lay-Ale was on it but the notion said "DAMM GOOD BEER" say it three times in a circle of friends and then empty the keg.

JS gave a date of when things were supposed to wind up the scene.

On February 14, 1835, Oliver B. Huntington recorded in his diary that Joseph Smith had said that "God had revealed to him that the coming of Christ would be within 56 years."47  The official History of the Church records the same false prophecy.48  From that point on, the "Saints" fell back upon the vain hope that if not before then, at least no later than February 14, 1891, all would be well in "Zion."  In 1886 the Millennial Star quoted Apostle Moses Thatcher's statement:  "...the time of our deliverance will be within five years; the time indicated [by Joseph Smith's "prophecy"] will be February 14, 1891."49  Mormon writer Klaus J. Hansen makes this staggering admission:
...in 1890 there was a widespread belief among Church members that Joseph Smith's prediction of 1835, that 56 years would "wind up the scene," would be fulfilled.  But such enthusiasm was short lived.  In 1903, Benjamin F. Johnson...could not conceal his disappointment when he remarked that "we were over 70 years ago taught by our leaders to believe that the coming of Christ and the millennial reign was much nearer than we believe it to be now."

What is it about people - they want to join cults, they want to have predictions for the end of the world - they want to believe only they will be saved at the end of the world - even the Mayans

If we weren't so gullible all these stupid cults wouldn't get all this power over us.

I just think it is wierd humans are obsessed with predicting their ultimate demise.

Why do you think this is?

It is a way to control the masses.  People who fear are people who can be controlled.  Why do we fall for it?  We hope.  We have a universal need to feel we belong.  We are gullible.  We are naive.  Any other ideas?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to believe in something good.  Everyone wants to have hope, it's natural.  I hope my girls grow up healthy and independent.

Who doesn't want to fit in somewhere?  We are all here aren't we?  Belonging to a group reinforces that you are making the right decisions.  It is good to get the advice of others and feel supported in decisions you make.

Where it crosses the line is when it interferes with people being happy and independent.  When it controls every aspect of your life, every decision that you will make.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to please God, but to try and please a community is utterly impossible!

The Mayan civililzation is hardly some "cult" and they don't believe they will be the only ones "saved." If we listened to their advice, it would probably be a lot easier to live through things that we will be faced with. Like 'watch where your food and water is coming from.' That's something we're dealing with now. It's not talking about the demise of the world. It's about how we survive the challenges.

Winyan, I don't understand your Mayan comment.  I agree they were a civilization, not a cult - however, your comment about listening to them ("watch where your food and water come from"), does that mean just observe their bad example in literally eating themselves out of house and home?

I agree cults get their power from our fear - especially our fear of death.  This still doesn't answer why we are so obsessed with predicting the end of "our" world.  People have been doing this for millenia.

There was a recent news story about the almost demise of humans 70,000 years ago - apparently the human race was down to about 2,000 individuals (mostly due to drought) 70,000 years ago and now is up again to 6 billion or so.  This evidence comes from the science of genetics which can tell us a tremendous amount about our history apparently.  When we say the end of the world we don't really mean that - we mean the end of "us" humans.  Maybe this is some subliminal primordial memory of that almost extinction?  Just a random thought.

I found this table http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehovah's_Witnesses    It kinda showes the diferent dates that have been prophesised for different things by JWs.  There was apparently many forcasted dates for the "Great Tribulation" or armaggedon, and now they are going with "we don't know, but it might be soon."  Each was taught for some period of time.  1975 was relatively small amount of time in respect to "within a generation of 1914."

Hi Winyan - I was referring to the recent theories about the fall of the Mayan civilization (from Jared Diamond's book "Collapse").  supposedly they all moved to the cities, and used up all the surrounding resources (food, water, soil fertility, trees) etc., then starvation, etc., caused the fall of the civilization including the priestcraft power keeping the kings in power.  When people are starving they tend to question those in authority and beliefs that keep those people in authority.

I just thought maybe that was what you were referring to by your comment.  Sorry I wasn't clear.  Maybe I still am not clear?
