Here's a wonderful interview with Bisi Alimi, a Nigerian activist. I stand in awe of such individuals who are fighting for our rights in the most intolerant places.

That's a great letter, Bertold. Many good rational points in it. But rationality isn't a strong characteristic of fundamental christians. At the end of the day, this gay pastor will be classified by the fundamentalists as just another deviant who is not a "True Christian." Case closed. No more need for additional arguments.

I wonder how Thomas views his buddy Scalia, now that Scalia has gone public with his view that black students may benefit from slower colleges instead of the better universities.

Daniel, I've read a suggestion that Justice Ginsburg, a.k.a. "Notorious RBG", might consider strategically retiring now, so that President Obama, rather than a possible Republican president, can nominate her successor. The question is whether the "Republican'ts" could block Senate action until after the election.
Also, Anthony Kennedy is 79 and Stephen Breyer is 77. I wish them, as well as Ginsburg, Kagan, and Sotomayor, long life and health, but we should still keep this in mind:
Vote Democratic - The future of the Supreme Court depends on it

Marco Rubio wants to pack the supreme court with religious conservatives to over turn marriage equality.

So far -
Trump - scapegoat Mexicans and Muslims.
Cruz - scapegoat Muslims and Gays
Rubio - scapegoat Gays
Fiorina - scapegoat Planned Parenthood.

I don't know who the others are scapegoating.

It's disappointing.  The Republican Party has so thoroughly sold  itself out to scapegoating, scare tactics, and billionairres, they don't have any ideas at all.  It's also scary.

Can we have Justice Ginsberg sleep in a cryo-perservative tank to keep her alive and active until at least after the election?  If the Republican thugs win, we'll need her alive for the next 4 to 8 years.

This is kind of a reasonable documentary.  I don't care for the title - what next, "How we got women" or "How we got black"?

I actually remember it being even worse than the documentary can describe.  And the journey far more difficult.  I''d like some reparations.  And wont get them, so you have to move on.

Anyway, better than some versions.

Yeah, that's a great video as well, Daniel.  Thanks for posting it.
I also enjoyed your childhood story about interracial marriages.  So many of kids' "But why?" questions are asked because what they see just doesn't make sense in their eyes.
Just think about all the current fuss parents are making about allowing trans-gendered school students to use the bathroom in which they feel the most comfortable.  Some parents are outraged, but I bet if you surveyed the students, most would likely not even care or want it to be an issue.  That's why being a good parent (or mentor) is so crucial to our future.  Kids learn their values from adults.
.

Comment by Daniel W on October 1, 2015 at 4:37pm
Carl, thank you for posting.  Intersex folks need to be included at the top of the list.  Somehow, people who are intersex are often left out of the discussion.  That is unwise, unfair, and wrong.

Ages ago, in my racist church, I got into trouble for asking "If no one can marry outside their race, then who do racially mixed people marry?"   The answer was never good - some people said interracial had to marry interracial people.  Some said they couldn't marry anyone.  Others said you had to marry the race that you looked the most like.   If you are 50% one thing and 50% another, then you have to marry someone with the same proportions of the same races.  My conclusion was that racists were just stupid.  They pretend race is an absolute barrier, but don't realize there is no barrier, only fuzzy overlay.  Which is good.  Fuzz is much more interesting and enjoyable than stone.

With intersex, it's sort of a similar thing, barriers not being what we are taught.  If you have to marry "the other gender", and intersex people are both or neither, or something else, then who do they marry?  If only each other, then does that mean there are more than 2 genders?  If so, then the entire christian basis of man+woman falls apart.

In the end, we are all only human.  We HAVE to stand up against medicalized genital mutilation by surgeons and paid for by health insurance.  It is not gender correction, and not gender assignment.  It is mutilation.

Here is a video I liked a lot.  Different topic.  I think this kid is adorable.

BB, I agree that Letter to KD is an interesting angle, sort of. I never get LGBT christisnity. To me its just another case of cherry picking the bible snd religion, mor morphing of the continuously self aggrandizing / narcissistic culture of christianity.

A culture war, of course, needs warriors or many talents and inclinations. Im glad religion has morphed enough that a Lesbian can be a minister, but to me she's still sleeping with the enemy so to speak.
The Kim Davis saga continues. I wish I bever heard of that bigot.

We still have plenty to do in the world, where in some countries we can't take life and liberty for granted!!
On a much lighter note, the Huffington Post published some art appropriate for wrapping up Bisexual Awareness Week. A bit from one of the cartoons:
“Wait, you’re a lesbian now?” “No. I told you I’m bi.”“Back to men? I knew you were straight.” “Nope. Still bi.”(...more...)

Like that headline, do you?  Well, apparently, Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz were at least able to stomach the concept.  One Pastor Kevin Swanson apparently made such a suggestion at the National Religious Liberties Conference during the weekend of 6 November, 2015, which all three above-mentioned government officials attended.  Said meeting also caught the attention of Mr. Deity himself, Brian Dalton, and he was none too pleased.  His comments are registered here:

Also worthy of note are Rachael Maddow's observations on the same event, which may be found here.
That three men who aspire to the US presidency would attend such an event and tolerate the idea of the US sponsoring the rounding up and slaughter of gays, Lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people isn't just disturbing; it's disgusting.
Jindal, Huckabee and Cruz should be shamed off the face of the earth.

"Jindahl" is the word for the stuff they pump out of your septic tank when it's sat without cleaning for 20 years.  "Cruz" is the word for the stuff they scrape off the sides.   "Huckabee" is the word for the stuff that spills on the ground while the septic crew is putting the hoses back in the truck.

Yes! We need to blacken their names, on par with Santorum.
Anyone up for writing entries for them at urbandictionary.com?
And we need to redefine Swanson, which used to stand for palatable and nondisgusting frozen dinners....
Permalink Reply by Daniel W on November 17, 2015 at 6:21pm

On the other hand - then they try to define "Hillary Clinton" as something, and it just goes back and forth.
On the other hand, they pretty much did try to define Barack Obama as the great Satan, Muslim, socialist, antichrist, Kenyan anticolonial gay-bath-house-frequenting husband of Michelle.

As Loren wrote in his letter to President Obama about the Paris attacks and the need to acknowledge radical Islam for what it is:
"It is past time that everyone [...] acknowledged that there is an element of Islam that isn’t just problematic; it is dangerous.  Christianity has behaved similarly in the past, as evinced by the Crusades and the Inquisition and corrosively indiscriminate proselytism, among countless other offenses.  It [mostly] got over it because people got tired of the lies and the abuse … and forced them to stop."
(Bolding is mine.)

Permalink Reply by Loren Miller on November 17, 2015 at 6:16pm

Here's something to consider: I just threw the following string into a Google search:
"Kevin Swanson" "Mike Huckabee" "Ted Cruz" "Bobby Jindal"
Just those four names, using quotes to specify ... and I got 12,500 hits.  The word is out about the conference and that Huckabee, Cruz and Jindal were there; even The Young Turks had a story about it.  So, WHY hasn't it made the general news media?  Is it beneath their notice, or are they afraid of blow-back from three presidential candidates, none of whom can get their poll numbers out of single digits?
Permalink Reply by Daniel W on November 17, 2015 at 6:19pm

Loren,
The general news media are often worthless.
Permalink Reply by Loren Miller on November 17, 2015 at 6:32pm

Sometimes they are and no argument.  Still, kick 'em in the nuts enough times and maybe they can be bothered to wake up.

Loren, it's fear of not being invited to cover their next 'huge' political events (insert sarcasm). Everyone running for potus is pandering to broadcasting corporations and the basest fears of those prone to fear. With the repubs that always involves gays, religion, immigrants to name just a few.
The constant bullshit they spout is a cover for the larger problems. Like forty five million dollars being spent, by the pentagon, on a natural gas station in a country that doesn't have a vehicle that runs on natural gas. And the people who are responsible are not to be found. How the fuck does this happen? It happens by distracting fools with nonexistent problems. Like voter fraud and the other things I've mentioned. I'm sick of the whole bunch. Except Bernie. He doesn't seem prone to the exaggerations and lies the rest routinely fall into.

Bertold,

Well, considering that this story hasn't made the big four or the major cable news outlets, I decided to drop a note off with CBS News:

I recently learned of an event in Iowa - the National Religious Liberties Conference - which was attended by Governors Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal and Senator Ted Cruz and hosted by one Pastor Kevin Swanson. Pastor Swanson seems to have a mad-on about the LGBT community ... in that he wants us DEAD. For all I can tell, not one of the attendees I mentioned have any qualms about such a statement, since none of the coverage I've looked into has them making any kind of rebuttal or denial of Swanson's position.
My disappointment is that this hasn't made the major news media, and, considering the inflammatory nature of such a stance and the responsibility of anyone seeking the presidency, I think the public should be made aware of it. Thus far, CBS News hasn't, and I would heartily suggest that be corrected soonest.
If you feel like joining me in providing feedback, please do.

Epigenetics and sexual orientation

Homosexuality may be caused by chemical modifications to DNA

During development, chromosomes are subject to chemical changes that don't affect the nucleotide sequence but can turn genes on or off; the best known example is methylation, in which a methyl group is attached to specific DNA regions. Such “epi-marks” can remain in place for a lifetime, but most are erased when eggs and sperm are produced, so that a fetus starts with a blank slate. Recent studies, however, have shown that some marks are passed on to the next generation.
In a 2012 paper, Rice and his colleagues suggested that such unerased epi-marks migh... when they are passed on from father to daughter or from mother to son. Specifically, they argued that inherited marks that influence a fetus's sensitivity to testosterone in the womb might “masculinize” the brains of girls and “feminize” those of boys, leading to same-sex attraction.
Such ideas inspired Tuck Ngun, a postdoc in Vilain's lab, to study the methylation patterns at 140,000 regions in the DNA of 37 pairs of male identical twins who were discordant—meaning that one was gay and the other straight—and 10 pairs who were both gay.
... the team identified five regions in the genome where the methylation pattern appears very closely linked to sexual orientation.
... the study must be replicated with more twins to be fully credible.

Gender Identity and Sustainability
Posted by Ruth Anthony-Gardner on October 26, 2015 at 2:47pm in LGBTQI atheists, nontheists, and friends
Back to LGBTQI atheists, nontheists, and friends Discussions
.

How could gender identity affect sustainability?
Greater understanding of how cognitive dissonance works started this insight, after I "got" this message.

The first step was realizing that a similar process happens when the Republican party leads its base to buy into a world view at odds with science and resistant to facts. Using manufactured fears, "righteous" outrage, and scapegoating, politicians and pundits nudge along their captive audience just like cult leaders do their followers. And what makes that base so vulnerable to manipulation by cognitive dissonance? Self esteem based on invidious comparison, a need to feel superior to foreigners, minorities, gays, etc.
But surely traditional masculinity makes men equally vulnerable.

“The Mask You Live In” by The Representation Project explains how the way we have constructed the idea of masculinity in the United States doesn’t give young boys a way to feel secure in their masculinity, so instead, they are forced to go out and prove it.
source
Masculinity based on hierarchy and competition, "The Man Box", and traditional femininity based on male approval both leave people insecure.
When we question traditional gender roles we go through lengthy consciousness raising and personal growth. We forge unique individual gender identities, and come to appreciate gender diversity. While this might not make every gay person stronger, I believe it gives most of us a unique strength to resist traditional cognitive dissonance-based political and religious manipulation.

We’ve become a major force of nature in this new Anthropocene epoch; politics and psychology have now become branches of ecology, and how we think, feel, and act has consequences of geological scope that will echo deep into the future.
Curt Stager of Paul Smith’s College source
In short, psychology - issues of self esteem and gender - affects politics, which affects climate change policy, which affects Earth's soil, water, and air for millennia.
In other words, achieving a sustainable civilization, necessary for human survival, will require us to give up self esteem based on invidious comparison in favor of an egalitarian "I'm OK, you're OK" acceptance of diversity in all forms. Gays can lead the way a constructive global society that faces facts and resists manipulation, a psychologically mature culture with the strength for global cooperation.
Ok, I grant that the first thing that comes to mind here isn't "psychologically mature culture". LOL But look just a bit deeper than our face.

Oklahoma Republican Wants to Forbid Suicidal LGBT Kids From Meeting...

Oklahoma legislators are trying to pass an expressively cruel bill that would bar depressed LGBT youngsters from seeking gay-affirming counseling at school,...
The state House bill, proposed by Republican Sally Kern, is part of a slew of anti-gay legislation she wants to pass, which would sanction discredited gay “conversion” therapy and prevent HIV-positive people from getting married.
The bill states that no public school “counselor, therapist, social worker, administrator, teacher or other individual” will be allowed to refer anyone under 18 to any person or organization if the referral “pertain[s] to human sexuality.”
Does being a heterosexual rape victim count as pertaining to human sexuality too? Isn't it negligent homicide to stop suicidal kids from getting help?

It's mind-boggling that in this "modern" era, individuals who are agents of such loathing and destruction are elected to public office.

I'm afraid "this "modern" era" is turning into another dark age.  This is just one example of it.  The Texas School Board is another example.  The present-day Republican Party is another example.

I hope she has no children, family member or friend who is gay with her vitriolic beliefs. Sad that this legislator has the power to make lives intolerable for gays and their families.

Actually, Joan, I hope she DOES ... and I hope they have no qualms at all about getting in her face and letting her know how completely out of touch she is with 21st century life.  This woman deserves to have her ass kicked, solidly and frequently, until she gets the message.

I'm with Joan, and hope she doesn't. Not for her sake. I care for her well-being as little or less than she cares for others. I would hate to think that a child would be subjected to a parent who is such a mean spirited, hate filled, vile excuse for a homo sapien. A child, any child, deserves better than this walking colostomy bag.

Susan, you're right.  This homophobe is infamous for her bigotry.

On another note, I saw somewhere recently that Oklahoma was leading the nation on pro-discrimination legislation.  The country is far from equal.  The politicians continue to use antigay vitriol to stir up stupid jerk voters who like that kind of shit.

As most of you know from my post my oldest grandson is openly gay and the light of my life! I've always had a soft spot for the underdog and have been pro gay rights well before I knew he was gay.
This cruel bitch should be driven out of political life. People always bring their stupid god into the mix to justify their narrow minded ways.

That's a great letter, Bertold. Many good rational points in it. But rationality isn't a strong characteristic of fundamental christians. At the end of the day, this gay pastor will be classified by the fundamentalists as just another deviant who is not a "True Christian." Case closed. No more need for additional arguments.

This asshat again?

People like her can go f themselves.
